Z22 dying -- salvage data?

the touch screen wouldn't respond to the stylus.  I tried a soft reset, but it didn't help.  pulled off the screen protector, cleaned the edges with a business card, nothing.  tired a hard reset, and now I can't get out of the screen calibration  ....I see the target, but it won't respond to the stylus.
I've had the device for over 2 years, i think it's dead...
but I haven't hot sync'd in 3 weeks...don't want to lose the data.  help?

Hello rubyslipperlove and welcome to the Palm forums.
If I recall correctly, on the Z22, you need the digitizer to trigger a HotSync.  I don't believe that you can perform a HotSync by using the d-pad.

When I hotsync, and the display pops up, I seem to have some double items....
My previous problem (fixed by dbfixit as suggested on this forum) was the hot sync was stalling on the second date book.
I see that when it's hotsyncing, it is checking off one at a time...
Should I delete the duplicates and how do I do that.  (they are not listed as duplicates on my hand held that I can see.
All this is hard work for me, so appreciate this forum and all your help.  sdm

  • Palm Z22 Desk Lost Data

I use Vista and Palm Z22. Recently I noticed that some information, strangely not all, that I inputted in Calendar, disappeared after a while. Please advise how to fix this problem as soon as you can.
    Thank you.

I'm having the almost exact same problem. My boss was having no updates from repeated HotSyncs. Unfortunately, he asked for my assistance (I'm the "tech guy" but I have NO expereince with Palm). I looked at his Palm Desktop app. and noticed that in the "user" selection it was set to "None." I used the pull down menu to select his user name. ALL of the recently entered information disappeared! I could go back to the "None" slection and it looks like all of the files got updated at the moment I changes the user. Is there any way to get this data back?
The version of Palm Desktop is 4.2.2 running on Mac OS 10.4.11. The device is a Z22.

  • My Macbook just died & my data is inside! God!

I have a presentation due tomorrow and now, my Macbook died. When I tried to start it up, there is a short whirring noise but it stayed dead. Took out the battery to do a PRAM reset - no dice. Tried holding down the power button for a while as suggested by some people - no dice. Plug in the power - you guess it - it stayed dead.
    Dead dead dead.
    Any suggestions please? Help!

I reset the PRAM and it did not help. Went to the Apple Centre in Sydney and after told me that they will do a diagnosis (A$75 upfront) and get back to me in 4 to 6 days! To transfer out the data, the cost will be A$110 (US$83) per hr and the estimate is $275.
Of course I did not agree to the data transfer bit and told them to just fix it since the Macbook is barely a month old. Now I am furiously re-writing my presentation. Thank you, Apple!

  • TC died - recover data from the HD

    Hello guys.
My Time Capsule died, it will not powered up.
I open it up to remove the HD, and try plug it to my HD rack, read it and to copy stuff from it to another HD.
While I can easily plug in any hard drvie into the rack and read it, it doesn't seem to work with the one I
removed from TC. It powers up and spins, it's just that my PC won't see it. I suppose different formating.
Any idea if there is a way to recover the data?
thanks for taking the time to read
    regards
    Seba

Thank you very much for the time and your replies.
I managed to sort it out, and recover my files.
Once again, thank you, much appreciated

  • How does one salvage data off of a water damaged iPhone 5s?

It was submerged for more than 5 seconds and I have lost all hope of it to work properly again.
All I would like to do is copy data off of the main memory such as music and photos onto my computer.
It can still turn on but it operates very oddly.
I plug in my charger into the phone and the critical battery sign comes up (little red strip in an empty battery).
A few seconds later it boots up, with the apple logo and a brighter screen.
7 seconds later it goes dark and that process loops.
I wake up the next morning and it is off.
I re-plug the charger and it not goes from the critical battery sign, to the boot-up apple screen, and then instead of going dark and looping, it goes to a dark screen but you can tell that it is on.
It is like a completely dark/off screen but lighter. Almost like you increased a brightness meter to a completely dark screen.
All things aside, it was dark but on and it stayed like that for a while before shutting off.
    Please help.

This question pops up quite frequently but I've never heard of anyone having any success getting the data off a dead/damaged phone. Some have suggested  there are 3 party forensic services that can retrieve the data for a fee but I've never read any feedback to say it actually worked. Even 5 seconds is quite a while for battery powered electronic device to be submerged in water. Usually something gets shorted out. Try what ManSinha has suggested. You have nothing to lose. Good luck.

It looks like you may have a bad installation of palm desktop and will need to re-install the program. Is all your data on the device as well as in palm desktop? Here is a procedure to backup the data from palm desktop.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each
category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name
it something like Palm Desktop Data. Copy and Paste the link
below in a browser and follow the instructions on that page for
    the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of
that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard
drive. Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data
that was changed to that folder and save again to the external
    media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm
Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop
or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.
    To uninstall palm desktop in XP, you will need to follow this procedure;
    1. Backup users folder located at one of these locations:
    C:\Palm\(palm desktop username folder)
    C:\program files\palmone\(palm desktop username folder)
    C:\program files\palm\(palm desktop username folder)
    2. Uninstall(remove) Palm desktop in control panel-add\remove programs.
    3. On the start menu, in the run box, type regedit.
    4. Before making any changes you need to backup the registry. Click on file-export and then save in a location you can remember, like My Documents.
    5. Now go to the following Keys and delete the Palm folders. Be very careful at this point.
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palm desktop autorun
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palm
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\(delete)Palmone
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\U.S.Robotics(delete Palm entries only)
    HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\(delete)Palmsource
    6. Close registry.
    7. Go to C:\ and  C:\Program files, see if the Palm folders are gone.
    8. Restart the PC
    9. Reinstall Palm Desktop.

  • Z22 has died. Can I replace with Zire 31?

Z22 died and attempts to recharge (via reset and both the computer & wall unit chargers) to no avail. Never happy with Z22. PDA is my primary interest and Zire 31 looks like a good replacement.  However, can't find any information via the forum searches.  Any comments or suggestions?
    Post relates to: Palm Z22

Don't let Palm's misleading model numbers fool you.  The Zire 31 is not better than the Z22 in my opinion.
Palm devices could either have volatile memory, meaning when the batteries dies you lose all installed programs and data, or they could have non-volatile memory.
Your Z22 has non-volatile memory and the 31 has volatile, so the Z22 is better in that feature.
Your Z22 might just have a bad internal battery.  There is another thread about that with a link to pictures to take apart the Z22.  You might want to check that out.
If you don't like that option and if you want a bigger screen and also non-volatile memory go for the Tungsten E2.  They are sometimes $50 to $60 used on ebay.

  • What kind of sata interface do i need to retrieve data from mac 2009

ATTENTION MAC GEEKS!!!  My warranty has run out on my macbook and I have a corrupted hard-drive. After mistaking the display adapter port on my macbook 2009 for a thunderbolt port (wishful thinking on my part) I finally realized this version of macbook does not have any type of firewire OR thunderbolt port, and neither does the mac I borrowed to use as a target drive through which to run data rescue software. I did come across some people saying they used ethernet to interface the two macs, so after trying forever to set that up with no luck I found references to a "migration" applet that I would need to download to both computers. Since one has a damaged hard drive and will only boot from the install disk (but cannot be repaired with it), I can't exactly download the "migration" applet and the support documentation for my data rescue software states that an ethernet connection will not work at all anyway! Unfortunately my time machine died about six months ago, and all I really, really, really REALLY want is access to my documents folder on the macbook with the corrupted/damaged hard drive. The software documentation does say that a SATA connection will work and allow my second mac to scan the broken mac h/d. I've come across some usb - sata connections, but have also come across articles saying that using any form of usb connection to run a scan on a h/d won't work as usb (older usb, probably 2.0) is too slow. Darn, darn darn. I hadn't wanted to open the macbook if I didn't have to, but as I have to I will. However I don't feel comfortable making a sata to sata connection between the two drives as the second machine does not belong to me. How should I approach this? I am just sooo.....grrr about the missing ports on these Macbooks. I really hadn't notices as I never had to do this before! Any suggestions/help would be appreciated !!! would it work using this usb/sata connection? And so I don't get even more surprises, do all sata work on all h/d's? I used to network and maintain pc's, even setting up secondary h/d's but those were desktops and it was a few years ago, AND everything Apple just seems so...proprietary to me. PLEASE HELP!!!

You can replace the internal disk with a new one and then reinstall the operating system.  As you do that, save the corrupted drive and place it in an external enclosure which you then plug into your working MacBook.  You can then try to salvage data off of the corrupted disk (if possible).
For a new internal disk you might as well purchase a 1 TB fast hybrid SSD-disk since it only costs $105 and will speed up your system considerably.  The following reference will include the external enclosure you will need into which you can put the corrupted disk.  http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Toshiba/YTOS1TBHYS/ .  You can find instructions for the repair at http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Mac_Laptop.
If the corrupt will spin any you cannot retrieve the files using the Finder then try using DiskWarrior, uFlysoft, or McAfee Data Recovery for Mac.
              http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
              http://www.uflysoft.com/
              http://mcaf.ee/x0pfi
Once it is in the external enclosure, if it won’t spin give it a gentle tap on a table and see if it will.  I have revived several disk drives that way.

  • MacBook HDD dead; looking for a replacement if data recovery isn't possible

The HDD in one of my MacBooks has died - ticking at startup, and the file folder with the exclamation point ( ! ) on it upon boot. This just happened randomly one day, as I was watching a movie and the movie froze. I shut the computer down for the night, and the next morning this was what I was presented with upon startup.
I've tried a number of things - rebooting, cold restarting, resetting the PRAM, and booting from the OSX CD to use disc utility, nothing works. In disc utility the HDD isn't even recognized (it doesn't show up all all, only my SuperDrive). I've even removed the HDD and set it up as an external one to my second MacBook with no luck (it, again, doesn't mount, and so isn't detected in disc utility).
Now the issue that I have is, will it be possible to salvage this drive (if for nothing else than just the files on it)? The files aren't dreadfully important, and I don't want to spend a whole lot of money to recover them. I've tried using the demos of File Salvage, Data Rescue II, and Drive Genius 2 but none of them have been able to help me. Is there another way to mount the drive, so that I can access and/or recover my files?
If there isn't, I'm going to purchase a new HDD (this is under warranty, so it'll be replaced, but I want a backup/upgrade as well). What is the maximum capacity HDD that a MacBook will be able to use? I know that it's a SATA HDD, and I can easily get HDDs that are 500GB, but will those be compatible with my computer?
    Thanks in advance.

It does sound as though your drive has expired...try placing the bad drive in your freezer for a while and then place it in the external case you mentioned and see if you can get it to mount....I have seen reports here that it can help the drive to mount although I have not tried it myself...
As to the size of the drive..it needs to physically fit in the MacBook...9.5 mm in height and 2.5' SATA...storage capacity is not the issue...500 GB's is fine

  • Address transfer - Z22 to Zire 71

My Z22 died a couple weeks back and I'm trying to move the information from my laptop to my recently acquired Zire 71.  Following the directions from the Palm website, I've got the Zire working and am now trying to get the data from the Z22.  In trying to make the transfer, I drop the address file onto the Quick Install Icon, press the Synch on the desktop, and get the following error message:  "ERROR: The following file(s) could not be installed to the SecureDigital (SD) Card because there is no application on your handheld to open these files.
If you have recently installed such an application, please run that application and then perform a HotSync operation.
     Address.mdb"
Any ideas?  I sure don't want to have to try to recover this one address at a time, and I'm not sure how I'd do it if I had to.
    Post relates to: Zire 71

First of all, you cannot put a .mdb file in quick install and sync it to the device, it does not recognize the file format, as you have seen.
You have several options in transferring the data from one device to another.
Do you have the data in Palm desktop on the PC? If you do, you can export the data, create a username for the Z71 in Palm desktop, import the data to the new username and then sync the Z71. If the Z71 has been sync'ed to Palm desktop in the Past, you will need to hard reset the device and start with a new sync of the current data.
If you only have the .mdb files you can only copy and paste those files into your username folder, in the appropriate data folders. For example; in the address folder, paste the address.mdb in that folder. Open palm desktop and see if the data is there. If you see another address.mdb file, rename that file to address.mdb.old. You can only have 1 .mdb file in the address folder.
The .mdb files indicate you were using Palm desktopp 6.2, is this the version you are using? If so the username folder will be located in my documents-palmOSdesktop-username. Look in this location and see if you have the folders I am referring to.

  • How to recover data from an external hard drive that has lost half of the data I was storing in it

I am using a Lacie external hard drive to store my photos on. Every once in awhile it disappears from my screen. I have been able to bring it back by unplugging and re-plugging from the computer. • HI, Idid a up grade of my osx mauntain lion and it cancelled all my document, bookmarks and mailboxes it is normal? I have lost a lot of data bacons of it because i did not do the back up of all my files just the back up of my photos. . .what can i do

    HI,
Since a while I have received from apple the warning for an up grade for my Os x Mountain Lion and finally I decider to do it. . . . and since it was just an up grade I DIDN'T DO A BACK UP of all the content of my book pro because I thought it wasn't necessary . . . .but when I did it . . . . .it cancelled me all my files in documents, most of all my mail boxes in mail and most of my bookmarks in safari.
I do not understand why; since i did not change my os but just did an up grade of my existing one. . . . . .result I lost a lot of data and I do not know what to do.
Is this normal that it cancelled data in my documents folders and in others parts of my mac pro ?? ? ? . . . .ad if it is so why don't you write a warning saying that before going through  with a simple up grade  of your OS of your computer everybody should do a back up of everything it has in it ?!?!?!
    Buongiorno,
. . .ma dope averlo fat to l'up grade ho realizzato che il procedimento mi aveva cancellato tutti i file contenuti nei midi document, le mailbox che avevo create in mail e i bookmarks che avevo create in safari . . . . .

What happened isn't normal, but does demonstrate why you need a backup, preferably two.

  • Recover data from wiped hard drive?

    Hi everyone.
I’ve searched through the discussions unable to make any concrete conclusions to resolve my dilemma so I hope someone here can help me out if possible.
My Macbook Pro 13 inch (late-2011) running Mavericks had its hard drive recently wiped by an Apple technician after I took it in following problems.
I stupidly didn’t back up any files onto an external hard drive or in TimeMachine when my hard drive was working before. However, from reading these discussions it appears other people with wiped hard drives have been able to recover data with some success. I’d like to know if this is at all possible in my situation?
To put my dilemma into some context, only days ago my Macbook began to freeze up. Eventually I had to force shut down with the power button as the computer became unresponsive.
Afterwards, when I turned on the computer the OS would not load past the grey screen with the apple logo. I attempted to perform a boot in Safe Mode but encountered the same problem. Then the computer would only shut down at this point each time I tried to turn the computer on again. Naturally I took it to my local Apple store and had a ‘Genius’ check it out.
After attempting to load the OS, I stupidly agreed with the Apple technician that the hard drive should be wiped (being less educated then about hard drives than I am now). I’ve been kicking myself ever since then thinking at the time a broken/corrupted hard drive meant that the data was already lost and that it was safe to wipe the hard drive in order to perform an ‘Internet Recovery’.
The Internet Recovery for Mavericks however failed and the Apple technician offered to replace the Hard Drive for a small ransom.
I’ve since tried to turn the Mac on at home and the grey screen still appears this time with a flashing folder with a question mark.
I know I have to go and buy a new hard drive and replace the existing one. But I still would like to know, is the data on the old hard drive able to be recovered or are my files lost forever since the Apple technician ‘wiped’ my hard drive?
I’m willing to download the software and get the hard drive in order to retrieve any data if it is at all possible.
    Thank you for any help.
    Hayden
