• "Sleep of death" question and some observations

I just recently upgraded to an S3 from a Fascinate, and I've been impressed so far.  The only thing I really didn't like about my Fascinate was that it would suddenly freeze or crash one every week or two, and the only thing I could do was open the case, remove the battery, and then put the battery back in.  Then I could reboot the phone and all was well.  Well, after not using my S3 for an hour or so, I tried to wake it up and nothing happened.  I couldn't turn it off (or on) either.  Sleep of death.  I had to open the case, remove and re-insert the battery to use the phone again.  Is this a common problem?  What could be causing it?  Is there any other way to fix it?
Overall, I really like the S3.  It's a significant upgrade from the Fascinate.  Screen quality and size (larger but not too big), processor speed, and 4G LTE are great.  I have a seven year old iPod that is still hanging in there, but I hope to use my S3 in my car (2012 Prius II, no Nav or Entunes) to listen to my music if and when my iPod dies.  I can't get music to play on my car stereo when I plug my S3 into my car's USB port (I'm told its because the S3 doesn't support mass storage mode).  But, after uploading some iTunes music to Google Play, I can play it with my S3 over Bluetooth audio.  The sound quality is good, but not quite as good as a USB connection is.  I'm experimenting with various audio settings in Google Play Music to see if I can enhance the sound quality.  If anyone knows how to play audio with an S3 over a USB connection, I'd be interested in finding out.
I haven't used the camera very much yet (I have had the S3 only two days) but the few photos I have taken look good.  Battery life seems to be improved over the Fascinate.  Call quality also seems up a notch.  I haven't yet tried some other features, and still others i have yet to discover!  This phone comes with very good reviews, and I can see why.
I can also say that I was very pleased with the service I was given at the VZW store in Augusta, Maine, when I went to upgrade my phone.  So far, other than the sleep of death issue, I'm a happy camper.

Stop using the stock browser and use Chrome instead.  See if the "sleep of death" goes away.

• HP Slate 21 Pro "Sleep to Death".

HP Slate 21 Pro "Sleep to Death".
When the slate fells in sleep, it is never able to wake up by press the power button, or the screen may response, but immediately turn off the screen. Only way to revive the slate by pull off the power and power back again.
There was another thread reported the similar issue, but 7 months no update/response from HP employee
This question was solved.

• Mac Mini 2011 Sleep of Death

I have a Mac Mini 2011 with Lion factory installed configured with an original Apple Keyboard and a LG - HDMI monitor.
If the Mini goes to sleep either manually using the Apple Menu or based on Settings , it does not wake up !
Any  subsequent attempt to wake the mac by moving the mouse results in either nothing happening  / a system power down.
Restarting the Mac  is then  impossible. The Mini just makes JET engine level fan noise and does not boot.
Only after PMU/SMC resets and starting in Safe Mode ( Command +S when powering ) does the Mini come alive again.  What a nightmare !
My only  solution till now is to put the Sleep settings to "NEVER"
Surely there is a way around this .... sleep of death ???

I have tried to eliminate all issues related to connected periphals first as Apple is really not going to find a solution if it relates to these. I changed the HDMI cable to abrand new expensive cable as a first step. Then I connected only one USB Time Machine Hard Disk 1TB. The PC is now waking out of manually induced sleep. I am not brave enough to remove the "Never Sleep " automatically settings as yet.  Also downloaded a free utility named ONYX to do a system clean. They have a version for both Lion and Snow Leopard - just Google ONYX to see what it does. For now, at least the Mac Mini is working . Hope it lasts.

• Sleep of death problem Tablet S r5

My Tablet S suffers sleep of death problem after upgrading to ICS r5.
I did factory reset several days ago and it seemed the problem has gone.
But from yesterday it has begun again and happened twice today.
Overall I am satisfied with the upgrade, better wifi and less flickering.
Hope that problem won't get worse.
Solved!

Hello,
Thank you for your post
We are currently investigating why the power button intermittently will not wake the S1 Tablet from sleep.
Do you see a Green Blinking Indicator each time this occurs?
for the time being, performing a [ Soft Reset[/url:2fneqb0t] ] will allow a power on.
Once we have resolved this issue, we will post here that an update is available. There is no ETA at this time for resolution.
We are also aware of Tablet Icons not remaining on the desktop after power down
that issue is being addressed in this thread: Here[/url:2fneqb0t]

• My iMac is not sleeping properly(any help is welcome Thank you)

Ok heres the thing I had my mac on computer sleep for an hour and my display sleep for 30 minutes originally. I noticed that when I was asleep it turn on in hte middle of the night. So i started messing with the timers and putting it on 10 minutes and it would not sleep and if it did it would wake up like 10 minutes all of a sudde. I put my browser on a site does not have videos or anything that will wake it up. I've tried an SMC reset and everything. I've tried pmset -g to see whats keeping it awake and nothing. Right now i have my computer sleep and display sleep on 5 minutes but thats really too short. I dont have any applications running I think. My computer went to sleep on the 5 minutes but when i increase the setting it wont sleep. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. Im not meesing with it anymore till I get any suggestions. My Mac OS X 10.6.8
Please help, the waking up is annoying.

I'm on my Mavericks partition right now. System Preferences/Energy Saver - is Wake for Network Access checked?

• SUDDENLY SLEEPING Sudden death.

SUDDENLY SLEEPING. Like, I'd be typing along, with the powercord plugged in and a full battery charge, and the display goes blank and the whole machine sounds like it's going into hibernation. somtimes I have to take the main battery out and press the power key so there is no light coming from the pumping heart light in front of the PB. After that I plug the powercord back in and VOILA it starts up, with a warning that the clock is set to a date before 19 somthing and some apps will behave erraticly. the clock actually set it self to 1970. I have done all the resettings of Prams etc etc, I have even changed the logicboard, but still, ZZZzzzZZ sudden sleep/death. should I change the battery within the machin, could the two batterys within be FLAT/DEAD, is this the problem ?? HELP, sudden sleep.

• Mac Book Pro constantly displays spinning wheel of death HELP!!!

My Mac Book Pro (after installing Mavericks) displays the spinning wheel of death multiple times per day. I thought it was my Google Chrome, but now it has been happening no matter what application I am using. I used Etrecheck to see what is going on with my computer, but I don't actually know what the output means. I've copied the information below.
More information: I no longer have a Blackberry, but I don't know how to remove any software that may still be on my computer (since I see Blackberry listed under Kernel Extensions). I also backed up my harddrive on the 28th, just to be safe.
I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this. I'm in the process of trying to study for mulitple teacher certification exams, so this is the worst possible time for tmy computer to suddenly go haywire. Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to help!

yes, it could be due to nearly anything listed in your kernel extensions, startup items, launch daemons, launch agents, or user items above. Please check all of your installed third-party software to make sure that the versions which are installed on your MacBook Pro are compatible with Mavericks; uninstall every software package which isn’t Mavericks-compatible. After you’ve done that, boot into Safe mode, and see if you still get the beach ball of doom there. If it doesn’t appear there, restart normally and see if it appears then.

• My ipad doesn't seem to make a sound when it is closed or in sleep mode to let me know there is an imessage until you see it on the screen that someone has imessaged.  When you're taking it makes the swoosh sound, just not when it's in sleep mode.  Help

Am having some problems with the sounds on my ipad, specifically my imessage notification sound when your ipad is in sleep mode and someone is messaging you.  It seems to work with the swoosh sounds when you are actively messaging back and forth, but as soon as I close my ipad up and is locked or in sleep mode, I don't know anyone is messaging me until I look at my ipad.  I've tried a few things.. But nothing has worked so far....Please help!

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Check your settings. The iPads have a small switch on the right edge. It can be used as a rotation lock to keep the screen from automatically reorienting itself as you move around, but you need to have the tablet’s settings configured properly. That same switch, right above the volume buttons, can also be set to function instead as a mute button to silence certain types of audio.
If the switch is set to work as a mute button, you can change its purpose to “screen-rotation lock” by tapping the Settings icon on the home screen. On the Settings screen, tap General on the left side, and on the right side of the screen flick down to “Use Side Switch to.” Tap to select Lock Rotation or Mute to set the button’s function. Even if you set the side switch for your preferred use, you can still mute the Mini or lock the screen. Just double-click the Home button, and when the panel of apps appears along the bottom edge of the screen, flick the row from left to right with your finger. Tap the icon on the far left side of the row to either lock the iPad’s screen or mute the iPad’s alerts, notifications and sound effects. Music, podcasts and video are not muted unless you turn the volume all the way down.

To solve some sound problems, just follow these simple steps
1. Go to Settings
2. Tap on General
3. Tap on Reset
4. Tap on Reset All Settings
What this effectively does is to reset some of your Settings to factory default. It’s not a complete removal of settings. It removes all of your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do No Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy. It doesn’t affect your data. All of your email accounts will remain intact, as well as any SMS text or iMessages.

• Mac OSX 10.5.2 puts my system to sleep unrecoverably PLEASE HELP!

My system goes to sleep even when my setting tell it not to and it won't recover. The sound still plays, mouse and keyboard, and power buttons don't wake the system.
I have a dell 30" monitor and the ATI radeon x1900xt video card. 2x3ghz dual-core xeon processor G5 w 4 gb ram.
A similar problem arises when I play movies full screen mode through itunes or quicktime player or when I play ghost recon (full screen mode). The monitor goes black and the sound will usually loop where it was and after a minute or so, go silent. The system will not recover. All of this just started to happen after I installed and updated to the latest of OSX 10.5.2
Please Help!
P.S. How do I see the console for and list the events leading up to the crash?

It doesn't sound promising, but if you haven't already done so, check the contents of this folder:

• UNABLE TO WAKE A SLEEPING MAC MINI - HELP APPRECIATED

Dear All,
We've just got a new (2010) MacMini which is being used as a central media server, and being administered remotely via ARD 3.3.2.
The only problem we seem to be having is that once the Mac Mini has put itself to sleep we're unable to wake the unit up again vis ARD especially after it's been sleeping for a long while i.e. overnight (we have the put hard disks to sleep option turned 'off' incidentally).
The only way to wake the unit up is to physically go and touch the power button on the rear of the Mac Mini, which is far from ideal... so any help or work-arounds would be greatly received.
Thanks in advance

If the Mini is on the same network as your ARD management console, then choose Wake... from the Manage menu in ARD.
If the Mini is on a remote network, I'm looking for a solution to the same problem!
I have two Minis to manage on two separate remote networks. One is run headless (i.e., no keyboard, monitor, or mouse). With that Mini, it's set to never sleep (anything). Unless it has crashed, I never have a problem accessing it. I always log out of that Mini, which makes the Current Status "Available" and the Current Application "Login Window" in ARD.
For the other Mini, there's a keyboard, monitor,, mouse, and (frequently) a user attached! When nobody's at that Mini, I sometimes get "Unavailable" or "Offline" in Current Status in ARD (doing this for memory). If I have to get into that Mini, I have to have someone manually wake it just like you. I'd like a work-around or a set of settings to make sure that the manual wake is not necessary.

• Blank display after sleep. Please help

My MBP wakes itself every day at 6:00. For the past few days, when I've gotten to it around 6:30, the display has just been...blank. The keyboard illuminates and my cursor shows up, but the login window is nowhere to be seen. I've waited for it, and end up having to hold down the power button and start her up again, something I was used to with windows. Is anybody else having this problem? It has also occured any time after it's slept for a while. Does anyone know how to fix it?

Hello,
It seems that a lot of people are experiencing this problem, judging by how many boards there are for it...
I too am having the same problem. My MBP is a few weeks old, and I've only started noticing this problem in the last week or two. Sometimes my MBP wakes up fine, sometimes it takes it a few minutes, and sometimes I'm forced to restart it by holding down the power button. It seems to be worse when I've had my computer in sleep mode for long periods of time.
I don't use any external monitors, and I don't keep USB devices or anything else connected to the computer when I close it. It makes no difference whether it's charging or not. I have a few 3rd-party apps installed, but the problem started before I installed any. I've tried closing all programs before putting my computer to sleep. I've stopping letting it sleep overnight (and instead shut it down). Nothing helps.
The problem occurred for me again just now, which is what prompted me to check the support boards. When I open my MBP after it's been is sleep mode, it makes the little disk drive startup noise, but the display remains black. Sometimes when I open my MBP, the keyboard will light up (sometimes only for a second, and other times for longer). Just now, when I held down the escape key, it made that little "pinging" noise over and over again while I held it down (in the Sounds menu under System Preferences, they call it "Funk"). And what I thought was the most interesting was that when I pressed play on my Apple Remote it started playing the first song in my iTunes library. All the controls on the Apple Remote worked fine - I could play and pause the song, skip to a different song, adjust the volume, etc. Yet the screen remained black. Pushing keys and using the trackpad did nothing. I tried closing the computer again and this time the light remained on (instead of flashing like it does when it's in sleep mode). But when I opened it back up, the screen still stayed black. So obviously, the computer was running fine, it was simply a problem with the display.
Does the Apple Remote work for anyone else when they're experiencing this problem?
This problem is really starting to get on my nerves! Hopefully Apple will do something about it soon!
Kate

• To Sleep or not to Sleep... help for a noob

Hi there,
New to macs and needed to know wether its better to put my new iMac intel to sleep or to log it off...
Hope you can help....

You have to look at other things too when considering whether to put to sleep or switch off.
Power Supply Issues
Do you live in a country which has a good, regular and reliable power supply. Which does not suffer, brown outs or black outs or power spikes.
If you do live in a country with a good supply then I would invest in a Surge protection Power strip, plug your Mac into that and then just put it to sleep.
The Weather
Do you live somewhere where storms are very frequent? If you do then you are probably used to pulling electrical equipment from the wall when a lightening storm is happening. So the same precaution should be done here.
Security and location
Would it be more secure to put switch the Mac off? For example is it's location going to present itself to anything liquid or which could otherwise damage the machine.
Remember putting a system to sleep, especially if you haven't logged out and then pulling it out from the wall will certainly do it damage.

• Wscript.sleep Problem please help!!!!!!

Hi, I'm just a newbie with SAP GUI API. I'm recording SAP and saving the script and making changes to it in Visual basic.net I'm running version SAP 6.40 I think.
Below is the code which is generated by SAP record function. And I have added some changes with the code below
WScript.Sleep(3000)
As far as I can see I cannot see any errors with the script. But I just keep getting errors saying "Object require" 'Wscript'-....
when I run the script in SAP with the play and record tool.
I just want some way to slow down the script. By entering somesort of timer function between each of the lines. The only way I found was to insert WScript.Sleep(xxx) between each of the lines. So if someone made a recording of the processes it will be possible to view it by running the script and see the process recorded running slowly. I really really need some help as this for a project I am on. This is urgent.... So Any feedback for a fix or a work around will be much appreciated.. Thanks in advance
If Not IsObject(application) Then
       Set SapGuiAuto  = GetObject("SAPGUI")
       Set application = SapGuiAuto.GetScriptingEngine
End If
If Not IsObject(connection) Then
       Set connection = application.Children(0)
End If
If Not IsObject(session) Then
       Set session    = connection.Children(0)
End If
If IsObject(WScript) Then
       WScript.ConnectObject session,     "on"
       WScript.ConnectObject application, "on"
End If
session.findById("wnd[0]").maximize

Dim StartTime, EndTime, TimeIt
StartTime=Timer
session.findById("wnd[0]/tbar[0]/okcd").text = "/nbibs"
session.findById("wnd[0]").sendVKey 0
session.findById("wnd[0]/tbar[0]/okcd").text = "/ndwdm"
session.findById("wnd[0]").sendVKey 0
EndTime=Timer
TimeIt=EndTime-Starttime
If TimeIt>10 Then
MsgBox("Response time alert:"&TimeIt)
End If
WScript.Sleep(3000)
Next

You've probably long ago fixed this, but I checked your code and it does work fine. I expect you have an odd extra character in your original file somewhere.
