Z50-75: Gradient colors, color banding, dark/ dim display (Faulty display?)

Thank you for yout kind reply! Everything seems fine on my FHD LCD TV. A couple of days ago I updated my video card driver to the most recent one. I can't recall if the problem was there with the old driver too though, as I started watching movies after updating my driver. The problem is not unique to videos, but harder to spot while browsing or doing basic stuff. I've searched the web for problems associated with my model's display and it seems others are having this issue too. If it wasn't a diagnosed as a problem but the poor quality of the LCD I would be very disappointed. I'm desperate for a solution.
Happy Holidays to you, too!

Hi, I bought a Z50-75 yesterday with r6 m255dx. I had the same issue, but for me updating the drivers (after downloading AMD's Catalyst software) solved the brightness issue. I also bought a G505s today (Christmas presents) and the initial brightness difference in favor of the G505 was very apparent before the fix, the Z50-75 had approx 70% brightness of the G505 on max setting. After the fix, the z50-75 is slightly brighter than the G505s, which is already in line with available statistics. However, the driver update did not fix another very annoying issue - the displays seems to have like 65k color depth instead of 32 bit. Especially in the red and orange parts I can literally count the various shades on gradient surfaces, and can not make this issue dissappear by adjusting color settings (I tried adjusting all settings through complete range). In comparison the G505s has a much better display (no similar issue noticeable at all) despite the fact that it was cheaper and if I recall correctly, it has the same display as the g500 which is a significantly older model compared to z50-75. Also, colors of g505 are much more saturated on base settings (about 25%) and lack the strong bluish tone of the display of z50-75... But the saturation and the bluish cast can be mitigated with adjusting color settings, the problem is with the very limited color depth - it looks like traveling back 20 years in time. If anyone has a suggestion to solve this, I would really appreciate - I would hate to give notebook for present that has such a bad display. Thanks

• NEED HELP in color tone (bright/dark)

i have a database that have data ranges from -5 to 5, where -5 is bright green, 0 is black and 5 is bright red. so from this you know as the value goes nearer to 0 the color will go darker but somehow i do not know how to implement it into a graphic example: g2.fill(new Rectangle2D.Double(iRow[co]*4, iCol[co]*4, 30, 30)); using graphic 2d.
So does anyone have know the way or have any algoritm or any possible help that is near to my problem or whatever as i'm desperate in this... Thanks!

Ok so i know that (255,0,0) is red, (0,255,0) is green and (0,0,0) is black.
As i'm poor in math so are there anyone that can think of the algorithm on how to implement a 5.0000 which is (255,0,0), -5.0000 which is (0,255,0) and 0.0000 which is (0,0,0) so that i can base on the database value which is a 4 dec places value where they are shown above to generate the right color out in the right tone. Will appreciate any help possible thanks!

• Colors get progressively darker in Photoshop?

hey, guys- I'm new and using photoshop CS5 and use a Mac 10.6.4. I draw cartoons, so i often do linework and a layer beneath for colors. But whenever i use the brush and make several strokes, the colors get progressively darker until turning into black. I have a feeling this has a fancy photoshop name and i accidentally turned it on, but I don't know the name.. This is really holding back a lot of my projects and if you have anything to help please tell!
Thank you

Ohhhh- thank you so much!!!!

• Why multi-colored horiz bands?

I've been having trouble with an Echo Mia MIDI PCI card that's been crashing the computer. Recently I pulled it out, then re-installed the card and the driver. Now suddenly I'm getting a screen full of multi-colored vertical bands that scroll and change and quickly make it impossible to see the desktop. The only other software I've installed recently is the latest update to Windowshade.
Seems like a strange coincidence that something besides the Mia MIDI suddenly went bad. Can anyone tell me, is this a graphics card problem or worse?
Thanks,
Greg Reyna

When I looked the three fans were spinning; two in the computer and one on the Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB graphics card. When I removed the card I saw lots of crud caked between the fan and the heat sink. It is of course possible that the fan wasn't spinning as it should, and heat built up enough to crack the plastic ring. The green plastic AGP retaining ring was broken when I opened the box, not just cracked but broken in two. This must have been a fairly recent development because it was ok some weeks back when I opened the box, cleaned out the dust and removed the Mia MIDI card after a crash . Do you know if I can replace the ring?
If heat is causing the screen garbage why was everything ok during the time I installed the OS and after? This may have been as long as an hour and a half. By the time this was happening, I had already cleaned the fan and removed all the other cards. I didn't replace the slot covers so there was even more ventilation because of that.

• Color is off on my MBP 17" display - cool/purple bias won't go away

I'm disappointed in the color setup of my new MBP 17" Unibody display, compared with the original (2006) MBP 17" that it's replacing. That old machine looked great right out of the box, but on the new one colors tend towards the cool, with a purple tinge in the highlights. Fleshtones look completely wrong, and the contrast is milky, with lifted blacks.
I've gone through the calibration process several times, and while I've improved the contrast, the cool/purple bias will not go away. I bring up the same photo on my old machine and my new machine, and the old one has natural skin tones and rich contrast, and the new one has purple highlights and off skin tones.
I've been told that perhaps one explanation is the fact that the new machines use LED backlights?
Unless I can get this monitor set up properly it's going to be pretty useless to me. Would a hardware calibration tool such as the Spyder help me get the display profile where I need it to be, or is there something inherent in the display hardware that gives it this odd color palette?

The Genius Bar's a suspect place to get possibly complicated CMS/ICC profiling calibration device-level guidance, let alone investigating Apple's apparent driver/default settings to their various and sundry display! You're a brave man! (oops! Forgot I was on the <Apple> Forums- yikes!)...
Seriously, I wouldn't expect any typical Apple Genius Bar denizen to know the ins and outs of what many pre-press folks Graphic Designers, and publishing pros only know of, not know well.
I learned a long time ago, because I was charged with designing, building, testing, and deploying a magazine publishing company-wide CMS, and I didn't want to go hungry, so I learned <fast> ;^)
The first step that I do to eliminate the color cast that does indeed 'color' (sic) almost all stock Apple displays and replace it with a pleasing, more reality-based, warmer overall but with 'clean' color ramps and solids, as well as an accurate white point and proper color and tonal balance. There's the 'free' OS X software-based method, and there's the X-Rite ColorMunki, Pantone Huey, Spyder 3 Elite, or Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display or Photo... the 'free' OS X method's probably familiar to you- Sys Prefs>Displays>Color>Calibrate>Expert Mode. Perform this simple & brief procedure in a room or surrounding free of harsh, specular lighting, like strong fluorescent lights, or strong sunlight, etc.. Then just follow the directions on each panel in the sequential series of Dialog Boxes, and use the more traditional Mac 1.8 Gamma setting generally and a 6500k White Point; mainly because those two are the 'Old Skool' (well, actually, 5200-5500k White Point's more common setting from Back in the Day, but 6500k is an adequately LONG way from the cold, 'glacial-effect' harshness of any higher WP), and the 1.8+6500k combo strikes an pretty good balance between ultimate accuracy and pleasing warmth. DO NOT check the 'Use Native White Point' box, save the ColorSync display Profile you've just helped yer Mac create for ALL Users' usage, and make certain, before you exit Displays, that you hike on over to the other side of the button, 'Display', and make certain that you've unchecked the 'Automatically Adjust Brightness...' box... NOW exit Sys Prefs, and behold your Band-Aid First Step at getting away from the cold and slanted world of Apple Default Display Profiles. You'll need WAY more accuracy of a good hardware calibration unit if you want to get closer, much closer to Display Nirvana... which brings us to the Next Step. If you've got an LED backlit LCD screen, you'll only need to borrow a unit from someone, or have it done, far less frequently than in days past, because you don't have to concern yourself with the color/brightness/White Point/Gamma/contrast 'drift' of fluorescent-backlit screens, which dim and drift as they age, or the 'phospher aging' of a CRT screen, LED backlit screens need no 'warmuo time', and stay much more consistent throughout their lifespan. Still, you need to somehow get ahold of preferably a Gretag-Macbeth Eye-One Display 2 or the more expensive but more versatile for creating custom ICC/Colorsync Profiles for all your input, output, and display devices, but is about 6 times more expensive than the really good Eye-One Display 2 display calibrator, OR one of the more recent Spyder units, or even an X-Rite ColorMunki (the 'Photo' model, for most users here). I like to avoid the ColrMunki because, amongst other things, it's WAY hard to do what the instructions say you need to in order to produce an accurate profile, and its design gives you way too many opportunities to damage your display. The Huey's a little too basic and less accurate overall than the others, but is still WAY better than our Sys Prefs profile, of which the only reason to perform is to stave off insanity.
Read the manual/PDF, try it slowly and carefully, especially the ColorMunki, which I like less than the others for the aforementioned reasons... experiment with creating two different hardware display profiles with ANY of these calibrators- one with the traditional Mac 1.8 Gamma, and one with the more au courant 2.0 Gamma setting, both with the 6500k White Point, and see which one you prefer for your own use and your own tastes. Even though most calibration unit manuals will order you to stick with the 2.0 Gamma setting, there are many instances where the 1.8 is superior in actual CMS use. Where those instances are is a whole other post; stay focussed on doing the above, and you'll never regret the time, money and energy you put into it- it's a GREAT investment, and one that will go most, if not all of the way you want to go in terms of fixing your Apple Caste' default display conundrum... good luck! =^D
Best,
Charlie

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head. Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt. I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation. Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

• MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks.

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....
Nick
PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

• Gradient background color for custom tooltip

Hi,
I have created a custom tooltip where I am using light gray as background color.
(I have created a separate custom tooltip component.)
Now user wants to have it with a gradient effect (is that what its called?).
Basically, this gray color should be more dark at the top region of tooltip.
This color should gradually go lighter from top to bottom.
Can you tell me how this can be done?
Thanks and regards,
Amey

Hi,
Thank you for reply.
Can you please tell me where do I have to set this?
This is how my custom tooltip component looks: -

<mx:VBox xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
implements="mx.core.IToolTip" width="{txtBody.width + 20}" height="{txtBody.height + 20}"
backgroundColor="#E0E5E8"
cornerRadius="10" horizontalAlign="center" paddingTop="5">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
[Bindable]
public var bodyText:String;
// Implement required methods of the IToolTip interface;
// these methods are not used in this example, though.
public var _text:String;
public function get text():String {
return _text;
public function set text(value:String):void {
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:Text id="txtBody" htmlText="{bodyText}" textAlign="left" />
</mx:VBox>
And I want background color '#E0E5E8' to be varying in shade from top to bottom

• Change background color ? - Too dark !

Is it possible to change the colors of the interface in LR 1.3 ?
I think the grey are too dark and makes it hard to see.
I think I can changes it in the "edit - preferences - interface" menu,
but I can't seems to make the background lighter.
Can someone help ?

>Is it possible to change the colors of the interface in LR 1.3 ?
I think the grey are too dark and makes it hard to see.
The changes that you can make are only for the background of the photograph that you are working on and how the screen looks in "Lights Out" Mode.
>I think I can changes it in the "edit - preferences - interface" menu,
but I can't seems to make the background lighter.
That is where you change the background colour. You will see the different background "colour" (black, greys, white) in two places:
If you goto Lights-Out mode (i.e dim or hide the Lightroom panels and menus). Repeatedly press L key to cycle through different Lights-out settings.
The Background colour setting determines the background shown behind your image. You can see this in Library Loupe View or in Develop module.
If you are looking to change the colours of the Lightroom interface panels, then you are out-of-luck.
