Z61M finger print reader has never worked

I was just wondering does the reader lite up? From new I have not been abel to get this to work. I have uninstalled reinstalled and updated the drivers, I have even gone in to the bios looking. I read the trouble guides about running PC doctor but I can not find any thing in there to test the finger reader. I have even checked the flat ribbon cable to make sure it was clean and seated good. Mine does not lite up at all. This would be a very nice feature for my son who is blind. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Biometrics isn't for everyone, and I'm uniquely qualified to say the Authentec readers included with Thinkpads are the best fingerprint scanners available to the general public. It is an electrostatic reader that doesn't rely on optics or lighting (I get the impression you'd like to see either a skin light for ornamentation and a backlight such as the cheap scanners I'm going to describe in the next paragraph....and you'll never find either on an Thinkpad. The Authentec scanner is the most tolerant of dirt and resins every finger picks while still delivering an accurate reading and maintaining real security. Those light up scanners you're describing are the easiset to thwart and can be spoofed with a mini mag light and amber filter especially if you can tailgate the last person  within 90 seconds of their successful logn.
Early fingerprint readers used backlighting just like a mini photocopier to read fingerprints and they're horrible, the lamps dim, their reader platens scratch with usage but that cool red light sells a sense of security. Even modern biometric door sensors have red lights but many don't even require it since they use the same brand of scanners from Authentec found inside Thinkpads and the red light is just for ornament, night lites and those obsessed with Cylon Model 6 that it shapes every part of their life, red car and red undies.
You should ensure it is enabled in the BIOS and set your BIOS to default /F10
shutdown, let it power off for  some secs
return and look for the B&W fingerprint menu or a error and simple beep warning the sensor isn't found.
Forget the PCDoctor diags since they'll just advise if it is connected and readable or missing and malfucnmoitnign.
Borking around the bios settings can throw the sensor into a conflict when in some instances our users have tried to enable the nonexistant paralletl  port and activated Infrared while activating and dinking up the COM port which the 60's use to assign to the biometric sensor and just f10 to the bios is enough to eliminate those little conflicts.
Since the system allows 3 failed swipes b4 reboot, a blind person's heightened tactile senses won't have any problems and likely hit it  the first time every time.
Useful fingerprint reader tips when enrolling and logging on:
1. During enrollment, you can mix and match your angles since the user and fingers are stored as an average, so a right thumb doens't have to be enrolled as five perfectly straight swipes, and if you are accustomed to logging on while standing and sitting,  than enroll two prints while standing and three while sitting or versa, it makes a big difference.
2. Your finger is a roller skate,  not a rocking chair....to many users become frustrated with repated failed logons because corporate users are typically enrolled witht he assistance of an IT pro but fail to adequately swipe the platen used to capture prints.  At close obsersance, most people barely succeed to logon since they baRELY SKIM THE FIRST HALF OF THE PLATEN WHEN YOU SHOULD BE MOVING YOUR FINGERPRINT THROUGH THE SENSOR THE WAY A ROLLER SKATER KICKS THEIR FEET ACROSS THE FLOOR.
Too many users get by or get angry when they're just rubbing upwards across the top half of the sensor, this phenomenom occurs more frequently to women and espeically younger and elderly women since younger womens fingers are still reaching maximum size but smaller fingers are harder to capture at the same speed as a mans fat thumb. Ladies have better and more frequently lognosn on the first try if they scrape their finger across the sensor at a slower pace but not so slow it stands still since a steady finger wil ruin the logon.
3. Keep a backup fingter, the old joke is "cut off their finger and steal an ID, that is stupid on more levels than can be described but a good idea is setup a trusted person as a backup / emergency logon account and reserving your ring finger for this purpose is an easy way to create the ID.
Example, when creating your profile and clicking the idiograms of ten fingers, skip your ring finger and ask your husband to use whatever finger he'd like and it just assumes the profile of your ring finger.  since that is the finger of matrimony it is aprophao and easy to remember as the backup account that still logson securelty to your box.
Don't just sit there, take a second and use the Kudo's button to compliment the people who help you.

I looked for software and found a suggestion which I down loaded. Now the finger print reader does not work either on Internet Explorer or on Firefox. So I had to do a reset to an early time to get rid of that soft ware. We are back to where I started, with the finger print reader working fine on Explorer 11 and it does not work at all on FireFox. There must be some work around, has this not occurred with other folks.

  • Tx2500z Finger Print Reader stopped working

    Hi all,
My finger print reader randomly stopped working.  It looks fine in device manager, but when I pull up the software it says that it is disconnected.
As I said, this happened out of the blue - it had been working, then it stopped, without me changing any major software/drivers.  I've tried updating the driver but to no avail.
Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

If its anything like the TX1000 series, then your next problem will be your wireless card, then your DVD drive.  Then you will need to shut the laptop on and off several times to get it to boot.  Then, finially, it will no longer boot at all.  If you google your problem, you may find, as I have with the TX1000, that this scenerio is playing out over and oer, and HP is not recalling the defective motherboards.  I wish you the best, if your under warranty, get it in as soon as possible!

  • HP Envy 15-j151ea Notebook Finger print reader

    Hi all,
I've made an account just because I got the HP Envy 15-j151ea two days ago, yet the finger print reader is not working at all.
Going to "Sign-in options" on the Windows 8 homescreen, the option to sign in via fingerprint is blurred out.
Going to the HP site tells me I need SimplePass. I uninstalled it and reinstalled the software, however, there's nothing about setting up fingerprint at all. I have the driver on my PC, which is recognised and has been updated despite the fact it was already at the current version (you never know).
Going to the HP site and look at the "Using HP SimplePass Fingerprint Reader" page shows images I've never seen on SimplePass.
This is getting extremely frustrating now, I only wanted to see how it worked, yet I need to jump through about 400 hoops just to find I've not gotten any further than when I started.
    Any help is much appreciated.

    Hello JAMIEInc,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I see you are having problem with the HP SimplePass Finger Print reader.
Have a look through this document here. Troubleshooting a Fingerprint Reader (Windows 8). It's a little more specific to your problem than simply setting up the SimplePass software and addresses troubleshooting things that aren't going as planned. You may need to update your BIOS and enable to Biometric support in your BIOS, which is the first and second thing covered in this document.

    hello,
there are several fingerprint readers available for BlackBerry OS5/6/7, for instance this one:
    http://crackberry.com/uk-police-issued-blackberry-smartphone-comes-fingerprint-scanner
On the other hand I don't know if the manufacturers have already designed one that will be compatible with the Z10.
That being said, apart from the police I do not see who could benefit from such a feature, the device is quite bulky.

  • Finger print reader asks for password only

My finger print reader doesn't work the way it used to. It only asks for my finger print when logging on to Windows. At all other times it only asks for my windows password which is very annoying. What's wrong -it used to work fine. I reformatted my hdd and downloaded the latest drivers and programs using the system update program. My finger print reader version is 3.3.2.27. I have a T400 with Windows 7 Pro.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Additional info:
I installed client security solutions 8.3 and now the reader works with my windows apps, but not with my internet pages using firefox. Before I did a reformat, it worked properly with windows logon, windows apps and internet pages.
    Why isn't this working properly?

  • Keyboard shortcut for Copies has never worked in print dialog

I don't know if this is the right place to report a bug, but it has always irritated me that the keyboard shortcut ALT-C to move the focus to the Copies field has never worked in the Adobe Reader print dialog.  It should work as the underscore exists in "Copies:"  I use the shortcut all the time in Office whenever i want to print more than one copy.  It would be nice if this would work in Adobe Reader also.  It should work as the underscore exists in "Copies:"
