Z61p 9540CTO Advanced Dock to get DVI-D working at 1080p [1920x1080] WUXGA

Please help it is difficult to call Lenovo support and get answers--so this forum is my last resort.
I have a Thinkpad Z61p type 9540-CTO with 4Gb RAM, Core Duo Intel 2.33 Mhz, and ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 512MB WUXGA integrated graphics and DVD MultIburner, and Adv. Dock with DVI pass through feature.
QUESTION 1:
I would like to know if I purchase a DVI-I to HDMI 1.3 certified cable that it will work to display on a 1080P 46" LCDTV/Monitor?  I need the highest resolution (1920 by 1080) possible to read text from IE or Windows programs from several feet away.
QUESTION 2:
If I upgrade to the ThinkPad Ultrabay Enhanced Blu-ray DVD Burner p/n 43N3200 in the Adv. Dock bay, will I be able to watch BR DVD's correctly or not? (assuming I have the right software player)
Other: The Z61p has XP Pro SP2, BIOS 2.22, Adv. Dock that includes DVI-D graphics pass through port.  I am leary of XPSP3 or Vista based on other negative threads.
Potential issues:
1. [This info is new to me and was not available at time of purchase]  I just possibly learned the Z61P does not "support" Advanced Dock DVI-D: True or False? so will DVI-A or DVI-I function in Adv. Dock? If so what resolution?
Ref: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-61232
2.  [This info is new to me and was not available at time of purchase, and Q7300 was not yet available] In the Thinkpad Blue-ray Users Guide it says only the Nvidia Quadro 7300 "supports" 1920 by 1080 without jerking video.  Is this true?   The
Ultrabay Enhanced Blu-ray Burner - Publications Ref:

PS. Undocked on a plane, I also want be able to watch BR DVD's on the internal 15.4" LCD that supports 1920 by 1200. I have several 9 cell batteries already.
I found several conflicting threads with above info with the exact same video card and Adv. Doc that I have except it's about a T not a Z....http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&thread.id=4832

I don't have any response for your first question, but I might be able to give an answer to your second one.
I have the same laptop with 2GB of RAM and recently took the plunge and bought the Ultrabay Enhanced Blu-ray Burner despite the fact that it explicitly said that it would only work with some R series models. When I initially tried it, Blu-ray playback was unacceptably jerky. Then I discovered that there is a place in the ATI Catalyst Center settings where you can set the video acceleration level of the graphics chipset. There are settings like "optimize for battery life", "optimize for balanced use",  and "optimize for performance". It defaulted to "optimize for battery life" (even in the highest battery profiles, for some reason). When I tried the highest setting, things were very smooth.
I have to qualify my comments a little, though. My main aim in buying the drive was for watching high-def movies from the laptop on long overseas flights. For that reason, most of my experimentation has revolved around playing back movies from the ripped images of Blu-ray discs copied onto the hard drive. (I upgraded to a 320GB hard drive, just for this.) Under those conditions (i.e., playback from hard drive), I can even keep the laptop in the "maximum battery life" power profile and the ATI Catalyst setting to "optimize for performance" still gives me smooth playback with 10 to 20% CPU use. However, I'm not sure how this would be affected if you wanted to play straight from the optical drive. (Probably not much.)
One other thing I should point out is that you may have to play with some settings to get the best image quality while watching Blu-ray discs. This is admittedly not so much a function of the drive itself but more of the software you'd be using and the graphics chipset. I tried the HQV high-def benchmark disc and the initial results were less than stellar. I was using PowerDVD software for Blu-ray playback (WinDVD was unable to play a Blu-ray disc image from the hard drive). Most of my image quality issue seemed to be related to deinterlacing. It turns out that PowerDVD has its own deinterlacing settings, and so does the ATI chipset. I believe I found the best combination by turning the deinterlacing off in the software and allowing it to happen only in the chipset. (Or vice versa; I can look it up to verify, if you need me to.)
My beef with this drive now is finding a solution to give me drive letter access to rewritable Blu-ray discs. I've gotten used to the convenience of this for DVDs and CDs. The software situation for doing this is pretty murky. Nero 8 seems like it might be capable of doing this, but I don't have it and I'm not sure I'd like to buy it yet just for this feature. The other authoring software I already had (Roxio and Sonic DLA) is unable to treat a BD-RE disc like a drive letter, and the software bundled with the drive doesn't seem capable of this either (although it seems like it can write data to a BD-RE disc by defining an explicit session; the old-fashioned way). If you come across any solution for drive letter access to rewritable (or write-once) Blu-ray discs, let me know.

  • Problem using DVD/CD drive with Thinkpad Advanced Dock -- drive gets "lost" on start-up

Hello, I have a Thinkpad Advanced Docking station, a Thinkpad T60p, and an UltraBay Slim Super Multi-Burner Drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4083N) that I use in the docking station's expansion bay.  Whenever I restart the docking station and computer, the multi-burner drive becomes "lost" -- I have to physically remove the drive and re-insert it for the computer to recognize the drive.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Does anyone know how to get around it?

Yes, I have had the same problem. I have the HP Pavilion 14.1" but similar stuff. I don't know if you noticed searching but there are a LOT of people who have this problem. Apple won't help me because they say its not them. HP and Costco Tech Support can't figure it out and I don't have another 3+ hours to sit on the phone more to figure it out. Its an issue with Apple and Windows believe it or not, I am considering selling my ipod and not using itunes to purchase music and movies anymore. So are friends. The ONE way to fix it is you go into the regedit and delete the upper and lower drive filters for the drive. The problem with this is now when you go back into itunes it will no longer recognize your drive. So two options you are left with A) Itunes working without your cd drive working at all OR B) your cd drive working for everything BUT itunes and when you use itunes you get that message about not finding your cd drive. So no matter what you do, itunes and your drive will never work together. That is just how it is and NO SOLUTION has been found. Apple doesn't know or care. HP or Microsoft has no idea because its something Apple did. And despite people frantically trying to find solutions online, there really doesn't seem to be any to this point. If someone finds a viable working solution to this problem to get your drive and itunes to work TOGETHER even after restarting, I would be VERY HAPPY as well as 'computerguy'!

  • Z61p no longer boots to WinXP when on Advanced Dock

Any advice on how to troubleshoot this would be appreciated.
When NOT connected to the dock, the system boots fine.
When connected to the dock, the system will not boot past the Thinkpad screen comes up and the system hangs
I can't think of any specific event that occurred when this started happening. ie: I did not take it off of the dock, and then put it back on the dock, with that being an event that started this.

Is the ultrabay hdd inserted in the dock? If so, what happens when you boot without it in the dock?
Do you have any usb drives attached to the dock? If you exclude all other devices, except for HDD0 from the boot order in bios, what happens?
Sorry for all the questions, but the answers may be relevant or help, I hope

  • Any luck with graphics cards on the advanced dock?

Looking for some advice on which graphics card to purchase for use with the Lenovo advanced dock. I've tried - unsuccessfully - to use the ATI Radeon HD 3650 from VisionTek. The dimensions were right and the card fits, but I'm having no luck getting it to work.
Has anyone gotten this or another ATI graphics card to work with the advanced dock? There is very little documentation on this. Do I have to downgrade the graphics card to the X1300? The HD 3650 has a better spec, incl 512Mb vs 256Mb on the X1300.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
    -Roel.

I have a T61p with the FX570 internal card, 4Gb RAM, 80Gb HDD, running Windows Vista 64 bit Ultimate edition.  Since Vista (64) will only support one video driver, I had to remove the X1300 that I had in the dock for XP Pro (32).  So I bought the FX570 (PNY VCQFX570-PCIE-PB 256M RT ) from NewEgg and dropped it in.  In Vista, I had to delete the internal card from Device Manager and reinstall the Driver Suite from Nvidia.  The Suite picked up both cards and I chose to use the Dock as primary.  I did not have to change ANY BIOS settings, I left those alone.  I used the card's CD to load the drivers, NOT Lenovo's.  I do not use the NVidia Control Panel to change any settings, just Vista's Adapter Properties.  Both monitors are running at full res (1920x1200 @ 32bit), both are DVI connected and both are 24" Dell's.
    * I ran the exact same setup in Windows XP, with the execption of FX570, with no issue at all.*
    * When you install the card in the dock, you will need to "tweak" it in the slot to move the fan away from the underside of the dock.  If you don't the on-board fan will contact the dock and make a heck of a racket!*

  • T400 with docking stations, ThinkPad Advanced Dock and ThinkPad Dock II

    Hello,
I think of buying the ThinkPad T400 with one of these docking stations: ThinkPad Advanced Dock or ThinkPad Dock II.
I have several technical questions and haven't found neither appropriate information, nor the way to get it.
    Here are my questions:
    1. Do these docking stations support DVI when T400 with integrated (not discrete) graphics is connected?
    2. Where can I find a complete list of UltraBay devices supported by each one of these docking stations?
    Thanks

I have a T400 with integrated graphics and recently purchased the Advanced Mini Dock 250410U.  The Advanced Dock and Advanced Mini Dock support DVI pass-through.  I looked into this before purchasing as well.
This page will confirm the feature:  http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-72148.  Also see reference guide for docking stations: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4TPJF4 which says ThinkPad Dock II is discontinued.  This brochure says the Advanced Mini Dock does not support Ultrabay, but the Advanced Dock does.  http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/options_iso/tp_docking_solutions_june09.pdf .

  • PCI-e Graphics in Advanced Dock isn't worth the loss of the Undock Button !!

    Greetings,
After using ATI Radeon X1300 in the advanced Dock with my W500 (4061-38U) for over a year, I'm in clear position to conclude, it isn't worth it. Here are the reasons why you should not have this setup :
     - the complete loss of one of the TOP features of using a Docking Station : the possibility of fast dock/undock the system without restart.
     - the use of PCI-e 1X is rubbish performance.
     - the native 1900x1200 resolution of the 4061-38U , which is very frustrating to read. So this screen ends up not being used at all.
     - the possibility to connect 2 screens : 1 using DVI, the other using VGA with very little quality loss depending on the screen, cable and resolution.
     - the docking station operating in high fan noise (though I had this worked)
     - eventually the dock becomes unstable due to power and heat issues
     - the waist of time, thinking on how to continue being stubborn and approaching different setups to improve performance in thee issue :
->Lenovo USB DVI box, (Slow performance, USB Bandwidth consumer. CPU Consumer)
-> Other USB DVI products ( same issues)
-> Matrox Dual/triple Display (likely to be of slow performance, PCMCIA card is not part of the Laptop Docking procedure, don't know if it requires restart, overpriced in my point of view)
     - lastly and not less important , the waist of space: it is possible to operate the laptop lid closed, and so arrange one of the LCD's to be over the Dock, VESA table mounted.
So as of yesterday, I got back to this simpler yet more efficient setup : W500 + Advanced Dock + 1 Viewsonic 22" LCD operating in landscape mode + 1 Viewsonic 22" LCD operating in portrait mode + backup disk in dock's UltraBay + external USB mouse and keyboard.

  • T61 with Advanced Dock and PCI-e graphics card?

Purchased T61 laptop with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M graphics (Type: 7662-CTO).
Purchased ThinkPad Advanced Dock for use with PCI-e graphics card for multi-monitors.  (Type: 2553)
    OS = Vista Ultimate
Purchased PCI-e graphics card:   NVidia Quadro NVS 440  1x
Purchased four Samsung SyncMaster 740bx monitors
Opened Advanced Dock.  Installed Quadro NVS 440 card in PCI-e slot.  Card fits perfectly.
Laptop using most recent BIOS v 1.26
Set BIOS config for PCI-e graphics and DVI default monitor.
Connected all four monitors via DVI.
Laptop in dock, turned on.  BIOS screen displays correctly on external monitors.  Microsoft Corp. screen displays with progress bar.  Screen then goes blank and next step should be the Windows login.  Login screen never displays, however.  Boot-up of laptop halts at this point and never proceeds.
Removed PCI-e card from dock, and placed laptop back in dock.  Laptop boots correctly to Windows.
Assumed faulty dock.  Called Lenovo for replacement dock.  Replacement dock also fails to boot with PCI-e graphics card.
Next assumed bad card.  Tried different card.  ATI FireMV 2400 1x.  Card fits in dock perfectly.  Laptop still fails to boot with card in dock.
Called Lenovo.  Asked for a list of cards that will work in the dock.  Tech support did not know.  I asked if anyone at Lenovo has ever seen a T61 laptop work with the Advanced Dock and a PCI-e graphics card.  Tech said no.  Issue has been escalated to engineering.  I still do not have an answer as to which PCI-e cards, if any, will work in the Advanced Dock.
    Help please.

I spent some time surfing through product release letters and data sheets for the grafic cards offered by Lenovo, no where, as far as I could see, does it say that they are compatible with the advanced dock. What is also interesting, they say for PCs they are only tested for 2 screens, but you found the document MIGR-67464 where they show how to configure 4. [confused smiley]
It looks as though you and RBS have found possible solutions for 4 screens, congrats to all
However, I don't want to be the "party pooper" here, but why doesn't your T61 boot in the dock with graphics card? This is still puzzling me, and to be honest I haven't as yet been able to come up with a reason or probable cause as to why

  • Advanced Dock Problems

Received an Advanced Dock 250310U (IBM logo)
    http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkPad_Advanced_Dock
I apologize if this isn't posted in the right place. Don't believe I've ever posted here before.
Since this Dock is specific to these models, I thought this was the best place to start.
Hoping against all hope that someone here will recognize this or be able to shed some badly needed light on it.
In almost 30 years of IT\Computer work, this is right near the top of the weirdest problems I've ever dealt with.
Testing with two [Integrated Graphics] T61s: a 14.1" XPPro & 15.x" Win7Pro and both have identical problems.
Everything EXCEPT it's Ultrabay (media bay) seems to work OK. But the problems with the ultrabay are extensive.
The only info I can find has to do with the video card & related headaches.  I can't even get that far.
At first, I couldn't get the Ultrabay to work at all. Then, all of a sudden, it worked with a small 60GB Seagate hdd,
but would not work with my larger WD 320GB Scorpio or ANY optical drives whatsoever. Testing with numerous
CDRW-DVDROM & DVD Multi drives, there is no problem with any of these drives.
All drives (hdds & optical) read perfectly in both laptop bays. The problems are all with the Dock ultrabay.
After many hours of troubleshooting and reading as much as we could find on the Internet there was no change.
Then again, all of a sudden, it started reading even my larger 320GB Scorpio hdd. But still no optical drives.
More hours of troubleshooting and then - out of the blue - it started reading the optical drives.
But that's when it really started getting interesting. When it would read the hdd's ok, it would not read *any* optical drives
correctly. The rare times we got it to read the optical drives, it would not read *any* hdds. We have never been able to
get it to correctly read a hdd and then an optical drive or visa versa.
When it reads the hdds but no optical drives, the Combo drives would be recognized as "Removable disk" with or without a drive letter.
The DVD-Multi would just not show up (explorer) but shows up in DevMgr as "USB drive" with nothing in Computer.
No matter what after that, the optical drive types throw up a 'disk not formatted' warning and\or if you try to access the disk,
it demands that you insert a disk in the drive. Interestingly, the optical drives are incorrectly recognized as a USB hard drive in DevMgr
but in the rare case the optical drives are working, they are correctly recognized as Cdrom USB drives.
The mystery is how to get the OS to correctly recognize it and why does it change back and forth?! Why can't the bay
correctly read both types of drives at all times?!
When the hdds are working, they are correctly recognized as usb hdd in DevMgr. When they are not working, they have a
USB error in the DevMgr USB section. Removing and re-detecting does nothing to fix it, or any of the other problems.
I've tried every imaginable fix I could think of - including testing with a mass of Live disks (mostly built with WinPE).
I had the EXACT same problems with every single live cd\dvd as we did with the installed OS's.
I've cleaned out all unused and old USB entries and hidden devices that are able to be removed.
Both systems are 1000% clean and otherwise rock solid. Since they also exhibit exact same problems
with the live discs, the OS can't be the sole cause of this craziness. I've cleaned out the Dock with air as well.
I've made sure to secure the dock to the laptop with the key in every case. I've even installed clean OS's to check.
I'm at the point where I'm starting to suspect one of two things or both.
    1. The Middleton bios - could be causing a problem with the interface somehow.
Could be causing incompatibility issues. Can anyone confirm usage of this dock with that bios?
Tried changing settings (Sata controller to "Compatible" -- USB Always on etc.) no go.
    2. The dock itself is defective. Don't have another - unable to do a replacement troubleshoot.
I really wanted to get this working. I haven't even been able to get to the video card issue
but need to solve the ultrabay problems first.
I never imagined having problems like this with the ultrabay drives being so flaky.
I've taken numerous screen shots (in both XP and W7) of drive properties when they do work correctly
and when they don't work correctly. Screenshots are of DevMgr, Computer\Explorer, DiskMgr etc.
If anyone thinks that would help, I'll link or post them.
Lastly, I've figured out a workaround to getting the hdds to work in the bay.
I simply install them before booting\restarting and they seem to show up correctly 99% of the time. But then
none of the optical drives will work. Conversely, trying this method with the optical drives doesn't work at all.
Go figure. As of this time, I have absolutely no idea what makes the optical drives work.
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

Thank you very much for your input\response! I did clean the main interface\connector using Electo-Wash PX (Chemtronics) which did help. Before cleaning, it didn't read any drives at all. After cleaning it started reading but was very intermittent as described. I'm going to take a very close look at the connectors. Thanks again!

  • Question about dual-monitor setup - advanced dock + PCIe card

I just got a Z60t at work. I had been using a dual monitor setup, but it doesn't look like my current config is going to fly w/ the new machine. Anyway, here's what I've got:
Primary monitor: Acer AL2416W (1920x1200 DVI)
Secondary monitor: Dell 1901FP (1280x1024 VGA)
I've read that the advanced dock might be able to let me use this setup with the Z60t if i put a PCIe video card in it. So here are my questions:
    1. Will the advanced dock + PCIe video card allow me to run the two monitors listed above (I don't use the laptop screen at all)?
    2. Which PCIe cards are compatible with the advanced dock?
    3. Can I achieve the same resolutions with the advanced dock + PCIe card?
    4. Will I need to split the VGA output, or can i use VGA + DVI like I do now (since the Z60t has no native DVI support)?
    thanks!

Gary -- don't turn on the OS Display Mirroring.  Turn it off.
You want Aperture to control how it uses your dual monitors.  (You do not want the OS to determine it.)
Once you've turned off the OS "Display Mirroring", the set-up I specified above should give you what you want.
    That set-up is:
    "View → Main Viewer → {anything}", and
"View → Secondary Viewer → Alternate"
You must have the Viewer active (not the Browser) in order to change the "Secondary Viewer" setting.  If you are in the Browser, activate the Viewer by double-clicking an Image.
Let me know if that doesn't work.

  • Advanced Dock 25031 + ATI x300 + 22" = Audio Noise

    Hi there
It's a tough World to fit things in. I've had the Advanced Dock + z60M for 2 years now, of perfect working.
Lately i managed to add a 2nd hand ATI x300 Graphics PCIe card to it, and 2   22" Viewsonic Monitors.
Imediately i noticed a low frequency noise coming out of the "Line out" audio of the dock. This is never ending  and very anoying.
Noise stops when i disconnect both DVI cables from the advanced dock.
Could someone shed some light on this, please ?
I'm no such expert on this. My understanding is that both monitors (which are the same model) have their power source inducing electrical noise through their attached cables (lead and DVI) hence reaching the line out through the dock.
Maybe it's possible to solve this by adding some sort of in line filter to the DVI cable. Don't really know !
This doesn't happen if i unplug the Jack from the dock and connect it directly to the laptop ! I don't see this as the solution.
    Help please !

  • User misplaced key after locking 2504 Advanced docking station

My company employs lots of remote users, one user in particular has locked her T60 notebook onto her type 2504 Advanced Docking Station and 'misplaced' her key.  The machine won't boot now and I need to be able to get to the battery in order to begin to troubleshoot it.  It won't power on if I have the power cord plugged into the docking station.
Can anyone give me any pointers on how to undock this notebook so I can get her initial problem solved?
    Thanks,
    Eric O.

The canned answer is order some new keys.
A locksmith might be able to turn the lock barrel.  A toolsmith might be able to bust the machine out of there without damaging the base cover of the ThinkPad but maybe not without damage to the dock.
I was previously employed by Lenovo but have no formal role on this forum.

  • Thinkpad Advance Dock hard drive using ultra bay adapter

I just added an extra hard drive in my Advance Dock.  I initialized it and formatted it.  I can copy files to it.  Everything seems fine except that I cannot boot the computer with the hard drive inserted in the dock.  It locks up at the Lenovo splash screen - doesn't even get to the point that it's trying to load Windows Vista.
Any idea how to move past this?  It's a pain to have to remove and reinsert the hard drive every time I boot.  Thanks!
    Solved!

After spending about four hours on the phone with Lenovo support, installing updates (at their direction) that corrupted other programs, installing new docking station they sent, still no resolution.
Called my dell support guy.  He had the answer for me off the top of his head.  No research, no digging thru KB articles.
I am posting the resolution here in hopes that it will help some other poor soul who experienced my issue.
Go into BIOS.  Go to Config.  Go to USB.  Disable the option to boot from USB devices.
Computer now boots fine with hard disk installed in dock.  No issues.  Now if I can just fix my other programs that got broken....

  • No SPDIF (digital audio out) on Advanced dock with T60p/Vista

    Hello,
Has anyone used the RCA jack on the back of the advanced dock to send digital audio to a home theater system? It's not working for me. Here are some of the particulars of my situation.
Windows Vista SP1 (but I had the same problem under XP; yesterday's upgrade to Vista was in hopes of solving this)
Windows Media Center setup wizard recognizes the presence of the SPDIF output
Windows audio setup recognizes the presence of the SPDIF output and claims it's working (screenshot below)
Coaxial digital audio cable is good (tested this by using a SqueezeBox2 to pass audio through it into the receiver)
Receiver is good and configured properly (tested this by using a SqueezeBox2 to drive the same input over coaxial SPDIF)
Audio driver is SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio 6.10.1.5500, dated 7/24/2007
    ThinkPad T60p BIOS is 2.22
No sound comes out no matter what I do
    Here are a few screenshots.

There may be a clue in this last one. When I click "Test" my receiver "flaps" between displaying "Stereo" and "Dolby Digital" about twice per second, as though it's trying but failing to get a lock on the signal. Remember that the cable and receiver are tested good with another digital audio source.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts!

    Hey!
I reverted back to the old drivers and got my SPDIF Port working again.
Link to the old version is here:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=T_Series_Thinkpads&message.id=2486&query.id=3945...
Make sure you install this before the drivers after you uninstall the old ones:

Please let me know if this works for you.
