Z68A-GD65 G3 Booting takes long ...

Hey Forum,
when i start up my pc the first thing that appears is a prompt in the top left corner and at the bottom right it says "98" which changes later to "B4" and then it boots normal. Overall i would say this takes 1-2 minutes and then it boots normally.
So I dont think this is a normal process does anyone have a clue ?
Thank You
i7 - 2600k
Corsair Vengeance Ram 16 GB
Corsair 750 PSU
GTX 560 TWIN FROZR 2

Your board does not use a standard/legacy BIOS but an UEFI implementation.  So, when I said "UEFI/BIOS Version" I meant the same thing:
Quote
Bios is V23.0 / 20110706
Quote
Logitech G510
Steelseries XAI
Especially the XAI mices make problems on other boards has well, problems that have been fixed in newer UEFI/BIOS releases.
Can you please test without the mouse and a standard PS/2 keyboard attached?
Does the system still hang @98/B4 if you do not use the XAI/Logitech combination?

  • Z68A-GD65(G3) boot problems and random crashes

    Hi all,
Built a new system last week:
    i5-2500k
    MSI Z68A-GD65(G3)
    MSI 6950 2Gb TFIII
    8Gb Corsair Vengence DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel
    Corsair HX650W PSU
    Crucial RealSSD M4 128GB SSD
Posted fine on the first power-up but then hung at 'Starting Windows' just as the logo starts to fly-in.  After a lot head scratching, removal of GFX, an HD with an image of W7 on it already (exact same issue), RAM swops etc I discovered that the top pair of USB ports appear to be suspect. If any device is plugged into either of them then the system will hang at that point.  If I use the lower (non-USB 3.0) it boots just fine.
I'm also experiencing an issue in games (BF3 and DCS A-10 so far) whereby I have a random freeze. The sound will go nuts and the lights on all USB attached devices go off (which make me suspect the 2 problems are related)
Anybody able to offer any advice? Do support monitor these forums (newbie  ).

again, worth trying to disable external marvell sata3 ports
Again, Marvell SATA III controller. SATA3 is a port on the mainboard.

  • MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) Boot Loop

    Hello all,
I purchased a MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) and when I started up it goes into a boot loop. I can't see anything on the screen.
    Setup
    - Motherboard MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)
    - Intel Core i3 Ivy Bridge 3220 3.30GHz 3MB Cache LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Processor
    - Kingston ValueRAM RAM Module - (2 x 8 GB) - DDR3 SDRAM - 1600 MHz DDR3-1600/PC3-12800 - Non-ECC - Unbuffered - CL11 - 240-pin DIMM
    - COOLER MASTER Elite Power 400W OEM 20+4 pin & 4+4 pin ATX 12V V2.31 12cm fan Eco-friendly Reliability Quiet Noise Filter 70% efficiency
BIOS stated in the green labels below the "MSI" Heatsink is: E7681 IMSN10.
I tried another PSU and had the same issue.
Anybody can help me? Thank you very much for your time!

Your mainboard does not support an Ivy Bridge processor with the current bios that's why it doesn't come up. It needs a P series bios (7681vP1 and above).
There is no other way than to use any Sandy Bridge cpu to flash bios to the latest to make your cpu work: http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z68A-GD65--G3-.html#/?div=BIOS
For flashing >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
If you can't get a hand at a Sandy you need to let any PC shop or MSI do it for you (that's not for free of course). >>How to contact MSI.<<

  • Z68A-GD65-G3 boots slowly

I have this board in my computer, and I have found out, that if I have my 3D Connexion Space Navigator connected, then boot time is extremely slow.
Is there a fix for this?
    My system:
    MSI- Z68A-GD65-G3
    Intel i7 2600K
    Corsair Vengeance 16GB CL9 Kit
    Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD
    Nvidia Quadro FX-3700

The device may not be fully compatible, meaning that a BIOS upgrade may be required.
Does this slow response happen with a standard USB mouse ?
Suggest you log a ticket with MSI technical to allow them to test and provide feedback.
Which BIOS version do you currently have?
You can also contact 3DConnexion to see if there is an updated firmware available.

  • [Solved] Booting takes longer than usual

    Hi guys,
ran into a little problem here.
Hardware: Macbook 5,5 Arch on sdb which is a SDD, data stored on an HDD.
So since yesterday, the booting process takes very long for a SSD system. I don't really get any messages while booting, so i'm a little bit confused.
No USB devices connected, wired internet connection.
Here is the output from dmesg:

Sorry i don't really know how to access the boot messages? All other distros stored this information in /var/log/boot but i assume Arch doesn't :-/

  • MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3) Boot Problem

I found a beta BIOS on the MSI forum, and flashed from it. Now "UEFI:Windows Boot Manager" isn't showing under "Boot Option Priories", and as the drive was initially configured in AHCI mode and formatted with the GPT format, I need this option. It now lists my HD as a regular HD. This happened earlier, also, where I was flashing the BIOS with different versions in order to try to clear up BIOS bugs. Now I can't even boot into Windows as I just get a blinking cursor right after the BIOS screen. For some reason, the BIOS is filtering the "Windows Boot Manager" option and clearing the CMOS didn't help. I saw another post of a similar nature on here, and am wondering if there an EFI shell command to get this option back? I hope I don't have to return this board back to the vendor.
    Steps to reproduce the problem:
    1. HD set to AHCI mode
    2. Windows 7 x64 install went flawlessly
    3. Windows Boot Manager selected as option under Boot Option Priories
    4. Flash to any other version BIOS and Windows Boot Manager option completely disappears from Boot Option Priories
    5. Formatting the HD and reinstalling Windows brings back the Windows Boot Manager option

He said he laughed at MSI's response because it's wrong.
Well, there is nothing wrong at all with MSI's response:
    Quote
the issue you are experiencing has to do with the fact that the UEFI data is stored in the NVRAM which gets cleared whenever you update the bios. This so far as I was informed is not something we can change.
This is the same thing you just said:
    Quote
Pretty much, Windows writes to the firmware when you install it using GPT. If you update the BIOS, the NVRAM is cleared
So, what is there to laugh about?
    Quote
This so far as I was informed is not something we can change.
Of course MSI cannot change that by any UEFI fix, as this seems to be an UEFI design obstacle.
    Quote
but you can run a Windows emergency boot disk and issue a couple commands and get the data written back to the firmware.

    Hi ...
Checked to see how much free space there is on the startup disk lately?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
If disk space is not the issue, booting in Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.
A Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient.
Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left corner of the screen.
From the drop down menu click Restart.
See if that makes a difference ...

  • Z68A-GD65 (G3) - Motherboard's not booting with a PCI Soundblaster Audigy 2.

Hi everybody, as thread title says I've got some trouble with my motherboard, Z68A-GD65 (G3) and a Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS that a friend of mine gave to me. I gave a try in both PCI slots avaiable on the motherboard but as i place the SB in PCI slot 1 or PCI slot 2 the system do not boot up. As soon as i take it off, the system works great as usual.
Of course i disabled the onboard audio to avoid resource sharing between the two. This is the only hint i had reading around on MSI trobleshootin.
The only other parameter i can change regarding PCI is latency in the BIOS. I found to be 32 cycle by default and i did not modified it.
The Audigy works flawlessly on another Intel P45 Board from a different brand and with the same video card in the PCI-E Slot. Of course Cpu end Ram ar different. When i did the try i disconnected everything unnecessary for the boot process.
Any hint would be very appreciated.
    Thanks, Daniele.

As i read on manual, the PCI setting into the bios is not something can cause instability:
    PCI Subsystem Settings
Press <Enter> to enter the sub-menu.
    PCI Latency Timer
This item controls how long each PCI device can hold the bus before another
takes over. When set to higher values, every PCI device can conduct transactions
for a longer time and thus improve the effective PCI bandwidth. For better PCI
performance, you should set the item to higher values.

  • Z68A-GD65 (G3) fails to boot with new Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 OC

    Hi,
I have a problem with my new Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 (GV-R795WF3-3GD):
My system fails to boot with this GPU, with the old Radeon HD 4850 everything works fine.
    Here are my system specs:
    MSI Z68A-GD65 (G3)
    CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K
    RAM: 8Gb DDR3-RAM (Corsair)
power supply: be quiet! Pure Power L7 530W
What I have already tried to fix the problem:
    -CMOS Reset
    -other PCI-e slot
    -other power supply (old 750W)
    Nothing worked.
Do I need a Bios update? My current version is V23.7, but I'm not sure whether I can use the latest versions because my CPU is a SandyBridge...

We can't help you woth your vga as it is no MSI product. You can try latest bios for your board (http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z68A-GD65--G3-.html#/?div=BIOS) because the latest bios versions for G3 boards are  working well with Sandy and Ivy. If latest bios should not help and you like to downgrade the bios we can give you the needed files if you ask here.

  • Z68a-gd65 boot loop after bios update using USB

    Hi there,
My  z68a-gd65 (G3) went into a boot loop after I did a bios update from a USB key that I installed using the latest BIOS version on the MSI site 7681vP8.zip
After the system restarted, it keeps booting up for 5 seconds and then shutting down, I removed all external devices and the Geforce GTX 550 Ti card and used the onboard card, but still no change...
Is there a way to set the board to factory defaults again???
    Marcel

    Hi there,
Maybe for others to solve the same problem, I found out what was the cause of this problem, I had a USB/Firewire card installed in the PC, after removing it the BIOS update could proceed from the USB stick as planned.
After the update though, my USB/firewire card can still not be installed back into the slot, because doing so will make the boot loop appear again, very odd!
Does anyone know why this new BIOS will not work with the card that has been inside my PC for 2 years???

  • Why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

why outlook2011 mac version* takes long time to boot with OSX

Okay, so after doing all of the above, the computer still takes between 40 seconds and 1 minute or so to boot up, and the VersionCue messages still appear. However I discovered that the "kdcmond cannot retrieve..." messages disappeared after I disabled my ethernet connections. So at least I know that that had nothing to do with the extended boot-up time.
I have heard that the more RAM you have, the longer it takes to boot due to the RAM count. Since I have 10 GB, maybe this is why?
I've included the most recent Console messages below:

  • Does Mac OS X in 64 bits takes longer to boot than in 32 bits?

Hello, Does Mac OS X 10.6.3 in 64 bits mode takes longer to boot than in 32 bits mode?. If I boot Mac OS X in my MacBook Pro 5.1 in 64 bits mode it takes 51.3 sec, and if I boot it in 32 bits mode it takes 33.1 sec. I just want to know if this is normal or not. And in case this is normal I would appreciate it a lot if someone could explain me why it takes longer to boot in 64 bits mode than in 32 bits mode.
Thank you a lot for any help that you could give me

Just the opposite for me. My early 2008 Mac Pro definitely boots (and runs) faster in 64 bit mode. As Barry mentioned though, you may not want to do this.
The main rule is kernel extensions. If you have anything that needs to load on boot that is only 32 bit (mouse, keyboard, scanner or other type of driver/software), then you must boot in 32 bit mode or they won't load.
As long as all of your boot software is 64 bit compatible, then booting 64 bit is fine. 32 bit software you launch after the OS is up and running will still run as 32 bit with the OS in 64 bit mode.

  • New I7 quad-core takes longer to boot up than old imac?

Just got my new I7 quad-core last night. (Looks gorgeous, by the way.) Transferred everything over from my old 24" 2.33GHz iMac.... all is well, only had one app hiccup so far (had to reinstall iTunes for some reason).
Anyway, did a side-by-side startup this morning, and the old iMac basically kicked the new one's butt - it started up about 50% faster.
Does this seem right? Is there a reason the new iMac, running basically the same exact system with same apps, preferences, etc, would take longer to boot up?

i think the new one was rebooting from a bootable backup i had created. changed that in startup disc settings... seems faster rebooting now.
and i transferred everything over via migration assistant (allowed it to move everything upon my first startup when it asked if i wanted to transfer data from another mac)....

  • LEOPARD SEEMS TO TAKE LONG TO BOOT UP???

I am new to MacIntosh. I was a former PC user that converted to a MacIntosh iMac 24" Screen. When I purchased the iMac, it came with Tiger OS. I recently purchased Leopard from Apple On-Line and I installed Leopard but it seems to take longer to boot up than Tiger did. Is that normal or did I do something wrong installing Leopard? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    relaxed

I've noticed the longer boot times as well. I first upgraded from Tiger and then bought a brand new hard drive and did a clean install. Both drives have a boot time about twice as long as Tiger did (40 seconds compared to 20 seconds).
I don't think you did anything wrong but it never hurts to run the disk repair options available to you. Rest assured that there have been many posts and mentions of the longer boot time and that it seems to be normal even with the .5.2 updates.
I guess there's nothing to worry about except being more relaxed for the 40 seconds? You can also just put the computer to sleep as opposed to shutting it off. Apple does a much better of 'hibernating' than MS did with Windows. But, from my own non-scientific experience, riding on a bus or car with hibernating Mac notebook could do something to the hard drive which I'd only had for 3 months. Mine died not too long after I started taking the rough-riding bus to work and had it in sleep mode. Don't know if there's a correlation, but there could be so I'm just throwing it out there.
    Hope some of this helps!
