Z68A-GD80 DVI Port Woes

I've been having problems (like many others) getting the on board DVI port to work. I've done some testing and here is what I've found.
My monitor is an ASUS VE247H.
A direct connection between the DVI port of the mainboard and my monitor results in no output. Monitor gives a "no signal" message. A single link or dual link DVI cable yields the same result. There is no difference between the two.
A DVI to HDMI adapter connected to the HDMI input of the monitor works.
A DVI to VGA adapter connected to the VGA input of the monitor works.
An HDMI to HDMI connection from mainboard to monitor also works.
Monitor worked with my previous PC connected via DVI. Monitor also works with Z68A-GD80 and a discrete card connected via DVI. That should rule out the monitor being the issue.
At this point I figured the DVI port was just faulty. I have already received a call from MSI, after discussing my DVI problems in a Newegg review, and was instructed to RMA the board back to Newegg for a replacement. Before taking everything apart, I decided to try the only other "monitor" available to me with a DVI input, my Samsung DLP TV (model#HLP4663WX/XAA). So I directly connected the mainboard to the TV (DVI to DVI), with a single link DVI cable and amazingly, that worked.
This leads me to believe there is definitely some issue with the way the BIOS handles communication to/from the monitor, and not just a faulty DVI socket.
Another observation I've made, the same monitor is detected differently depending on what interface is being used. For instance, when I connect via HDMI, the Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel shows my display as "Digital Television VE247".
If I connect with VGA, the display shows up as "Monitor VE247".
Hopefully this is of some use to MSI. We really need these port issues fixed.

Yes, I tried every connection I could to the monitor. Straight HDMI from board to display worked. Using the DVI port on the board and some adapters, DVI -> HDMI (worked), DVI -> VGA (worked), DVI -> DVI (doesn't work).
And FYI, in DVI-D, the "D" is for DIGITAL not dual. The mainboard has a DVI-I port, the "I" meaning integrated. It supports both digital (DVI) and analog (VGA) connections from the same port.

AFAIK, the monitor is HDMI v1.3 compliant, the cable I'm using definitely is. I have no problems with an HDMI connection though. Either straight HDMI from board to monitor, or DVI port on board -> DVI to HDMI adapter -> HDMI cable to monitor. I've contacted support with my results thus far and linked them to this thread as well. Their reply "Ok, thank you for the update. I will look further into this and update you as further information becomes available."
I've RMA'd the board back to newegg for a replacement and will repeat this process when I get it back (probably another week). I even went as far as to try one of the beta BIOSes before RMAing, no improvement there.

    Hallo everyone, please give me a little help here, I have a Z68A-GD80 (G3) MB and I connected a hard drive er 2 or 5 how and sata port 1 -> 6 is running 100% ok but port 7 doesn't show and I have a drive connected also if I connect a external drive to the Esata port it doesn't show. I installed the marvell 88SE9128 drivers bit no sata controller shows. I have the intel side set to raid mode because I have striped volume with ssd enhanced acceleration option on it does this make a difference to the marvell side ? how do I get the marvell port 7 and esata to show and work ? 

    Sometimes the Drive Letter for the device your trying to plug in is trying to use the same letter of another drive currently in use for example D: drive or F: drive etc  if you goto the drive management see if your drive shows up there and if it shows an error you can right click the drive letter or Volume and allocate(change) the letter to one that is not in use. maybe this will work i had similar issue with an previous computer, and as Always if you do not know what you are doing then dont do it , i am not responsible for any mistakes that you may cause. Hope this helps if your comfortable doing so!

    1.   Click the Windows Start Orb and then Right-Click Computer and Click Manage from the context menu.
    access the device manager from windows 7 start menu
    2.   Click Storage > Disk Management from the left panel.  Next Right-Click the drive letter that you would like to change and Click Change Drive Letter and Paths…
    use the disk management feature to enter the change drive letter dialog in windows 7
    3.   Select the drive letter you would like to change then Click Change.  In the pop-up dialog use the drop-down box to Select a new drive letter.  Click OK to save and exit both windows.
    assign a new drive letter to your windows 7 hard disk
    Now your drive should have the new letter you just assigned to it.

  • MSI Z68A-GD80-G3 sata port 7 marvell controlled not showing in BIOS

    My spec is..Antec 1200 case.  MSI Z68A-GD80-G3 board .  i7 -2700K @4.1 GHZ.  GTX 580 OC twin FrozR II 1536 Mb Graphics.Corsair Vengeance 16 GB PC3-12800C9 1600MHz RAM.  Cooler Master Hyper 212+ CPU  cooler.  Crucial  SSD M4 128 GB SATA 6Gb/s main Hard drive.Crucial  SSD M4  128GB hard drive. 500 GB HDD. Crucial SSD M4 60GB.1200W PSU.
    My 3rd  60 GB SSD drive had to be plugged in sata 7..I reformatted It in windows and it is working. It does still not show up on BIOS.
    I could not find my install disc. I couldnt find any marvell drivers in the download section for my board?
    Has windows found them? why no show in BIOS?

    I may have found correct drivers now SATA 7 drive is showing up. seems to be running . my ssds running off SATA 1 and 2 are getting a AS SSD bench mark score of 710 and 780. The SATA 7 one is  scoring at 340 so it  is not working like the first x2 SDD's.

  • PCIE 3.0 test with MSI Z68A-GD80 G3 :)

    The Z68A-GD80 G3 is MSI’s first motherboard with PCIE 3.0 connectivity. Currently there are no PCIE 3 devices available yet but later on we can test its performance by using a PCIE SSD. Aside from this, the board has also a new UEFI Bios named “Click Bios II” which for me is way better than the previous version. 
    Before we take a closer look on the board, let’s check out the package first.
    Box design is a bit the same as the GD80 B3 version before.  Once you open it up, all main features of the said board are enumerated
    Extreme Power Design, Military Class II Components (SFC, Hi-C Caps, Multi Bios), 3 PCIEx16 Slots, Super Charger and OC Genie II
    For the bundled accessories, you have the same old story – Manual, Software Disc, four SATA cables, two Molex to SATA power connectors & SLI Bridge. Then for some extras - PCI USB 3.0 two ports bracket, guide headers for faster and easy connectivity and lastly voltage check points.
    Next, the “Mainboard”.  By physically looking at it and by comparing it side by side against the Z68A-GD80 B3 motherboard. You won’t find any difference except for the PCIE X16 locks. It has also the same black and blue color theme, two vrm heatsinks connected by a flat heatpipe and  V-Check points.
    Moving closer to the board you have 8 Power Pins to power up the processor, 2 PCI slots, 2 PCIE x1 slots for devices such as TV Tuners or Audio Cards. 2 PCIE Gen3 & 1 PCIE Gen2  x16 Slots. With one VC connected at the top most slot, speed will be @ x16. If both top and middle are used, it will be @ x8/x8. Lastly, by using the 3rd PCIEx16 Gen2 slot. You have x8/x8/x4. It would also disable certain onboard devices such as eSATA Port, Sata 7, one onboard front USB 3.0, two PCI Slots and firewire. So if possible avoid using the last VC slot. 
    At the top most PCIE x1 area. You will find a 6-pin power connector. This will provide more juice/power for multi-GPU setups.
    Next, at the bottom part of the board. You have the Easy Buttons (Power and Reset) and the popular one button “OC Genie”. The red colored USB header is for the Super Charger while the blue is a regular USB 3.0.  For the SATA Connectors  you have a total of 7. 4 regular SATA 3GB/s, 2 SATA 6GB/s controlled by Intel chipset and another SATA 6GB/s by Marvell.
    Wrapping things up, we have now the IO terminal ports. Starting from the left we have combo PS2 port and SPDIF Optical Out. Clear CMOS Button, e-SATA port running under Marvell, 2 USB 2.0 and Firewire ports controlled by Via. Moving across, 2 Gigabit Lan by Realtek 8111E, 2 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 run under NEC D720200 controller. Next, we have DVI and HDMI output connections and 6 analog audio ports by Realtek ALC892.
    Once you are into the bios, you will find the new and improved Click Bios. Nice and professional looking, faster navigation and easier to use.
    To test the performance of the new PCIE Gen3 technology, we will be using this Photofast PCIE SSD device http://www.photofast.tw/comboproducts.asp?pid=1.
    We will be connecting the PCIE SSD device on the GD80’s Gen3 and Gen2 slots and compare the results using the disk benchmark software ATTO.  I ran the benchmark 9 times for the two set of tests.
    System Configuration as follows:
    Processor:  Intel Core i7 2600K at default stock speed
    Memory: Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    SSD: OCZ Vertex 2
    Motherboard: MSI Z68A-GD80 G3
    Softwares: CPU-Z 1.58, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit with SP1, Latest Atto Software 1.47 I think.

    Did you have your previous board's BIOS set to AHCI or IDE ? You need to set this BIOS the same.
    Firstly only insert one RAM module in the slot closest to the CPU. Remove the rest. Then do full CMOS clear >>Clear CMOS Guide<<  also remove the MB battery.
    What BIOS do you currently have ? The initial BIOS releases were plagued by CPU throttling which have been fixed in the cyrrent beta BIOS releases.

  • Z68A-GD80(G3) Can no longer read external hd dock after flashing beta bios

    I flashed E7672IMS.J31 Beta Bios because I was on a very old bios that was not compatible with my GTX 970 card I just bought.  Flashing the bios fixed my 970 compatibility but in the process made it so my 2 external hd docks no longer worked (at this time on windows 7).  self powered usb harddrives still worked though.  At this time my sata mode was IDE which I thought might have had to do with it since it doesnt have hotswap. I assumed it was an issue with some drivers I installed after flashing the beta bios and I was due for upgrading/reformatting anyways so I enabled AHCI and hot swap then did a clean install of windows 8.1.  The external hard drives still don't read!!   I've used multiple different hard drives and different usb ports including usb 2.0.  The docks are usb 3.0 and I use them daily to edit photos from my work.  Any ideas of things I could try?

    intel 2500k
    16gb Corsair vengeance ram
    MSI 970 GTX GPU
    Corsair 750w power supply
    Z68A-GD80(G3) motherboard
    E7672IMS.J31 Beta Bios

    Could the issue be that I didn't download the Intel Management Driver after installing the beta bios I flashed?  Maybe I could try that first, which one from this list do I use with my pc setup?

  • Z68A-GD80 use both PCIEX1 slots same time?

    Hi- can't find answer to this using the search, so:
    On a Z68A-GD80 motherboard, I am trying to use a PCI SATA3 card in PCIEX1_1 and PCIEX1_2 at the same time to add 4 extra SATA3 ports, but if both cards are in, only the top one is recognized. If the second one is in alone, both drives attached to that are recognized, but I cannot use all 4 extra ports at teh same time. Is there any way round this, or is this some limitation of PCI implementation?

    Ok. Need a little clarification here. To end any confusion about SATA 6Gb/s, SATA III, SATA 6.0 being confused with SATA3 which is the mainboards #3 Intel SATA II controlled port.
    Is this mainboard the Z68 'B3' or 'G3'?

    A PCI card can't be used in a PCI-E slot.

  • Z68A-GD80 with SandyBridge 2600K with latest MSI Bios flashed dead?

    I am desparate because I flashed my Z68A-GD80 G3 with the latest firmware 7672vJ2.zip from the MSI website. The update was fine and it completed 100%. However after the final reboot the screens stayed black and also the initial beeping for the usb ports was missing. The blue led was constant and the red led was blinking constantly. I opened my computer and did the JBAT1 reset but no luck. Then I tried to clear CMOS via the reset button on the backpanel. However no luck there as well. I did unplug the graphic card and the pci-e revodrive 3 and tried to boot in a minimal configuration. the screens stayed black.
    I don't know what else to try. At the moment I am super desperate and I am looking for help. Any hints are highly appreciated!

    The BIOS has failed. The only way to recover it is to enable the multi BIOS update. I am not sure if your board has a hard switch for a multi BIOS update or not. If not, then you obviously cannot enable it in the BIOS as you are unable to enter the BIOS. In that case the BIOS chip has to be reprogrammed via a SPI programmer or the board will have to be sent to MSI to get reflashed.
    There is an outside chance that fitting an Ivy CPU may just allow you to get into the BIOS, but I am not convinced as the flashing blue light normally indicates a failed BIOS.
    Remove the battery one more time and do another CMOS clear. Leave the battery out for around 30 mins. Then give it one more try.
    Hope you have a helpful PC shop in your area that may be able to assist with a SPI programmer if needed.

  • Bad MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3)? Diagnostic available?

    I have an i7-2600K installed on a MSI Z68A-GD80 (B3) board that quit booting Windows 7 the other day. The boot would proceed to the point where the four color swatches start swirling around to make the MS flag and then the screen freezes and nothing more happens.  The system will boot Memtest86+ v4.2 and that reports no memory problems after running for many hours/passes.  I have stripped the system of everything but one 4Gb stick of memory, the SATA DVD drive and a new/blank/different HDD than was present when the problem started. The video card has been removed and I'm now using on-board video. The lasted available version of the BIOS was flashed and both the default BIOS settings and also a BIOS configuration with most hardware disabled have been tried. Different SATA ports have been tried as well as SATA and IDE modes. Still the behavior does not change.
    I've created both 32 & 64 bit Ubuntu boot CDs and both will start to boot but hang. A "FalconFour’s Ultimate Boot CD" will boot and display a menu but both the miniXP and mini Linux environments hang when I try to start them. Windows 7 & Windows XP installation disks hang after a minute or two of starting up.
    I do not have a compatible second CPU or motherboard to swap into the system to check if that helps.
    So far I have only found versions of the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool that run under Windows.
    Is there a stand-alone version of it (or something similar) or one that will run under DOS available?
    Are there other troubleshooting steps I should be trying?

    The system started with more but this is what's left after weeding out the parts that did not impact the problem.
    FWIW either the HDD or the DVD drive could go too because the problem occurs if I try to boot from either with the other removed.

  • MSI Z68A-GD80 Freezes up @ 'Starting Windows' screen.

    MSI Z68A-GD80 (oc genie off, with corsair h60 cpu cooler, around 46 degrees celcius, as it reads in the bios. reset the cmos many times, tried a different cmos battery, also flashed to the newest BIOS version. )
    8GB DDR3 g.Skill turbulence 2200mhz RAM (tried with 1 stick in DIMM 1 slot @1333 @1.6v, ect)
    GTX480 x 2 (tried with and without a video card, tried on board via dvi, same result)
    i7 2600k default values across the board
    OCZ MX 1250W PSU
    Tried with no HDD even, when installing windows, would get to the Starting Windows screen and freeze, or give me a BSOD: IRQL IS NOT LESS OR EQUAL TO
    But I have also tried with hard drives, 120gb revodrive, 64gb ssd from corsair, and 640gb 6gb/s from western digital.
    Everything I have tested on a different system working, including the processor. Am I missing something? The RAM might not be compatible? I unfortulately do not have another stick to test on the mobo.
    Edit: Also, tried with both 32 bit and 64 bit w7 disks.

    When you install Windows on an old drive , it will look at the existing OS on it ,to  know if you can upgrade,  if the install detect an install who was made on ACHI ( a ssd as example) and your BIOS is set to IDE, I wonder if it will not create the problem you have as the install thing you are on ACHI when you are not.
    I tried it with no hard drive at all. Booted from disk, and before the installation got to the point where it needed a hard drive, it froze up on the 'Starting Windows' screen after loading windows setup files.

  • Z68A-GD80 (G3) Networking/LAN Issue

    Have been having this problem since I purchased the board. Essentially, I installed all the hardware and went to install the operating system. Worked fine for the first time. After about the fourth start up, the operating system did not even recognize the LAN/Gigabit networking controllers. This is not a huge problem as I had an extra networking card, but its annoying if you want to use SLI/Crossfire due to the network card blocking a video card fan exhaust. Tried to reinstall the operating system, but this did not fix the issue and the OS did not recognize the LAN ports from the very beginning of the install.
    One solution I have found is to completely turn off all power and remove the RAM to have a full mobo reset. Unfortunately, this will clear all my overclocking preferences and the disappearing LAN ports will still happen from time to time.
    My question is have other people had this problem of the disappearing network controllers with the Z68A-GD80? Is there an easier solution then RMA'ing the board entirely?

    Does 'Network Adapter' show up in Device Manger? So far, this has not been experienced on the GD80(G3) here, but a GD80(B3) never even had the LAN port LED's lite up. Just a guess, but believe it to be a possible Z68 chipset problem. If planning on keeping the system for a long time, it may be best to RMA it now for a fully functional mainboard.

    This newbie around here has a problem:
    The following system freezes randomly without warning:
    MB:    MSI Z68A-GD80(B3)
    CPU:    2600K
    Cooling: Corsair H60 (temps idle mid 20's, under load <60C)
    IGP:     Integrated, using DVI
    RAM:   Corsair vengeance 1600 , 4x4 16GB (9-9-9-27)
    HD:     Corsair M4 SSD 256 GB
    OS:     Win7 x64
    PSU:    Chieftec, 80+, 650W modular
    No other components/peripherals installed/attached
    When BIOS /UEFI is set to all defaults: system will run normally with no freezes, as soon as I hit the OC genie button, the system starts up normally into windows, but will suddenly freeze at any given time under full load but also under idle.
    I've read all relevant threads about this "behavior" and I know I'm not alone, but after really trying every conceivable idea as suggested by many knowledgeable persons on this forum I'm completely stuck.
    Things tried so far:
    Manual adjustments in UEFI withou using OC genie button
    Use one ram stick in slot one, (incl running at default 1333Mhz)
    Use various Dram voltages (default 1.5 V and tried all possibilities up till 1,65 Volt)
    Use various Vcore voltages till 1,45 Volts
    Between all those various scenarios CMOS has been reset and cleared
    Does any of you have any suggestions of where to proceed from here in order to get a stable OC'ed system?

    There are two things to consider.
    1. The individual CPU speciman you have may just be one that does not allow much in terms of overclocking. This is the part that is the hardest to accept but the fact is that testing has provided the following results.

    1. Approximately 50% of CPUs can go up to 4.4~4.5 GHz
    2. Approximately 40% of CPUs can go up to 4.6~4.7 GHz
    3. Approximately 10% of CPUs can go up to 4.8~5 GHz (50+ multipliers are about 2% of this group)
    So the luck of the draw is always present, unfortunately 
    2. You are using the IGP. This will affect the overclockability of the CPU to some extent. By how much, I don't know, but on my 1156 socket i3 it had quite a large effect. If you know someone with a low end GPU that you can test with, then disable your IGP and retest to see if the results are any different.
    A couple of things to check. What BIOS version do you have, and if there are any later BIOS' that address this ?
    Reseat your CPU, inspect the CPU pad indentations at the the same time and check for any bent pins on the socket or any foreign matter in between the pins.
    Recheck all your power connectors, especially the CPU power connector for proper seating.

    I'm assuming this is not possible using apples mini DVI port, but just wanted to check to make sure. My main goal is to get surround sound out of my powerbook. To do this by simply adding a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter would be GREAT!

    Yup, no audio, unfortunately. The audio will have to transmitted separately via the analog audio output.

  • Mini-DVI port not working: wear and tear?

    I had been happily using the mini-DVI port to play content on TV, using a DVI to Video adapter : plugging and unplugging probably twice a week.
    Now it seems to have stopped, abruptly: no signal at all is reaching the TV. (Adapter still works fine on my MacBook.)
    What are the chances of wear and tear damaging the DVI port? Is this a complicated fix? Any other thoughts? No recent upgrades or updates.
    "About this Mac" reckons it's mirroring fine, so it feels like a hardware thing. Many thanks in advance.

    It is very possible that the DVI port on the iMac has been damaged from wear and tear, as it's harder to get at than the MacBook.
    I would disconnect everything from the iMac, grab a clean towel and turn it face down on the desk. Then with a magnifying glass and light inspect the DVI port for a broken or bent pin. In the process of inspecting the port your SMC will also be reset, follow the instruction for "How to reset the System Management Controller" when your done.
    If the port seems OK and the SMC reset doesn't get it going use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Premissions and try it again.
    Your local Apple Store or local Apple Service Provider can replace a bad or damaged DVI port.

    I doubt this is possible, but just in case : is it possible to force boot screens to a different port on the video card?
    The MSI GTX780 has two DVI ports - one DVI-I (which includes analog display) and DVI-D (which does not). The DVI-I port displays the boot screen, BIOS, and anything that shows before Windows is fully loaded.
    I currently have two monitors. My primary monitor can connect via DVI, and since it is a 120HZ monitor, it currently uses a dual link cable. The secondary monitor is older and cannot connect via DVI, so I use a DVI-I-to-VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable for that display. Unfortunately, this means that the secondary monitor shows boot/BIOS/etc.
    Is it possible to move the boot display to the DVI-D port on the card?
    Please note that this is not a big issue - having the secondary monitor show boot info is a minor annoyance at worst. The secondary monitor also has HDMI-in, so I can buy a cable and use that, and then move the primary monitor to the DVI-I port. I do want to avoid spending more money, but mostly, I want to see if it is possible to force the boot screens to another port. This seems like it might be a very interesting way to learn about the video card (and VBIOS, if changing that is necessary to do this).

  • MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) "B2" error with ned gtx 970

    Hey.
    Hardware info:
    MSI z68A-GD80 (g3) - Bios version. V18.8
    Intel i5 2500k
    4x4GB kingston hyperX 1600mhz
    MSI 970 gaming g4
    PSU : Seasonic SS-500GB
    My problem is that when I'm trying to install the new GPU i get the error "b2" when i boot. If i chance back to my old gpu (560 ti) or the gpu on the CPU there is no problem. Also i have tested the gtx 970 in another PC and it works.
    After some reseach i found out that i need a bios update. I have tried this but with no luck, cant upgrade bios. I have use "MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing" tools with bios from MSI hp (I choose the (g3) bios) . I can get the bios on the USP stick but when I'm trying to install the new bios i got the error "Bios corruption detected !!" and stopped. I don't know what to do now, i hope that you can help me

    I had the exact same problem as the original poster - same motherboard, same old graphics card (560ti) and same new graphics card (970 gaming) and got the same B2 error code and the PC not going beyond that.
    I flashed the bios and that fixed the problem - the exact version I used was on this page:
    Ok, this forum isn't allowing me to post a link to it, but just go to the official page for the motherboard on MSI's website - then click on Support and Service Location, which should open up the list of BIOS upgrades...
    The top one as of writing this is version 19.2
    To do the flashing of the BIOS  you must load the downloaded exe file onto a flash drive and run it from there. Don't worry if it seems like your PC is hanging, it just takes a while (while still in Windows). It then reboots and will finish up flashing the BIOS (you'll see a red bar with the warning on a black background with white text).
    After doing that, my GTX970 GAMING works like an absolute charm! I can now finally enjoy Minecraft like it was meant to be played haha (kidding, I played GTA 5 the whole weekend with EVERYTHING to the absolute MAX!)
