Z77A-G43 issue with SATA drive

This is wierd
I have 4 Hitachi drives all of 1TB, perfectly working on old PC.
Today have decided to transfer them into new PC:
MB: Z77A-G43
BIOS: 1.20
CPU: Intel g2020
Primary drive is Intel SSD 120G series 330
I have attached 3 HITACHI drives successfully, they are all working fine.
but particular one forces MB to reboot before BIOS screen, last code seen on screen is A2?
Then I have decided to put dedicated controller 1st I took SilImage 3512 SATA/RAID Controller
- no changes computer reboots before post screen
After I took VIA VT6421 SATA/RAID Controller
- no changes computer reboots before post screen
searched web, found nothing useful.
any ideas what might causing this?
EDIT: tested controller SiI3512 on old PC and trouble HDD, everything works just fine :/
read AMIBIOS codes:
0xA0 IDE initialization is started
0xA1 IDE Reset
0xA2 IDE Detect
0xA3 IDE Enable
0xA4 SCSI initialization is started
0xA5 SCSI Reset
0xA6 SCSI Detect
0xA7 SCSI Enable
0xA8 Setup Verifying Password
A2 is ide ? what ide ? I give up.
it seams to me that this board is broken in several ways
- non working DVI
- faulting with valid SATA drive
what else awaits me on this road

using IDE previously and now AHCI might trouble Windows but system would none the less post. At least you should get past IDE detection but hanging at A2 means it doesn't.
I'm wondering about your statement you had been using SilImage 3512 SATA/RAID Controller and VIA VT6421 SATA/RAID Controller. Are these PCI add-on cards? Did you try all SATA ports controlled by the Z77 chipset. Are the drives used are all identical? Is the issue only happening with one particular drive or anytime you attach a fourth hdd no matter which one it is?
About the performance difference from AHCI to IDE the differences are minimal. Should be almost irrelevant for the hdds.
My discoveries:
Using sata mode IDE with windows installed in AHCI mode == windows hangs during loading (BSOD), probably missing drivers or similar.
Also I am unsure what A2 code means but I have noticed it is displayed while bios post screen shows up with the list of installed drives during normal boot.
And is also last code I see when I attach problematic drive resulting in reboot loop.
To be honest I haven't tried all SATA ports on board for sure I haven't tried SATA 1 (1st white) as there is my SSD drive.
But I have tried almost all other ports. I can try them all, but I don't think this will solve the problem.
I don't think problem is in what slot I put my drive, since same behavior is with SATA/RAID controllers.
And whit this SATA/RAID controllers this drive is working perfectly normal on other PC.
No not all drives are identical but I have exactly same drive as this one, and all drives are hitachi:
* HDT721010KLA330 working fine
* HDS721010SLA360 working fine
* HDS721010CLA332 (1) working fine
* HDS721010CLA332 (2) problematic drive == reboot loop (when its single drive or with others).
True I haven't tried to detach Intel SSD and leave problematic drive as only drive in system, I may try this tomorrow)
funny part is that HDS721010CLA332 (2) is working fine when I hot plug it.
Checked firmware version on both drives, and both drives have identical firmwares.
Only difference I know off is that working drive has 1 partition, and problematic drive has 2 partitions.
EDIT: forgot to say it passed SMART test, everything was green (hitachi sw), while hdd sentinel reported 1 bad sector but saying estimated drive working days > 900 days and degree was 98% I am guessing because of that 1 bad sector and too many working days (years) behind him.

  • MSI K8T Neo2 issue with SATA drives....

I have a K8T Neo2 motherboard, with a 3700+ San Diego core, running Windows XP Service Pack 2. I don't have the version with the Promise SATA Raid - using the VIA SATA RAID. I am using the latest BIOS (according to the Live Monitor).
The machine was set up (the OS installed) on an IDE 40 gig drive. All was fine, but I noticed that my machine lagged at times (mostly games, under heavy disk load) so I decided to get a couple of Seagate 250 gig drives (they have NCQ, which I know is not supported by this MB, but they were on sale, and I'd read that the drive should still work ok).
I attached the drives, and enabled SATA in the bios. The machine boots fine. I created a single 500 gig striped array using the two new drives. Windows XP sees the array fine, but that I have to initialize it.
Every time I initialize it I get an error that says, "An error has occured" and tells me to check the event log (nothing there), and to either restart the Disk Manager or reboot my computer. The OS actually locks up a few times when I'm doing this (the mouse-cursor freezes).
I've tried using the disks as two single disks, same error (and it reported that they were only 137 gig each, though apparently it's a registry issue, and I used a util to change that setting, but I haven't tested to see if it changed anything.).
I got the latest VIA SATA drives from the MSI site, and installed them (though honestly, WindowsXP saw the card and the drives just fine). One weird thing is that the VIA SATA RAID is listed under SCSI devices in the Device Manager - there is no SATA category in there.
I'm at a loss here. I've searched the web, and this forum, without luck.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
*Edit* I just unplugged two IDE disk drives from the computer, and when I started it up again, it found a Promise SATA Raid controller. I thought that wasn't included with the basic version of the board?
    David.

Ok - thanks - I read through the stickies and updated my bios tonight to 9.20 (the latest).
Had some dry-mouth moments when WindowsXP decided to "discover" every piece of hardware I had, right down to the mouse, and again when core-center rebooted my computer.
Also, there was some time where my memory (OCZ 2-3-3-6 DDR3200) was being set to CAS2.5, which was kind of weird, but it fixed itself.
Unfort, I am unable to increase my FSB/HTT speed past about 205 before my computer does a reboot.
I have an ATI video card (X800 Plat Ed), and I'd read that some other people had issues with ATI card and the AGP-lock, so I got the CG-ICS950405 clock-gen, and it does state that my AGP is running at 66 (and PCI 33).
Going to bump up my settings via clockgen as soon as I post this (want to post before it potentially crashes).
Should I roll back to the 9.10 bios? Not a lot of discussion on the 9.2, and I'm wondering if it causes some issues.
Thanks again for all the help and info. I used to have a firm grasp on all the components of a system, way back in the P3 days, but things have changed quite a bit...
    **EDIT**
Seems to be a Core-Center issue. Used ClockGen to o/c to 2600, with temp nice and low. Will run like this for a bit. Does Core-Center work with a 9.X bios?
I think all my problems are solved - copied a wack of files to my SATA drives, and there were no issues. I won't trust Live Monitor again for drivers or bios - it's still stuck way back at 3.30.
I'll pass the info I've learned off whenever I can.
    Comments and criticisms welcome.
    David.

I looked at the motherboard page - they recommend 3.30 unless you have having issues (which I kind of guess I am). Funny that Live Monitor won't pick up those BIOS changes - wonder what else I'm missing.
So 9.1 fixes the AGP/HTT overclocking issue?
The stickies are great - thanks.
    David.

  • How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??

How many IDE drives & CDrom can be installed with SATA drives??
i have 2 IDE hard disks & 2 CDROM drives: can install SATA hard disk added to these drives or do i have to remove some???
& if it can be added, can i install 2 SATA drives???
    THX in advance

The 3 versions of this board that are available are:
    875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0)
    875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)
All of these boards will have the following ports provider by the chipsets ICH5R south bridge.
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
    2 x PATA (Supporting 4 IDE devices)
All 6 of these can be used at the same time (provided you are using win XP or 2K) you just need to make sure yor BIOS is set right.
    ->INTEGRATED PERIPHERALS
    ->ON-CHIP IDE CONFIG
ATA CONFIG: S-ATA ONLY or P-ATA ONLY
    S-ATA/P-ATA KEEP ENABLED: YES
    OPERATE MODE:
If you set to "legacy mode" S-ATA are set to channel 1 and 2 and P-ATA to channel 3 and 4. If you set to "native mode" P-ATA are channel 1 and 2 and S-ATA 3 and 4. You can only use the raid functionfon SATA in native mode.
If you have the 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0) you will also have the following ports provided by the Promise PDC20378 PCI controller:
2 x SATA (Supporting 2 SATA HDD drives)
1 x PATA (Supporting 1 Master IDE HDD drive)
The PATA port is limited to 1 Master HDD by the lite BIOS. This can in theory be upgraded to the full BIOS supporting a master and a slave, but this may obviously void your warranty.
So the answer to your origional question is:
    2 x SATA HDDs and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FISR (PCB 2.0) or 875P Neo-LSR (PCB 1.0)
    or
    4 x SATA HDDs, 1 x IDE HDD (2 if you modify the BIOS) and 4 x IDE HDD/CDROM if you have 875P Neo-FIS2R (PCB 1.0)

  • Install issue with CD drives / and burning

I am running Windows Vista 64 on a new computer I built (latest ASUS P5K-E with a quad Q6600 cpu and 4gigs of RAM). I transferred all my music and installed iTunes. Everything is working fine except for the burning of disks. It did give me a prompt at the end of the iTunes install and on first startup that there may be a problem recognizing the CD drives. However, there is no problem importing music on those CD/DVD burner drives -- but I cannot burn on those drivers. I can burn using other software on these drives -- no issues with the drives at all. Under iTunes "Preferences", and 'Burning' it states "No supported Disk burners found". Both are Lite-on CD/DVD burner drives and less than a year old -- and of course worked on the old XP computer with iTunes. I have uninstalled, reinstalled iTunes -- no luck. Any ideas? This looks to be something in the Registry on install, but not sure what to do. Any help appreciated.

You may need the CD Configuration folder too, after you install the drivers.
Here is the CD Configuration folder, with the Files you need Just Unzip it and place the CD Configuration Folder into Your C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes Directory

I had my friend with Windows Vista x86 Install iTunes and give me the Folder and Files I needed.
    Hope this helps you

  • USB issues with External Drive

I am running a 1 TB Fantom drive (MDC1000) (2 Partitions) on new OS 10.5.6 MacPro via one of the back USB ports. Been using the drive for over a year with no problems.
Now intermittent issue with mounting drive. After successfully mounting and letting the drive cycle down, the USB2 connection disconnects when the drive starts back up again. I receive the Device Removal Message, then the drive tries to remount. Then I receive the message again. What is strange is that the drive seems to work fine when data is being accessed consistently.
I clicked off the "put the hard disc to sleep" checkbox in the Energy Saver preference which seemed to stabilize the intermittent problem, but now there is an issue with the machine not coming out of sleep, and I get the startup clock icon when I try to restart. The machine does not shut down with the USB connected.
I'm still trying to determine if it's the drive or the machine. I ran the disc utility and repaired the disc as the intermittent disconnections seem to corrupt the trees and directories. I am able to fix them. Is there any utility for testing the USB ports? There should BE.
Could this be due to a recent update? Or lack of firmware update from the drive manufacturer? Seemed to come out of nowhere.
    Thanks for any info.

Just to follow up with this for anyone has a similar problem.
Tried new cables and seemed better for a short time, but then still would not mount successfully.
I called Micronet after I didn't hear back via their email form. The tech there seemed to suspect it was the power connection on the network card in the drive which would make some sense. He confirmed there were no firmware upgrades for the Fantom drive.
Also tried to mount the drive unsuccessfully via Firewire and it did not work.
So my conclusion is that it's not the drive mechanism but the network card in the drive. I have a sinking suspicion that there is a power issue in my office space, which may have affected the drive. I've had other machines and devices which have had power issues in the past.
Does anyone know any simple and easy way to test electrical integrity in a work/office environment?
I bought another 2tb drive, transferred the data and reformatted the old drive to see if that does anything.

  • IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?

My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
    1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
    2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
    - blowing dust out of the back with canned air
    - checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
    - fixing permissions from normal boot
    - boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
    - fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
    - getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
    - clearing PRAM
    - resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
    - Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
    - virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)

Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
    iStat currently shows:
    HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
    ==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

  • Z77A-GD65 issues with Geforce GTX 780 Video Card

    Hey Guys,
I have a issue with a new PC build.
I think it may be a driver or BIOS setting issue, I hope
I bought a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard and below are the specs:
    - Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.4 Ghz
    - BIOS Version E4451IMS V10.8
    - Balistix Sport 8GB sticks (Total of 24 GB memory installed)
    - Kentek 875w power supply
    - Geforce GTX 780 Graphics Card
My problem is with the Geforce GTX 780 video card, I installed a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit and
everything runs and works fine, but when i install the Geforce GTX 780 video card and install the
drivers its all good up to this point but when i restart the computer i get this message in the device
manager ""Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (code 43)"
I have installed different versions of the driver, a few older and few newer versions with the same
    outcome.
I tried to flash the BIOS to the latest version 10.11 but had problems with it picking up my harddrive
after it flashed successfully. I even checked the boot up setting and it all looked good just would not
boot up, so i had to revert back to the v10.8 BIOS version for it to work.
I'm not sure if there is a setting in the BIOS that i need to turn on or off. I'm not familar with this BIOS,
is there a place in it so i can see if the BIOS is picking up the video card, it has to or Windows would
    not see it right?
I'm stumped here, do you guys know of a Geforce driver version that works well with this video card?
I truely think the card is fine because when i install the card to the motherboard i dont get any weird
issues until the driver is installed and Windows is restarted.
I would greatly appreciate any help and advise that you guys can give me.
    Thanks alot

    UPDATE
Well i wanted to post an update on my new build issue.
    Here are my specs:
    I bought a MSI Z77A-GD65 motherboard with BIOS v10.8
    - Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.4 Ghz
    - BIOS Version E4451IMS V10.8 (i had a issue with the newest BIOS flash v10.11 it wouldn't detect the harddrive, could figure that one out so i went back to v10.8)
    - Balistix Sport 8GB sticks (Total of 32 GB memory installed) I first had 3 sticks so i got another 8GB stick to fill all 4 banks for total of 32 GB
    - Corsair Professional Series 860 Watt Digital ATX/EPS Modular 80 PLUS Platinum Power Supply AX860i (Bought this PS to replace the Kentek PS)
    - N780 TF 3GD5/OC (GeForce GTX 780 GAMING) (traded Geforce GTX 780 card for the MSI version of the GTX 780 card)
OK... I got the new Corsair 860w power supply installed and i installed the new MSI GTX 780 video card with the specs above everything installed fine no problems and my son was playing the Bio Shock Infinite game on Steam and about 1 hour into the game he got a blue screen of death, says something like "to prevent damage windows is now resetting" and it turns off so fast can't read the rest of the message.
I'm going to here in a little bit and update all device drivers with MSI Live update utility and also update the motherboard BIOS again to v10.11.
I'm really confused here, I'm also going to take out some memory and try to run it with sticks only in slot 2 & 4 to see if it runs more stable like that, also should i update the video card to the latest driver, i know the latest is not always the greatest driver.
I want to think you guys again for your help & time with this issue. I really dont know what else to do here, everything is new in this PC.
    Thanks

  • Issues with external drive on Mac Mini / Lion

I'm using an external SATA drive in a Newer Technologies Voyager dock (which I like to call the "toaster") with a brand new Mac Mini i5 2.3G via FW800.
The drive was formatted using Disk Utility on a G4 running Tiger (10.4.11)
With the drive mounted, the Mini's performance seems to slow down, and it randomly dismounts the drive, with the usual warning, "you disconnected your drive without dismounting it first, bla bla...)
I think I remember when Leopard was new, there was a firmware issue that had to be dealt with, and when moving drives from OS 9 to X and back to 9, I lost access to the data on the drive.
I'm also aware of the partitioning scheme difference when formatting drives for use on the Intel machines.
Could either of the above have anything to do with the problem I'm having here?

I'm not an expert in this, but as far as I know, GUID only comes into play if you want to boot from it, but...... you never know, it could - here is an excerpt from Disk Utility:
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
Another thought is: how old is that drive? All hard drives fail sooner or later - have you tried to check it with Disk Utility or something like Disk Warrior?

  • Anyone have issues with Sata 3 SSD in the 2011 Macbook Pro

    Hi Guys and Gals.
Does anyone have issues with the Macbook Pro 2011 Model with a Sata3 Solid State Drive ?
I have issues and have a Vertex3 made by OCZ. I am in active discussions with OCZ to find a resolution on their end. I have also contacted Apple Care and Intel and have run into dead ends.
However I am bringing my MBP for a repair, logic board replacement and will post the results after they change the logic board for me.
Check my thread on OCZ: http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?89970-A-call-to-all-Macbo ok-Pro-2011-Users-with-SATA3-Issues
    Regards,
    Jase

Well, my My Genius appointment went very much as anticipated - it might well be a SATA III connection but Apple they do not support SATA III drives - least of all other people's.
Furthermore, they do not actually support anything other than the original configuration as sold - so given that I bought a 750 GB HD version, that is what I am stuck with - I asked Apple (London Regent St) if they could upgrade it to one of their own SSDs if I paid for it - they could not.  They can only repair the machine to its original condition. They could not even advise me as to what Apple co-branded SSD I should look for to be compatible with this model - 512 Gb drives do come up on Ebay - Apple / Toshiba seems to be the normal one - but they couldn't advise if that would work or not. So it could be good money after bad.
Anyhow, they finally agreed to swap the cable, for a charge, so that will take two or thee days, plus the 5mins to do the job.  I will post the results of the cable swap when I have it. They could not tell me whether it would be a different version of the SATA cable to the one already in the machine - but I asked to keep the old one so I can see if there is any visible difference.
It does seem strange that Apple support thunderbolt drives - which you can't even buy yet, but don't support SATA III in either Mac Pro or MAcBook Pro given that the full 3.0 standard was released on May 27, 2009.
Two and a bit years is a long time in tech terms.

I, as so many others, are also facing issues with my SATA 3 SSD. I've been reading about people having issues on OCZ's forum, on Intel's forum and all over the web. I have a MBP 2011 13" bought last month with the 6/6 setup.
Hotjase, have you come to understand that the issue lies with the logic board? One would hope that Apple would owe up and come forward if there are in fact faulty logic borards. I have read that Apple have gone from 6/3 to 6/6 and then back to 6/3, though I do not know if this is applicable to all MBP models, or just some. As I sayed, I have the 13" model.
SdeS, what was the result of your talk with the Genius? Did you receive a new cable? If so what result?

  • RS480M2-IL Problems with SATA Drives.

I work at an Official AMD Service Center and we build Custom AMD64 Systems.  The IDE Boot Delay was removed from the latest BIOS update.  Thanks to this, SATA drives are having problems booting up.  SATA Drives are taking too long to spool up, so the system moves on to the next Device on the bootup priority list.  (One customer was booting up from a external USB 2.0 Drive or CD-Rom Drive (Not bootable media).  If we disable everything but the Hard Drive from the selection, sometimes we get a Stop after Post Error  We build systems with the SATA drives due to them supposedly being faster.  Should we switch to IDE drives for the boot drives, or is there a fix for this problem.  Please let me know and send an email to [email protected]  .  Thank You.

I'm experiancing the same problem with this board. I purchased back in february and tired a SATA drive then and it was slower then molassas in the snow. I thought is was a windows issue. I bought the board for Linux and loaded Fedora 3 and Fedora 4-64 on a PATA drive and have had it running almost flawlessly ever since. The main problem has been the reboot freeze that is reported all over the web.
I put a SATA drive back into this system as a dual boot, loaded Win2k and once again slooooooow. Download all the latest drivers, tried again, same thing.
Today it freezes on the boot screen, still loades my Linux no problem and runs Folding@Home 24/7 no problem.
Ok, Flash bios from CD built on WinXP - No problem goes well.
Reboot problem seems better but now it won't reboot from linux, have to hit reset
Voltage controls for fans no longer available    Still no controls for raising frontside bus
Still won't recognize the drive. Put drive in K7NF Delta, Boots fine (complains about drivers but expected). Drive is OK feew.
Rebooted Linux from PATA and system is fine.

  • Z77A-G43 Issue - Bios not working

    Dear Forum,
I have a quite strange issue with my brand new system.
    Specs first:
    MSi Z77A-G43 BIOS 2.2/2.3, i5 3570K, Win7 Professional 64 bit
    G.Skill Value Series 8GB DDR3-1333 Kit
be quiet! Straight Power E9 580 Watt CM
    Gigabyte GeForce GTX560 Ti
    OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD
    Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB
    LG GH24NS70
    Problem description:
All parts are brand new. Machine was assembled (antistatic wristband used), Display connected to PCIE-Nvidia gfx card.
Display showed post codes (99, A2) in low resolution and got stuck with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.
After some cable checking I switched to the built-in gfx (from CPU) and the machine booted into bios (v.2.2) after showing the MSI logo.
Whenever I tried to change or even view the bios settings, the machine froze and had to be hard reset.
I installed Win7 without a flaw and updated the bios to 2.3 using Live Update. No errors.
Now whenever I trie to access the bios (hitting DEL) the bios image (blueish) pops up for a short moment and the machine reboots. Nothing else I can do there. It still booted though into windows.
I did the CMOS-reset which showed the initial "settings have been reset, hit F1 for setup or F2 to continue" message but when hitting F1 it again flashed the bios image for a microsecond and rebooted.
Windows still booted normally, when starting Click Bios II application it showed the loading screen but nothing happened. So I decided to reflash 2.3 Bios.
    --> Nothing changed
I then flashed the Bios down to 2.2 using the MSIHQ-Flash utility (awesome tool) which lead to the same effect as before:
I could access the bios but could not change any settings, the machine froze. The click-Bios application started though.
    Now I have two questions:
    1) What's the matter with the board/bios? I can still return the mainboard to the vendor but would rather like to see this issue fixed
    2) Any ideas with the non-running PCIE-graphics card? Could this be related to the mainboard/bios as well? PSU has 580W and all cables were connected properly.
Thanks for any input that might help..

Wouldn't even bother trying anymore with v2.2 since it needs v2.3 to fully support the CPU you have. Recommend to stay with v2.3 since it updates the Management Engine. Going to v2.2 may be causing a chip corruption of some kind.
Not sure what kind or brand of keyboard is involved here, but try with a generic USB one. I had to enable F-Lock on my keyboard to make it go to the UEFI/BIOS using the Delete key. Test with one RAM stick only in the primary dimm slot. Depending on the manual revision, that is either DIMM1 or DIMM2. Update to v2.3, remove the PSU power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS and reset, and test again.
I did use another keyboard, I did a CMOS reset, I  have only one module in DIMM2 as stated in the manual. I guess I went through all usual troubleshouting steps. some things in my system don't like each others.
what I did not do so far is comparing the serial of the old and new mainboard. will do that tonight - I srsly hope they didn't send the faulty one again..

    Thanks

Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit, Video card is EVGA GTX295, Marvell 91xx Sata 6G Controller Driver is 1.0.0.1034.
    Oh wow that is crazy.
So there are only 2 explanations left since I only have GTX260.
    1. I have some fluke Rev 0 motherboard.
    2. Marvell chip doesn't like Crucial SSDs. Which I did hear kind of on Crucial forum. (I am thinking this).
To finally conclude it is Crucial SSD, can you take me which revision/model of motherboard you have? I think i seen it on a corner of the motherboard printed. Or in the bios.
I'll get mine from the BIOS tonight.
Also I wonder if overclocking the CPU increase the speed.... I asked brasstech if he overclocked... I hope he did, that would explain things.

  • Cannot use IDE drive with SATA drive

I just installed a 60GB Maxtor Serial ATA hard drive in VIA port 1. However, when I install my previous Maxtor 20GB EIDE hard drive in IDE1, bootup hangs at the "Serial Ch. 0/Ch. 1 device" detection screen.
Is there a trick to this??? I really need the data off my IDE drive. How do I get an IDE drive to exist along side a pre-installed SATA drive?
And does it matter if the IDE drive is set for Master or Slave?

The IDE drive should be set to "master" or "slave" depending on which connector of the cable you're using.  The IDE cable included with the board clearly labels which is which.
You didn't say but I'll assume you have a K8T Neo.
If you still cannot get it to work, you should try the Promise controller.
