Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt - Disk read error
Hi, I'm having a lot of trouble with Disk Read Errors and at times, the motherboard not recognising my SSD is even there and giving me media not present errors. These don't come up every time but I'd say they come up 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time the motherboard boots into Windows 8 normally. Which leads me to think that it might be a connection or interfacing error of some sort.
My SSD (SDSSDX-240G-G25) is plugged into port 1 or port 2 (errors on both ports on that controller). On port 3 and 4 I have a Blu-Ray drive and a 3TB hard drive. On 5 and 6 I have a 3TB and a 1TB hard drive.
The connections are all secure. My BIOS is up to date (think it's version 40 off the top of my head, but it's as up to date as it was on Tuesday this week). I have tried reformatting and reinstalling Windows but get the same errors. In fact, the motherboard is now recognising the SSD less and less and often in the BIOS it won't see it at all.
Because it's booting up sometimes I feel like it isn't a failed drive but maybe it's a failed controller on the motherboard? What options can I try to fix it without taking the whole computer apart and sending the motherboard and SSD back?
Also, all the disks are set to GPT. Motherboard BIOS won't boot when I set it to UEFI so it's set to UEFI + Legacy and booting to the SSD first.
Thanks,
Ed
try new SATA cables as these tend to fail.

(msi z77a-g45 motherboard) A disk read error occurring
For the msi z77a-g45 Motherboard
I'm getting the "a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart" error when booting in my new build.
I have recently switched out my 4gb stick of g.skill ripjaws ram for 4x2 gb sticks of 1333mhz ram. I have not done anything besides this and i just started getting this error. I tried each ram stick individually and they boot but i get the error. I tried the 2 and 4 dims and still get the error. I tried re-seating the sata and data cables to my optical drive and hd.
The only thing i can think of is that i was installing a windows update just before i left to go change the ram so if that could be an issue please let me know.
Thanks.>>Posting Guide<<

MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt - UNBOXED!!!
Intel’s Thunderbolt Technology is seen usually in high-end motherboard models. But today MSI just released a more budget friendly Z77 motherboard with this feature in it.
The “Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt” boasts features like Military Class III Components for quality and stability, OC Genie II which automatically boost your computer performance in seconds, Click BIOS II for easier and friendlier to use UEFI BIOS, THX TruStudio PRO which delivers the best audio experience, supports Nvidia SLI and AMD Crossefire multi-graphic configurations and lastly Thunderbolt which delivers 10/GBps of data and display transfers – in each direction, at the same time – using a single cable to connect devices in a daisy chain.
Military Class III Components are seen around the CPU socket. These are the SFC and Solid Capacitors
The layout of the board is pretty the same as any MSI Z77 SKU models they have to offer. VRM heatsinks comes with flat heatpipe for better heat dissipation and a larger heatsink for the south.
Three PCIEx16 slots for multi-graphic card configurations. Single video card can run @ Gen3 x16 while if you are about to use two it will be @ Gen3 x8 x8 and lastly for three, it will be Gen3 x8 x4 x4.
All of the ports are handled by the Intel chipset. Starting from the left, you have USB 3.0 then 4x SATA 3GB/s in black and in white are 2x SATA 6GB/s.
The rear I/O Ports are pretty standard but with the additional of the Thunderbolt port which is located beneath the VGA port. The board also have SPDIF/Coaxial Ports for Digital Audio Output.
Then you have the bundles in the package.Quote from: Bernhard on 29-October-12, 15:10:10
Is there any testing report that will follow to show us what was achieved with this board ? i.e. your practical tests on using Thunderbolt vs USB3 ?
Such a pity there is no PCI slot.
Or a DVI connection. -
Urgent need of assistance, MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt Unknown problems
Recently I have built my first computer, a desktop with the MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt motherboard, an Intel core I5 CPU and a NVIDIA Ge-Force GTX 650 TI Video Card, and a 850W PSU (way more than what is needed). The computer worked perfectly fine for about a week, I did not initially order a Disc Drive because I figured I could install windows with a flash drive (which apparently does not work) so I installed ubuntu for a while (irrelevant to the problem) I ordered the Disc Drive and when it came in I plugged it in and the computer would not turn on, so I spent a while trying to figure out why it did not turn on when the day before it worked fine, eventually after basically disconnecting almost everything and putting it back together it worked. But it had no signal to the monitor. I have no means of telling if it is a UEFI/BIOS problem, a video card problem, or a CPU problem. All 4 LED's for the CPU phase are constantly on, when before when the computer worked fine it would only have the first phase LED blink, so I believe it might possibly be a CPU problem, though the video card is what controls the output for monitors so it equally could be the problem. For the motherboard I tried just about everything to reset it, everything, except flashing the BIOS (which I don't want to try unless it is the only solution left) I tried to clear the CMOS, took the BIOS battery out and put it back in again. Please help!
I do not yet have access to another desktop in which to put my graphics card. I just tried reseating everything and still no signal to the monitor. The VGA port on my motherboard does not work, it never has for some reason, I did not get intel integrated graphics with my CPU, I am not sure if that is why the VGA does not work.

Need help troubleshooting resets - Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt
Mobo: MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt

Primary Drive: Corsair Force Series GT 90GB (6Gb/s) SSD (CSSD-F90GBGT-BK)
OS: Windows 8
Running stock, board is otherwise very stable (memtest and prime95 passed).
About half the time, this board resets resuming from S3 sleep. I'm at a loss as to why. So far I've replaced the memory, switched PCIe slots, reflashed BIOS, set MB defaults, over/under volted CPU and Memory, and switched memory slots. In my current test, I've pulled the graphics card and am now running on the integrated GPU.
My questions are:
- if this holds, how do I determine if it's the card or the draw on the PSU (no other to test) from the card
- anything else I should try before I purchase 2x the components (as I have already done for the memory)?
Thanks!Quote from: xmad on 13-June-13, 05:05:47

Cyclical Reboot After Sleep - Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt
Often times my computer will restart 3-4 times after resuming from S3 sleep. It is very stable otherwise (passed memtest and prime95). While recent, This is not my first build, but have not seen this particular issue before.
Was hoping for some suggestions on where to start troubleshooting. I am running stock and nearly all default settings in BIOS. I assume this is a memory or possibly a CPU voltage issue, but not looking to re-invent the wheel if someone can point me in the right direction.

This is usually covered in the user manual?

EuP 2013 [Disabled]
Enables or disables the system power consumption according to EuP2013

[Enabled] Optimize the system power consumption according to EuP 2013

[Disabled] Disables this function.

Oh, I read it, trust me. This did not explain why it was rebooting when coming out of S3 sleep.
Unfortunately, it did not help -- I had another reset this morning. Going to mess with C1E and Intel C-States next to see if that eliminates it. -
Z77A-GD80 Thunderbolt (7757) & Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt (7752) & Windows 8 issue
While running Windows 8 with either one of the motherboards, if you have an unknown "Base System Device" in your device manager, you will need to change a BIOS option (figure 1).
VEN_8086&DEV_1548
- Z77A-GD80 Thunderbolt (7757)
- Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt (7752)
Go into the BIOS > Settings > Advanced > Intel® Thunderbolt > Security Level > Set to "Normal Mode w/o NHI". Save and exit the BIOS. When you reboot, the unknown device will be gone (figure 2).
This is Intel issue, however there will be no impact in regards to usability, features, performance, or stability.
FAQ Link:
http://service.msicomputer.com/html/popup/TechSup/formviewer.asp?esoformid=3036It can also be that Intel Smart Connect is now enabled by default if you flash the bios. So if you flash you bios and notice this, with the z77a-gd80, that could be it as well.

"A Disk Read Error Has Occured" past 239 FSB?
The title says it all. I'm runnin an Neo Platinum 2 and when booting up overclocked past 239 FSB I get "A Disk Read Error Has Occured" and it asks me to reboot. Is this as simple as my SATA being overclocked too far? I was under the impression this board had an SATA lock, but I could be wrong. Any suggestions on getting past this? Or have I reached my peak?

My current Configuration:
3 node cluster, using clustered shared storage and about 22 VM's. The Host servers are running 2012 Data Center while all guest are running 2012 Standard. The SAN is EqualLogic and we are using HIT Kit 4.5.
I have a CSV that is running out of space, so I created another CSV so that I could move some of the VM's to a new home. I tested this by creating a test VM, and moved it successfully 3 times. I then moved an actual
LIVE VM and while it seemed to move ok, it will now not start. The message is "a disk read error occurred Press ctrl+alt+del to restart". I moved the test VM and it failed as well.
I have read several things about this, but nothing seems to relate to my specific issue. I have verified that VSS is working and free of errors as well. From the Settings menu for the VM, if I select "Inspect" the drive,
the properties all look fine. It is a VHDX and both the current file size and maximum disk size seem correct.
The VM's were moved using the "move - virtual machine storage" option within Failover Cluster Manager.
Suggestions?
Thanks.Lets see if I can answer all of those and I appreciate the brain storming. This really needs to work, correctly.
1. The Storage is moving.
2. VM's and SAN are on same device.
3. No, my Clustered Shared Volume, CSV, is out of room, (more one that later)
4. No, I actually have 2 sans grouped together. However, I'm moving the VM', form one CSV to another CSV on the Same san. EqualLogic PS 6110 is the one I am trying to move VMS around on, and the other SAN not involved in any way except
for it is in a SAN group is an EqualLogic PS6010.
5. No error During move, it took about 5-10 minutes, no error messages. Note, I did a test and it worked GREAT 3 times. Now both a live VM, and the test VM are doing the same thing.
6. No, the machine is not to large. The test making was a 50 gig drive, just 2012 standard installed with updates. The live VM was a 75 gig VM that was my Trend Micro Server, or anti-virus host.
7. Expand the existing SCV? Yes I should be able to, but there is an issue there. The volume was expanded correctly, Equallogic sees the added space, Fail Over cluster manager sees the added space, however disk manager only
sort of does. When looking at disk manager, there are 2 areas that tell you a little bit about the drive. The top part and then the bottom part. The top part only shows 500G, the original size, while the bottom part
says that it is 1 TB in size. I call Dell's technical support and after they looked at it I was told by the technician that they had seen this a couple of times and the only way to fix it was to move all the VM's to another CSV and delete the troubled
CSV. I thought about adding more space to the troubled CSV, but its on a production server with about 12 VM's running on it and I did not want to take a chance. The Trend VM was running on CSV-1 and working fine.
I must admit that the test VM, was on CSV-2. I moved the Test VM from csv-2 to csv-3 back and forth several times with no errors. The Trend Server was on CSV-1 and was moved to CSV-3, however it failed. Again, I then moved
the test VM from CSV-2 to CSV-3 and it failed the same way. I could not test the "TEST - VM" on csv-1 due to csv-1 not having enough space.
8. I did disable the network from the VM to see if that mattered it did not.
9. I have not yet had a chance to connect the VHDX to a new VM, but I will do that in about an hour, hopefully. Once I am able to test that suggestion I will post the results as well.
Again, thanks for all the suggestions and comments, as I had rather have lots to look at and try. I hope I answered them well enough.

Error:
Suddenly today, about 9 hours ago, the laptop froze while surfing normally on the net.. After a reset - done as followed: holding power button till computer shuts down, and power on again - the computer wouldn't start windows again, and only gives the message:
A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
And will repeat the message after booting up with HP logo, and not enter Windows, time and time again if you press C+A+D
I've tried recovery system, but that didn't work, and I'ved tried CHKDSK and it found and said it repaired some errors but it still happens.
I then ran the start-up-test and in the end I got Failure ID 90DX6C-56S5S1-9XL03f-60S403 on Hard Disk 1.
I tried to Google it, and no results.
No recent system updates or anything new installed in a few weeks.Hi,
It would look like the Hard Drive is failing/failed, but try running the following test from the bios menu as it can provide a more meaningful error code.
Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu. Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive. Post back with the details of any error messages.

"Disk read error occurred" cannot even load System Recovery
Hello,
yesterday I powered on my computer, and it was almost froze, with only the mouse moving and even the task manager not showing up when called.
I first tried to make it go in standby, as I thought it was some program which didnt start as planned. After I closed the screen , the screen went black, but the pc continued to run. I then pressed the power button, shutting the system the hard way.
After that, I powered back the pc, which now only showed "Disk read error occurred, press ctrl+alt+del to restart" and obviously this wasnt the solution. I tried resetting the BIOS, then running the diagnostics on f2: it ALWAYS passes the test the first time, then if i try to run the diagnostics again, it says "NOT INSTALLED". I tried running the system recovery on f11, but the same "disk read error" appears.
I-ve already confirmed the problem lies in the hard disk itself {hitachi 750gb}, having plugged it in another notebook with an hitachi hard disk and still showing the same problem, while the other hard disk booted just fine in my HP.
I tried with a win7 cd, both recovering and installing a new version, but they both kept frozen for about 1 hour and did nothing.
I then made a bootable USB with Trinity Recovery Kit and after a quick diagnostic, it said boot partition has "unclean" windows files and tried fixing the problem, without success. I-m now writing from a bootable USB linux distro, because i cannot find a bootable iso oh hitachi recovery program, what should I do?
Is it possible the hard disk failed so bad for an uncommon closure of the system? It looks to me like some data got corrupted.
Please help me, as I-m an academy student and I use the PC for almost everything.
Thank you.I-ve booted Boot Repair 64bit and tried repairing the boot section... i even checked the boot infos and printed an info file, can someone answer what the actual FOG is happening here?

Yay...disk read error
I just started an entirely new PC, except for the hard drive (160 gb, maxtor), which still had my previous installment of windows XP. On boot-up, I get the 'Post' splash screen, followed by like 10 sec's of a prompt if I want to set up RAID, and then I get ... 'disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to reset.' I rechecked all connections and another run-through with no success.
Then, I tried replacing the hard drive with an older one which had windows 98, where the system got the splash screen, the raid prompt, and then just sat at the windows 98 splash screen indefinitely.
Lastly, I put in the windows XP cd with the 160 gig hd and created a new partition on the c: drive. After partitioning and prompting to reset, it again just gets to the 'disk read error, press cntrl+alt+del to reset' message.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.Hmm . dunno exactly. i think the best process is memory module.
test cables for ide by swaping them round with the ones that are optical
what rating is your psu and whats are the amp specs
Try formatting a complete drive with full ntfs format. if you current drive has a previous partuion on it then that could be corrupting it.
we know the bios posts and we know ide works to an extent or your optical drive would fail
it seems that when loading os the resources may be taking more power if a drive is not getting power then it will also result in this error -

GT780 Disk Read Error, Boots fine after 15-45 minutes
Hi.
I've been having a problem with my laptop for the past few months now. When I start it up I end up getting a disk read error but after a short time it seems to boot up properly. I will have this problem for a couple days and then the problem disappears for about a month then reappears for couple days then disappears for the same amount time. I've sent it in once but the problem started again about 1 month after it was sent back. Does anybody have any idea what the problem could be?Quote from: Svet on 12-February-12, 15:24:07
looks like HDD has a problem
