Z77a gd55, living with its issues

so since i have had this mobo its been riddled with issues which service has not been able to fix.
bootloops, board needs 3 goes min to just restart, wake from sleep and many more some mornings from a cold boot.
bios still does not display right because i am using a hdmi cable.....not sure why it only wants to output 800/600 res via hdmi but after 2 new revisions it still does.
the click bios app will just lock up my os and needs a hard restart so i cant edit the bios that way either.
starting to regret picking this board now, not sure i would ever buy another msi motherboard to be honest.

thanks for the input guys
psu, no as i only really have this one which is able to power this system atm. i do have a bequiet 600w unit on the way which i can test with when i get it but the others i have wouldnt be able to. i say that i have a 500w unit that should do on paper as it has enough amps but tbh i dont want to risk that. its not a tv either mate, its a hg281d monitor which came back from rma with a 2560/1600 panel.
dirty power from grid, i like that idea as its a new one if nothing else i dont think its this as i think i would notice it whist overclocking things on the ragged edge of stability. this z77 is my daily box so its only really ever running a safe oc (5ghz or less). i do bench other hardware which has much less stability and i think that would be more prone to issues caused by this. i mean i cant see dirty power from the grid causing the bios output to only be 800/600 res and while it maybe the cause of a system lock up i think the fact that it only happens when i try and launch the click bios app makes the click bios app more likely the cause.
switched bios revision just, 1.4b2 seems to have fixed the bootloops on restart and coming out of sleep, video output is still too low to show all the onscreen items.

  • Z77a-GD55 no post new build

    Hi,
i just tried posting on the z77a-gd55 board with just the cpu(i5 3570k) 1 stick of ram and it doesnt post.
it gets stuck in a boot loop. it powers on for like 5sec then restarts. the cpu fan works and i am using a corsair tx750v2 psu.
any idea what it could be?
i tried moving the ram to dimm 1 and still the same and same with dimm2

Please post your full system spec >>Posting Guide<<
Test the board outside your case, placing it on a non conducting surface, i.e. plain piece of cardboard or untreated wood.
Have you done a full CMOS clear with power cord removed ? >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
If testing outside the case does not solve the issue, then do a CPU socket inspection for bent pins.

My macbook air will not connect to the internet. There is an exclamation point in the wifi icon and when i go into preferences i see that it is setting its own IP address. I have a macbookpro that is able to connect with no issue. HELP

Reset the TC to factory and start again.
Use all SMB type names for wireless and base station.. Not apple type names.. this is more important since Mavericks.
I also recommend different names for the different bands.
    So for example.
TC name.. TCgenx (I use whatever the generation number is for the x.. eg TCgen4 or latest one TCgen5)
    WIreless name.. TC24ghz for 2.4ghz
    TC5ghz for 5ghz
You can also set the channel manually.
If you still have issues.. start with no security and then if it fails to connect there is something seriously wrong with the laptop. Did you upgrade install Mavericks?? That can lead to driver issues.. I would recommend a clean install.

Take machine apart and try barebone as you already did (only PSU and Motherboard with Ram,CPU and CPU Cooler) outside of case on a non conductive surface (e.g. wood).

  • Maybe a problem with Z77A-GD55

    Hello,
I think I may have a some kind of a problem with my motherboard. After an upgrade I installed windows 7 64bit and took a brief look, ran some test and one thing stood out, that one temperature sensor always shows more than 60 degrees(TMPIN1), is it normal? I haven't installed any MSI utilities and haven't looked what bios version I have. If it is necessary I can post it when i get back home.
    Thanks for replies.

    No problem. Here's the Intel pdf link (Table 3-1 has the limits);

hansip87, to relieve any anxiety, recommend to submit a ticket to MSI Tech Support and ask them if PCH is a sensored reading. My guess is it is bogus. I have a Z68 that reads -24C for TMPIN1 for an example. The PCH can also be checked and confirmed by using an IR thermal device.

After getting back to my PC, it is not 100c :p seems like i read the wrong value before.. so thanks anyway :D

  • Lower RAM score in Z77A-GD55 compared to P55A-GD65?

Just another issue i want to clarify when using this board. Using Team Xtreme RAM PC12800 7-7-7-21 4GB with BIOS 1.3 and 3570K OCed to 4.2Ghz:
    1. The Read performance of 2T is clearly faster than 1T Command Rate. It was dropped from 19000MB/s(2T) to 13000MB/s (1T) What gives?
    2. The WEI score for my RAM is only 5.9? Huh? it was 7.9 when i'm using my old P55-GD65 with same RAM and Core i5 750. Again, what gives? have tried to re-run it but no change. Other score is inline but the WEI RAM score is way lower than it was before. Command Rate changes won't fix this score. The weird thing is the RAM performance score in AIDA actually is inline with previous result on the P55 board i had. So i know it might be a software issue but still, just to make sure if there's any issue with anything that might causes this.
Hope somebody can give me any enlightenment or any trick.
    My previous setup was:
    1. Core i5 750 @3.6Ghz
    2. P55A-GD65
    3. RAID 0+1 Matrix 500GB WD
    4. RAM Team Xtreme 7-7-7-21 PC12800 4GB

WEI means diddly squad and its just a bunch of numbers.
Does your system feel slower, do things take more time to load or something similar, then by all means continue your search, if not, leave it!, as said WEI means nothing!
Same goes for benches, they mean nothing, unless you are a numberfreak and like to watch the numbers get higher and higher.
Is all about how you experience your computer, not about some silly program that churnes out a number.
Yes i know, but doesn't the same applies for overclocking too? just to satisfy that need of higher number so yeah..

  • [Help] MSI radeon 7870 2GB OC problem on MSI - Z77A-GD55

Installed my new GPU onto my  MSI - Z77A-GD55 , but monitor stays in power save mode , switched the GPU to the lower PCI2.0 slot (there are 3 of them) top 2 are PCIE 3.0 and the lowest is 2.0 and it worked , but the problem my GPU Fans cannot fit because of the USB/POWER ON-OFF top case buttons(wires) since its right next to the PCI 2.0 slot.
Bios is updated to the latest version 1.11
PCI-gen3 is on Auto in the bios settings (There is only Auto and Disable) option.
Any one has this issue before?

Did any card before work in the PCI-E 3.0 slots?
Yes my old ati radeon 4670 BUT i had this issue again first time i added the old GPU right as i bought the motherboard  (1 year ago ) where my screen would be in Power save  mode , but i removed my ram , removed power cable to drain power , and my GPU worked , from that i never removed / added anything in my computer (hardware wise) so this problem was here right from the start , the thing is i fixed it the 1st time , but i did had the 1.1 bios (even though i tried installing the new GPU on the 1.1 version and it didnt worked so i updated my bios to 1.11 and still the same issue)
Also as this motherboard has 3 PCI slots 2 are PCIE3 and the lowest is 2.0 (on 2.0 my old/new GPU works fine , devise manager sees it and drivers working aswell) but not on the other 2 PCIEx3 slots , maybe the top PCIE ex3 slot is broken, but the 2nd PCIe3 slot i never installed anything there, and still doesnt work aswell , so i think its either some issue in the BIOS settings
Some bios settings i could find that has to do with GPU

  • Nvidia 650x2gig fails in MSI Z77A gd55: need NVidia drop-back card.

    Gents:
    Running UBUNTU 12.04 under:

    MSI Z77A gd55 : BIOS V1.2
    2x8 gig Crucial ram
    320 gig SATA
"ULTRA" 650W PS @ 60 amps on 12 volt rail
    Auria 27" 2560x1440 monitor
My legacy gtx9400 vidcard will push the monitor, but my  new purpose-bought EVGA 650x2gig fails to generate **any** response (no signal) in the monitor.  An EVGA tek said it looked to him like a mobo BIOS/vidcard incompatibility.  He advised flashing BIOS; I am very **risk adverse** and never flash  BIOS. So assuming the problem is BIOS clashing with vidcard, then I need a downmarket/older vidcard.  What is a good -- older -- midmarket Nvidia  vidcard (  AMD Linux drivers inferior ) that the V1.2 MSI BIOS can handle?

Thanks for your interest & comments ... I am stumbling about and know it.
Believe me: the NVIDIA chip EVGA _650 vidcard fails totally in my system.  So you say I need BIOS V1.5 to run my 1240.v2 ... and I am **not competent** to risk that/any BIOS flash.  That's tuff-titty for me tho I get no error messages from my system.  Casual  *nix benchmarks  are respectable. Unless you consider the NVIDIA-650 vidcard failure an "error message". Very well ... I must work around that issue and not arrogantly try to do what I cannot do.  I **can** buy ( for less than $150)  & install an NVIDIA_550 vidcard ; if I think it will work. That's my question ... given that a legacy GTX_9400 works and the EVGA_650 fails, what likelihood that a last generation NV_550 vidcard works?
Or .. are you telling me that the early BIOS versions for the GD_55 are well&truly a mess and **nothing** may be trusted to work with them. I still will not risk a BIOS flash, but will climb down the vidcard ladder until some legacy part above the GTX_9400 works! Thanks again for your post and info.

  • Z77A-GD55 not booting(boot loop)

    hey ...
I got hold of a z77a-GD55 mobo where the previous owner did not know if this motherboard was working or not.
I have installed an i5 2300 CPU and 4gb ram on two sticks.
when I press the start button its turns on and runs for about 5 seconds and simply turns off and on again in a loop.No picture on screen.
All the phase leds turns on.
I have tried all ram slots with one stick of RAM, reset the bios, taken out the cpu and reseated it with new thermalpaste and with / without gpu.
I have only run this motherboard on a cardboard box.
    Can anyone help me here?

This sounds like the BIOS was corrupted due to a bad flash.  The boot block is probably bad too.  I've had this happen when trying to use the M-Flash function.
Download all of the different versions of the BIOS for your motherboard from the MSI main site.  Place all of the BIOS ROM files in a FAT32 formatted USB stick in the root directory.  Insert USB stick, hold down home key, and power on while holding down the home key.  Watch USB activity on the flash drive.  If the light on the USB flash drive blinks a lot, then it is loading your BIOS.
If that doesn't fix it, go to a computer shop and have them program your BIOS using an in-circuit SPI programmer.  You can buy a cheap one from China/Hong Kong if you feel like doing it yourself.
    Good luck.

  • MSI Z77A-GD55 Lockout

Hi there, I use a MSI Z77A-GD55 on my system and I believe I’ve made a terrible mistake.
I was messing around with the security settings and I thought that it would be cool to use a USB key instead of a password, so I made one through the MSI security screen on the bios setup.  When prompted, I double-clicked on one of the drives to select it as they key.  I immediately changed my mind and decided I wanted to use another one instead, so I plugged it in to my USB hub (while keeping the first one plugged in) and chose it instead.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but this second USB drive was an Ubuntu LinuxLive Key. I then clicked on the X in the upper right corner to save the changes I made and restart.
This is where I ran into issues.  The screen went dark, and in red letters, it said, “Warning!!! Please insert USB key press any key to check.”  I tried pressing any key, I shut down the computer and tried rebooting several minutes later, I tried re-plugging the USB drives, I tried getting back into the bios settings (I don’t suppose it would be very good security if it allowed me to do this!), but unfortunately, I could not get it to recognize that I still had every USB key it could possibly be plugged in!
What went wrong?  Did the LiveLinux key screw everything up?  Did I somehow mess up the key creation by choosing different drives?  How can these be recovered?  If they cannot be recovered, how can I access my computer?  I also had a Windows syskey file on the first USB drive- could this somehow have caused this?  Is there any way to solve this situation?
I haven't changed any files or formatted or done anything at all to the usb drives since the incident in the hopes that they can still regain my access.
I put a lot of work into building my system and I feel in over my head right now :(  Please help me regain access to my computer!

There is no way to get past this without the security usb key created. If the one created won't work the only possible solution would be asking MSI if this could be done if you prove your purchase: >>How to contact MSI.<<
Probably this didn't work because both sticks already were security keys. Make sure you don't use both but one at a time and retry.

  • MSI Z77a-gd55 ram question

Hello, I'm currently using the z77a-gd55 w/ my i5 3570k. I hear a lot of people running into ram upgrade problems (not from your mb in particular, but in general).
I'm wondering how well will this board work with 4 x 4 gb sticks, because I'm currently running on 2 x 4gb stick and I get the "warning low ram please close x programs" too often, so I want to upgrade to 4 x 4gb setup.
    I think i'm currently using this ram: G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBXL
But there seems to be a few other variations of that stick that looks exactly the same, but i just know for sure its 2 x 4gb G.Skill Ripjaws set.
Will buying another of that kit work?, and is there anything I should watch out for?
edit: also my current OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Corsair ram usually works fine, 8gb x 2 would be better.
What program are you using that needs so much ram. 8GB is generally overkill as it is.
A quick look at my resource manages shows me I am currently using 3gb.

  • MSI Z77A-GD55 doesn't read SYS FAN1 and SYS FAN2 speeds

    hi guys,
I'm using my MSI Z77A-GD55 in a Cooler Master HAF 912 Advanced case and I'm really happy with it.
my Xigmatek cpu fan is connectend to the CPU Fan connector and works well.
to the SYS FAN1 and SYS FAN2 connectors I connected the front panel red LED CM Mehaflow 20cm and black one on the top.
the BIOS is updated to the latest v1.11 and works pretty well.
now my problem is that the bios doesn't read the speeds of the fans connected to both SYS FAN connectors.
also no other software, like SpeedFan for example, shows the speeds - all just show 0 although the fans run properly.
as far as I remember at least one of the SYS FAN speeds was read properly with older bios versions.
but never both of them and that's wired...
that's what the bios reports as Hardware Monitoring:
I did not care much about that but right now I'm trying to make my system as silent as possible.
so it' very important to know what's going on there.
any ideas or suggestions about the issue?

Could it be because that your system fan got very low speed??  if your system fan got speed like 1000 RPM or above, it should be detected well...
or you could check first how fast your system fans by connecting it first to CPU fan just to check....
If system fan runs >1000RPM then it should be compatibility issue with the fan..

  • No virtu support in msi z77a gd55: how to use quick sync then?

    Hello there,
Being unaware at purchase time, i wonder how can i use quick sync of intel when in d-mode with z77A GD55? I ask this because no lucid hydra/virtu from msi download page. I know the cd contains it but it is not offered to be installed since the board is not lucid signed. If i force install it, the software runs in trial mode which is because of no license from the board. Are the virtu and virtu mvp actually different program? If no virtu support so whats the deal with bios settings to control lucid virtu?
Please help, it is with this issue that i have lost confidence using msi board (based on the fact that overclocking sucks too since the latest bios 1.3 vdroop control is useless and no offset voltage). So if this can be solved, i have some positive point to at least retain the board as my own. Thanks.

Quick sync is not a replacement for Virtu. They are two different products.
Quick sync transcodes movies using the Intel IGPU.

Currently Intel’s Quick Sync transcode is only supported by two applications: Cyberlink’s Media Espresso 6 and Arcsoft’s Media Converter 7. Both of these applications are video to go applications targeted at users who want to take high resolution/high bitrate content and transcode it to more compact formats for use on smartphones, tablets, media streamers and gaming consoles. The intended market is not users who are attempting to make high quality archives of Blu-ray content. As a result, there’s no support for multi-channel audio; both applications are limited to 2-channel MP3 or AAC output. There’s also no support for transcoding to anything higher than the main profile of H.264.

With Virtu you end up with is a system that should run all 3D games on your discrete GPU, and run all video decoding and encoding on SNB's GPU. Since this isn't switchable graphics but rather a form of GPU virtualization you can actually run iGPU and dGPU applications at the same time (e.g. you can watch a movie in one window on the iGPU and play a game in another on the dGPU).
