Z77a-gd65 and evga 660ti pci question

Hey folks,
I have been updating/rebuilding a system and have gone with a z77a-gd65 MB with the evga 660ti graphics card.  My question is that when booting on the initial splash screen I can see that the system is using PCI 2.0 instead of PCI 3.0, is there something in the BIOS that I missed?
What are the main benefits of PCI3.0 over PCI2.0.
Rgds

Flash the bios with the attached archive. (Full release version A70 + ME flash)
>>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<
Use option 1 and point it at the compressed archive and it will prepare the usb stick for flashing.
When complete, do a full cmos clear, then install the most recent ME 8 Drivers:

Ok, i've did this thing, now works, but the sound sounds only in the right side of the headphones, and the sound is very very slow....
which of the 2 audio header plugs did you connect to the mother board ac97 or HDaudio?
have you connected the headphones to the rear pannel connector of the motherboard to see if its better?

  • Z77A-GD65 and Radeon R9 290 multi GPU problem

    Hi
I am trying to setup four R9290 GPUs on the Z77A-GD65 board and for the life of me cannot get it to work. Using Windows 7 64bit with 8GB memory. I have tried installing the cards from the CPU end and backwards. Using the latest AMD drivers (13.12). Using 1x to 16x riser cables not powered.
I think the problem is either not enough power on the PCIE bus or Crossfire is not working.
Can anyone offer any help please?
    Thanks

Are you joining the Red Rockets? If not, this thread is in the wrong part of the forum. The mainboard is only rated and certified to run a total of 3 AMD graphics cards in Crossfire. It also depends on the CPU used. With a Sandy Bridge, only a maximum of 2 graphics cards can be used, 3 with an Ivy Bridge.

Nope! Only 16 PCI-E lanes in the processor. If you want 4 GPU's, get a pair of dual GPU nVidia graphics cards.
Allocation with 3 graphics cards is 8X 4X 4X for a total of all 16 available lanes.

  • Z77A-GD65 and frontal USB 3.0 randomly disconnect

Hi i use on my case Enermax Hoplite ST the front USB 3.0 port that have a 20 pin usb 3.0 header cable to connect on my Z77A-GD65 MB, i use this port with external usb 3.0 feed powered enclosure hard-disk Samsung F3  - 3,5 " 1TB SATA  for back up .... randomly, without any reason, enclosure disconnect , why? i haven't this problem if i connect the enclosure on frontal usb 2.0 and even if i connect to REAR USB 3.0 port .... only frontal USB 3.0 have this problem ... why? any idea? maybe frontal USB 3.0 have less ampacity of rear USB 3.0, than disconnect my enclosure?
    bye

Could be a problem with your Enermax case's front cabling. If you have another USB 3 front or rear connection bracket, then you could plug that into the USB 3 header to test.
Else you will have to check with MSI technical what the max amps are on the USB 3 header. Mine works just fine with a portable 500GB external portable drive.

  • Z77A-GD65 and fan controls

I'm considering buying MSI Z77A-GD65. It has the better Realktek audio chip and Intel LAN chip. But I need to know what kind of fan controls it has:
    1. What kind of fan headers it has? (PWM, voltage controlled, how many?)
    2. What BIOS settings it has for fans? Ie. What is the minimum duty cycle for manual PWM fan control? What other settings and modes?
    3. Are there any plans to improve the BIOS fan controls in later BIOS updates?
This is essential thing for a silent computer. If MSI is good enough, I'll get it. Otherwise I have to consider Intel DZ77BH-55K.
PS. I'm only interested in BIOS settings, not possible Windows software settings. I use both Windows and Linux so everything must be controlled from BIOS.

    Hi
I just bought that exact board for the same reasons you are considering it. The only Z77 board in that price range with both Intel nic and the better realtek Audio chip
The only thing this board is lacking is exactly fan control. But i knew this before i bought board. You have the standard CPU fan Auto setting, but that's pretty much it. (at least what i have found)
I invested a few extra euros in Silent case fans. For CPU i use the Corsair H80 that has its own fan control anyway.
So i ended up with a relatively silent PC anyway.
The board is brilliant for OC, and in general a very good board.

  • Z77A-GD65 and Intel Rapid Start -suddently a problem ?

    Greetings.
Have been using Fast Boot with my mobo since I learned how to do it, and it has worked flawless. But suddently something annoying is begun.
When power on with IRS active, it starts to load with black screen, but after about 5 seconds, the hdd-led turns off, and my monitor goes to sleepmode (no signal from graphic-card). It then just hold there for 15-25 seconds, then wake on again and boot to windows 7.
At first I had an access-code to log into windows, and with this active the pause 15-25 seconds is after the screen to type password is on, but BEFORE I can actually type anything.
    What can cause this error?
On a secondary SSD I have installed Windows 8, incl. Intel Rapid Start, and the error is ALSO there! So my guess is, that it is something in the BIOS, but I have not changed anything in BIOS (just the bootorder to start from either SSD1 or SSD2 (Win7 or Win8).
Please help if you can. I have braged about my 10 seconds start to a friend, but when I showed it to him, I had this silly error, so instead of 10 seconds it took 33 seconds. It was so embarrassing for me

Is the hibernation partition large enough? (= to the amount of ram you have installed)
Since this worked for awhile, what changed?
Did you install some new drivers, new bios or new hardware?
Might want to update the firmware of the ssd's
If you wish, you can try the newest bios: >>Beta BIOSes<< When used with the forum flash tool, it will update the me versions. Aftwards, you will need to re-install the me drivers.
Yes, it has worked, so partitions is OK. The strange thing is, that I have not changed drivers (oh yes, a driver for my  Nvidia graphic card, but that was after the error began, and only in Windows 7), no new BIOS settings I can remember of, no new hardware. It just started this about a week ago without I have changed anything. I have tried to reset BIOS, and load an earlier setup-profile of BIOS (my OC-settings), but that did not help.
Oh, BTW, I can't install Microsoft SDK tool as seen here:
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/177443-gathering-startup-shutdown-sleep-hibernate-reboot-trace.html
It begin install, but suddently under install, it starts to uninstall again without any error. I have an idea, that this tool might show me what is going on when starting IRS, but that might be a mistake?

  • Sneak Peek of MSI's Z77A-GD65 Motherboard :)

Here is a quick sneak peek of MSI's Z77A-GD65 motherboard. The board is intended for the upcoming Ivybridge 22nm processor which I think will be out this end of April. CPU socket is based on LGA 1155, so current Sandybridge Processors such as 2600k, 2500, 2300, etc… are still compatible. Other than this, the chipset natively supports USB 3.0 and PCI Express GEN3 lanes which can do both NVIDIA SLI and AMD CrossFireX. Running one video card is at x16, two at x8/x8 and three at x8/x4/x4.
With the release of MSI X79 motherboards a month ago. MSI introduced Military Class III Components. This consists of Solid Capacitors, Super Ferrite Chokes (better overclocking and power stability), Hi-C Caps and DrMOS II (higher power efficiency, double thermal protection). All these components have passed the MIL-STD-810G Standards giving the best durability, efficiency and overclock on MSI motherboards.
Moving on, here is the Z77 of MSI looks like. Black and Blue color themed motherboard and I pretty like what they have done with the heatsinks. The layout is clean and finally they moved the OC Genie, Reset and Power buttons on the upper right portion of the board. Much accessible especially when you are in a TRI-SLI video card configuration.
Some basic information on MSI Z77A-GD65:
    •Memory Support – 4x DDR3 DIMMs Support DDR3 2667/2400/2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 DRAM 32GB Max

I was able to test the motherboard using an Intel Core i7 2600K. Well it seems for me that the Z77 is more better in overclocking compared than the previous P67 and Z68 MSI models. Voltages are quite accurate too. It wasn’t hard for me reaching a 4.8GHz overclock on the said motherboard.
Below are two benchmark results using MSI Z77A-GD65 and the 2600k.
So that’s it for my share Hope you liked it guys

Quote from: xmad on 30-November-12, 09:49:07
I wouldn't get too tied up in benchmarking unless that is what you are going to be doing with your computer.  The -gd65 is MSI's 3rd best z77 motherboard, but it is also a bit older and has more bugs worked out.
One big strike against the gd65 is it's lack of a true hardware switch for it's multi bios. The -gd80 and mpower both have multi bios's with a true hardware switch, this come in very handy if you like to tinker and end up flashing bios allot or overclocking often where a corrupted bios is a possibility.
Just out of curiosity, what are the first and second best ?
So you say you never had issue of slow sata transfers ?

  • Z77A-GD65 Ethernet Problems "Network Cable Disconnected"

I've been running a Z77A-GD65 and have been having network problems with the onboard ethernet. Every time I go to play a game online I'll play for about 10-15 minutes and I'll be disconnected. When I'm back on the desktop, my ethernet icon on the taskbar will show "network cable disconnected" even though everything is plugged in fine. Fiddling with the cable or changing the cable does nothing. Reboot the machine and it's working fine until again I play a game for 10 or 15 minutes and the same thing happens.
First, the card was showing the wrong MAC address as specified in the MSI FAQ for this mobo. Performed the fix but the problem is persisting. Tried the MSI driver and the newer Intel one. One time I got a "Code 10" error as posted in another thread and again, wouldn't correct itself until I rebooted.
This only happens when I'm playing games. Web surfing or downloads work fine and my connection won't be disconnected until about 10-15 minutes into playing an online game.
I put in another discrete Intel network card and that worked fine. No problems. Same with plugging in a USB wifi adapter (my current temporary solution). Therefore, I'm thinking it's an issue with the onboard ethernet or driver. Anyone else with this problem or how to resolve it? Using the latest v10.5 MSI BIOS.

Removing the Asus Xonar did not help.
Re-flashed the BIOS as well using a DOS boot USB key instead of M-Flash. Readjusted all setting to default. Enabled/disabled "Network Stack" in the BIOS (what is this supposed to do anyhow? It's undocumented).
Wiped all drivers for this network adapter and re-installed the current ones from MSI's website. No change.
Noticed that the adapter would correctly run at gigabit full-duplex when set to auto-negitiate. However, it would drop down to 10mbps before it finally showed "cable disconnected". Plugging and unplugging the cable did nothing until I reboot, then it would work again... until I ran a game online and it would disconnect after 10-15 minutes of play. Ran the Intel cable test and it was fine (and the cable and internet has been fine when used in conjunction with another discrete PCI-e Intel card).
Re-crimped the ends to be sure. Tested again and the cable connection is good. Yes I know how to crimp ethernet so please don't suggest anything being wrong with the cable.
I've pretty well nailed down that it is an issue with the onboard ethernet. I've read on Intel forums about problems with this chip on Asus boards. Hopefully an MSI employee can point me in a direction that could help, or at least have the problem resolved in a future BIOS update.

  • Z77A-GD65 + Windows 7 = Freezing?

    Hello all!
I just got myself a brand new motherboard and processor and I have been having the worst time of my life getting these things to work properly. Long, long story short: I bought the Z77A-GD65 and Intel i5 3570K processor at Micro Center (over 45 minutes away). Got home it one of the two didn't work. Drove back to Micro Center and exchanged them. Came back and both worked... But Windows 7 would not install.
I finally got Windows 7 to install yesterday and have been dealing with freezing issues now. I have downloaded and installed all of the latest drivers off of MSI's website. I have ran Memtest (I have 12GB of RAM) all night and it passed 7 times with no errors. I have unplugged all SATA devices but the HDD I need. All Windows updates are installed. I checked my temps after a freeze and they are really low.
It seems to work just fine in Safe Mode (which is good... I guess...)
    Components:
    Intel i5-3570K
    MSI Z77A-GD65
    12 GB RAM (2x4GB Crucial, 2x2GB Vengeance)
    Windows 7 x64 SP1
    OCZ Power Supply @ 600W
I do not want to drive down to Micro Center again... It can't be the board, can it? Please help! I'm at my wits end. I just want to enjoy my new processor and motherboard!

Oh wow. So I did swap out the memory (so only the 2x4GB) and put it in DIMM2/4... But then I realized I had the Video Card plugged into the 2nd pci-e x16 slot, so I moved it up to the 1st one. So far it hasn't frozen... I was able to download Borderlands 2 (which wouldn't start downloading... Every time it would freeze).
I will report back by tomorrow if it works still. Seriously thank you xmad!

  • MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Motherboard Integrated Graphics

Hi i'm a newbie to computer parts and the computer world in general on what does what. I'm only 15 but i'm looking to upgrade my Mobo and CPU I have found a bundle (MSI Z77A-GD65 Intel 7 Series Z77 Motherboard and Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40 GHz Quad Core Unlocked Bundle) on tiger direct and it looks like a good deal. But before I buy it I WAS going to upgrade my GPU before I were to get a new Mobo and CPU. I've done some research on the MSI Z77A-GD65 and I saw it has integrated graphics, but I don't entirely know what that is. I was curious if that's a graphics card and if so what it compares to. I have a Nvidia GTX 9800 graphics card that's fairly old now and I was wondering if a Mobo with integrated graphics acted as a graphics card and if so what it would compare to. If you want to know anymore specs about my computer let me know and i'll be happy to give them out.

It's not the mainboard to have integrated graphics, it's the cpu. The Core i5-3570K has Intel HD Graphics 4000 integrated. The mainboard only offers the output connectors to use it. All current generation Intel cpus have integrated graphics which can be used or not. The HD Graphics 4000 is not meant for gaming of course and would perform worse than your GTX9800 in a 3d game. With a supported mainboard (like the Z77A-GD65) the integrated graphics can be used along the discrete vga for Lucid MVP to better performance and gaming experience (see for more details: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=160519.0).

Ok one more thing I should of said is I had the same problem with MSI p67a-gd65 b3 with the same voltages. I sold the p67 to my brother and the voltages are correct now. Could this be down to my Intel I5 or could it just be the bios needs updating.
