Z77a gd65 doesn't boot/power off

Hello,
I have a problem with my z77a gd65. It doesn't boot anymore. Each time I need to clear CMOS. Also when I do a shutdown or restart it doesn't respond anymore. (all leds on motherboard are off except the first one of the CPU_PHASE leds). Shutdown or restart have the same effect when i try them in windows or bios, even the buttons on the board have the same results. Only the fans keep spinning. It doesn't power off anymore, I need to unplug the power cord.
It has worked for over 2 months, it just happened yesterday. I haven't installed or changed anything that day.
I haven't overclocked the mainboard.
I tried the latest BIOS version, but this didn't solved the problem
I removed all other hardware (videocard, hdd, dvd,...) but still same problem
Any suggestions

Hi pmec, got any further with this issue? I have a similar/the same problem with the same mobo.
I have the same LED error number, though mine did it straight away on the first boot.
I don't think the RAM is faulty as it is a set of 4 sticks and I've tried all of them on their own in slot 1 (though I guess it might be that the whole batch was faulty).
I also tried booting without any RAM at all to see if it behaved exactly the same, but there is a slight difference, I'm not sure if it means anything.
When there IS a stick in, the display jumps very quickly to showing '55' after the power is pressed then runs for a few seconds and reboots.
When there ISN'T a stick in, the display jumps quickly to showing '22' (iirc, I'm at work atm) then a couple of seconds later moves on to '55' before it reboots.
Maybe you could see if you get the same behaviour with no memory sticks in, I don't know what it would mean but it might help more knowledgeable people here to narrow down the problem?
If not maybe it's a different issue...

Z77A-GD65 Win7 64bit boot fail followingMSI Live Update 5 Firmware update

Hi,
For some reason I decided to have a go with MSI Live Update 5 auto update today (having not used it previously in the 1.5years I've owned this system.
Running in Win 7 64 bit, it performed an 'update' and then the system completely crashed (as in turned off and on again). On reboot the system only went as far as the BIOS flash screen.
It failed to boot form the SSD boot drive and a message saying "Reboot with Proper Boot Drive".
I booted into BIOS (version 10.11) and the boot drive is still recognised.
I tried a reboot and the same error.
I tried to boot backup within BIOS and saw a message flash that ended with "Failed to initialize MSI-X".
None of the MSI applications work, it doesn't boot into Windows and I'm stuck.
Can anyone suggest how I might be able to get Windows back and running without having to do a full reinstall? I can't seem to get the backup software to work now so I'm a bit stuck. If I try and do a full flash of the drive and start again, will it fix the issue or is the problem with the motherboard/bios setup?
Has anyone else had this problem?

Intel i7-3770k 3.5Ghz

OK, so I found a few people on Tom's Hardware message board that seem to have the same issue with this latest BIOS update from MSI so at least it's not just me.
I reset CMOS
I set BIOS to default
I downloaded the BIOS ME from an older version 10.8 of BIOS that I knew worked fine (from another computer)
Flashed BIOS with USB
Booted the system with Win7 64 OEM CD
Selected Repair Mode
Let it do its thing
I'm back in business from where I left off.
Won't be touching the BIOS update again unless I can be absolutely sure its going to be stable on my MB.
RE: Legacy and UEFI
After installing 10.11, it defaulted to UEFI only but I changed the setting to Legacy and UEFI. It didn't fix the issue though.
I've rolled back, it works again so I'm happy other than the fact I've lost almost a full day of work over it.

I'm trying to boot my pc but for some reason doesn't work.
Board: MSI Z77A-GD65 ver. 2.1
Bios: ? (I do not know because I never get into the bios)
VGA: XFX ATI HD 5770 1Gb (tested with and without)
PSU: Corsair GS600 (CMPSU-600G)
Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7-3770K 3.5Ghz 8MB LGA1155 BX80637I73770K (tested and ok)
MEM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz - CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10 (tested with and without)
HDD: 2x Western WD10EARS 1TB Green (tested with and without)
COOLER: Cooler master V6 GT and intel stock cooler (tested both)
OC: none
OS: none
When I turn on my pc, LED1 lights up and after 5 secs restarts. When is restarting, two another leds blinks, one near multi-bios swtich and the other near JFP1.
No code appear on the debug display.
Any ideas?

1: possibly bad or incompatible memory so what memory you using?
2: what PSU do you have as it may just be that there isn't enougth power to fuel the machine (give us the +12V rail/s rating/s)?
3: have you connected the 8pin CPU power header and is it fully seated?
4: have you tried the board outside of your case on a non conductive surface?
5: have you checked the CPU socket to see if any of the small connection pins are bent with a bright light and a magnifier as thats a common problem?

Help!!! Z77A-GD65 will not boot!

Hi guys, I've been running the following setup since may without any fault at all until last night. I don't really overclock at all, only used OC Genie a few times.
MB: MSI Z77A-GD65
CPU: Intel i5 3570K
CPU COOLER: Corsair H60
GPU: MSI N560GTX-Ti
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Blue 4gb modules x 4 @ 1600mhz
PSU: Corsair TX650w
SSD: Samsung 830 128gb x 2
Tower: Corsair Carbide 500R
OS: Windows 7 64 Bit
DD: Samsung Blu-Ray
It won't boot in either BIOS, the code that stays constant on the debug led is 37. The whole fan system turns on, including the hydro cooler and gpu fans. You turn the system on and the cpu power flow led's flicker until they settle at just led's 1 and 2. The alarm led never turns on. Nothing comes on the screen, yet the monitor senses a signal. Any ideas what could be the culprit here??? My last MSI mobo has been running since 2003 so I'm kind of stumped here... By what I've read it could be the power supply, but I'm stumped... Please help!

Swap out the discrete graphics card and try with the onboard. Remove the power cord, remove the battery for awhile, clear CMOS, if it will now get in the UEFI/BIOS, reset boot order and other settings, retest. I believe the 37 is the CPU temp reading beginning with some of the newer BIOS releases? Monitor or VGA might be the culprit.

Z77a-gd65 stuck at boot?

Hey there, I have a z77a-gd65, I run the v10.0 bios on bios 1, I switched to bios2, and used the msi flashing tool usb thing on here on the forums and the v10.11 I think, 7751vAB.zip to be exact, and it flashed fine, all went well, can enter bios settings etc etc.. but then when it gets to booting phase, it hangs (led screen on mobo shows 38, no idea what that means), and it just sits there. and I tried disabling all booting options and set my Samsung evo 840 as the boot where I have windows installed, it hung for maybe 30 seconds then said insert proper boot media like it would if there was no data on the drive, so I panicked and switched to bios 1.. all is working well nothings changed at all.
So it must be something to do with the latest bios update?
I have a 2500k, z77a-gd65, 16gb corsair xms.
I did all the steps and guides id found, bios 2 was default at flash infact id never used bios 2 ever, but it booted fine etc, also this board is only 3 months old if less, but I just wanted to see if anything was new in the new bios.
So what do I do with bios 2 now?

iv fixed it, I updated to 10.8 bios and it boots, wouldn't boot with 10.10 or 10.11 though.
In this bios, I cant changed my cpu multiplyer on the standard settings though, I have to use the rubbish oc genie to overclock? and under load, before I used 4.5ghz 45x multiplyer. Im at that using the genie custom settings, but under load it drops to 44x for some reason, any idea why?

Z77A-GD65 no longer boots with 4 RAM modules

I had 4 x 8GB Cosair Vengeance LP that used to work fine, but no longer boots into Windows with 4 but only with 2 RAM modules. Any help in solving the issue would be appreciated. ( I need 32 GB as I run many virtual machines )
The 4 modules worked fine for few months until couple weeks ago, when I saw issues with booting into Windows 7. The workaround was to "warm up" by leaving the PC in BIOS for about 5 minutes and it would boot fine. Since couple days ago, it would POST but not boot into Windows or into live Linux on USB, so I started troubleshooting with bare bones first ( MB, CPU, 1 RAM, PS ) and then starting adding more and more components until I found that 1 and 2 RAM modules worked in either black or blue rail but with 4 RAM modules, it will POST, but not boot at all into either USB based live system or into Windows 7.
Memtest with 2 separate sets of modules pass with flying colors. Mixing the sets work fine too, but add 2nd set (i.e. 4 modules) and it fails to boot. I am leaning more toward believing the issue is with the MB than with the RAM since mixing them doesn't throw any memory error.
Any suggestion on how to check if it's the RAM or MB ?

As to voltage, I started with standard 1.5 and then incrementally upped it to 1.65v. At 1.6v and above, it does boot into Windows, but intermittently goes into BSOD... Works perfect with 1.5v with 2 RAM modules.

ATV doesn't actually power off? In standby mode HDMI and Toslink active?

I've setup my ATV to live on an active signal sensing HDMI and Optical audio router. I'm amazed to now find that the only way of killing the HDMI and optical outputs are to power the ATV off? Putting the unit into standby keeps those output ports active. Anyone find a way around this?

It's a 'feature' !
Standby just outputs black video, and device remains awake monitoring for communications from iTunes to allow syncing when it's in 'standby'.

Z77A-GD65 primary bios corruped and can't restore it!!

Hi guys, last weekend was happened a very strange thing ... i used my pc with MSI mb Z77A-GD65 regulary Saturday and power off without any problem,
Yesterday i power on my PC and doesn't work, MB starts with coolers but no P.O.S.T sound error and only black screen, i try to reset bios .. nothing, i switch to secondary bios and immediatly works!
Then pc runs fine.
So I re-flash the primary bios and the procedure ends without no problem, i re-switch to primary bios and again not works like the beginning ... i try other re-flash to primary bios but same story!
So finaly Pc works only if i switch to secondary bios, primary bios not work though i re-flashed bios .......what's up? is primary bios flash eprom damage... without any apparent problem?
All of 2 bios primary and secondary have the lasted MSi Z77A-GD65 Bios ver. 10.8

Hi, thanks for reply, i try every version of bios, i try to flash by Multibios flash tool under Bios, and by standard procudure, boot with 2nd bios with bootdisk,, than switch to primary bios and flash under dos..no way !!, primary bios don't want to boot up!
What is strange is every time i try to update primary bios with M-flash Multibios flash tool and by dos command, only secondary bios updated not the primary one!!... its seems that primary bios flash memory no longer exists .. i think that primary bios flash memory has been damaged for incomprehensible fact ...

Z77A-GD65 and SSD Crucial M4 512 gb doesn't recognize on boot

Hi all, i bought a SSD crucial M4 512 gb and connected to my Z77A-GD65, i set it on bios as AHCI mode and have the lasted firmware of my Z77A-GD65 vers. 10.5 and cricual m4 lasted firmware 000F.
when i connect the power cord and start my pc, on boot SSD not recognize, boot hangs on A2 status for 10 seconds, then boot without recognize M4, if i push reset button, no way to recognize.
the only way to work, is to power off pc, leave the power cord and reconnect immediatly and power up the pc, then on boot M4 will recognize perfectly, what is it this problem? i search on internet and i found that other have the same unsolved problem with other mainboard, not with MSI Mb, MSi can help me?, this is my system:

Z77a-gd65 hangs on bios screen and also doesn't boot

i7 3770k
MSI GTX 670
2x8GB 1300 memory.
I cannot get into the bios. If I hook the monitor to the gtx 670, I can get it to display the msi bios screen "temperature, boot device priority" but that's it. There's no data, no temperature, just like it put the bios image up and then hung.
Right after hitting the cmos button, I get the following:

It doesn't seem to let me hit "f1 to setup" or "f2 to continue" with a ps2 keyboard.
If I boot from the cd to try and install winki, there's some info that flashes too fast to see but its to the choice of install, and then whatever option I choose, it will display a clear screen with the logo and eventually the screen goes black with a blinking cursor.
If I boot from a usb linux drive I have, it again goes through the boot choices, and then the screen goes black a few seconds in. Doing this I think I got the mainboard leds to display "ff" otherwise they display either "00" or "ad" or "ae".
The monitor is apple monitor through an adc to dvi adapter. I've used this for years on an ati radeon on a p4 windows setup so it shouldn't be a problem but... if I hook the monitor directly to the mainboard onboard video, the bios screen graphics stop hanging open, the screen just immediately goes black.
I've tried clearing the bios with the button, switching the multibios, and jumpering the cmos with the power off.
I have not tried flashing the bios, I was thinking about doing that through winki but it won't load.

I tried just one stick of ram in a different slot but no difference.
And as in my first post I tried the onboard a bit but it was about the same. Actually I forgot what I tried, I just now tried the apple cinema display to the onboard video card and unpowered the gtx 670 without taking it off the board and the display doesn't come on at all.
I think that was what it was last time I tried the onboard, that I thought it might be something about the adc-dvi converter. But it works besides.
Why would it be able to get to the boot choice screen but not the bios though? The PSU has a 7 year warranty, its probably decent, manual says 62.4a +12v .8a -12v
One other thing, if this matters. The first two blue lights are always on on the motherboard, the voltage indicators or whatever, but when it tries to load winki, the other blue lights blink. And right now, with the monitor on the onboard, all the lights are on. But the monitor isn't.
Also, do you need a mouse plugged in, that probably wouldn't make a difference, I think I've tried that as well.

Z77A-GD65 power issue/bad system board?

Looking for advice. I am afraid its a bad board, but some symptoms point at power which also makes no sense.
This is what the WHOLE system should look like.

It seems to me that 620W should be more than enough. According to my calculations thats roughly 330W of power draw against a 620W powersupply.
I am not currently over clocking.
So what the system does look like is:
If I connect the 500GB drive then windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I place all four sticks of RAM in the system windows starts rebooting as soon as the Windows logo comes up.
If I leave the 500GB standard sata drive off and only use 3 sticks of RAM... well we get a solid system and I am writing this message on it.
3 sticks of ram appear to work in any 3 slots and allow the system to boot, except 1,3,4. That combo also resulted in the reboots at the windows logo.
I first thought it was RAM, originally I was using Corsair Vengeance. I saw some posts here about people having the same problem, and noted that the Corsiar RAM was not tested and switch to a the tested G.Skill instead.
Any ideas? It does not completely seem like a System board issue, but it certainly should not be power. All heat levels are well within normal and as I said the system works great if I leave off the drive and one stick of RAM.

System torn down, and put back together. (Found out I was out of Thrermal Compound, so I had to run to the store to get some.)
No long leads, only 9 stand offs matching each mount point on the systemboard.
Back together... problem is the exact same.
However, back to the hard drive issue. I decided to play with that since I was getting no where with 4 sticks of RAM.
What I have discovered is that with NO sata cable connecting the drive to the system board, if I try to power the two 250GB standard sata drives the system reboots just as the Windows logo should come up.
The fact that this behavior is so close to the RAM behavior... I am back to thinking its a power issue, though system board is still a chance... its just easier to buy a new better power supply than the Antec Neo Power 620 that came with the case. (I have not ever had a problem with Antec before, and will likely just buy one of their higher end power supplies to replace it, but I think I will try it next, just in case.)
I am not seeing any strange behavior power wise as far as any monitor shows... but connecting power to a sata drive that is NOT connected with a sata cable and causing a reboot just screams power at me.
Anymore thoughts today. In the mean time off to play Secret World with just the SSD and two sticks of RAM, which still runs rock solid.

Z77A-GD65 with i3 3220 Will not boot

Building new Z77A-GD65 with i3 3220 cpu 16G memory, 650w power supply and it will not boot. It starts to boot and lights all the LEDs green, FF appears in Multi BIOs it shuts off after a few seconds then tries to boot again and again repeating. MSI RMA replaced the mobo and installed Bios 10.7 and it still will not boot.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Boot issue with Z77A-GD65

I have a Z77A-GD65 board with 16GB of DDR3 RAM (4x4GB DIMMS) and an I5 Ivy Bridge CPU, Samsung 830 128GB SSD and 2x 4TB HDD's.
Last night my system was working perfectly. Today it won't boot into an OS.
When I would power up the system this morning, it started went through the Intel Matrix RAID BIOS fine then did a few status codes in the bottom right and ended up on A2 as the current code and sat there forever... I let it set for 15 minutes about no change.
I pulled the HDD's and SSD off first, same code
I pulled the USB and ethernet now the code changed to D0 still nothing, just hangs there.
I switched the BIOS switch to the second one, same result.
I pulled the BIOS battery and power and let it sit for a while, plugged it back in and put the battery back in... same result..
What's going on? I'm not sure where to go nor do I know the exact meaning of the codes given

Cannot Boot Z77A-GD65 w/ASMedia SATA Ports Enabled

Hey all. I saw one older thread with no answers posted in it but I'm hoping someone here knows a solution to this. I'm running a Z77A-GD65 with the latest 10.11 BIOS. I current have an SSD (which has Windows on it), a 1TB HDD for games and two other 3TB drives on eSATA ports. I want to add in another 1TB drive and RAID 0 it with the current one but in order to do this and keep everything else, I had to enable the ASMedia 7/8 SATA ports on the board which I previously wasn't using. I moved my two eSATA connectors onto those ports, put my SSD on SATA1. As long as the ASMedia ports are enabled, my system will not boot. The BIOS gives the error that it can't find an OS on my SSD (even though it does detect properly and is selected as the primary boot device.) Trying to select the SSD by pressing F11 gives the same result. As soon as I disable the ASMedia ports again, the system boots fine.
Basically, the system is rendered useless with the ASMedia ports enabled. Some people say they can boot off of those but the performance is apparently very bad so I'm not prepared to do that. It makes no sense that enabling another controller that has nothing to do with the Intel one breaks that but there we have it.
Is there a solution to this problem? I'm not going to be at all pleased if I have to buy a separate SATA card when I have one on the board that can't be used. Thanks all!

I resolved the problem by deleting the ASMedia drivers and using Device Mgr to "Update Drivers / Browse My Computer" and selecting the Microsoft default drivers. So far my 1 TB Seagate drive is running fine with my CD/DVD Combo on the other port. I don't know if there will be issues if I connect two HDD to the ASMedia ports or not. I thought I would post this in case it would help someone else having issues. I haven't ran any benchmarks for performance but it seems fairly snappy when copying files from my SSD to the HDD.
BTW, I am ditching my EVGA 680 SLI for a new MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G which will be here tomorrow. It matches my motherboard color scheme and layout perfectly. I am really looking forward to seeing that lighted dragon logo inside my PC's window. I am hoping this MSI video board serves me as well as my EVGA boards have in the past.
EDIT: I spoke too soon. After copying several folders to the Seagate drive my PC froze up. Keyboard and mouse were unresponsive and it required a hard restart. I tried switching ports for the mouse and the light only flickered briefly when I plugged it in. The Seagate drive is working fine on my free Intel SATA port. I have abandoned the notion of running 3 Samsung drives in a RAID array because benchmarks show a performance drop off. Two SSD in RAID_0 seem to be best for optimum performance. I'm still looking forward to my new MSI video board. Maybe this mobo needs RMA? Maybe power issues with the ASMedia SATA ports? IDK, I need to RMA sooner or later because one of the BIOS is fried.
