Z77A-GD65 Multiple BIOS Issues - B4 Hang, Splash Screen Blinking

Back in November 2012, I built a home server with a Z77A-GD65.  Lately, I've noticed some strange things happening that I've been trying to research but to no avail.
First off, I get the B4 code hang-up whenever I'm booting.  This doesn't matter if it's a cold boot or a reboot, it hangs on B4 for about 10-15 seconds, flashes 92 really quick, and then goes to A2 which it stays for another 5 or so seconds.  After that I get the MSI splash screen for about 1 second, then it blinks 5 times.  After that it goes into Windows just fine.
The blinking is a new issue, the B4 hang is not.  I've read from multiple posts that this is a USB issue.  When I disable USB legacy support, the issue goes away, but of course then I can't have legacy support.  I have yet to figure out what exact device is causing it.  In the process of trying to figure this out, I updated BIOS to A.A0.  After updating to this version of BIOS the splash screen blinks 5 times before going to the "Starting Windows" splash screen.  This is a more difficult issue to figure out why it's doing this because if you search for "BIOS" and "flash" or "flashes" or "flashing", you typically get results for flashing your BIOS.   Hence, why I'm using the term "blinking".  But even then I can't really find a solution out there.
I also happened to see that the website for the Z77A-GD65 is showing a newer BIOS version, but I'm unable to flash this (at least using M-Flash).  I threw it on a USB, re-enabled USB legacy and whenever I click on it to install, the BIOS screen hard locks.  The screen just freezes exactly where it's at in the BIOS and the mouse is dead.  However, I can CTRL+ALT+DEL on the keyboard and it will reboot the system so I don't need to power cycle the computer.  Not sure why this is happening either.  Perhaps I need to flash this a different way?  Maybe I don't need to flash this at all?
I could really use some input here on why this is happening.
As for the specs on my system, they're as follows:
i7-3770K overclocked to 4.2 Ghz by using the Turbo Mode in BIOS
32GB Komputerbay DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz DIMM with Low Profile Blue Heatspreaders Quad Channel RAM | 9-9-9-24 XMP ready
AMD PowerColor 7870 Myst Edition GPU - currently not overclocked although overclocking this doesn't seem to affect any issues
2 - 128 GB Corsair SATA III SSD - one runs the OS, the other I use to load games from
2 - 500 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM Sata II HDD's mirrored via Windows 7
1 - 750 GB Seagate Barracude 7200 RPM Sata II HDD
1 - 1 TB Western Digital MyBook USB 2.0 external
2 - 3 TB Seagate USB 3.0 external
ASUS DVD Burner - not sure which one, it's a cheapy $20 from Newegg
1 - PCI USB 3.0 expansion card
Antec TruePower New TP-550 Modular 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7/Core i5" Power Supply
NZXT Switch 810 gunmetal - currently have 4 fans running but plan on more, also the Switch 810 has the multi-card reader in the front with 1x SD Card, 2x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.0
for peripherals
1 - Microsoft 360 Wireless controller adapter (legit one, not the knockoff although I had a knockoff prior to getting the real deal)
1 - Logitech Wireless USB Keyboard with Touchpad
I tried to be thorough.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Probably a USB device problem.
This is a candidate, as well as mouse and keyboard. Disconnect USB devices one at a time to find the culprit.
A lot of devices running. PSU a +12V single rail or is it multi rail? A rail going to the graphics or components may not be enough amps. My best guess is the card reader.
For UEFI/BIOS flashing, select your mainboard here and use the forum flash method;
I'll definitely try unplugging some of these USB devices to see if that helps with the B4 hang issue.
As for the PSU, according to the description for it on Newegg:  "Four industry-leading independent +12v rails are provided for more stable and safer power output."  It has two rails going to the GPU.  The GPU is a new addition to the system and so I wasn't running it until recently.  The issues were occurring beforehand, but you're right that this PSU is underpowered for the rig considering PowerColor recommends a minimum of 500w.  I'm going to be buying a larger capacity one sometime in the very near future.  Any recommendations on good modular PSU's?  What's a good way to tell what wattage to get?
Thanks for letting me know about the forum flash method.  I'll be back later when I have some results.

  • Z77A-GD65 - Dual BIOS Issue

Hey guys, I believe there is an issue with the Dual BIOS feature on my board.
During some OC tests and changes, I experienced the following with my board:
    1. I applied OC settings which caused the PC not to boot.
    2. I switched to the second BIOS and the PC didn't boot - At this point, I should have been able to boot the PC with the second BIOS but nothing happened.
    3. I cleared the CMOS by removing the battery, the PC booted fine.
    4. I went into one BIOS, reapplied my old OC settings and the PC booted up fine again.
    5. I switched to the second BIOS again to see if it was on default, to my surprise, it had the exact same settings as the second BIOS.
    6. So today I tested again, I switched to the secondary BIOS and loaded optimized defaults on it, guess what? The PC didn't boot at ALL! On defaults!
    7. Switched to the second BIOS, and again, no boot.
    8. Removed the Battery again, both BIOSes reset to default.
    9. Reapplied my old OC settings again on one BIOS, PC booted up.
    10. Switched back to the secondary BIOS = SAME SETTINGS!
At this point, I have no backup BIOS, any change I set changes it for both of them, when I move the switch all settings are completely identical.
Either I killed one of the BIOS chips and they both act as one or my board is defective and it is not switching between them.
    How's this possible?!

What ever solution you choose to cure the problem you should also notify the manufacturer so they can redesign the back plate, include spacers or whatever is needed in the future. Possibly they can offer a fix for you. I'm pretty sure they would be more than willing to make a happy customer out of you.
I would use some nylon washers of some kind from a hobby shop or hardware store if it was mine provided there was enough space between the back of the MB and the case for it. Otherwise as you say trimming the back plate would be the only other way to do it.

Hi, did you try flashing with M-flash Multibios flash tool under Bios?
If it doesn't work with 10.8 you need to downgrade it to 10.5 using MSI HQ USB BIOS Flash Tool, dont use the M-flash when downgrading Bios.
Then after you have 10.5 Bios use the Multibios option under your Bios, and it should work fine.
Hi, thanks for reply, i try every version of bios, i try to flash by Multibios flash tool under Bios, and by standard procudure, boot with 2nd bios with bootdisk,, than switch to primary bios and flash under dos..no way !!, primary bios don't want to boot up!
What is strange is every time i try to update primary bios with M-flash Multibios flash tool and by dos command,  only secondary bios updated not the primary one!!... its seems that primary bios flash memory no longer exists .. i think that primary bios flash memory has been damaged for incomprehensible fact ...

  • Z77A-GD65 + GTX780Ti = BIOS error 99

Posted this on someone elses thread, apologies:
'Im having a similar problem, i have had a Z77a-GD65 with a GTX 670 windforce X3 card working for over a year, got the GTX 780Ti last night, removed the 670 and replaced with the 780Ti, all of a sudden getting error codes, removed all graphics cards getting error code 99, stripped down to no HDD, 1 stick of different RAM no graphics (except intel 3770K onboard graphics) and still cant get past error 99.
I have tried and reset both CMOS, removed battery etc, makes no difference.
I have a 600W PSU as recommended, has this combo fried my motherboard, as replacing my GTX670 now does not fix the problem, so Im really in trouble.  I only have a spare laptop so mo way to tyest any individual parts out.'
The advice was to update BIOS, Im not sure how to do that if I cant boot the machine, any ideas?

Unfortunately using onboard graphics also produces error code 99, its impossible to get to the BIOS, even with the MOBO on my desk with just CPU and RAM, still get error code 99 on the MOBO post code readout.  Is there any way to bypass error codes and get to BIOS?
Something seemed fundamentally broken so I got a cheaper MSI Z77MA-G45, put it all together and everything works perfectly, even the GTX780Ti, perhaps my old MOBO just failed.  Im pretty disappointed though as it was only 18 months old.

  • Z77A-G43 GAMING Bios Issue

Hey all, i'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue or any suggestions for repair. My motherboard is just over a year old and it seems the bios has packed in on me. I don't want to chuck it because I do like this board with my hardware configuration. Before I go any further I would like to say it is definitely a corrupt bios issue and sadly this board only has the one so I cant swap to bios 2. So my question is this: is there a way to flash the bios without being able to POST? The computer currently cycles through the power up process and shuts down after about 1 second which starts again after about 5 seconds and repeats this pattern until I pull the plug.
Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Quote
Well, I had several problems with the machine over the past few days, The computer keeps failing to post and so I reset the bios as per the manual and all was well again but as soon as I restart the pc, I get the exact same problem. no post and have to reset the bios. This went on for several attempts at rebooting until now it just wont boot and resetting the bios isn't working. I know all other aspects of the setup are working because I have tested them so its the only logical conclusion.
if the computer worked before like you said a year + with the same BIOS,
and you didn't change anything to the BIOS before this happens
then its not BIOS issue, BIOS can't broke by itself

Is there no way to get the board to copy a new bios from USB stick or something?
placing the BIOS stick over USB key
but i don't think that will makes any difference

  • Audition 2.0 Startup Issues/Frozen at Splash Screen

Had a production worker come to me today noting that 2.0 was not stating up.
It is freezing on the splash screen.
Process shows Adobe at 50% and Sys Idle at 50%.
I can start and run any other program with no issues.
I uninstalled and reinstalled only to return to the same issue.
I also installed Audtion 1.5 and it runs fine.
Has anyone experianced anything similar or does anyone perhaps have an idea where I might start to look in order to resolve this?
It's run problem free for I don't know how long, one year plus.
I did have a NexGen issue today with the sound card, but donot see that as being linked in anyway.
Though I suppose it is curious that both picked today to fail.
Same sound card as before, nothing physical was swapped out, just reinstalled the driver.

Maybe try deleting the presets/preferences (after backing them up)

  • Z77A-GD65 Gaming BIOS Update Problem

An update to version 25.1 just appeared and when I tried to run it I got an error message saying it's incompatible with 64 bit Windows. This wasn't an issue with 25.0 and there wasn't anything on the download site about the new one being 32 bit only. Has anyone else tried to install this on a 64 bit system ? Because I've been getting some unusual error messages lately and I'm not sure if the problem is with the download or something on my system. Thanks

I was hoping you saw my reply before you tried that other ME firmware update, as your ME was updated already. The ME firmware and driver are different entities, and they have different version numbers that do not match. That is not a problem.
All you need to do is look in the UEFI/BIOS System Information and it will tell you what BIOS version is installed along with what ME firmware is installed. When in Windows, you can use CPUID's CPU-Z Mainboard Tab and it too will show the information. Again, the forum flash method took care of the ME firmware flash. There is no need to go through all that multiple flashing baloney. Too much risk involved if for no other reason.
Did you download the newest CC utility yet? If still no luck, a ticket to MSI is recommended so they can work on an updated version for your mainboard.

  • Z77A-GD65 Buggy bios Version 10.10

    Hello All
I recently got this motherboard and during a bios update through MSI tool M-Flash I faced similar problems as some users reported in other post: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=171694.0
I have made the registration on the forum to share a solution that worked out for me.
I received the board on Bios 10.0, and  I installed a Core i7 2600k and 16Gb DDR3 2133Mhz on it. First I run it without any PCI-Ex VGA.
I installed Win 7 64bits Ultimate on a SSD samsung EVO 840 256GB drive without any other drive pluged to the board.
The result was awsome, loading Windows in 10 seconds.
Then i instaled my HD6950 VGA and pluged in all my HDD (2 x 2TB + 1TB +750 MB + 500 MB) and every thing worked like a charm.
Later I thought, I have a very old Bios version, perhaps there is improvements regarding satbility or performance and there was where I mess up.
I updated the Bios to 10.10 through MSI tool M-Flash, the tool finalized the update (there was a progressing bar on the screen) and reboots the system.
Guess what? The system didn't boot and was only showing the hash blinking on the up left corner of the screen.
I switch the Multibios switch to the second bios position and the system got alive again.
After some trys, I was able to boot from the USB drive from where I have installed the OS, and i notice some strange cenario, the Windows installer was able to "see" all the drives, but if I select any one to go on with the instalation, I got a message like "The Windows can not be installed on this drive because a driver is missing" I'm not sure if these were the exactly words but this was the sense of the message.
This was the way I didi it:
1- you need get a good bios file (you can boot with 2nd bios and save it to a file or you can download a diferente version in my case I got the file for 10.8 version). When you download the bios from MSI webpage you get 3 files (7750vAx.TXT, AFUD238S.EXE and E7751IMS.A80 in case of version 10.8)
2- You need to prepare a bootable USB drive with MS DOS or equivalente, for that I have used "rufus-1.4.12" software that you can download on Rufus webpage.
3- After you create the bootable USB drive with MS DOS, copy all the files you got from MSI webpage on the root directory. You can check on a diferente PC or with the other bios if every thing is ok and if the bootable USB is working properlly.
4- Select the BIOS you want to restore with Multibios switch (the phisical switch on the board). (As far as I understood, older boards allows you to boot with bios 1 and after boot you would be able to switch to bios 2 and flash it, on this borad that won't work you will flash the bios from you have booted).
5- Power on your system, entrer the bios and set options to default, save and power off the system. (this is very importante because you can flash a diferente bios with diferente options and if this options won't exists on the version you are instaling the system can hang up and mayby this could be the end for this bios - I'm guessing but is better not to try)
6- disconnect all your sata drives.
7 - Power on the system and boot from the USB drive with MS DOS
8 - Type the folowing comand "AFUD238S.EXE E7751IMS.A80 /S" and press Enter, the software will do a full flash to the bios. Don't power off the system during this procedure otherwise this bios is dead.
8 - After every thing have finished (you should see the promt on the screen C:>\), reboot your system and you should get a functional bios, justo ensure you test it first only with the OS drive and then plug the others.
Note: This board has a multibios function on the Bios that if it is turned on the system will copy the content of one bios chip to the other, BUT, as far as i understood the system wil do a comparison between both chips and will replace the older version with the new one, that in my case would be a problema because the most recente one is the faulty one.
I hope this can help any one who is facing this or similar problems.
    Best Regards from Portugal.

  • Z77A-GD65 Multi bios switch

any information of this function? I have a lot of confuse of this
e.g. when I switch to roms B, the modified bios setting also in roms A.
can I use this switch to boot my MB to difference bios version with OC setting
or this switch only for bios recovery

Its meant for BIOS recovery. If one BIOS fails, then the other one can be used.
If you want to save OC settings, then that is accomplished in the BIOS. You should have 5 or 6 user profiles that you can save.

  • [Z77A-GD65] latest bios with ME?

    Hi
I was just looking at updating my bios, a82 which was provided to me from a tech support ticket didn't update the ME firmware, so was looking at bringing both the bios and ME up to date.
The bios thread for this board mentions a83 is the latest beta bios but doesn't mention that it includes the ME update. Also is the a83 bios more up to date than the a80 official release, I'm guessing so but just like to check?
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=163874.0

I'm having some difficulty in getting this flash (A80 official) to commit.
I've tried a couple of times using the forum flasher tool (version 1.25g) which doesn't give any feedback of any errors. However, after resetting the CMOS and rebooting it only shows the bios version to have changed to 10.8 and the build date 12/17/2012 but the ME firmware version has remained unchanged.
Reading the forum flasher tool instructions it mentions that boot sector protection could be the cause of this but I don't see an option for that in the bios.  Is the 'Execute Disable Bit' in the CPU features section the same thing?
Also, the forum flasher tool upon completion gives the option to reboot but I understood that the CMOS was to be reset so should the user answer no to rebooting and then power off system and then reset CMOS or should this be done after an initial reboot?
An option called 'PCH-FW' also crept into the bios at some stage that seems to relate to the ME firmware recovery, should this be set to disabled?
