Z77A-GD65 with 3770k & Kingston HyperX 2666mhz ratio stuck between 16&39

Hello all, its been a while since i was last on the forum (and never on intel side lol).
I upgraded my PC from an AMD 1100t msi 990fxa-gd65 to a I7-3770k on a z77a-gd65.
Now all was working well from the start, i was able to overclock the RAM using the XMP profile both 1 and 2 (1= 2666mhz 2=2400mhz) and i was able to set a FIXED overclock of the CPU up to 4.6 stable.
However i wanted more, just because my friends kept telling me it could do it. So i attempted 4.8ghz but with little success, (only 2400mhz RAM and wasnt happy with temps (90c)).
So i thought maybe a bios update was in order, so i updated to A70 and began overclock attempts again. Now it let me have a good day of using the multiplier, first at x45 then x46 and so on to x48 (where it was unstable). Now after many attempts it no longer allows me to use a multiplier beyond x39. However the turbo will allow me to go up to x60.
I have attempted using the reset CMOS button on the rear of the case, loading defaults within BIOS, reflashing older versions of the BIOS (back to A5 which is newer than the original). Non have worked, has anyone else run into this issue.

You should already start to save some bucks because you're going to "upgrade" the PC again.
And very soon.
How come? what is coming?

Your friends neglected to tell you that you needs some pretty serious cooling for that amount of OC on an Ivy CPU.
The fact that your BIOS multi is inhibited but the turbo multi still allows to set anything up to X60 may indicate a problem with the BIOS itself. Have you tried a full CMOS clear with battery removal ?
Did you update the ME firmware at the same time?
If it is the -GD65, have you tried the second BIOS by manually switching to it. That should still have your old BIOS, unless you flashed both.
Don't worry we already decided to get one of the best air coolers Noctua NH-D14.
However In you reply i see you mention the ME firmware, I haven't as i did not know what it was (i thought it best not to touch it unless i knew what it was).
Also i'll whip out a GPU and do a battery pull for the CMOS then use the secondary bios if that fails. As i haven't flashed both (unless they get done at the same time.)
lol just noticed my signature, it really has been a long time since i was last on. although i only just sold that PC off :D

  • Z77a-gd65 i7-3770k will not drop multiplier when idle windows 8

New to the forums here!  my setup is a z77a-gd65 i7-3770k with windows 8, and recently i've had a weird issue where no matter what my cpu stays at a constant x39 multiplier according to CPU-Z (version 1.63.0.x64).  i've tried just setting all BIOS settings to default to no avail.  Then I tried a simple turbo clocking method where I set all 4 core limits to 40 just to test, kept c1e and cstate options enabled, disabled speedstep, enabled enhanced turbo, and used xmp profile for memory, all other things default, and it's still stuck at x39 according to cpuz.  Is there anything else I should check?
I basically want a simple oc for now where it idles at x16 and goes up to xwhatever when the cpu is being used.  i just find it weird that after messing with some settings the multiplier never changes.
    Thanks for your help!

Just set those to default then set it to balanced. If it throttles you know it is the settings.
Otherwise, you might want to try updating to the most recent bios. >>Beta BIOSes<<
I'll give that a shot after work and report back

Building new Z77A-GD65 with i3 3220 cpu 16G memory, 650w power supply and it will not boot. It starts to boot and lights all the LEDs green, FF appears in Multi BIOs it shuts off after a few seconds then tries to boot again and again repeating. MSI RMA replaced the mobo and installed Bios 10.7 and it still will not boot.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Sorry, way too little info. Follow >>Posting Guide<<. Add details of your psu (not just "650w").

  • OC on MSI Z77A-GD65 with i7-3770k @ 4,5GHz

    Hi to everyone,
i've problem with oc using "auto mode" and mess with vdroop control at "+100%" value.
Problem is when this it at 100%, CPU at OCCT running put 1,25V on CPU Core.
My piece of CPU need 1,29V on CPU Core to be stable 24/7.
Maybe there is a method that can put my CPU to run at 1,29V when its needed?
    sorry for my en btw.
Thanks for your time and help.

Try disabling Intel C-state, long duration maintained: 2secs
    and
    increase the PLL to 1.81
Another thing I have found helpful in the past, is to manually set the ram timings as opposed to an xmp profile.
(11-13-13-30; Command Rate 2T; Dramv 1.65) You can also try increasing the Dramv sightly(.25-.5 at the most)
it's working its stable, thanks for help.
Im only disable C-State and increase the PLL
    ram is on xmp profile.

  • Z77A-GD65 with 3570k noobie needs some help.

    Hi Guys,
First of all I’m very impressed by the looks of GD65, I just hope it will work as well as it looks…
So finally I should get my RAM tonight (4 x 4gb Sammy ECO ram).   I believe there might some issues with o/c the memory, which I believe was a ittle improved in beta bios.
    3570k
    Silver Arrow SB-E HSF
    4 x 4gb Sammy eco ram
Gigabyte gtx670 GPU should arrive early next week.
    Corsair TX750
    Windows 7 x64 SP1 Home
    HAF 922 case
I’ll use this method to upgrade mobo to the latest official BIOS 10.5 using recommeded method.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
Also should I wait for Gtx670 to come in next week, or would I be able to use hdmi/dvi output from GD65 (IB HD4000 IGPU) to display 1080P on LG 32LD450 display.  I believe there were some reports only VGA output works? Is it true?
Also where should I get most stable NIC Intel drivers (I saw some people having problems with them) and 898 audio drivers?
Is official 10.5 BIOS recommend or is there a “better” beta BIOS I should install (and where do I get it from)?
I do apologize for so many questions, but I’m very scared to put this rig together with so many z77 chipset issues around…   I’m just trying to avoid “ I told you so” from my wife… LOL  I’m concern about error 55 (memory not installed), in some cases CPU installation issues.  I’m coming from several years of AMD builds… so IB it is very new to me…
Any help would be much appreciated…
    TIA

I promise as soon as I get everything stable I will test it with 200mm fan as intake and outtake...
I love big sinks and fans, I will post some pictures after everything is done.  My system is nothing to brag about, HAF 922 with  3 x 200mm  1 x 120mm, 1 x 140mm and Silver Arrow SB-E (dual tower) HSF.    I’m using Lampron fan controller to control fans.
Positive pressure is very interesting concept and some swear it works...
    http://www.silverstonetek.com/techtalk_cont.php?tid=wh_positive&area=usa
So I went to bed at 3am last night, I did go far, as I was taking updates, installing drivers, changing drive letters… etc..
System seems to be stable at stock/default 10.3  bios settings, all I changed was to set fans on CPU (I selected 70C to be my goal) and SYSFAN1 to run at 50% (my 140mm internal fan, which is strapped to the drive cage).
The NIC card seems to be working fine,  Intel IGPU video works fine (using dvi to hdmi cable). I haven’t installed any temp monitoring software so I cannot tell you how is my IB CPU.
The only problem I found last night was I couldn’t get any audio from rear speaker output (I tried display’s and 2.1 speakers).   The driver seems to be working, because I can see sound bar moving up and down.  Also when I connect my headphone to my front audio output, I can hear sound and I get pop up saying I have headphones connected.    When I remove headphones I get another pop up saying the headphones have been disconnected.  When I connect anything to the green output (speaker out), I get pop up saying rear speakers were detected, however there is nothing no static, noise or anything…     I tried to disable/enable device without luck.      I’ve used all drivers from MSI website, should I try to see if there are newer/older drivers?   Since I’m currently using 10.3 BIOS, should I try latest 10.5?      Have you guys heard about this problem before?      If you have any ideas please let me… I did poke around BIOS but I couldn’t find anything related to audio…
Overall (other than small audio hiccup) “so far” I’m very happy from my purchase…
    Thank you

  • OC Z77A-GD65 with i5 3570k

Hi, just wanted to check with you guys regarding my settings and values.
I'm running the 10.8 Bios and running Mushkin Redline XMP1866 1.50V 2x4GB, Noctua DH14 air cooler, Creative Xfi Titanium, Seasonic SS-620GM (Bronze) in a CM Stacker 2 case.
On VCore Auto and 45x turbo multiplier (core ratio limits are default 38/38/37/36), my idle VCore is 0.960V and on load it's 1.300V (1.28 on CPUZ).
While playing with the droop from 100, 87.5, 75, and 50, the voltage is still the same.
I'm in the tropics with high humidity and ambient temp of 28C(it's 34C outside -_-) so with both stock and OC settings idle temps are 44C and during prime95 small FFTs it goes to 93C.
I was running a P8Z77 V-Pro before but it was faulty. On that MB this chip on offset vcore used to run 45x at 1.25V, and at 44x it could run 1.15V (temps were sub 90).
Do I have no choice but to go for a fixed VCore?

Aside from the Noctua cooler, I have 2x120mm exhaust fans at the back (1 is positioned at the Noctua cooler so it's like a 3 fan 2 radiator sammich), 80mm exh on top, 80mm in on side, and 2x120mm intake at front (2xCM HDD bays). The psu is located on the bottom of the tower drawing in from below and venting out back.
PS: I loaded default values and reflashed the bios and now the VDroop control is working.
    EIST/C1E enabled, Long/Short/Turbo limits/durations increased. SA is 0.97, pll at 1.81
Now at 45x with 87.5% droop, VCore at 1.29 on load
While running IBT on High, temps are 90 97 97 93 across cores (0-3). 1 and 2 peak at 100.
With 75% droop temps are lower by 3 degrees but I get WHEA errors.

  • MOVED: MSI Z77A-GD65 with Intel Xeon Processor E3-1245V2 - 3.4 GHz

This topic has been moved to Intel Core-iX boards.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=162013.0

Is this to be a gaming compuer or server I am confused
    http://ark.intel.com/products/65729/Intel-Xeon-Processor-E3-1245V2-8M-Cache-3_40-GHz
That mobo supports that cpu with the following bios:
    Xeon Ivy Bridge E3-1245V2 100 3.40 1M 8M E1 77 7751vA5.zip
So more than likely you will need a supported cpu to flash to that version for it to work.
If this is for gaming, there are better choices for the cpu though.

As for the memory, we have seen the best results with corsair dominator or vengence memory.

  • Z77a-gd65 no multi drop in idle with fixed vcore ?

Hi all, I am trying to oc my 2500k on the z77a-gd65 with a normal multi oc and fixed vcore, eist always enabled. interal pll overvoltage auto, intel turbo off, vdrop auto, digitial compensation auto, cpu core ocp expander auto, cpu core switching freq. auto. Ce1 enabled, intel c-state enabled, c state limit auto. Also I think they dont grip once fixed vcore.
Problem is: My multi doesn't drop in idle but hangs fixed at what ever multi I put in. Is a normal multi OC with a drop to 1.6 ghz in idle no longer possible in ivy bridge ? My SB did that just fine.

You obviously have a CPU with a good VID. Not everyone is that fortunate. It's your OC, do as you please. I OC most of my processors when under full load to sit at or just below the industry suggested maximums for them (CPU V. set on 'Auto') and experiment with the VDroop settings to ensure stability. With Sandy and Ivy, that is 1.400v's, or less when under load. On CPU V. 'Auto', worst Ivy CPU currently here will do 45X, another one does 46X, best Sandy here will do 51X. Heat, voltage requirements (VID), clock speed variations attainable between CPU specimens is rather large. Only a few rigs here have 'raw' OC's on them and run manual set CPU V. all the time.
    Quote
So, if you use your machine for mostly gaming (why oc otherwise) one can actually save more with manual vcore if this is lower at full load than the auto (especially for me as I get 4.4 GHz with a 2500k on 1.156 vcore, which I will never get down to on auto vcore.).
Rendering, Audio - Video creation, OC'ing the CPU is 'very' beneficial to performance.

  • Enabling OC Genie II from Control Center downgrades the CPU?!?! Z77A-GD65

Now I'm getting all the time more and more confused about this Z77A-GD65 with Intel i7 3770K over-clocking. I really hope that someone could help.
OK, there's a button on the motherboard that by enabling it the system automatically overclocks itself during the next boot. OK, fine. But what is that OC Genie II button in Control Center supposed to be? After enabling the OC button on mainboard and rebooting the CPU multiplier goes up from the default 35 to 42 and that's fine. But when enabling the OC Genie II overclocker from within Windows (from MSI Control Center) and rebooting, then the clock multiplier downgrades back to 35 ?!?!?! Why is that?
How is the Control Center supposed to be used for overclocking? Does it have a bug or something? At least it doesn't seem to work for me? Should the BIOS be reset to default values first or something? Should the OC Genie button on the motherboard be enabled at all?
However I would be happy to be able to automatically tune-up my system directly from Windows 7 (X64, SP1) but I don't know how to do it.
And why there's a button on the motherboard if the over-clocker is supposed to be working from within Control Center? Which one should I use and how? Moreover, should I have the main setting set (via reboot --> BIOS) set to STANDARD or OC GENIE II? I have so much trouble understanding all this..
PLEASE PLEASE HELP! Thank you friends.

Quote from: xmad on 26-September-12, 09:17:04
Go into bios and in the OC section, change "OC Genie Function Control" from By onboard button to "by bios option" see if that works better.
Also, most people don't use control center for more than monitering. I do all of my overclocking from UEFI/Bios and check on things in click bios II.
OK, thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know! So the Control Center's (within Windows) "Use OC Genie" shouldn't be used either? I suspect that this being enabled has got something to do with my poor ATI RADEON HD5770 performance. I'm currently experimenting it, don't know yet. But I will try disabling OC Genie from Control Center.
But should I disable the oc Genie button also on the motherboard itself? How would that affect things? Easier/harder to overclock the MB with OC Genie enabled? These current MB's are so damn complicated But I'd appreciate any help!

  • Z77A-GD65 overheating problem. Fan control?

Two weeks ago I built my computer with the intention of overclocking it.  With that in mind I put in a Corsair H60 liquid cooler.  My com isn't extremely powerful (my component list is in my signature below), so I figured the H60 would be more than enough.  HOWEVER, even without overclocking it runs hotter than I think it should. It idles in the mid-30Cs and quickly goes over 60C when I game.  I thought that wasn't too high, so I pushed to OC Genie button and it overclocked to a measly 4.2GHz.  Then my com idled in the mid-50s and after 15 min of gaming it was in the high 70Cs and climbing.  This freaked me out, so I de-overclocked it.
I read online that the radiator fan should be ~4000 rpm, but mine maxs out at ~2000 rpm.  I have another fan in the front of the case and it's even slower than that.  I hooked them up to sys fan 1 and 2 and turned the settings up for those in the bios to 100%, but they won't go any faster.  Is there a way to get them up to ~4000 rpm? Is that even my cooling problem?  Should I get aftermarket thermal paste and re-seat my H60?  I installed it with the pre-applied thermal paste the first time.
Please help!!!  I thought the H60 would easily keep my system ice cold, but it's not.  Where did I go wrong??

Hello-I have the same board and cooler,But using a I7 3770k. On almost every build-I only use the h60. There is 2 things you have to watch for.
1-Make sure the pump power plug-is plugged into the CPU Fan.-I have heard of other h60 having issues when plugged into one of the other fan slots. Not sure if it has to do with the Power coming out? But dbl check!!!
2-Mine always comes with a fan reducer. The fan reducer will run the fan at half the rpms. I never use my reducer.I also try and make sure to always have these in a push pull configuration. Depending on my case. If I have a case with plenty of front fans. I only apply the fan to the back of the case-than the radiator. Fan In Pull......But if I only have one fan in the front-or no fan in the front. I will purchase another 120mm Fan.
My temps with the H60-z77a-gd65-I7 3770k. and my case RAIDMAX AEOLUS ATX-818WB--all fan slots populated---Single fan in Pull
Ceramique 2 thermal paste-I always wipe the factory paste off and apply my own....
    Cpu temp----25 idle---50c load....
Never had any issues with the H60

Try building this outside of the case on a non-conductive suface w/ only the cpu , cooler, psu and 1 stick of memory.
Finally, while it is out of the case, remove the cpu and inspect the cpu pins with a bright light and hd zoom or a magnifying glass. Perhaps you bumped the cooler or something and damage occured. (Those pins will bend very easily) Even one just slightly out of line can cause this.

    Hello everyone,
I recently bought a new computer composed of the following :
    MSi Z77A-GD65
    I7-3770K
    G.skill trident 19200
I kept the same PSU and GPU that i had before :
    560ti and Cooler Master 1000W.
After assembling my new beast, when i tried to boot it for the first time, nothing happened ans i heard a small sound coming from the motherboard.
I tried different setups (removing HDD, trying differents memory etc...) and finaly it booted for 1 second, the LED1 turned red and it switched off.(8 pin CPU alimentation was not pluged in).
Since then i can't boot it up anymore.
Everytime there is power, the power bouton on the motherboard is green and i can hear a little sound coming from it( I aslo noticed that the bigger chipset was hot).
I simply don't know what to do anymore.
Please help me!! (and sorry for my bad english)

    I tried that, didn't worked.
I should be able to pick up another PSU so I'm going to test the new setup with it and retry my actual PSU (CM 1000W) on my old setup.
Thank you for your answer, please if you have any suggestion/idea let me know about it.

    Hello
I have MB MSI Z77A GD65 with Intel 2500K. It worked fine, but I was on vacation for one week and after my return, it dont want to boot. (During vacation, I turned off my PSU and unplugged electric cable from wall.)
After I push power on button, monitor signs no signal and MB stuck with code "d7". After it, I need to push power button for 5sec and it shut off. It will eventually boot up on third - fifth attemp everytime. I tried to unplug everything from board, leaved only PSU, CPU and one ram module, but still same result, it will boot 1 time from 5 attempts (average). Is it clearly for RMA or what should I try?

  • Z77A-GD65 + GTX780Ti = BIOS error 99

Posted this on someone elses thread, apologies:
'Im having a similar problem, i have had a Z77a-GD65 with a GTX 670 windforce X3 card working for over a year, got the GTX 780Ti last night, removed the 670 and replaced with the 780Ti, all of a sudden getting error codes, removed all graphics cards getting error code 99, stripped down to no HDD, 1 stick of different RAM no graphics (except intel 3770K onboard graphics) and still cant get past error 99.
I have tried and reset both CMOS, removed battery etc, makes no difference.
I have a 600W PSU as recommended, has this combo fried my motherboard, as replacing my GTX670 now does not fix the problem, so Im really in trouble.  I only have a spare laptop so mo way to tyest any individual parts out.'
The advice was to update BIOS, Im not sure how to do that if I cant boot the machine, any ideas?

Unfortunately using onboard graphics also produces error code 99, its impossible to get to the BIOS, even with the MOBO on my desk with just CPU and RAM, still get error code 99 on the MOBO post code readout.  Is there any way to bypass error codes and get to BIOS?
Something seemed fundamentally broken so I got a cheaper MSI Z77MA-G45, put it all together and everything works perfectly, even the GTX780Ti, perhaps my old MOBO just failed.  Im pretty disappointed though as it was only 18 months old.

Set the voltage to 1.65 & 1.1 and install all 4 sticks and re-test.
I wasn't saying the cpu was broken or anything like that. What I was getting at was that the Integrated Memory Controller on dual channel machines sometime have a bit of trouble with all of the band width when hooked up to quad channel. Can also be cause by the memory itself as Froggy was saying:

Test the other two sticks individually in the primary DIMM slot to see if one or both are faulty.
Virtu-MVP was an exciting idea that hasn't really worked as well as it should due to a lack of support from LUCID. I disabled mine long ago due to nusiance issues.

Right now---since I have taken out the 2 extra sticks of Ram.....I have not had a single crash..."2 hours".I even turn up the stick to the suggested 1600...Running great...I am a firm believer if it an't broke.....Leave it alone>>>>>>>>>>LOL!!!!!I like the way it is running....
If this is the case, you can reset the dramv and I/o voltage to "Auto".
Perhaps even enable the XMP profile of the ram.
