Z87 64GB RAM Support

The product documentation for the MSI Z87 Motherboards list 64GB as the maximum.
Has anyone tried it?  Intel and all other Z87-based boards list 32GB as the maximum.
Thanks!

The M87 Gaming board's specifications on the MSI website actually show Max Memory (GB)  64

The manual doesn't. I think it is a typo error or mistake!

  • 64GB+ RAM support: OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0

OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0, a minor software update bringing a handful of fixes to the latest version of OS X Mountain Lion.
The OS X v10.8.2 Supplemental Update is recommended for all users running OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 and includes the following fixes:
    - Resolves an issue that may cause certain Japanese characters to appear incorrectly in Mail
    - Allows Safari to access secure sites when parental controls are enabled
    - Addresses an issue that may prevent systems with more than 64 GB of RAM from starting up
    Not on http://support.apple.com/downloads/ yet.

The supplemental update did address the 'slow' Time Machine backups under 10.7.5 - if this is your first backup, and depending on how much data you are backing up, I would guess that it could take 6-9 hours, but certainly not 2 (or 99) days. If it seems that the backup is 'hung' just stop it, reformat the external drive, and try again. For some great Time Machine troubleshooting tips, see http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html.
    Good luck,

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) 64GB RAM

I want build 64gb workstation to work (video, 3d symulation etc) and have question which memory i need to buy becouse i read someone have problems to see all 64gb.
I look at MSI RAM support and find 2 cheap options:
    DDR3 16 GB 2x8GB 1333 MHZ CL9 DUAL EVO CORSA GEIL [GOC316GB1333C9DC]
    Patriot G2 Series 2x8GB 1333MHz DDR3 CL9 XMP Ready, 1.5V [PGD316G1333ELK]
When i put 4x this memory to have 64 will be work fine ?

The main problem here is not the mainboard.
    It's the processor.
For both Core i7-3930K and i7-3960K:
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type):  64 GB
    Memory Types:  DDR3-1066/1333/1600
    Max Memory Bandwidth:  51.2 GB/s

  • Mac Pro (Late 2013) - 64GB RAM Upgrade

Anyone have any recomendations on third party brand for a 64GB RAM upgrade.
Apple RAM costs approx £1000 GBP whereas Crucial is approx £645 GBP, OWC is similar to crucial if I import from the US but I'm not sure if their ram are Registered or unbuffered.
The above is all cost based - should i be considering other factors such as performance and reliability?
Also when moving to Registered DIMMs i understand that the presence of the Registered DIMM controller on the DIMMs consumes one clock cycle is this a significant hit in performace over Unbuffered DIMMs?

I don't think so. Take a look at these DIMMs for reference (this Vendor show the specs of exactly what modules will be shipped to you). Even the 16GB DIMMs, while Registered, are still showing they perform at CL9 level (9 clocks to access) -- the same as unbuffered.

Just thought i would update you. I spoke to DMS Technical Support and apparently that DMS CL9 Rating is a typo.  It should be CL13!

  • 64GB RAM in two stages, any issues?

    Hello,
I am building a desktop and need your valuable help. The motherboard and CPU I will buy support 64GB RAM, I am thinking to put 32GB (4x 8GB kit) at the beginning and sometime in 2013 add 32 GB more, using the same kit brand/model. Is there any issues doing it? I have read some comments saying that it might cause problems and using RAM from different kits (even with the same brand/model) is not advisable.
    My CPU: i7-3930k
I have not decided yet which motherboard, but it will be one of these:
    ASUS X79 PRO
    or
    GIGABYTE X79-UD5
I really appreciate your comments, suggestions or experience on this,
    William Gonzales

Memory manufacturers should be able to track parts in a batch based on the S/N information that includes the batch info. What you do is buy the first 4 ie 1 set with 4x8 and then call the manufacturer when your ready to buy the 2nd set and verify current production will work with it. If they verify it will then hopefully when you buy the 2nd, it will be relatively new stock that will be out of the current batches. This is not bullet proof but it will help often times. If that memory manufacturer sells direct to end users then that normally eliminates the problems or their willing to trade in the original 4 sticks for 8 of the current batch. However the best way is as Harm mentions.

  • MSI X79MA-GD45 and 64GB RAM

    Hi,
I'm looking to build a compact server for virtualization and that's how i came across the MSI X79MA board. It's the only board I can find that supports 64GB RAM. However, I havn't found any place where I can get 16GB Unbuffered RAM sticks. So my questoin is, does that even exist?

I'm not here to get into any argument one way or the other about it but simply to post this info, from the manual for the X79MA-GD45:
    Memory Support
    4x DDR3 DIMMs support DDR3 2400*(OC)/ 2133*(OC)/ 1800*(OC)/ 1600/ 1333/
    1066 DRAM (64GB Max)
Supports Quad-Channel mode, one DIMM per channel
This is from the specs page MSI website:
    Main Memory
    • Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 1.5 Volt DDR3 1066/1333/1600/1800*/2133*/2400* (OC) DRAM, 64GB Max
    - Supports Quad channel mode
Example info for MB supported Xeon E5-2670
    Memory Specifications
Max Memory Size (dependent on memory type)  750 GB

  • Re-enabling DVD-RAM support?

The DVD drives in MacBook and MacBook Pro (usually Panasonic/Matshita or LG, Googling around found those were the only brands shipped with MacBooks) support DVD-RAM media. However, it seems Apple decided to use "special" firmware that basically cripples the drive and disables DVD-RAM support. Well, at least write support (my MacBooks read DVD-RAM OK).
Is there any way to re-enable writing on DVD-RAM in MacBooks? Some non-offical firmware or something, anything?
I found some firmwares for old PowerBook G4 laptops that re-enables DVD-RAM support. But nothing for current MacBooks.

The DVD-RAM and UDF support in Mac OS X is good. It's been around for a long time too, since Mac OS 8.something. I've just copied over about 40 gigs of data from my DVD-RAMs I used for backup on the PC onto my MacBook (as I said, they forgot to disable reading from DVD-RAM, hoooray). It's just the hardware that's intentionally crippled. I could connect my external LG DVD drive (which supports all formats, including DVD-RAM) and use it to write files onto DVD-RAM media.
However, I don't see any reason why would I need to use external drive when internal drive in my MacBook is perfectly capable of doing it (if it wasn't for Apple that decided to flash it with their own firmware which disables the writes on DVD-RAM media).
If it was a desktop system, I probably wouldn't be complaining much. I'd just use my external LG drive. But it's laptop, and hauling external DVD drive around just because some manager decided users should not use DVD-RAM is not really an option...
If anybody from Apple is reading this, could you guys please with sugar on top re-enable DVD-RAM support in drive's firmware? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • DVD-RAM support for iMac (late 2006)

    Hello,
    according to the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4755862
    I have a iMac C2D 2,16GHZ and a Pioneer DVR-K06 DVD Drive
According the pioneer specifications this drive supports DVD-RAM read and write.
But it isn't possible. Why? DVD-RAM is ideal to backup data. It can be rewritten over 100,000 times (DVD±RW approx. 1,000 times)
It is possible that Apple supply a firmware update that allows to read and burn DVD-RAM?

Thank you and SG for your responses.
Several of my TV's DVD Recorder features are not available with the use of a regular DVD disc and require a DVD RAM disc (chapters, etc.) So I decided to do some experimenting and cross checking of the DVD Recorder and my computer DVD-RAM supported DVD burner/Premiere Elements with regard to disc types for DVD-VIDEO. That is what got us to my question.
Several months ago, I got involved in someone else's issue where he could not rip content from a DVD disc which had its origins in a camcorder that recorded to either a DVD-R or DVD-RAM disc. I suspect that my mini test ran into similar issues, that is, DVD-R with the recording format of DVD-VIDEO and DVD-RAM with the recording format of VR. (I added this explanation to clean up my previous misspoken comment about DVD-VIDEO format having a different folder/file structure depending on whether a DVD-R or DVD RAM was involved.)

  • Oracle database maximum CPU & RAM support

Ok, I've hunted high and low on oracle.com, OTN and the newsgroups before I came here so please bear me on this very basic question.
As a consultant, I've been asked a number of times by customers:
    1. What is the maximum number of CPUs an Oracle 8i/9i database STANDARD edition supports?
    2. Is the number the same for Unix and NT?
    3. What is the maximum amount of RAM supported by the STANDARD edition database?
    4. Again, is it the same for Unix and NT?
Sorry if this is very basic stuff but strangely, after having been an Oracle user for 7 years, I never knew this info.
    joe.

I don't think the previous response caught the Standard Edition part of your question.
    1. What is the maximum number of CPUs an Oracle 8i/9i database STANDARD edition supports?4 processors is tha max for Standard Edition, to support more you need Enterprise Edition.
    2. Is the number the same for Unix and NT?Yes
    3. What is the maximum amount of RAM supported by the STANDARD edition database?
    4. Again, is it the same for Unix and NT?I don't know of a max but that doesn't mean there isn't one.
Standard Edition also doesn't have the advanced replication, VLDB, parallel processing and OLAP features that Enterprise Edition has,
    along with some other things.
    Hope this helps.

  • MSI X79MA-GD45 64GB RAM

I bought a MSI X79MA-GD45 for my office a little while ago with 16GB RAM.
I would like to replace these 2 8gb sticks with 4x16gb, so as to have 64GB in total. However, despite the official specification stating that the board supports 64gb using 4 slots, there is not a single 16GB stick listed on the list of supported memory.
So my question is, is it even possible, to get 64GB of RAM working on this mainboard, or do I have to start looking for an alternative?

If 16gb stick have reached the market (Which they hadn't last I checked)
    Quote
    * The maximum 64GB of system memory can be reached while using 16 GB (or above) memory modules. We will update the memory test report on the website when the new memory modules are available on the market.
Why so much ram, might be better to look for a server mainboard if you really need more than 32GB right now.

  • Z87 G45 RAM Problem

    Hi
    I have the Z87 G45 mainboard and 4 dimms of ddr3 G.Skill Ares 16GAO.
The ram is a 16gb dual channel, but in order to get a post screen, only single channel dimm slot 3 or 4 or both work.
So I can have max 8gb of ram since only those two dimms work with the ram Ares modules.
When I get into uefi, I select no xmp profile, set the speed to 1600 but still nothing happens. I have updated the bios to the latest version 1.3 but nothing still.
In the bios it says 8gigs single channel.
Please any help is much appreciated
    Ram module xmp is 11-11-11-28 @ 1.6v

Back to the op, does a single stick in dimm 1 or 2 post? If no, have u checked the CPU socket pins?
u?  Agree with xmad if DIMM1 and DIMM2 are not working, there are bent or damaged pins in the CPU socket, or, CPU cooler improperly mounted, or, an errant standoff(s) underneath the mainboard shorting/grounding the DIMM slots. My bet is on the socket pins.
    Ram module xmp is 11-11-11-28 @ 1.6v
Website shows 11 11 11 30 2N @ 1.60v's. Be that as it may, the platform CPU IMC support is for DDR3 1600 @ 1.50v's + or - 0.075v's. There is a sordid history of that particular brand of RAM and another brand-X board maker, but the OP's thread is not the place for discussion about it.

  • Want to know ram supported in my laptop Dv6 3004 tu

    Hi,
My ram is of 2gb ddr3. I am planning to upgrade my ram upto 6 gb. I want to buy extra 4gb ram from my vaccant slots.
But Which type it will support.
    Type
    Speed
    Capacity
    Voltage
    Any recomends brand?????
    Plese help me out hp.

    Hi
Here is the service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02657339.pdf
Yes you can upgrade upto 8GB (2*4GB) if the operating system installed is 64-bit
There are two slots in the memory bay
Supports dual channel boost if two identical RAMs of same size are put
    Type: DDR3, SO-DIMM SDRAM
    Non-ECC, UNBUFFERED
Speed: your processor can run RAM only at 1066MHz, if 1333MHz is put it'll downgrade to 1066MHz
Capacity: upto 8GB only if OS installed is 64-bit
In 32-bit OS, system can "take" only upto 4GB.
If your OS is 64-bit, you can add extra 4GB in other slot to make total RAM to 6Gb too.
Brands: Hynix, Elpida, Kingston, G.Skill, Crucial
    Here are some of them:

  • MacBook Black 2008' RAM support

I recently purchased an 8gb DDR2 800MHz ram kit and installed it into my Black MacBook which supports up to 6gb. I have TechTool's Pro 7 and it's giving me a "caution" symbol because the 800MHz RAM isn't the offical supported speed that the MacBook can take. Is it ok to have  2gb 667MHz RAM and a 4gb 800MHz RAM chip together? Does this cause system issues or slowdowns?
I am just weary because I noticed a slight lag after upgrading and I have a 128gb SSD inside and now 6gb of RAM which should theoretically speed things up even more.
Any help or insight would be fantastic! Thanks in advance

The biggest thing that is going to happen is the computer is going to only go as the slowest piece of RAM.  I'm not sure what speed is supported by the computer and what one you should use, but I can tell you that by using a 667 MHz and an 800 MHz piece of RAM, the 800 MHz RAM is going to slow down and run at 667 MHz.  If your computer can support the 800 MHz, then by having two of the same pieces of RAM in the computer, you are going to run at 800 MHz which in turn is going to be faster RAM which is going to get rid of the sluggish feeling that you were explaining.  However, like I said, I'm not sure if it will accept the 800 MHz RAM if it doesn't support it.  The only reason it is now if it doesn't is because the 667 MHz RAM that is there, is causing the other stick to slow down which is making it work with the computer even though it is 800 MHz.  However, with the RAM being forced to slow down like that, it can cause some timing errors which is going to give you kernel panics and things like that so I would keep an eye on it.
