Z87-G45 CPU Fan Sensor Malfunction

Seems like pretty much a non issue but none the less I want to figure this out. When monitoring fan speeds on the MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard it keeps reading zero, then returns to a normal level, then reads 0. I noted this even in the motherboards on utility accessed before allowing windows to load and again using a 3rd party monitoring program. I'm going to assume its a faulty sensor but I'm just not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

the stock coolers with Processors suck and are only meant as basic cooling (if there under load they get very hot and the fan spins at 100% which on them sounds like a jet engine) i too would change that for a good after-market one!
My I5-4590 hovers around 30C idle, and stays under 60C under gaming loads with the stock cooler ... even with more CPU intensive games, so, they do work well if everything is working correctly..... possible that his CPU fan is getting ready to fail.

Hi all, new to this forum and MSI Motherboards.
i have a problem with my CPU fan speed when i plug any fan and water cooler fan into the CPU 4pin they all run at 2000+ rpm, but when i use the fan 1 or fan 2 --4 pin it runs at a slower speed of 1400rpm, am i missing something in bios, i have 2.5 version of bios, would be greatfull for any help....

Should be able to adjust in the section below or with control center.

  • MSI Z87-G45 Gaming Fan Header max Amp and total max amp

    Hey guys,
I just bought this board (not yet arrived) and i am 1 fan slot short on the motherboard so i will be using a Y splitter. I will also use slip streams 1900 rpm (0.53A max), which i won't be using on max rpm.
After ALOT of reading i found many different max Amp values for many different boards. I also downloaded the manual for this specific board but the max Amp or Wattage is not in there, so i hope one of you knows.
If you combine two slip streams 1900rpm on  max settings it will give 1.06A, and i was wondering if its safe to put this on one fan header (maybe the cpu fan header can handle more than the system fan headers). I have read that for some boards the max Amp per fan header is 1A which will be a little short for me and that the total Amp recommended for all fan headers combined is less than when you add them up yourself. My total Amp including the y splitter will be 3.18A
I hope i gave enough info for  you guys and if not feel free to ask for more.

1 amp comes to mind, but in all honesty, you might be better off running directly from the PSU power and/or using an aftermarket fan controller.
And is the 0.06 difference really going to have a negative effect on header / motherboard life time?

  • Z87-G45 GAMING temperature sensors

Corsair Link software show that this motherboard have "MSI Temp 3", "MSI System Temp", "MSI TZ00" and "MSI TZ01" temperature sensors. Where is it situated on motherboard?

    Download HWINFO64.
The same sensors will be shown there but perhaps with different names.
You will also see that some info is provided by the Intel CPU itself, (sensors on the CPU) and then you will see a section named Fintek chip. The labels there maybe the same as what you see now in your software.
You can easily compare the temps with the Intel ones and then you can sort of figure out which is which.
Normally one is the CPU package, one for the IA cores which is the same as the package, and one for the graphics core. Also one each for the CPU cores themselves.
Then you will have some sort of MB sensor, where exactly is a guess, but you can ask MSI technical. Normally in the CPU area or vicinity.
Also you will have one for the PCH (classic southbridge). Intel calls that sensor PCH but the Fintek chip may reflect it as TZ00 or TZ01 or it may even be the sys temp. If your system is in idle, the PCH will usually be in the 40C region.

  • Z87-GD65 CPU Fan speed control not working

As per the title, the fan speeds set from either the BIOS (E7845IMS.1B0) itself or from within Command Center don't make any difference to the sped of the fans on the CPU cooler.
The cooler is a Noctua NH-D14 with stock fans (non PWM)
    Can anyone help?
I'm not sure if I've missed a BIOS option anywhere!

However, I removed the fans from the CPU headers and put them on system fan header, now the fan controls work - looks like the mobo is faulty :(
Not gonna RMA it though, it's pretty trivial
    It's not faulty at all.
The CPU fan header is PWM only!
The obsolete Voltage Control method is not recommended for CPUs.
    It's a recipe for failures.
All the modern motherboards require PWM control for the CPU fan.
So you should replace the CPU fan with a PWM one.

It looks like a PSU/grounding issue.
You might need to rebuild the entire PC.
Remove everything from the case and start with a minimal config (barebone).

  • Z87-G45 Fan Connection Questions

    Greetings,
I wanted to ask about connecting my Corsair liquid cooler.  I'm using 2 radiator fans in a push-pull config, plus the cooler itself needs power.  The Z87-G45 has 2 cpu fan connectors.
My first question is am I going to get fan control from this mobo?  All my fans and cooler cables are 3-pin.  I was given the impression that you might need 4-pin fans for variable fan speed control.  Is that true?
If I am somehow going to get fan control from the mobo, I'd appreciate some advice on what goes where.  Should I hook up the cooler power and one of the radiator fans to the CPU fan connectors and then the other radiator fan to a sys fan connector?  Or would it better to have the cooler power on a sys fan connector?  Better yet, is it safe to use a Y-connector for both of the radiator fans.  I can't get a clear read on whether or not there is enough power for that and also whether it might screw up the BIOS readings for fan control (if that's a factor).  I'm also one connector short for all the fans I want to run, so a Y-connector would be ideal.  The 2 radiator fans are identical (Corsair AF120 - 12v/0.40a).  I've read people write they *think* the max amp for each connector is 1.0, but I can't find anything definitive (it's not in manual).
If you're confident about any of this, I would appreciate your advice.
    Thanks,
    Bobby

Thanks for replying to one of my posts yet again Nichrome.  You are an invaluable resource for this forum.
I did a double-check, and the Corsair fans are 3 pin.  It's a shame; I wish I had studied this b4 I bought them.  They are the loudest fans in my system.  4 pin fans, surprisingly, still seem to be very much the exception.  Doing a search on Newegg for 4 pin fans, most of them, where I could see a picture of the plug, were of the old power supply molex variety.
Am I right to believe that the fan control for the CPU fan headers would be based on the CPU temp and the Sys fan headers would be based on either the mobo temp or the general temp of the air in the case?  That will confirm for me if it's a bad idea to hook up the radiator fans to the Sys fan headers.
    Thanks,
    Bobby

  • CPU fan at high speed due to power supply sensor

The CPU fan on my Imac runs at 3900 RPM. Apple hardware test provides an error code of 4 SNS/1/40000000:TpOP-131.000 which is the temperature sensor on the power supply. I opened the Imac and the single wire to the power supply is connected securely. At this point, the problem could be in the sensor wire ( which disappears into the wiring harness), the power supply sensor - which I assume is built into the power supply, or in the the logic board where the temperature information is processed. I have tried the SMC and PRAM resets with no results. The wiring harness is very difficult to replace, and the power supply is relatively expensive, so I would appreciate it if anyone who has solved this problem could tell me what the solution was. I would really like to repair the Imac and eliminate the loud fan noise.

    Hi ee36,
Thanks for your response. I have performed the SMC reset you described many times with no positive results.
The apple repair manual for my Imac says to replace the wiring harness if you have this problem. A daunting procedure for me since you have to almost completely disassemble the Imac. It seems that if the sensor is disconnected (open circuit) the associated fan (CPU fan in this case) will always run at high speed. It seems to me that several failure modes would create this open circuit, and I was hoping that someone could identify how their Imac was fixed so I could hopefully determine the most likely effective repair. I have created an applescript program which I have set up to limit the cpu fan to 1500 RPM and limit the noise, but I would really like to have the security of knowing that the fan could respond to elevated temperatures if necessary. Thanks again.

  • Z87-G45 has High CPU Usage from "System Interrupts" from USB EHCI#2

After install of Z87-G45 Board and associated drivers the CPU was being consumed by high System Interrupts.  I finally tracked this down to the device named Intel(R) Series/C220 Series USB EHCI#2 - 8C2D device.  When I disable this in device manager the high cpu immediately drops to 0.1% or less and when I reenable it the CPU consumption goes back to 50% of one core of an i5-4670K under Windows 7 64-bit  Of course disabling it turns off most of the USB 2.0 ports.
I have unplugged all USB2.0 headers from the board, updated bios to 1.5, updated the device driver from 9.4.0.1017 to 9.4.0.1025 (7/31/2013), installed the new Intel ME 90 driver pack released  on 10/29 and none of this has helped.
Is this a faulty board or is there something else to try?

    Quote
It was a motherboard swap not a fresh install.
Hopefully you don't have any other problems. This is the recommended way to go.

Problem solved.  For the benefit of others who may run into this kind of problem here is my solution.  Look for articles on "remove unused USB devices" as a guide.  You will be surprised how much junk is left installed on your system.  Anything ever plugged in will leave garbage behind.
Go to control panel->System->Advanced system settings on left then under Advanced pick Environment Variables at the bottom.
    Create a new variable name = devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and value = 1
    logout/reboot
go to device manager and under view menu pick show hidden devices.
Now manually go through and remove all the grayed out devices, especially under the USB controllers section but worthwhile to remove all the old garbage.  Reboot when done.
As always make backups before you start.
    Good work

  • Control 3 pin cpu fan on Z77A-G45

hi, i have a Z77A-G45 motherboard and a cpu fan with 3 pin only (no 4 pin PWM),
the cpu fan is spinning at a high rpm all the time and no matter if its idle or cpu is extremely hot,
i couldn't get it to change using the bios hardware monitor's "CPU smart fan target",
nor with msi control center on windows.
i believe this is because the motherboard needs to be told to change voltage instead of pwm mode (this solved a similar problem on a gigabyte board),
how do i change the cpu speed from pwm to voltage mode?

  • Z87 G45 No Post No Display

This seems to be a common issue, but after setting up my system using this motherboard, the system fails to post, and no display is sent to the monitor. When powered on, the fans and lights (including the audio boost light) will turn on for a few seconds, then turn off and turn back on, after which they continue to stay on until I power down the system. I've heard that psu compatibility with haswell might be an issue. I have an NZXT Hale 82 850W PSU, and I can't find any information on its compatibility with haswell. Does anyone know what the issue could be, or information on whether or not my psu is compatible?

Bought a new power supply. The thermaltake smart m series 850W. Should be haswell compatible. I ended up with the same result. No post, no display, and it powers on, powers off, and then stays on. I guess I'll try to rma the board, though due to the seemingly high frequency if this issue, I'm afraid a new board will just yield the same result... After which... I'm not sure what to do.
    Any verification of that?

  • Motherboard FAN Sensors

    Hi,
I am not sure if this happened all along, or only after I installed the CoreCenter.
My current system consist of P4 3.0 (with HT), MSI 865PE Neo2 Series Motherboard, 2GB RAM. Graphics Card is ATI 9250, 1 Creative Audigy Platimum. I have 2 SATA hdd, WD500DB and Seagate 250GB. 1 IDE WD200GB, 1 TDK 40/12/48B and Benq DW1670. The PSU is seasonic m12-2 430w, newly acquired). I did not do any overclocking, i.e. did not install CoreCenter, until recently.
After I installed the CoreCenter, out of the blue, it will trigger off the alarm that the CPU fan is not running although I can still see the fan spinning well. All the fans (CPU, 2 casing fans) in the system at that time is reported to have 0 RPM. Is it because motherboard is dying, or it is an issue of the Software that cause the senor to malfunction?
        Please help. Thanks in advance.
    Regards.

Uninstall Core Center completely.  Can you see anything about fan speeds in BIOS (H/W Monitor)?
Install SpeedFan and Everest Ultimate (latest Trial Version) and check what they have to say about your fans.
I did install the sensor view. At the time of failure, the sensor view also display the fan RPM as 0. After I restart the server, every thing goes back to normal. Strange.
Anyway, I have uninstalled the CoreCenter, and installed the SpeedFan. Will carry on to monitor the system.

  • Overclocking Help .... MSI Z87 G45 with i5 4670k

Hi guys first of all i want to say MSI ROCKS!!!!!....
Purchased my first ever MSI motherboard and very satisfied from it ..... the looks are killer and now i want to see if its killer in OC as well ....
    My specs are as follows:
    MSI Z87 G45  (bios version 1.7)
    Core i5 4670k
GSKILL Rip Jaws 8gb (4x2) 2133 mhz (but running at 1600)
    Sapphire R9 290 TRI-X OC 4GB
    Corsair GS800 800 watts psu....
Now my goal is to get safest OC around 4.2 - 4.4 ghz with minimal voltage and fully stable ..... its my first time with K series processor and there are just so many settings in the BIOS .... I know how to change the multiplier and CPU voltage and i tried doing 4.4 ghz @ 1.15 but it wasn't stable in AIDA64 stress test .... so help me oh the mighty overclockers :D .... Screenshots of bios settings would be highly appreciated ....

Using Cooler Master Hyper 212+ with it with dual fans .... I did some overclocking on my own today (saw some OC screeshots of bios of Z87 G45 by some people) ...... 4.3 GHZ @ 1.15 voltage (but CPU-Z and AIDA 64 both showing 1.224) ...... Did 2 hours testing of Aida-64 stability and maximum temp i reached was 69c on one core and 65c TJ .... I couldn't boot into windows on the same settings @ 4.4 ghz ..... here are the screenshots of my OC profile .....
still my aim is to get maximum safest OC with lowest possible voltage ...

I am building a gaming computer. When i turn on my computer the cpu fan spins quickly then immediately slows down to a slow spinning state. My Boost audio light is on as well. But i get no display. I have tried the DVI HDMI and VGA outputs. I also accidentally pressed the cmos button while the compute was on. I also removed my mobo battery for 5 mins. Oh and on top of all that i dont have my standoffs. So maybe the board is short circuiting. But if that was the case my is my cpu fan remaining on as well as my boost audio light?
