Z87-G45 USB Mass Storage & other devices not working (except keyboard/mouse)

My Z87-G45 died on me last month in warranty so I received a replacement one.
Unfortunatly I'm experiencing mayor USB issues.
- In Bios mode, no USB mass storage devices are detected (usb stick/disk). USB keyboard and mouse work fine
- In Windows no USB device except for the keyboard and mouse are detected.
- Can't see USB Mass Storage Device driver in the USB controllers list
Installed all latest drivers + CMOS CLEAR just in case. Results stay the same.
I assume it's best that I return the motherboard?
Kind regards
Frederick

All drivers are already all up-to-date
I also want to stress that USB mass storage devices are not detected in BIOS, NOR as bootable USB device. So I can't upgrade BIOS even if I wanted to.
have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?
have you tested with mainboard out of PC case placed over wooden table?

  • Mdr-nc31e or any other device not working anymore

Since a week now, the phone is not detecting my mdr-nc31e or even any other device plugged in the jack. I tried the smart connect thing but nothing. The sound is only coming out from the speakers. Pls help me out guys.

Still nothing I experienced some difficulties starting 2 months when plugging my headphones (all types), but they worked.Last two weeks, i dove with the phone under water. After that, i experienced this issue. But when i did the smart connect thing (a week ago), my MDR-nc31e were detected by the phone, and worked perfectly (but not the other headphones). But now, all of them are out. Maybe i should take it to someone from Sony Support. It should be a hardware problem, not a soft one.

  • USB Mass Storage Mode Missing :-(

I just upgraded? to the Samsung Galaxy S III today and have been very happy for the most part.  However...
I am EXTREMELY disappointed that the only options to transfer files to the phone/SD Card are to use the MTP and Photo protocols.  I always loved my Android phone...built off of open source software...and using open standards (things like USB Mass Storage).  It is incredibly useful to be able to plug my phone into almost any PC, running any OS, and be able to transfer files to and fro.
Where is the rest of the uproar?  When are we going to demand that one of the most useful features on our phone be put back.  It was already there...it was already working...and has been dropped for lame, limited use protocols...  Why?  Who is getting paid off?  Why?
Bring back USB Mass Storage Mode!!!!

It is always a good idea to do some research...  I have followed your suggestion and found that Google has two reasons for using MTP instead of USB Mass Storage.  They  are:
      1)  “A main reason for using MTP rather than for example the USB mass-storage device class (MSC) is that the latter operates at the granularity of a mass storage device block (usually in practice, a FAT block), rather than at the logical file level. In other words, the USB mass storage class is designed to give a host computer undifferentiated access to bulk mass storage, such as compact flash, rather than to a file system, which might be safely shared with the target device (except for specific files which the host might be modifying/accessing). In practice, therefore, when a USB host computer has mounted an MSC partition, it assumes absolute control of the storage, which then may not be safely modified by the device without risk of data corruption until the host computer has severed the connection.“  -sombody from Google
--My Response - "I am totally OK with the SD card not being safe to be mounted.  During the time I choose to be connected (only when transferring files)...I DO want the PC and not the phone to be in complete control of the SD card."
    2)  “MTP is a big improvement over USB mass storage — for devices with lots of internal memory, a manufacturer no longer needs to come up with some hard partition between the USB mass storage and internal storage. Instead, they are all in one partition, with MTP providing access to the directory of media files that would normally be available through USB mass storage. This means there is no longer a need for apps on SD card for such devices, because what used to be the ‘internal SD card’ is in the same partition as where applications are stored. The storage on your device can be used for either applications or media, depending on what you want to put on it. You aren’t stuck with how much space the manufacturer decided to leave for the two areas." -somebody else from Google
--My Response - "I am completely OK with the removable SD card being treated separately.  That is EXACTLY what I want.  I want to keep MY DATA separate and only on the removable SD card.  And all of the stuff that I don't care about...that can be easily reinstalled (apps and such) on the internal memory.  It is a good design.  The phone has enough internal memory that I don't have any trouble with space for Apps (so not a conern at all)."
--My Overall Response - "The loss of flexibility, portability, and usefullness does NOT come close to justifying removal of the USB Mass Storage protocol.  I am still VERY disappointed."
Where is the THUMBS DOWN... and INCORRECT ANSWER?

  • Usb mass storage [FXx]

I know this has been discussed before, but I'm still confused basically with devfs which I find a bit mysterious...
I have a camera and a mp3 player I used to just stick into my slackware box and then mount it on either sda1 or sdb1 - I had the relevant modules loaded already. But I'm finding this difficult with AL...
I recompiled the 2.6.1 kernel with scsi support and usb stuff built as modules. On boot up, I load scsi-mod, sd-mod, usb-storage and usb-uhci from rc.conf. As far as I know, this is all you need to handle mass storage devices.
So, basically I'd really appreciate if someone could provide a real basic guide to where these devices get mounted under AL - I never added anything to fstab before, so I guess I don't need to now...
If I try to mount anything I get the contents of /proc/bus/usb, and the devices file there is not picking up my mass storage devices.
    Any help gratefully received.

thanks for your input dp...sorry I didn't reply sooner.
This is the current situation - I now have loaded the usb modules and the scsi modules you recommended - (sg, sd-mod, sr-mod, scsi-mod). It takes a while but eventually I get some action in /dev.
I now have a /dev/discs/disc1 which I didn't before. This containe disc, generic and part1. I tried to mount part1 with mount -t usbfs but when I checked the mountpoint, it just contained the contents of /proc/bus/usb (a devices file, and 001 & 002).
I also now have a /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0 which contains disc, generic and part1 as well. I get the same results if I try to mount this part1. I never had a problem with usb beofre, so please excuse my ignorance! The documentation at linuxusb.org is not too great (well, for my needs at least).
    Dmesg is saying:

    Well, it's just a sample;)
I'd really appreciate some tips on where to go from here - am I mounting the right thing, doing it the wrong way??

  • USB Mass Storage Device - ?

Shuffle shows up as a USB Mass Storage Device under the drive (USB Port) i plug it into.
It will not take an update or reformat.
Wondering if it is possible that the factory format could be erased and now the unit is just being recognized as a storage device and unable to be used in the manner it was originally intended for...MUSIC.?
What does it mean when you get a message "Media in Drive - Changed" ?
Fixed many other ipods in past but only one shuffle so far....now this one has me going...no clue what else i can do to it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

i think it was trying to read the shuffle when i wanted to format and restore.
i never did get it to work.
no way of knowing now..i just got through tearing into this one to make one good shuffle out of the two i was working on.
all was good till i went to put the slide bar on/off switch back on....broke the switch again.
    do you have a switch?
    thanks

  • USB Mass Storage Device won't Eject/Unmount

My brother bought a Sanyo ICR-B180NX digital voice recorder last year to use with his iBook. It was working very well up until about August of 2005. At that point, the recorder would mount on the desktop, and he could get all the files off (it records direct to MP3 format rather than WMV, so he can edit his files very easily), but when it came time to eject it, the device icon would disappear and then immediately re-appear on the desktop. The display on the voice recorder remained static at the "Connect" screen.
I believe this happened in conjunction with some sort of OS update, as it was a "sudden" thing. We can't quite recall what happened between the times it worked and the time it stopped working.
I have tried the device on a PC, and it works the way it should, so I don't believe there's anything wrong with it.
Now, I know the system requirements on the website say that you must have Windows, but a statement from a support company (we returned it to the place where we got it, and they sent it out for repairs, and it came back with a letter) states that the device does act as a generic Mass Storage device, and thus may work with most systems.
All my other USB storage devices (ie. SanDisk 12-in-1 card reader, SanDisk Cruzer Titanium 2GB, iPod Photo), and FireWire devices (ie. WiebeTech TrayDock Extreme) work fine and unmount fine.
Does anyone know of any changes to the way Mass Storage devices are ejected in the current iteration of the OS? I haven't had a chance to test the device under an older OS, but will soon.
Alternately, if anyone has any suggestions regarding replacements (not really looking forward to that, given this recorder cost almost $300CAD), let me know. We need a device that can plug in via USB and transfer files to his iBook which he can edit together (he's a newspaper reporter in training, and needs to edit the interviews to take out such things like dead air, etc).
    Thanks!
    Mike Ma.

    Hi
+USB mass storage device. An error occurred during the installation of the device the data is invalid+
This typical error message appears if the installation of external USB devices failed.
Why? This is not easy to say
What you could do firstly is to clean your registry using the freeware software called CCleaner (Google for that).
Install it and clean your OS and the registry entries.
After cleaning access the device manager and remove all USB root hubs and all USB Host controllers from the device list and reboot the notebook.
New reboot should cause a new installation of USB drivers.
Finally try to connect and try to install your external USB devices again.

  • Windows 7 64-bit not loading USB mass storage driver

I have a rather strange problem with my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  Everything seems to work fine except for USB mass storage devices.  I have USB keyboard, mouse and even a USB audio (wireless headset) all working fine on the computer.  But
any USB external drive, thumdrive or USB card reader with flash cards inserted into the USB port of my computer won't work.
Windows keeps reporting that it is unable to find the driver.  When I go into the Device Manager console and choose to manually update the driver, then point it to the C:\Windows (with search for sub-directories enabled), it detects the USB Mass Storage
driver but complains that it is unable to load it.  The exact message is this:  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered error while attempting to install it.  USB Mass Storage Device.  The system cannot find the file
    specified.
This happens to ALL USB Mass storage device, and it doesn't matter which port I plug the device into.
Here's the weird thing, I have VMware Workstation installed on this computer and if I power on a VM that runs Windows 7 32-bit as the Guest OS and connect the USB storage devices to the guest OS via VMware Workstation, the USB storage devices work!
So it would appear that the USB ports are functioning properly but for some reasons, my Windows 64-bit is unable to load the driver.
Any idea how to fix this besides a "nuke it from orbit" and format/reinstall Windows?
    Thanks.

I'm very excited to finally have a solution for this problem. Thank You Balaji for figuring this out. I've been struggling with this for a number of years, and had only one USB Hard Drive that worked. I too have VMware workstation, and had the missing files
in "c:\windows\inf." I can say with certainty that I did not delete the files from that folder, but something is common in both of our situations. Maybe it has to do with VMware, and some of it's updates over the years. I'm also using nCompute to share out
a networked desktop via the wire.
One more thing worthy of mention is this machine was an update from Windows Vista, and the USB hard drive that worked was configured back than. So although I could never add another HD, at least I had the one.
Now with having copied over the files, I can plugin other USB enclosures with different drives and they too are working.
Like you mentioned, it was always possible to use USB devices within my Virtual Machines, so it was clear that the USB ports were functional. I actually got the files from a clean Windows 7 VM, copying out the \windows\inf folder and doing a compare between
the the real one and the virtual one. I found the two missing files you mentioned, along with 8 others. I went ahead and included them all in your fix.
It worked, Amazing. Thanks again. :O)

I am experiencing a quite vexing problem with my USB Mass Storage devices, when I plug one in I get the following error in my dmesg:

In the /dev/ folder on the device shows up, not the partitions. When I try to open it with cfdisk I get "FATAL ERROR: Cannot open disk drive". I am pretty sure it iss neither a hardware problem with my laptop or my usb devices, as they both work on my dual-booted Ubuntu. My usb ports in general seem to be functioning, I can still charge a phone through them and use my built in USB webcam.
I am not sure where exactly this issue lies, it started after I upgraded to 3.0.7 (among other updates) from the normal repositories, but still persisted after I downgraded to 3.0.6.
My attempts at Googling have so far revealed mainly hardware errors, which don't seem to fit with the devices working on another OS on the same pc.
    Thanks.

  • Arch instance living on USB mass storage device is very slow

I installed an instance of Arch on a USB stick.  This is a full installation, not a ramdisk-based "installer" or anything.  However, this little guy is very, very slow.  Sometimes, I have to wait for almost a minute between writes while the UI locks up (XFCE4, in case you're curious).
I think a lot of the problem comes from iowait load and pending write requests.  I've been considering experimenting with data=writeback, but I've never used this ext option before, and thought I'd ask you guys about it first.  I hear that sudden power failure can lead to pretty severe data loss with writeback enabled.  Anyone have any experience with this?  Are there any other tweaks I can apply to increase performance that would be appropriate for a USB mass storage device?  I have noatime enabled, but that only gives it an almost unnoticeable bump.

  • Conflict w/Other USB Mass Storage

I have tried 2x now to get the iPod Shuffle and my Segate Free Agent USB Mass Storage drive to co-exist to no avail. I have re-lettered the iPod to another drive letter, although it defaulted to G and my Mass Storage is F. I have tried changing USB slot positions, nothing. I looked at the MS site and looked at the fix for New Drive or Mapped Network Drive not available and at this point have not applied the hot fix. My USB driver is version 5.1.2600.0 from July 2001.
I am about ready to give up on the iPod unless someone has a suggestion.

I was having the exact same problem with a Seagate Freeagent 250GB and 2 different shuffles. I just got it resolved. I had to add a pci usb2 card to my system. I was looking in the device manager and noticed that there was only 1 usb2 controller listed. I guess my system could only handle 1 usb2 device at a time. You'd think one device would default back to usb 1.1, but I guess not.

  • KDE 4.2 and USB Mass Storage , does not write data until unmounted

    Hi,
I have a Nokia phone that I connect for USB mass storage, and KDE 4.2.2 does not seem to write the data to the device until I unmount.
Is there a way to force the write so it happens right away?  It's annoying because I can't see any progress when it copies the data at unmount.
    Later,
    Snorkel

That's kinda the way linux does things, not specifically a KDE issue.  It's so that the system only has to write out to the media only once, even if you separately add/delete/move 50 different files.
I think you can run 'sync' and that will flush all the file system buffers to disk.
