Z87-GD65 Boot Failure (New PC Build)

Relevant components of the build:
Processor: i7-4770k
MOBO: Z87-GD65
RAM: Crucial Ballistix 2x8gb DDR3 1600 1.5v
GPU: EVGA GTX 770
PSU: EVGA 750W
CPU Cooler: CM EVO 212
The problem is a common one I've seen on this forum with other MOBOs, and I want to make sure the MOBO is actually the problem before submitting an RMA.  So I've got the MOBO on a non-conductive surface (its box) and have one stick of ram in the #2 slot with the GPU plugged in and powered.  The GD65 has a power button onboard and after pressing it, everything is powered for about 2 seconds then it turns off immediately.  2 seconds later, everything turns back on then off again, and this cycle repeats until you turn off the power from the PSU.
I've tried both the PSU and GPU on my old computer and they both work fine.  I cant try the processor in my other computer because it's an older mobo and the i7-4770k doesnt fit in the CPU slot.  I've tried the ram in different configurations, but to no avail.  I have both the 24-pin main power and the 8-pin supplemental power plugged in from the PSU to the MOBO.  There are no pins on the bottom of my processor, only small rectangles, and none of them appear to be bent or snapped.  In the socket in the MOBO, there is a section of pins on the left that are designed to stand straight up and another section of pins on the right that appears to be all slanted (by design, I presume).  None of the pins in the socket on the MOBO appear to be bent or out of place (unless the section where all the pins are slanted are ACTUALLY supposed to be standing straight up, then I'm screwed lol).
So, does this sound like a MOBO problem or a CPU problem?  Or are there other things I can try to narrow down the problem?  Or should I just RMA the MOBO and hope for the best when the new one comes in?
Thanks,
Art

That reset switch is not for clear CMOS it is for restart PC (warm reboot) while it is already running.
Clear CMOS button is on the rear of MB (I/O panel) between PS/2-USB ports and S/PDIF out.

  • Msi Z87-GD65 Booting Failure With eSATA Drives

    Hi Folks,
Before I go down the (probably ill-fated) Customer Service path I thought I'd address the forum here on a little problem I'm having with my Z87-GD65.
IN essence, if I have a hard drive connected to my eSATA port the PC won't boot.  I'm using an ICYDOCK 4 bay external enclosure (MB561US-4SB if interested).  If the drive itself is on but the HD trays are ejected then it boots.  If any of the drives are secured then it'll hang at a post-BIOS/pre-Windows screen where all I get is a blinking cursor for about 30 seconds and then it disappears to a plain black screen.  If the device is powered off then it boots.
I've checked the BIOS with one of the HDs running and it doesn't appear within my boot list - in fact, except for one selection in the bios allowing me to disable eSATA there really isn't much I can do there.
I've upgraded my BIOS to 1.30 from 1.00 and the process seems to move a bit further - now I get the oh-so-pretty ugly Windows logo and that's all.
When I do actually boot the PC with the ICYDOCK off then I'm able to get into Windows normally, and turn on the ICYDOCK.  After a few seconds all 4 hard drives report in and everything's fine.
I've been using this ICYDOCK for about  a year and a half, with 2 other motherboards (neither were an MSI) and i7 cores, and neither of them caused me any issues.  I remember that neither of those boards had the port multiplier eSATA capability so I had to buy a controller card with that capability.  I could probably dig that up and see if the problem remains.
In case you're wondering, if it helps, I built a Msi Z87-GD65/4770 i7 - based PC with 2 internal 2TB Hard Drives, and 16gb RAM.  I already mentioned the ICYDOCK.  I used LiveUpdate to install all the latest drivers & BIOS before uninstalling it.
I build & repair PCs for a living so I'm pretty familiar with what's going on with the system.  I figure that there must be something happening between the BIOS and Windows "handoff" of the ICYDOCK, but I'm damned if I can figure out just what.

More information please. PSU, OS being used, etc..
    Live Update is best uninstalled. Flash UEFI/BIOS the safer way;

  • MSI Z87 GD65 boot troubles

I recently built my own  computer,  using an MSI Z87 GD65 board, and it worked fine for about 2 weeks, then suddenly my computer bluescreened, now when I power it on it no longer boots (doesn't even reach bios screen) tried resetting cmos, any ideas? :s

    - Start with the BIOS swich. ...hows it with the second BIOS chip?
    - Testing your PSU. Is it stating ok green to black on 20/24pin connection.
Edit: Heres video How to do it from Corsair on Youtube.
    - Take all out of your case and use only parts you need (MB, PSU, CPU and monitor)

  • Z87-GD65 Boot Problems With 16GB installed

    Hi All,
    My machine spec
    Intel 4770
    16gb Corsair Vengeance Pro
MSI GTX 780 Twin Frozr Gaming
    Corsair RM850 power supply
    SanDisk extreme II 240GB SSD
    MD Bios 1.8 default settings.
and that's all I have plugged in the board at the moment.
The problem is once I add the second stick of ram and do a real cold boot (like the next day) the machine doesn't boot. The leds just keep cycling.
The funny thing is if I take the second stick out it will boot. Then if I add the second stick back it boots fine and will work all day, no blue screens.
Then next day back to it not booting and cycling leds. I've tried swapping the ram sticks etc and they are in slots 2 and 4.
one other thing I've noticed is it takes a long time to shut down. I'm taking a minute after windows closes.
This is my second GD65 the first one wouldn't boot at all with the GTX plugged in and the same with my old 7870.
    any ideas??
    cheers
    Johnny

Don't the Sandisk Exterme 2's use a Marvell chipset?
The previous generation SanDisk Extreme SSD used a SandForce controller, with largely unchanged firmware. This new drive however moves to a much more favorable combination for companies who have their own firmware development team. Like Crucial’s M500, the Extreme II uses Marvell’s 88SS9187 (codename Monet) controller. "courtesy of Anandtech.
Its time to do a manual memory setting. Set it to 1600 at 1,545 or the closest you can get to 1,575 and ensure your memory timings are set at 9.9.9.24. Retest

  • Z87-GD65 boot problems

Hello, my pc has trouble booting up, whenever it starts it runs for about 2-3 seconds and turns off and goes into a boot-loop. However i have found a way to work my way around this by pressing the power button longer (during the boot problem) and after that it boots up just fine. What do you guys think that is wrong with it? Whenever it has been running and i restart the pc it boots without problem. It is only there when i boot up in the morning when the PC has been turned off for a while

Kind of indicates a power problem. Recommend you try it with a fan running directly off the PSU. A HDD is not what I am trying to convey here. If you have any sleep or hibernate features enabled, the fan connected directly may be the key to it starting when you hit the button normal.
RAM test is still a good idea though.

  • Fans and Z87-GD65 new build question

Hi.  I am waiting on all my parts for a new build this week.  I've only done one build before and that was over 4 years ago (i5-750 / MSI P55-GD65).  My question is regarding fans and how to control them on the Z87-GD65 mobo.  My case comes with three 140 mm 3-pin fans and a 3 fan 3-speed manual fan controller.  I've never used a fan controller before and would prefer to use SpeedFan or the BIOS to adjust speed fans based on CPU/GPU temperatures.  Will I be able to set up automatic speed control in BIOS or SpeedFan for all 3 fans with this motherboard?  Or do I need PWM fans to do so?  What if I want to install 2 extra fans?  Any help would be appreciated!
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX_RD 68.5 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    Memory: G.Skill Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB 2.5" Solid State Disk
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

Those connected to the fan controllers are controlled through their buttons (or whatever to adjust the speed). Those connected to motherboard, are connected through a software, such as Command Centre (which in my opinion is great for this).
Not sure how many connectors do you have on the motherboard, but I think there's x2 CPUFan and x3 SysFan. That means you can have x5 fans connected to them. But you can either purchase a Y splitter which will let you connect 2 fans into a single socket (I am using one Y splitter) or just get proper fan controller.

  • Failed to Install The New Preview Build. Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.

    Hello,
I'm having issues upgrading my Windows 10 Technical Preview installation build 9879 to a newer build that's become available late January 23rd.
I am installing the new upgrade in a Hyper-V virtual machine and get the following error:
Failed to install the new preview build, please try again later. 0x80246007
    What could be the problem?
Previously I've had messages that Windows cannot be upgraded on a computer with less than 2 Gbyte of RAM. That's a Hyper-V VM with dynamic memory and I was highly surprised to see this error; never had this before. Had to set 2048 Mbytes as a minimum memory
for this VM. Now that I have this 80246007 error code.
When looking up System log, the following error messages are listed multiple times:
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80246007: FBL_AWESOME1501 9926 Professional.
The errors are returned for the Event ID 20 by WindowsUpdateClient
in task category Windows Update Agent..
    I reviewed the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability
registry key as suggested in Windows
Insider stuck on build 9841 - "No new preview build was found", and here is what it shows:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsSelfHost\Applicability]
    "BranchName"="fbl_awesome1501"
    "ThresholdRiskLevel"="low"
    "ThresholdOptedin"=dword:00000001
Note, when attempting to install the downloaded update from a native boot, installation starts with no errors.
However, since setup is not supported for a natively booted VHD files, it does not proceed further showing a message that installation on virtual drives is not supported.
Looks like Setup is having problems installing in a Hyper-V virtual machine.
Possibly, some ESD files got corrupted during downloading? Is it possible to remove them and re-download missing files? (I, however, noticed that Windows seems to re-download upgrade files after you restart 9879 and attempt to check for a new build.
Any clue why installing under VM causes 9926 to fail?
    Thank you in advance.
Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

    Hi,
According to the error message, this problem seems like update package installation failed during system upgrade.
You can try to remove ESD file which locate at boot of C drive and upgrade the system again for test.
On the other hand, make sure the system 9879 installed all Windows pushed updates before system upgrade.

  • Z87-GD65 Enable "Windows 8/8.1 Feature" = Won't boot, Disabled = Boots up

How do I enable Windows 8/8.1 Feature in the Z87-GD65 Settings?   When I turn it on, Windows 8.1 no longer will boot.  (see video below of what happens)   Is this because I didn't have it enabled BEFORE I installed Windows?  If so can I fix this without a re-install?   My C: is a 120GB SSD.    I have about 12 other 3TB Hard Drives installed as well with 2 secondary SATA cards installed.

Quote from: pandaz on 02-April-14, 13:46:01
I got the same problem before and after doing some research, I found out the ff. Info:
When set the Windows 8/8.1 Feature to Enabled then the system could only boot to Windows if your windows is installed using UEFI mode.
If you didn't install Win8 in UEFI mode then you will need to reinstall your Win 8.1 using UEFI mode.
The SSD drive was originally in a Zotac ZBOX ID84 mini-PC.    I turned the zbox UEFI mode on before the install was done.
I transplanted the SSD drive into the new Z87-GD65 based computer.    Windows 8.1 booted right up (only after a firmware update)
So technically yes, UEFI mode was enabled, but was a different computer. (but then again maybe it wasn't?)
Will the computer boot faster if I reinstall from scratch with Windows 8/8.1 Feature enabled?    What else works better/faster with this feature enabled?  (more stable etc?)
Basically, is it worth the hassle of starting fresh?  I have a very complicated home server/media center combination setup.

  • Z87-GD65 wont boot from any drive, please help!

I desperately need your help on this issue. And thanks in advance for any answer!
    I have a brand new Z87-GD65 Mainboard.
When I select my boot device in BIOS all I get is: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
In BIOS I can find all my hardware (CPU, Drives, HDDs, DVD,... RAM) everything is shown correctly. Nothing missing there, all parts shown by correct values.
I cant boot through my DVD Drive or external USB Drive (on both I have Windows 7 which I want to install on my new system). The Windows DVD is also working properly, I checked it on my old PC.
No matter what Boot priority/device I choose (I think Ive tried them all by now) "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" is what I get after "save & reboot".
My BIOS Version is E7845IMS V1.8.
Any suggestions, what am I missing?
thank you very much for any help!

It was my DVD Rom Drive that could not read the DVD!!!!
What I Still dont understand is that it also didnt boot from a bootable HD through USB.
    thanks for your help!
Glad you got it working....probably the controller got confused from the faulty DVD rom....

  • MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming Motherboard Booting Windows 7 Trouble

Hi guys, today I bought the MSI Z87-GD65 Mobo, 2 Sticks of 4GB RAM and the Intel i7 4770. I bought these to upgrade my old system and the only other parts im using is my Nvidia GTX570, PSU and my 2TB Seagate HDD.
Everything hardware works normal, no abnormal signs.
My problem is when it boots up, it says "find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /win7ldr. Error 15: File not found"
I've tried using my windows 7 disc and it says all my stuff is still there and the startup troubleshooter doesn't find any issues. I tried putting my RAM in properly and its in nicely. (they are in the 3rd and 4th slot though) My power is fine, its just the BIOS isn't booting it =(
    -The BIOS is updated
    -No Hardware faults
Note: when i press any key to continue, it comes up with GRUB4DOS and has options like: "Windows 7 with SLIC Loader (Default)"
Please help me if you know anything!

Its a fresh install of Windows 7, i had to do it to fix my original problem =/
Update: I changed the RAM and put them in the slots u suggested, no change.
Sorry, when i post my last anser, i didnt know your new problem
Sounds like old problem from time of XP to Vista.
Firsth. Take out that USB connection of your headset from PC.
Secend. Uninstall any driver that headset (or you) may have installed to your OS.
    Third. Run registercleaner program.
Fourth. Shotdown PC and then start again (dont just reboot!)
Fifth. Download and/or Install drivers for that USB headset.
    Sixth. Reboot that PC.
    Seventh. Insert that USB connection.
I hope this helps! Cheers, Mummy
If not i would try to ubdate intel chipset drivers(if MSI ones dont work, i would go to Intel site and try them from there) and if those dont help then another reinstall of OS and member to inser USB device after installing drivers for the device.

  • MSI Z87-GD65, Freezing while gaming, then reboot loop/bsod/total failure.

    Hey fellow MSI'ers
Im hoping to find a solution for my problem i have been getting. I build a custom gaming rig a few months ago (specs below)
Sinds a couple of days iv been getting wierd problems, System runs fine, i can do everything watch movies do work stuff. But when i start gaming it will work great for about 15-30 minutes, then i hear a click/beep thru the sound system, and a total pc freeze, screen freezes nothing works.
So i hit the reboot, then the system decides to turn itself off and get into a reboot loop, turning on for few seconds then turning off again for a few back on for a few, etc etc.
Only way i can get it running is pull the power, make sure the Motherboard has no charge left, then wait a bit and replug the power. Most times it will boot up fine and story starts at part 1 again.
First off i thought it would be temperature, tho im running a almoost ull watercooled system, (Ramm + cpu + video) and i put up temp controlls on my seconds screen, and they never got above 35, on any of the components.
Now seeing my build it is extreemley hard to quickly test a diffirent component, been running memtest with no problems, But when i do graphx/cpu stresstest/benchmark i get the same issue.
As i stated before it has been running perfectly for few months.
I read that PSU might be a problem, compatability wise with Haswell, tho then it wouldnt have worked for so long and just now giving these strange problems.
    What i tryéd so far:
    -Reinstall windows
    -Flash bios
    -clear bios
    -unplug as much as possible
    -diffirent ramm
-Running with or without crossfire enabled.
All same problems, i hope somebody has a idea without having to pull apart my custom build.
    Specs:
    -Cooler Master HAF XB
    -Intel Haswell 4770k
    -MSI Z87-GD65
    -2x Asus 7970 in Crossfire.
    -Corsair Dominator GT 2x4gb

UPDATE: Been running bencharmks/stresstest from onboard graphix, both cards disconnected. (lots of towels to be sure) and runs without problems, tho reallo low fps but thats expected.
Going to see if i can run 1 card at a time, see if i can cause the problem to happen again.
So did you agtually try it?
Yep, bleeding is nice job and dooing it right on all steps is needed so yeah great, but if your CPU can handel the stress and you have tested the PSU then i cant see other way.
Tip: take the hard loop, pipe, bridge(betwean the blocks away and add two 90angle fittings with long tobe, so you can rest each card away the pc 1 at time that way you dont need to bleed the system bitwean.
(allso rest of the toops needs to be so long that it can be far away...)
And yes you need reg edit your SATA drivers like xmad sayd, if you like to change IDE to RAID.
P.s. nice build! Hope you get it working
Edit: You dont need to insert that PSU in the case, just connect wires whrere they need to be, at the momen for testing.
Edit2: My current needs little service and update( add backplate, water change, delid cpu and moving GPU to bottom slot).
Edit3: Wait that one 120mm low Rad keeps your sytem 32c??? Damn you have great chips, cold house or software issue. need for delid main is the heat i dont like and i have hmm 10 times that space to get heat off :D

  • Z87-GD65 Problems - Currently Won't Boot

So after slowly purchasing parts over the year, I finally have all my parts together, started the build and have run into multiple problems with my Z87-GD65 GAMING motherboard. First I tried using an Intel i5-4690K CPU. I would get power to the entire computer but no video signal. After looking through the forums here, I found the following post saying that I would need another CPU to flash the BIOS to a newer BIOS so the i5-4690K would be supported:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=181784.0
Not being able to just borrow a spare CPU, I purchased an Intel Pentium G3220 just so I could flash the BIOS. Now, I put in the new CPU and the computer only gets power for a fraction of a second before shutting itself off. I'm getting extremely frustrated and feel like I just wasted another $50. Any kind of help would be appreciated.
    My specs are as follows:
CPU: Intel Core i5-4690k (tried swapping with Pentium G3220
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
    Motherboard: MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming
    Memory: 16 GB (2 x 8GB) Kingston HyperX
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX (have tried with and without for both CPUs)
    Storage: 120GB Kingston HyperX SSD
1TB Western Digital Caviar Black HDD
    Power Supply: Corsair CX600

So after going to remove the motherboard from my case, I discovered that my JPWR2 became loose. I just plugged it in securely and now I finally have post. Totally explains why the unsupported CPU worked while the supported CPU didn't. I was able to flash the BIOS and now the i5-4690K is working. Now I feel like an idiot for not noticing it before. Thanks, guys for the help and for your patience.

  • New Z87-GD65 USB Issues?

Trying to find out if I need to return a newly installed board to the store for an exchange. I have another PC, with this same board, that was built back in August, and it works great.
If I go into the BIOS, sometimes the USB drive is detected and sometimes not. Had to reboot 3 or 4 times to even get it to see a usb drive to load Windows 8.1.
In windows it will detect a usb flash drive about half the time. I have an ASUS N-53 USB Wireless stick that has only been detected one time. NOTE - All of the items I have plugged in work without fail, on the same board, in another PC. I thought it first it was maybe the front ports in the case (Fractal Design R4) but it has the same issue on the backside ports that are coming directly off the board.
I have reset the bios to defaults and also flashed the bios to latest. Also tried it on bios B to make sure it wasn't something specific to BIOS A. Since I was having the issues before even installing Windows, I'm going with a faulty board. Before I go through the trouble of returning the board, is their anything else I can do to check?

    As a follow-up...
I went back to the store and did an exchange. The new board is working like a champ, so I assume the USB controller was bad on the original. Just got unlucky on that last one.
As I stated previously, this is my second Z87-GD65 and I really like it. I would recommend.

  • Will Z87 GD65 Gaming boot with 4790k in order to update BIOS?

    So, I have a Z87 GD65 Gaming motherboard.
I was planning on buying a 4770k cpu, but changed my mind to 4790k. The motherboards supports 4790k in the last release of BIOS.
Do i have to buy a supported CPU (or send to a local store) to update BIOS or can I boot directy with the 4790k and update?
    Thanks.

board needs to be at least at bios 1.9 to even post with a Haswell refresh cpu. While 4790K is officially supported with the later bios 1.A it should at least post with 1.9. Therefor a boar manufactured before 2014-02-24 will not work out of the box with a 4790K and a supported Haswell cpu to flash or update by a shop will be needed to use the cpu.
