Z87-GD65 pulsing sound + overclocking + stress test

When I run a CPU stress test, I hear a slight pulsing sound coming from the motherboard. It is a pulsating sound that almost sounds like a chirping bird. As soon as I turn the stress test off, the sound goes away. I am concerned with this as I have read online that it could be a capacitor or resistor producing this sound... which it shouldn't be making any sounds... least not sounds heard by the human ear. So, I am wondering if this is a sign of a bad motherboard? Should I ask for it to be RMA'd?
With that mentioned, I have noticed peculiar behaviors while overclocking... a stable overclock that has run for hours will all of a sudden become unstable... so perhaps that is the reason? the oscillating noise is a sign that the motherboard is bad?
I am concerned about this as in all my years of overclocking, I never heard a noise coming from my system motherboard when stressing the CPU... this is a first for me.
Any ideas or thoughts on what I should do?
My motherboard is the MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming mobo.
I have an i7-4770K CPU overclocked to 4.3GHz... just bought the things I need to delidd so I can go higher.
I am using the NZXT Kraken closed loop water cooling system.
32GB of DDR3 Memory running at 2133 speed....
I appreciate any tips or advice.
Thank you,

Things are really looking good now!!!
Another guide, that was referenced by the first guide I listed, taught me everything I needed to know about Haswell and stability. http://www.overclock.net/t/1411077/haswell-overclocking-thread-with-statistics
As recommended, by the good folks in this post, I first set out to get my memory super stable as well as my Ring. I set my ring to default [35] with default voltage set manually. I then set my memory to 1600 2,9,9,9,24 with voltage at 1.55v. I then started overclocking solely on multiplier and upping the voltage. By the way, I delidded my i7-4770K and used liquid metal on the CPU die and the best thermal paste I could find on the IHS... OMG!! My temps are crazy low now!!!
Anyways, I found a very stable 4.5GHz overclock running at 1.29v. While running Prime95, Small FFT's test, my temps never go above 75 degrees C. That is amazing!!! Considering that before the delid, my temps were closer to 100 degree C.
So, right now, this is how I am set and VERY stable. Based on the guide above, I will now start testing how high I can take Ring with 100% stability. After that, I will then start testing how high I can take my memory.... however, based on the good information in this post from very seasoned folks as well as the guide above, I am really not too concerned with whether or not I can get my memory to run at XMP settings of 2133... because right now, 1600 is completely stable and I am very happy about that!!!
The key statement, that I can make about my experience with Haswell is, BE PATIENT!!! I made a huge mistake by just overclocking everything at once not knowing what I was doing and just trying to emulate similar specs people had discovered while overclocking. That was bad on me! I should have done more research and learned to start testing one element at a time.
So, thanks again everyone for your input!!
Cheers,

Got My Z87-GD65 back from RMA.When i try to set my 4770k to 4.2ghz in bios its reverts to 39 only.I have flash to latest bios and still same thing. It wont let me overclock at all.I switched to bios B,and still locked at 3.9ghz.Even OC Genie won't overclock it.Did i get a worst board than the one i RMA'd.The one i sent in had a bricked bios A,but B still worked.Even my ram i set the xmp profile to 2400,but only does 1600.

  • Overclocking on the Z87-GD65 with i7-4770K

Ok, so the last board i got from MSI was a Z68 board with a 2500k and i was able to overclock it pretty well up to 5.0. But now with the upgrade i just did i got the Z87-GD65 gaming board with the new i7-4770k and i cant even get it to go over 4.2. half the stuff that is in the bios i haven't ever seen before so im not sure what all this "ring" stuff is and whatnot but would anyone like to explain some of this stuff to me possibly on what i have to do to do some actual Overclocking with this thing? if anyone does know?
    Thanks,
    Mike
If you need to know any other info just let me know, ill try to get back asap. Thanks

Just got my 4770k and GD65 installed.
Love the board and the UEFI bios, my first MSI one for ages.
Offtopic: I did notice that i couldn't disable the Intel Raid OROM, even with  boot set to UEFI only, it always flashes up on startup. Solved it by updating the Satadriver.ffs in the bios from version v12.0.0.1783 included in bios 1.2 with the latest 12.7.0.1910.
Ontopic: Little bit overwhelming all the new bios options after SB/IB.
I just went for a quick and easy 4.4ghz
    CPU Ratio (44)
    CPU Core Voltage Mode (Auto)
CPU Core Voltage Offset Mode (+)
    CPU Core Voltage Offset (+0.20)
    Ring Ratio(43)
Everything else left at auto in the bios.
I set the ring ratio to one less than CPU (as read that on Techpowerup)
The core voltage offset of +0.20 was just arbitrary but seems to work, can stress test in Aida64 for over an hour no probs. Did half an hour of Prime aswell, but need to do more.
CPU is idling at 800mhz and ~.0.7volts
Fully loaded its 4400mhz and 1.194v in Aida64 with Prime its 1.188v
Temps fully loaded are 65'c with the occasions spike to 71'c on one particular core, So not that much worse than my 3750k at 4.5ghz.
(Thermalright SB-E cooler dual fan, MX4 paste)
Really feel as though I need to tweak/change some more settings though !!!!
I didn't touch LLC, as i see no option in the bios anywhere for this ?(Is it called something else now?)
Did I miss anything in the bios that can help, power options or something ??

Start upping your voltage, my chip needs [email protected] and for stability at 4.4 it needs 1.38.
Those guys on YouTube definitely got a better chip
Once you get enough voltage to boot into windows without bsod start stability testing. Make sure to set volts to override

  • MSI Z87-GD65, Freezing while gaming, then reboot loop/bsod/total failure.

    Hey fellow MSI'ers
Im hoping to find a solution for my problem i have been getting. I build a custom gaming rig a few months ago (specs below)
Sinds a couple of days iv been getting wierd problems, System runs fine, i can do everything watch movies do work stuff. But when i start gaming it will work great for about 15-30 minutes, then i hear a click/beep thru the sound system, and a total pc freeze, screen freezes nothing works.
So i hit the reboot, then the system decides to turn itself off and get into a reboot loop, turning on for few seconds then turning off again for a few back on for a few, etc etc.
Only way i can get it running is pull the power, make sure the Motherboard has no charge left, then wait a bit and replug the power. Most times it will boot up fine and story starts at part 1 again.
First off i thought it would be temperature, tho im running a almoost ull watercooled system, (Ramm + cpu + video) and i put up temp controlls on my seconds screen, and they never got above 35, on any of the components.
Now seeing my build it is extreemley hard to quickly test a diffirent component, been running memtest with no problems, But when i do graphx/cpu stresstest/benchmark i get the same issue.
As i stated before it has been running perfectly for few months.
I read that PSU might be a problem, compatability wise with Haswell, tho then it wouldnt have worked for so long and just now giving these strange problems.
    What i tryéd so far:
    -Reinstall windows
    -Flash bios
    -clear bios
    -unplug as much as possible
    -diffirent ramm
-Running with or without crossfire enabled.
All same problems, i hope somebody has a idea without having to pull apart my custom build.
    Specs:
    -Cooler Master HAF XB
    -Intel Haswell 4770k
    -MSI Z87-GD65
    -2x Asus 7970 in Crossfire.
    -Corsair Dominator GT 2x4gb

UPDATE: Been running bencharmks/stresstest from onboard graphix, both cards disconnected. (lots of towels to be sure) and runs without problems, tho reallo low fps but thats expected.
Going to see if i can run 1 card at a time, see if i can cause the problem to happen again.
So did you agtually try it?
Yep, bleeding is nice job and dooing it right on all steps is needed so yeah great, but if your CPU can handel the stress and you have tested the PSU then i cant see other way.
Tip: take the hard loop, pipe, bridge(betwean the blocks away and add two 90angle fittings with long tobe, so you can rest each card away the pc 1 at time that way you dont need to bleed the system bitwean.
(allso rest of the toops needs to be so long that it can be far away...)
And yes you need reg edit your SATA drivers like xmad sayd, if you like to change IDE to RAID.
P.s. nice build! Hope you get it working
Edit: You dont need to insert that PSU in the case, just connect wires whrere they need to be, at the momen for testing.
Edit2: My current needs little service and update( add backplate, water change, delid cpu and moving GPU to bottom slot).
Edit3: Wait that one 120mm low Rad keeps your sytem 32c??? Damn you have great chips, cold house or software issue. need for delid main is the heat i dont like and i have hmm 10 times that space to get heat off :D

  • Z87-GD65 possible problem

Alright, so I've been posting on some forums with this problem but idk why it never occurred to me to put it on here..considering I do have an MSI board.  I've been having freezing problems with my new pc build lately, the build is...
    Intel i5 4670k(stock cooler)
    MSI Z87-GD65
    EVGA Nvidia GTX 660
Samsung 840 EVO 350 GB SSD
    Crucial Ballistix 2x4gb 1600 ram
    Corsair CX750M
    Corsair Carbide 200r case
Now I've ruled out the video card, the RAM, and the SSD through testing. So the only possibility is problems with the motherboard, processor, or PSU.  Now the computer seems to randomly freeze, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes an hour or so, sometimes I'm gaming sometimes it's just downloading a game.  I've had a few ppl suggest overheating and that the heatsink may not be properly mounted on, but as far as I can tell it is and the cpu temps aren't going above 55 during gaming, and idle around 37.  I realize the stock cooler isn't going to cut it for long so I do have a plan for water cooling that I'm getting within the next week or so.  So I guess if heat is the issue than that should fix it, but I have a feeling it may be the mobo, or maybe I haven't set something properly(although I've checked over that a few times and everything seems to be set properly, nothing is overclocked).  Now earlier I pulled a stick of RAM out and was running on one stick, and it seemed to be working but I didn't have more than an hour so I can't say with 100% certainty that it solved the problem or maybe it was just taking a bit longer to freeze than usual.  So maybe it has something to do with a bad DIMM slot? because I got replacment ram and it's still freezing and I have a hard time believing I got 4 bad sticks of RAM in a row.  So if this is sounding familiar to anyone and knows anything about this problem I would really appreciate some input.

I have the same problem . Random shutdowns . I test all the components in others PC and all are OK.  I test with G-Skill Ram, Corsair Ram, OCZ ram. Anyone have any idea?

  • MSI Z87-GD65 SLI problem

I have been using the z87-gd65 motherboard with an msi gtx 770 since they both came out, and they have both been working great.   I recently just purchased a second msi gtx 770 for SLI, however when I enable SLI, and try to play ANY game it will either crash immediately or run the game and the screen will flicker very bad.  Both cards are functioning great if used individually as a single card. Has anyone else run into any SLI issues with this motherboard?   Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
so far some of things I have tried to no avail are...
    -updated motherboard bios
-updated both video card vbios individually
    -tested each card individually
    -tested each pci-express slot individually
    -replaced SLI bridge connector
    -reset BIOS defaults
-tested all available nvidia drivers since the gtx 770 was released
-swapped power supplies (both are 850 Watt with 70+ on the 12v rail)
-changed various game tweaks/profiles and vsync options at different refresh rates

Quote from: xmad on 16-November-13, 02:00:25
If you need to raise the voltage to run at default speeds, the card is most likely defective. A vbios update sometimes helps, but it should work at default settings.
I had 1 ASUS 660ti OC version, had this for a year and worked great without any changes (updated vbios it cause of GOP). 2 weeks ago i bought a second one, MSI 660ti Power Edition OC (also updated vbios cause of GOP). Tested the second one as single as well without issues and without any changes to the voltage.
But running it in SLI mode causes crashes, i personally thought because they are both overclocked and running in SLI that they need a bit more voltage. I've read this in a post as well and it surely solved my SLI crashing issues.

  • MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming EIST is not working

Hi all, my EIST is not working properly, the CPU clock run between 3.7-3.9 all the time (VID 1.153 - 1.219)
    Here is my setup:
    Motherboard and CPU: MSI Z87 GD65 Gaming + 4770K
OS: Clean installed Win 7 SP1 with most updated driver from MSI site.
Bios version: 1.2 (All default settings)
Actually the EIST works before without installing driver ME and chipset driver from MSI site, any advices?
    thanks in advance.

    Hi and welcome,
      to DougQuaid tip.
Allso if you have OC your system, you need to set Ratio mode to Dynamic and voltage mode to Adaptive.
Like in this picture of my BIOS settings. I marked those with yellow.
Warning: After that you shouldent stress test your CPU anymore with Prime95, Occt, or so on programs. Because they could get the MB give too much power to CPU
I just tested those (ME and Chipset) files from MSI and still get my clock and voltage down normaly.
There seams to be new official relice of BIOS 1.3v there too, so you could try that. if yours cot some bug in it.
Also make sure on task manager that your pc isnt doing anything under. Like live Spybot/virus/... -Scans.
I hope these help Cheers, Mummy

  • [GeForceFX] Event: Silent running: Stress test transition: L2 - L1

I'm using 71.25 nvidia drivers (from MSI), and I activated with the coolbit the hidden features. So, cheking the hidden features there is one called: Debbugin... and I've never seen any issue there. But this message apeared:
    Event ID: 106
Event: Silent running: Stress test transition: L2 -> L1
anyone here has a list of these events?    or anyone knows what this could mean?
I've searched on the nvidia forum but right there there aren't solutions  to that issue:
"In system log, i've a lot of this error:
Silent Running: Stress test transition: L2 -> L1
    what is that?
( the temp are normals, idle:54 full:65, no artefacts, everything run fine )...
    What's this error message...?
Answer: I don't know if this will work or not,,but it shouldn't hurt. What it sounds like to me is ur motherboard is having a hard time transitioning your video card from performance 3d to Low Power 3d. If you use Rivatuner you can force a constant performance level. This might help, but if you notice your system rebooting more often then I'd revert back to the original setting."
BTW my vid card temp is 44° C on Idle. Just running D.O.T. enabled in Private.
    thanks in advance
Yo can see in my signature my PC specs.

    Thanks I'll chek it out.

    If you dont believe me
    why shouln't I beleive you?
I was doing some overclocking yesterday (the day that I got the error), my card specs: 390 Core/ 700 Memory. I reached 450 core/ 900 Memory    and I got 6200 points in 3D mark 03    and after the test I saw the error message. I guess you're right, the card got its limit and also suffer some overheating. But I added some cooling solution and now I'll see if I can reach that point without problems.
    thanks

  • Lots of freezes, Z87-GD65

I get a lot of system freezes with my Z87-GD65 box.  Sometimes it will be less than an hour between freezes, other times it can go a few hours.
During a freeze, the sound starts stuttering, creating that nasty fart noise.  Screen freezes.  CPU fan sounds like it's ramping up.  Keyboard dead.
The freezes seem to be random-- firing up deliberately intensive stuff like FurMark or Prime95 won't force it; you'll just be doing nothing hugely intensive and it freezes hard.
When I first installed, a few times I got conventional BSODs.  One in win32k.sys, one in the nVidia drivers, and one in DirectX.  Also, I got a few crash-to-desktop on games (Uncharted Waters Online) Now the failure mode is pretty much always a freeze.
Once, I let it sit for 30 seconds or so, and it made a sound like it was powering down and rebooted.
Other times, if I press "reset" while frozen, it seems to respond by powering down and then back up.  A conventional reset-button press does not respond this way-- just immediate reset.
BIOS version 1.B, updated from 1.8 it shipped with
CPU: 4790K at stock; cooler is a CoolerMaster Seidon 120M
    GPU: MSI GTX770, 2Gb version
Memory: 4x4Gb, Corsair Venegance range, DDR3-1600, clocks 9-9-9.  They're a pretty old set, which only has SPD timings for 1333, but XMP timings for 1600, so I enable XMP timings.
Drives:  Crucial M550 512Gb, Corsair Neutron GTX 240Gb, Samsung HD103UJ 1Tb spinning-rust, LG BD-RE, Samsung DVD-RW.  All ordinary SATA kit.
    PSU: Seasonic 660W Platinum-rated
Sundry: Hauppauge HVR-1250 TV tuner in the topmost PCI-E slot
The entire supporting cast worked fine with a FX-8350 and a 990FXA-GD80v2.
The only non-conventional BIOS settings I use are turning on C1E support and enabling the XMP timings (and manually setting the memory speed selection to 1600)
    Things I've tried:
    * Remove the latest official nVidia drivers, reverting to those installed with Windows (early 340 series, I think).
    * Force PCI-E 2.0 mode on the slot containing the GPU.  This was a reccomendation from another user who had issues with a recent nVidia card on a Z87 board.  It worked for about two hours, then another freeze.
    * Next, I've tried uninstalling the "default" sound drivers-- the ones obtained from Realtek's site.  I'm currently on the default "High definition audio device" drivers.  I noticed, unusually, the drivers on the MSI site are actually more recent than the v2.75 release on Realtek's own site, so I'm trying them.  Audio is via S/PDIF Optical Out to a reciever.

    its memory for sure

    You have 3 PCI-E x16 slots (x8-x4-x4) and 4 PCI-E x1 slots.
On the other hand, your CPU is limited to 16 PCI-E lanes.
Those 3 x RB44Ge routers are PCI-E x4, so you're going to use ALL the PCI-E x16 slots for them.
With the remaining PCI-E lanes you need to be lucky ...

  • Looking for a stable 4.8 ghz (4770k/MSI Z87-GD65 Gaming) BIOS tips?

Yeah I know. It's a lot of volts. But other than deliding it, which I will do soon, I'm looking for any BIOS tips on decreasing the voltage and keeping it from getting the BSOD after an hour of gaming and general use. This whole platform is new to me since my last OC'ing experience was with socket 775/X38.
One approach I was thinking to take is using Aida64's stress test by individually stressing the cpu, cache and memory seperately since all the controllers are individual entities now. That way if the cache is crashing from lack of voltage maybe I can come down on the vcore, or maybe turn off XMP and run at 1333mhz, etc.. If you guys have any BIOS tips I would appreciate the help. Yeah I can do 4.5/1.26 all day long but what fun is that? Thanks!

Nice of you just how you respond to post
Hijack the thread with next to useless replies, sing praises of brand-X, and then the responses are considered not nice? As xmad recommended, open a new thread with all of your systems components. From watching an uncle overclock his MSI Z87 to 50X on air cooling, it was relatively simple with some very slow and careful bits of trial and error done in small increments. It's a poor workman that blames his tools, think of it as a challenge if nothing else.

  • Issues with bios 1A0 Z87-GD65

    Hey !
so i updated my bios to the new 1A0 bios and since then I've got an issue with the PC that it wont shutdown or go to sleep.
I have to force shutdown by pressing the button and after that it works perfectly when i boot again.
The weird thing is last night i could shutdown fine after 16h idle. This has happened twice now so I'm checking if anyone else has the issue or that there is a known bug?

Wow that sounds like it sucks: I've been able to solve tons of problems with my computer, first Z87-G45 (never RMAed) it's been stable a few months and I expect it to be stable indefinitely. The first over four months an official NVidia driver was causing my computer to completely lock up about every six hours, this is the GeForce forms thread from that: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/672846/?comment=4211121. It took me 4 months to finally catch nvstreamsvc.exe leaking, and ultimately lock up the computer. You can see at the end of the topic an NVidia rep says the bug is fixed in the latest version of GeForce Experience, that's all that NVidia had to comment on that bug (pretty pathetic support).
I figured out why the computer wasn't idling to sleep which is in my last reply.
I figured out that Windows 8 picture password failure could have been a virus and I have to enable enhanced 64-bit security features in Internet Explorer. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-security/picture-password-enrollment-failure/c63a5102-daa6-4842-a4fb-2e658e4cab29
I figured out the "Windows Live Photo gallery screen saver themes aren't supported by video card" bug. I have to run the Windows Experience Index test before upgrading to Windows 8.1, crazy Windows bug: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-desktop/screensaver-windows-live-photo-gallery-error-this/26644ec3-9cb5-4214-8bb5-f2882cfff547
I figured out what was causing a %1 on the Windows 8 open with list of photo file types: who would have thought it was caused by QuickTime 7: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6254474
I figured out how to solve an MSI Command Center bug, who would have thought disabled Windows Media Player in Turn Windows features on or off then re-enabling Windows Media player would solve that.
I figured out to get Adobe Illustrator CS2 to work correctly on Windows 8.1 I have to enable XP SP3, and Disable display scaling on high DPI settings compatibility features.
I am just accepting that Intel Rapid Start doesn't work, but hopefully will with driver updates. Just like SLI in the beginning.
Those bugs I figured out on my own by hours upon hours of troubleshooting myself. No support phone call or e-mail was ever helpful at all in figuring out those bugs. Once in a while someone is helpful and is better than me but rarely. I hope you take that with a sense of humor, and I just thought I'd dump some troubleshooting solutions out there, if you ever run into anything.
