ZCM and Mapping Windows Shares

Hi,
I am having a strange issue. I have a VBscript that runs in the Novell Login script when users log on that maps a drive to a Windows share on our Student Management Database server. The script runs fine and maps the drive, however when you go to access the drive it says:
"K: is not inaccessible........incorrect function"
Now here is where it gets strange. On some computers logged on as the same user it works and you can access while on other computers you get the above message. I first thought it was a rights issue but being logged in as the same user on some computers it works. Another thing I found was with ZCM. We have ZCM 11.2.2 installed on our computers. On the computers that they cannot access the drive, and get the message above, if I uninstall ZCM completely I can then log in as that same user on that computer and am able to access the drive. Also if I install ZCM 10.3.2 I am able to access with that user, but as soon as I install ZCM 11.2.2 on the computer then that same user gets the above message trying to access the drive.
Has anyone ran into this or have any thing that I could look for?

Hi Craig,
Thanks for the information. Yeah the VBscript uses a generic account to connect the mapped drive to the server. I will check out some of the GPO settings and see if something is being missed. It is just weird that it is working on some computers but not on others for the same user.

It is also possible some GPO security settings could be blocking things.
Depending on the OS of the Client PC and the OS of the Target Server,
certain GPO settings may be required for a connection to complete
properly. Perhaps some Devices are not getting correct GPO settings.

Welcome to the discussions!
You can adjust the size of the windows to fit one side by side. Just drag the bottom right corner and adjust to fit.
The MB's screen is a little small for that, but it can work if you fiddle with it.

Cannot open Excel files on Windows share and ONLY Excel files

I'm browsing a Windows share and for whatever reason it will not let me open Excel files directly from the network location. If I view the Coverflow, I can see a a preview of the actual file as well as copy it to the desktop and open it.
I receive an error message that says "filename.xls could not be found."
I can open up any other file from the network location, but not Excel files.
I checked the file permissions and they mirror the other file types, it may be worth mentioning that I utilize network synchronization and view these files from a PC as well. I also noticed when I create a new file in that location, it will only appear in OS X and not Windows, but is still completely accessible.
Any help is appreciated!

Active Directory and Windows Share

I have several Mac labs that are working perfecting with the Active Directory client in OS X 10.4.9. I recently made a change to the client and am now creating local home folders for users. Using the network home folders slowed the boot process and affected certain applications when pref files were not deleted properly from the Windows share.
What I would like to do now is have 2 or 3 windows shares mounted automatically for ALL users who log into a computer. Ideally the mounts should be done with the username and password of the user who just authenticated.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how this could be accomplished?

This should be possible using Mac OS X Server in a Golden (or Magic) Triangle scenario with your Active Directory network. This means your Macs would use AD for authentication but your Mac OS X Server would control workstation settings such as auto-mounting drives. The settings could be applied to users and groups from Active Directory.

How do I add Macbook air to my windows network and how do I connect to windows shares from said Macbook?

Finally, I have a "clued in" boss who wanted a Macbook air. I have it, and I can get to the internet by supplying the correct proxy credentials. My issue is trying to connect him to windows shares on my network? I know how to do this cold for adding a PC, But need some 101 on how to take this awesome macbook air and add it to the domain and how to get connected to various shares within my DOMAIN. as well as use network printers (I assume that is pretty easy). . . I should add that I can ping the servers in question, I am just not familiar with how to connect to them via Mac. . .I am sure this is laughably easy, I am the king of making things difficult, I swear!

MDT 2013: bootstrap.ini not applying username and password for share access

I customized my bootstrap.ini file to skip the welcome screen, set keyboard locale, and enter a service account username and password for share access. The welcome screen skip and keyboard locale work beautifully but it's not applying the share username/password/domain
at all.

Basics - Server 2008 R2 - SP1, WDS, MDT 2013
Well all, I've done this at least 20 times today and the deployment share info is still wrong...
Someone else built and messed with this thing so i'm trying to fix it. We have 2 MDT servers and 1 WDS that is on the Production MDT. I've turned the test MDT off.
It was working fine, until I updated the deployment share ... after adding some drivers for the surface pro 3 for the pxe boot

It continues to show up on the client as ||mdt901w8|deploymentshare$ (test server) (pipes for \ since it makes it a link and i'm new)
I've deleted all the .wim and associated files from all locations from the deployment share\boot folder and from the wds remote install\boot\x64\images folder where they are instead of the remote install\boot\images folder that everyone refers to.
I really can't figure this one out... I know it's something simple I'm over looking but I can't see it..
Any ideas..

E4200 router, wmp600n wireless adapters and mapped drives with wpa2 don't work!

I have a file server running windows 2003 and five computers (1 windows 7, 4 windows xp-sp3).
There are two shares on the server.
When the router is setup with wpa2, three of the windows xp machines will have problems with mapped drives. Directly after the drives are mapped, everything works, but 10 or so hours later, users can no longer access these mapped drives and there is no way to reconnect them it seems.
The other two machines (windows 7 and one windows xp machine) have no problems whatsoever.
The only thing that the three computers have in common is that they are also sharing a printer (an hp j4680) attached to one windows xp machine (not the server).
If I set everything to wpa, everything works fine, but of course my wireless network speeds drop to 56mbps.
Thoughts?

Peanut, I appreciate your effort, but I don't think you truly understand what is going on.
FWIW and for those experiencing similar oddities, On a mixed network of Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows 7 machines, several Windows XP machines would on boot up decide that the router was the master browser. This made file shares on the server inaccessible to these machines. All machines were using wmp600n adapters.
All computers had excellent signal strength and could access the internet without fail.
What was not immediately evident to me was I was also having email issues where certain XP machines could not receive or send (sometimes one, sometimes both) pop email. I suspected it was a port blocking issue by the ISP since this problem was intermittent.
What was clear though is that in each of the machines that exhibited the problem that computer was seeing the browser as the browser master. So finally, I swapped out the router with another branded router. This is not the only case of this router behaving this way--in my searches I have run into several other people who have had issues with file sharing so I don't know if it is a model deficiency or firmware issue.
All I know is the all the problems went away with the router switch. File shares work. Email works.
So, I got a bad router that appeared to function properly--assuming this is not the case with other e4200s. I will know after RMAing this one.

Timemachine Succesfully backing up to SMB windows share

Hi After much googling a post on this page

states the following command allows timemachine to backup to any mounted network share, and they are correct. I am succesfully running my 1st backup to a Windows share over SMB. Will keep you posted on how it goes. But here is the command:

I have been running Time Machine on an network SMB mounted partition for a couple of weeks (using the trick where you disabled the time machine disk check

I know it was a bad idea... but I have plenty of SMB space available at my lab, while no real hard disk (until today )
Everything went fine until today, where finally the disk filled up... and I got this in the console

But all the files on this partition amount to 35 gigs... (which is indead more or less the size of one backup)... where are the other 31 gig gone? My explanation is that the space has not been properly recovered after the old backups deletion... (which indeed also explains why backupd deleted ALL but one backups)
In any case, I would advise any SMB mounted partition Time Machine user to NOT rely completely on those backup. I will try to see if one can recover the space in a sparsebundle image... but even so, it makes the whole process dangerous.

Completely... so Iguess only 22 gig of bands were free 9 gigas are in band which are partially used by good data.

Best way to map server shares to drives

I've always used logon.bat for mapping server shares to client network drive letters. However, I'm being told that setting up group policies is the proper way to map network drives. Anyone have any insight on this? It seems that group
policies at this level are kind of buried in Server Essentials, so it makes me think MS didn't intend for Server Essentials to use GPs for things like this.
If GPs is the proper way to map network drives, is there a good howto for this? I didn't have any luck the first time I tried this.

I suggest you try the following.
1. Create a GPO and link it to the relevant users OU.
2. Right clink on the GPO link and select Edit.
3. Select User Configuration and expand Preferences > Windows Settings.
4. Select Drives Map and right click on the right side of the window then select NEW > Mapped Drive
5. within the opened window in the Action select CREATE.
6. Then type the folder location and select a drive letter.
7. Under Show/Hide Drive select Show this drive / show all drives and remember to check the Reconnect box in order to reconnect at log-in.
8. Then navigate to Common Tab. Check the box Item Level Targeting and select Targeting in order to assign to which user group you would like to assign it. Apply and OK
9. Go to CMD and type gpupdate /force
10. logoff/logon the users and test.
You are done. :)

Quicktime would fail to write/export to server windows share with "Error -43: file not found" errors

Summary:
With the combination of Windows 7 and Quicktime 7.x, Quicktime would fail to write/export to server windows share with "Couldn't create output movie storage" and "Error -43: file not found" errors
Steps to Reproduce:
Trying to render to Quicktime files using network shared folders as a destination:
Unable to open file. (-1610153459)
The funny thing: it only happens when there are at least two shared folders mapped on the workstation, and the destination folder used for the rendered movie is not the first one.
If we have only two mapped drives, F: and G: for example, and we try to render something to F:, everything works fine and no error is showed. But, when the destination is the G: drive, rendering never works, the error is showed, but a zero-byte file is created in F: (!!). ODD! If we remap F: drive with a different letter, but a letter BEFORE G:, the problem always happens. If we remap drive F: to any letter AFTER G:, making G: the first available network drive, rendering works. Also, simply unmapping F: and leaving G: as the only connected network folder makes render to work.
We do not have a D: drive in our Windows 7 workstations, they are all C: only.
It is a 100% reproducible problem. We tried with three different Active Directory networks and workstations. It has all of the features of a software bug.
Any help would be appreciated.

The workaround seems to be to use the full path to the servers instead of the mapped mount point (ie //server/z/... instead of Z:/...
Regression:
All versions of quicktime 7 in combination with windows 7 client and more than one smb share point mapped in a letter.
Notes:
All software that uses quicktime movie exports showed this error.

Not sure what file your are referencing? Thanks for your suggestion, however, it's not relavant.
It renders fine if you render to either the UNC path or the first mapped drive.
i.e. If you have two mapped drives G: and H:
they both point to \\fileserver\share1\folder
If you render to H: it will fail, if you render to G: it works! Same path, same user, same permissions.
The only difference is H comes after G, so it fails... BUG. If it was to do with anything else, underscores, permissions etc, it would fail on both.

Samba mounting windows share

Hi, I'm trying to mount a windows share but all I can do after mounting is seeing the folders and files on the share. I can not read any file, I get "permission denied". On windows everything should be set to allow for the files to be read (if my brother didn't forget, overlooked anything). I even disabled the windows firewall.
The windows 2000 computer can access the arch linux samba shares without a problem.
I'm running arch current up to date.
Here's how I mount, as root:
mount -t smbfs -o username=gast,password=gast //192.168.0.132/Muziek /mnt/LW/Muziek/
(gets mounted succesfully, but I can't read the files)

You are right. I did not need the dir_mode and file_mode, and I did have full control enable, but no dice.
However it seems there is a folder aliasing feature, that was introduced in windows vista (though I don't recall the windows name for the feature and I am running win7), I believe to be the problem. For example, if I share and mount C:\Users I have access to C:\Users\myuser and can create folders and documents there. However the predefined folders Music, Documents, Pictures I have no write permission inside of.
Next if I share and mount C:\Users\myuser I have the same result for those folders however now I can see additional folders one is 'My Documents' in this folder I have write access and changes are mapped back to the Documents Folder. Additionally there are now showing in the Documents folder, I had no write access to, additional folders which also weren't showing before 'My Music', 'My Pictures', and 'My Videos' in which I now have write access and they map back as well.
When I connected to the shares from an XP machine I could simply access the original folders.

Accessing Windows share in ARD

Hi Everyone,
I have ARD 3.2 installed on my macbook and all of my packages are in one of the apple share which is located on our tiger server.
so whenever I need to install a package on any machine then I will just mount that apple share (located on server)and using ARD point to very specific package and install and it works without any problem.
Other day we have relocated our apple packages to one of the windows share (w2k8) and now I can mount that share and read all the packages without any problem but whenever I use ARD and point to new share, I am unable to see anything in that share.
I am not sure if there is compatibility issue between Leopard OS X and Windows Sever 2008?
Any ideas?

When you say you're allowing "IP" through, does this mean you're allowing all TCP and all UDP ports thru? This should be enough to allow a windows drive mapping to occur. TCP42 must be open for WINS registration. Also beware that there's a command that logically puts your VPN tunnel inside, or outside the access-list. In other words, do you trust the traffic in your VPN enough to not require it to pass thru any access lists on the PIX? If you've got TCP and UDP wide open, and still not able to map, using \\10.10.10.10\sharename, check to see if the VPN traffic is / is not moving thru an access list.
