ZCM Slow Login - Resolved

None of the stuff I found online fixed our issue where ZCM agents were causing the logins to hang 5-10 mins. We had the registry key set for async and it was still bad. We finally simply restarted the ZCM services on the servers and then everything fixed itself and logins were back to normal, well under a minute. In our case they had to reboot the sql database in the middle of the night and I am guessing the the connectors from our zcm servers to the db were messed up.
Try it,
zenworks911
zcm 10.3.3
AD domain
edir ldap connector
sql db
Novell client too.

  • Windows XP slow login when plugged into external network

    Hi,
A about 9 months ago XP SP3 was rolled out with an image upgrade, since then there has been rumblings of slow logins when connected to an external network (eg a ADSL modem at home) but no evidence etc.
    About the environment
    Windows XP SP3
    Novell Client 4.91 SP5 IR1
    ZENworks 7
Roaming profiles with folder redirection for Desktop, My Documents.
We have just rolled out another upgrade to a number of base apps and this has come up again but with some evidence and some time for me to investigate.
What I have discovered is this:
When a laptop is plugged into an external network (I have used an ADSL network here at work to test this) the login for a user takes about 2 minutes with SP2 and about 3.5 minutes with SP3. This is done checking the workstation only box.
    This happens consistently on workstations.
What I have done to narrow this down is as follows:
Removed ZENworks 7 agent. Login times improved dramatically
Installed older versions of ZENworks agent, all results the same, extra slow logins experienced with all versions tried.
Installed ZEN agent and removed Novell Client, still the same slow login.
Created a local user, fast logins experienced even with the ZEN agent installed.
Disabled all ZEN services and logged in with an eDir account, slow logins all the same.
Removed all policies from user and workstations, this made a slight difference but nothing much
    Disabled ZEN, no difference either
    Disabled NMAS, no difference either
Removed some IDM installer we had rolled at the same time, no difference.
    Here are the timed results.
XP with SP2 on corporate network = 30 secs
XP with SP3 on corporate network = 35 secs
XP with SP2 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 2min
XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem plugged in = 3min 26 secs
XP with SP3 WS only ticked and ADSL modem NOT plugged in = 45 secs
XP with SP3 local user with ADSL modem = 45 secs
So it's down to the ZEN agent really, but the update to SP3 hasn't helped either.
I enabled debug logging and got the following from the log, usernames and servers have been removed:

    OK, I'm out of Ideas.
I was hoping for something much bigger :>
You may want to post in the MS Forums in regards to the Timeout in that
    part.
I would not mention ZCM or Client32 as that will just cause pushback.
In short, there appears to be a long timeout for the redirected profile
that extends beyond just client timeout settings.
You may want to post the the Client32 Forum to see if they have anymore
    timeout tweaks.
You may be able to use the "Bad Name Cache" to pre-popate that server so
you can gain the 10 seconds w/o needing to disable the workstation service.
Perhaps the "Give Up on Requests to SAs", but I've never messed with
that before. Wait before giving up on DA may help too.
    Just guessing now.

  • Slow logins with Kerberos?

I've noticed that logins have been quite slow: specifically, there seems to be a delay of several minutes between typing in the user name and password in the login window before the login is successful and the desktop begins to initialise. This appears to be the case even if I wait several minutes after the login dialog is displayed, allowing launchd to start up further daemons in the background. I'm using Kerberised logins on Leopard Server 10.5.8, and I should add that this delay seems a recent change in behaviour, although I can't tie it to any specific patch. What catches my eye from the logs is the following entries from secure.log:
Dec 1 18:29:15 <hostname> loginwindow[80]: Login Window Started Security Agent
    Dec 1 18:29:16 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: Showing Login Window
    Dec 1 18:29:49 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: User info context values set for <user>
    Dec 1 18:32:49 <hostname> /System/Library/CoreServices/CCacheServer.app/Contents/MacOS/CCacheServer[299]: Starting up.
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> SecurityAgent[172]: Login Window done
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> com.apple.SecurityServer[36]: Succeeded authorizing right system.login.console by client /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app for authorization created by /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app.
    Dec 1 18:32:50 <hostname> loginwindow[80]: Login Window - Returned from Security Agent
As best as I can read this, there's a three minute delay in login because the credential caching service isn't standing by to manage the tickets generated by the Kerberised login and isn't made available promptly. I don't know if this is itself the crux of the problem or indicative that some other operation is having problems and takes this long to look up the credential cache service's Mach port and get launchd to start it up or to acquire credentials to populate into the cache. I should add that all name services and the Kerberos instance from which credentials are acquired are local to the server, which may or may not be part of the problem.
Bottom line is that taking three minutes to process a login request makes for a very frustrating experience (let's not mention the subsequent delays in getting all the programs launched by the dock to page in and complete their start-up and how difficult it is to get anything in the desktop session to respond while the system chugs along).

    Hi
No. It probably means you've posted in the wrong forum. Your question really relates to an OD Master environment and OSX Server. In which case the forum you really want is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=236
Slow login's could be down to a number of things. If the problem is affecting all clients then I would look at the 'health' of your DNS/DHCP Services first. Can clients resolve the server correctly on both pointers? Can the Server resolve itself the same way? Is Kerberos still running on the Server? Kerberos as you know is time-dependent, in which case are the Client's clocks in sync with the Server's? Is there enough space on the drive hosting home profiles? If the drive is not the Boot OS is there enough space on the boot OS? Have you tried flushing Client Workstation's caches yet?
As you can see only more questions rather than answers I'm afraid. We could continue on this forum if you wish but I feel it would probably be best if you posted in the other forum. More chance of it being seen by guys who do this sort of thing every day.

  • Slow login time from GDM to Gnome

    Hello everyone,
for a long time now I have been experiencing very slow login procedures. It takes about 40 to 60 seconds after I entered my password to get to Gnome shell (almost feels like Windows).
There have been discussions about similar problems (e.g https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=98901) and I have read a lot of them, but never found a solution.
Isn't there some kind of log file where I can see what's taking so long?
    any help would be appreciated!

  • Slow Logins

    Hi guys,
I'm running an Intel XServe running 10.5.2 Server as an OpenDirectory Master. The login times are extremely slow and after about 5 - 10 people login no one else can login. I looked through some of the logs and I found some strange errors in the LDAP log that I'm wondering about:
    Apr 25 16:14:20 xserve slapd[75]: <= bdbsubstringcandidates: (authAuthority) index_param failed (18)
    Apr 25 16:14:50: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
This error is repeated hundreds of times.
    Thanks in advance,
    Graham

    Hi Graham
I too have experienced incredibly slow logins with 10.5.2 on a brand new Xserve. I have also experienced intermittent issues since a failed attempt to de-couple a directory crashed the entire system. I have run all the usual software maintenance on the machine, and have repaired the attached RAID a number of times. I haven't looked into this much yet since the machine seems to be working okay once logged in and there are only so many hours in a day.
I'll try and check the logs on Monday, see if I am seeing the same thing but I don't know how long I will be in the office. I'll get back to you when I can.

We had 10.3.1 running on servers and workstations with little problem, after upgrade to 10.3.4 we now have over all slow login around 5min then the app launcher will take another 10-30 min to display contents. if you try to zac ref we are getting multiple errors on workstations. the most common is "Unable to refresh the system settings"

Start with a ZDC report on all of your Servers.
The ZDC Tool can be found on Patchfinder with the other patches.
This can help identify issues such as missing or incorrect files.

  • Slow login and grey wallpaper?

    All,
I have a 4 day old Macbook Pro Retina base config. I haven't had the need to reboot my machine since i first turned it on and maybe updating to the latest update. Last night I decided to shut down rather than put it to sleep.
Today (fourth day) I turned it on, booted up fine, and when I logged in, I noticed it took like 5-7 seconds before it went to my desktop, at one point I thought it froze.
Later on, i was messing with time machine, my external hd, itunes, caffeine, and the menu bar turned black, so I though to reboot the machine.
After the reboot, I logged in, and notice the slow login again, and this time, the wallpaper i set up was gone and was replaced with a grey wallpaper.
I searched a bit and notice a few people have had issues like this with Lion.
Was wondering if there is a solution to this?
    Thanks!

Delays and related can be caused by DNS errors, and by network errors.
OS X Server is dependent on correctly-configured DNS services.
To verify DNS, launch Terminal.app from the Applications > Utilities folder on the server, and issue the following diagnostic command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
That command won't make any changes, but will report whether your host name and your DNS are correct on your server.  You'll get some output and a message that no changes are required, or some output and a message indicating something about whatever error was detected.

  • Slow login - one guy's solution

I was experiencing very slow login times several months after buying my iMac. I wanted my quick startup/login ready-to-go desktop. I tried zapping PRAM. Repaired permissions and disks. Emptied caches. Ran 3rd party utils. Archived and Installed Leopard again. Nothing.
So I went through the system prefs and tried isolating different things and found that Bluetooth Sharing was the culprit. After disabling it (and disabling Bluetooth altogether as I'm not using any bluetooth devices with the computer) I had my speedy iMac back.
So I thought I'd post it here just in case someone else may have the same problem. Better to try this before re-installing the whole system.

Yes, on my Mac Pro I had issues with bluetooth. But this was the machine starting from sleep (or not going to sleep properly: fan running, but no response to keyboard). It turned out the bluetooth was "on".
Also, I have stopped my bluetooth keyboard/mouse as the start-up of the Mac can be a problem when I need a keyboard key to e.g. start from DVD etc. So, now, I only use bluetooth very very successfully (i might add) for sharing my macbook with my mac pro.

  • Slow Boot Up, Slow Login caused by AHCI so we used IDE Emulator. What is the ramification of that?

    Hi,
We have Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise and x64 machines and we have slow boot up and slow login issue for a while.  We thought it was clearly group policy causing it but it can be misleading because we have other machines that use the same
GPO but has no issue.  On the other hand, the problem is prominent with a specific HP Model (Elitedesk 800G1 SFF) so when we focused on that model, we reinstalled/reformat the computer but to no avail, the machine would still be be slow as soon as it
joins the domain.  The other option is to minize the services and startup items, but we can prove that other machines boot up fine with all the services and startup items running.  So "Msconfig" helps but as much as possible, we don't want
to do this because we have several computers with slow issues.  We also installed  KB2775511 but we don't get consistent result.
What gave us consistent result was changing the BIOS setting from AHCI to IDE but I would like to know what are the ramification of not using AHCI.  Our new machines were delivered with this BIOS setting so we suppose that this is the most appropriate
setting however, it screws up other things.
What are we missing, how different is the performance and is this change not recommended?  Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I just add another method to diagnose your problem. You can try to use xbootmgr to collect a boot trace of your system.
Refer to the link below for more details about the trace steps:

  • Super slow login on only one LAN client

    Hello,
I have a small LAN in my office. I have a gigabit router which connects to the rest of the world. Inside the router I have an imac with SL server, a 6 TB NAS, and 3 imac clients. All the devices pull their ip addresses from the router (i.e., 192.168.0.xxx).
The SL sever is 192.168.0.100 and has dns name prg-main.prg.local. I am convinced DNS is properly working on all of the machines. I checked it by opening terminal and typing "host prg-main.prg.local" and "host 192.168.0.100". The correct response is provided by host, i.e., the ip and domain name are mapping onto each other.
On imac one everything is perfect. All users can login no problem.
On imac two everything is not perfect. User logins are extremely slow (3-5 minutes). Once the slow login period is over things more or less work OK.
On the imacserver everything is not pefect. I can login as a local administrator adn administer the server, but if I try to locally login as a user from the OD server it also has the extremely slow login.
All users in my group can login fast on imac one and slow on imac two, so this is not user specific.
imact one and imac two have identical settings in the Network and Accounts panels of system configuration. Both have a green light next to the bound server under "login options" of accounts. Both have all recent system updates.
I am at my wits end - does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this? It just started about a week ago and has no apparent connection to anything I've done.

    Hi,
Have a look in the system.log file for a IOkit timeout.
I had a problem with my Imac from purchase, it turned out to be a problem with the firewire port.
If there is a IOkit Timeout during boot-up, check to see if your system profile can seethe firewire port okay(no warnings).
If there is a problem with firewire, you can disabling it by moving all the IOFire*.kext file out of the
    system/library/extentions folder.
    Hope this helps,
    Steve

  • Slow logins to domain, several event ID errors (group policy, netlogon, NTP errors)

We have a laptop user who was experiencing slow logons in a remote office.   (Remote office has 100 users, only 1 is reporting the issue).  Helpdesk swapped computers to give the user brand new hardware.   The new laptop worked
fine while in the IT department in the main office, the user returned to their desk in their remote office after replacing the laptop and logged in and experienced the same slow logon issues as the older laptop.
Logons take up to 45 mins to process.  (Login script hangs and does not process).  During the process, you can check IPConfig and it received the proper DNS settings.  you can ping the authenticating server by name.  We have scanning
on our local copiers setup to scan to the users desktop, and this errors out.  DNS on the AD controller shows the proper IP address for the machine and you can ping the machine by name.
System Event log is loaded with errors:
Event ID 5719 - Netlogon, computer not able to setup a secure session with a domain controller in the domain
Event ID 1129 - Group Policy, processing of Group Policy failed because of lack of network connectivity
Event ID 129 - Time Service, NTP Client was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source
Event ID 5783 - NetLogon, The session setup to the WIndows NT or 2000 domain controller (xxx) for the domain is not responsive.  RPC call cancelled.   (NOTE - you can ping this domain controller by name and by IP with no issues)
Event ID 130 - Time-Service, NTP client unable to set a domain peer
All these seem to point to RPC errors timing out because they cannot communicate to the network resources.  The problem happens on wired or wireless connections.  We had the user move to a different network connection (one we know is working for
another user) the problem persists.   The problem was on the original computer and continues to happen even after replacing the hardware with a brand new laptop.
I have tried running the following hotfix.  Which does not resolve the issue:
http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2459530 which technically this shouldn't be an issue because we use DHCP off the 2003 AD domain controller.
I have checked the domain controller, AD Replication is processing with no issues.  DNS is working.  The local DHCP server has no issues or events related to this account and neither does the local DNS server or the authenticating server (which
    is in another remote office).

    Hi,
As we know, most of the time error event 5719 is caused by network connectivity issues or name resolution issue, I suggest you refer to this link to make a further analysis

  • Slow login!

hello everyone. my friend is having trouble with some macbooks in her class at school. they're trying to finish a magazine by a certain due date, but when they try to login to their accounts on the computer it takes a very long long time to login (their class is only 45 mins long, so they need all the time they can get). she says "it took 20 minutes to log in yesterday and today it won't log in at all" when she logs in it just shows the desktop background and nothing else.
any help would be much appreciated! i might have to take my own macbook down there and help them out!!

    Cephei,
Last time I had that problem I discovered that I had some duplicate fonts in my system.
Have your friend open the application "Fontbook."
She should see a rather lengthy list of fonts on her system. If any of those fonts have a 'bullet' by them, they are duplicate.
Click on any fonts that are 'bulleted' to highlight them, and then click on the Edit menu, and "Resolve Duplicates".
Do this for each duplicate font until they are all taken care of.
Have her log off (or just shut down) and then log back on. Hopefully the logon process will have sped up a lot!
If the log on process is still slow have her delete the com.apple.FontBook.plist file. It will be located in the Users/heraccountname/Preferences/ folder. This file will be recreated at the next restart. Have her check the Fontbook again for duplicate fonts if she had to go through this last step.
If this isn't her personal Macbook, she may want to talk to her system administrator before she starts removing files.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac Mini slow login

I wonder if anyone can help with this.
My Mac Mini, with a 256GB Samsung SSD installed just after purchase, has been very quick for the last 7 months. Suddenly the boot time has become painfully slow with a long delay until I can log in. After login all runs fine as far as I can tell. Here's what happens:
Power on - grey screen and spinning progress bar (this used to take 15-20 seconds but is now longer)
Login window appears but all buttons are unresponsive. Mouse cursor moves on screen but nothing clicks. Neither can one use keyboard shortcuts.
After a long wait the login buttons suddenly become active and I can enter password and proceed.
I have tried FSCK, permissions check, Disk repair and eventually reinstalled the OS, just in case, but the symptoms persist.
I suspect there is some background process that is holding up the startup process but I am unsure what it could be. Perhaps someone with a more expert eye could have a look at the console data below and see if they can spot what seems to be causing the lag. Seems to me not a lot happens between 16:19 and 16:26 when it all gets rolling again...
    Thanks for any help

Thanks Linc - I've uninstalled Sophos. Neither Sophos or SIMBL activity kicks in until after login though so my instinct is that the problem is more fundamental.
There is a much edited part of the latest console data below which covers the lag between appearance of login screen and the time it actually becomes active - 09:43 - 09:52. Can you see anything in there that might iondicate why it is hanging for 8 minutes? This is after a fairly long period of spinning progrees disk and Apple.
I've also noticed that Shutdown now seems quite extended too.

Installed Novell client 2 sp3 ir4 on a fresh 2012R2 with Xendesktop 7.1. Changed option in novell client : logon enable= off , Login with Non-Novell Credential Provider = on. So now citrix Xendesktop user can log and have their OES Mapped drive. On the server itself(non Remote Desktop) everything is fast, but when i log from Remote desktop, it take about 1 minutes more time.

  • Very slow login

I am running a late-2008 MBP 15" running 10.5.6. Lately, it's been taking a very long time after I enter my login password for the computer to start up. This happens from a cold start as well as when I wake my machine back up and am prompted for the login password.
The only two things that I've done to the machine recently are:
    • I installed the Safari 4 beta
    • I ran Directory Assistant to configure the machine to access our Leopard server
I've since uninstalled the Safari 4 beta due to some issues it was causing in Mail.
When I login to a different account, the login goes much faster. So, it's something specific to one user account.
I've also noticed an overall sluggishness in Safari ever since I uninstalled Safari 4 beta. I can live with the sluggishness, but the login delay is an issue. It can often take two minutes after entering the password. Any suggestions on things I could try to resolve this?
    Thanks, Greg

You might try installing and running Applejack. It runs in single user mode and fixes a myriad of problems. After installing boot up in single user mode hold down the command (apple) and s key after the chime. Type in applejack AUTO restart. Hit return and let it do its thing. It sometimes takes a few startups to get the full effect.
