Zen 4gb w/vista issu

I'm having some issues getting my new Zen 4gb player to operate correctly using Vista Home Premium 32bit...
Installed the software, plugged in the device, got the standard "ding" sound as usual when you connect a usb device, except that nothing pops up at first, nor does the software recognize it. After checking my device manager, i noticed the player was recognized, but i had to enable it to work. Now i can see the device in my computer, and the Zen organizer software is semi-recognizing it, meaning it sees the device and will let my 'browse' it and transfer files manually, as in dragging and dropping files directly into their respecti've folders, but when i go to 'add media' or other features like 'convert video' it says the player is 'busy or not connected'
the auto-update and sync features are also not working because they are not recognizing the player.
I have tried the player on two XP machines and there have been no issues
so is this a Vista only problem? bad drivers?
anything I can enable or disable for full support?
Thanks
Daniel

Suggest you go to the Support page and click Windows Vista. This will take you to the Vista Support page. HTH

  • Can the Zen 4gb work on Macbook running Bootcamp Windows Vist

With the falling Macbook prices from Apple, I am considering getting one within the next few month. I know that officially the Creative Zen 4gb would not work nati'vely on the Macbook however I am planning to install Windows Vista via Bootcamp and was wondering if I would face any problem syncing the Zen 4gb under Windows Vista on the Macbook hardware ?
    Thanks.

I had a similar problem trying to install Win7 x64 on my 2009 iMac. I finally copied the entire Boot Camp driver folder from the OS X installation DVD to Windows. Then I went to \drivers\bootcamp64.msi, right-clicked on it and selected Troubleshoot Compatibility. Windows chugged a bit and came up with a dialog that said Try Recommended Settings. Click on that, then Start Program. The Boot Camp installer now worked great.
    Give it a shot.

  • Suggestion for renaming new Zen 4GB/8GB/1

Just bought myself a new "Zen 4GB". I think Creative should rename it to "Zen Paperclip". Seem i
need to reboot it several times (7 times in 2 days). Talk about product quality issues. What
    a waste of $30.
No mention on the box either that it doesn't support UMS - how many media players out there don't
act as a mass storage devices these days. Even my old 3rd gen ipod can be mounted on my Linux box
as a disk and i can copy files onto it and play. Maybe even "Zen Microsoft" as a name ?
My wife's calling it the "Zen paperweight" - it's too light for even that job...
Off to the Apple store.. The new iTouch looks nice. Well it doesn't have a SD slot, but that doesn't
work too well according to this list, and no radio, but i can browse the web, and have a lot more apps
    soon, maybe even internet radio.
    Bad Creative, bad..

I was not comparing a 4GB model with a 8GB iTouch which is their base model iTouch. So there's only $00 in it if you compared 8gb with 8gb. Plus you are looking at much better features and stability on the apple (or so my friend tells me). Half the so called features on the Zen don't work very well, and i'm not the only one. Look at this very forum.
    >Who told you that you can't use the ZEN as an USB Storage Device? Mine works fine this way.
I told you. I have one, and it doesn't support UMS. You cannot plug it into a Mac or Linux and see the device. You are limited to MTP support only ! If you give your player to someone else who doesn't have the MTP driver installed in windows it will NOT work as a plain storage device. Try it before you respond.
And no i don't disconnect it while it's docked when it decides to crash/hang. Even if i did i'd consider it a bug in the firmware nevertheless.Message Edited by terraforma on 0-4-20072:46 PM

  • Zen 4gb white scr

I have loaded newest firmware but still get white screen on startup. It did boot properly time but after i turned it off then on again I got the white screen. Whats going on? Is there a fix for this or is it an RMA issue?

I have a problem which was quite the same. Yesterday I upgraded my player Zen 4Gb and transferred some files on it. After that I tried to read them, but I selected the music menu, the screen became black and I can't do anything with it. I decided to reset it and now, it's off but doesn't want to turn on or somewhat else. I tried to re upgrade firmware or use recovery tool but my player is not recognized by my computer.
    i'm out of ideas
(excuse me if I make mistakes but I'm french )

  • ZEN 4GB does not power on unless plugged with lapt

    I bought a new creative zen(4GB) a week back.
I charged it fully for 5 hrs and then tested it by playing a few songs and videos.
I switched it off and tried to power it on after around 5 hrs but it did not respond.
When i connected it to the laptop again...it got powered on. After that i removed it from laptop and again played a couple of songs.
If i power it on after short intervals...it works...but if i power it on after 2-4 hrs it does not power on unless docked to the laptop and this is a recurring feature.
Please, respond in case someone has faced such a thing or could give some idea.
    Thanks.

I would use recovery mode, do a format of the player and then upgrade the firmware if you have not already upgraded. The format eliminates any possibly corruption (which can cause shut down and battery performance issues) and it also resets the player settings... the later firmware versions definitely have better battery and charging performance in my experience (current for the ZEN 2/4/8/6/32 is .20.02)
If it still happens after that then it may be a defect. It does happen - and support can help you get a warranty replacement in that situation. Even though it seems like the forums are always flooded with problems you have to keep in mind the massi've number that don't have any issues and never have any reason to visit here (so in other words keep the chin up, if you do have to get a replacement don't panic).

  • Zen 4gb battery draining fast even when the unit is off

    Hi,
I have the zen 4gb. I also have the newest firmware loaded onto it. The battery goes down fast even when off. I also notice that if I go and turn it back on after 24 hours it appears to be still in standby mode. Any ideas? Thank you.

I remember the Zen Micro power issue (bought one for my son). That one was where the player stayed in "standby" when you powered off for many hours. This enabled a much quicker start up, but also resulted in some battery drain while "off". They changed this from 24 hours standby to 4 hours, I think. My Zen Touch did the same thing, but had a big battery so the drain was not so bad. It started almost instantly from standby, vs. maybe 20 seconds from true "off". The Zen (I have a Zen 4GB) seems to have a similar feature. I am not sure how long it stays in standby mode before shutting down completely.

  • Zen 4GB player freezing/screen going black

I have a Zen 4GB, and recently it's been freezing up a lot; the screen goes black, or sometimes white, or sometimes streaks the background colors, like vertical blinds, and I have to reset it. It usually happens when I press any button, but sometimes just when it's jostled.
I already tried upgrading/reloading the firmware, and then I tried formatting the whole thing, and neither of those have helped. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Could it be a hardware problem? Thanks.

    Hi Panthea,
It does sounds like some kind of hardware issue, I would suggest getting in touch with support.

  • ZEN 4GB forgets res

One of the main reasons I upgraded from an incredibly cheap SDCard reader/MP3 player was because it didn't have Resume, so if you stopped half way through a 60 minute podcast it threw you back to the beginning.
My ZEN 4GB remembers the track and the position in the track after a power-off, but only for an hour or so. Any longer, and it resets to the start of the track. Fine if all you listen to is 3-minute pop songs, but DEFINITELY NOT for a substantial podcast. If I listen to the first half on the morning commute, I want to carry on from the same place on the way home at night. Is this yet another case of software thinking it knows better than I do, and getting it wrong?
    Regards - Philip

This is a known issue; dri'ves me crazy too.
When you turn off a Zen, it goes into a "sleep" state --- not entirely off, but not on. When you turn it back on, it takes just a second or two and shows only the "ZEN" logo. After -2 hours, the player will turn itself completely off. (The player will actually flash briefly when it does this.) After this, when you turn it on, it takes about 7 seconds and shows the "Creative" logo, then "ZEN", then on.
If your player is turned off completely, it loses the resume spot. There seems to be no way around this, except using the bookmarks feature (which doesn't work on the SD card).
I know that early firmwares worked different with respect to sleep mode, but I don't know if the resume functioned properly. If it did, you could roll back to an earlier firmware.
Hopefully this will be addressed in a future firmware update.

  • Zen 4GB locked up, how long to discharge batte

My mp3 player locked up. I have had it just over a month, and I'd not had any other problems to this point. Now, it refuses to reset or turn on. It will not respond in anyway. I contacted tech support about this issue and they suggested I wait until the battery discharges completely and then try to reset the player again. I replied to them and asked how long that would take. I cannot seem to get an answer, so I will ask you: About how long will it take a zen 4gb player's battery to discharge from fully charged while in this locked and, apparently off, state?
And, further, can you speak to the likelihood of this fixing my problem? Would I be better off to send the player away for repair rather than waiting
    thank you for your assistance.

Too many variables to say exactly how long it takes to discharge the battery since the LCD is not on (?) and the player is not playing music. Since the "up to" 30 hours applies to actually operating the device you might need to wait several days. If you can reset the device via "recovery mode" then it is possible unlock the Zen. Make sure you don't wait too long before your warranty runs out.

  • Zen 4GB USB Disconnection Prob

Hi all, Any help you guys could provide would be very much appreciated, because I'm at a complete loss here. Basically, I just purchased a Zen 6GB as an upgrade from my Zen 4GB; I gave the 4GB to my wife for her to use. I've never had a single problem with the 4GB until I installed it on my wife's computer, but they're abundant now. (Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHZ running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit) Her computer consistently disconnects and reconnects the player whenever it's plugged in. It does this whether I'm trying to access the internal memory or her 8GB SDHC card through the player. If we're using the Zen Media Explorer, it will kick us out of it completely. Once it reconnects, we can restart the Media Explorer and start using it again. It varies how often it does this, but it usually happens every couple of minutes, making transferring large chunks of data to the player impossible. It has the latest firmware installed, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the player's device drivers on her computer. I have also uninstalled the chipset drivers for her motherboard (Gigabyte Intel P35 motherboard) and reinstalled them with the newest drivers from Intel. Here's where it gets weird though. My new 6GB Zen does not have the same problem on her computer. I plug it in either to access the Zen's internal memory or to access my 8GB SD card, and it works without a hitch. It hasn't done what the 4GB player has been doing once. In turn, her 4GB player works perfect on my computer and our laptop. It's hooked up to my computer as we speak and has not disconnected in over an hour. Just to give you more background in what I've done to try and fix this... I've cleaned up the Zen through its recovery mode. I've hard reset it several times... I've reloaded the newest firmware. I've reinstalled all drivers multiple times on her computer as I've mentioned above. Nothing has helped, and it makes it impossible to use the player on her computer. Please help, this is incredibly frustrating!

Hear, hear: "Creative, can we get a firmware update please?"
I have a Zen 2Gb which has the same problem because I'm using Vista Home Premium. I tested my Zen player and Media Explorer on someone else's Vista Basic environment, and there was no problem.
The only work-around I've come up with for myself is to turn off AutoPlay in Vista for my Zen player. Then when it's connected, I manually open Media Explorer. I still get continual "bleeps" that something new's just connected to my computer, but I don't have to deal with 50 CMP windows opening one after the other! There's still the problem where CMP goes into disconnect mode for an instant as the new pseudo-connection takes place. I hadn't realized that this behaviour stops after an hour - thanks for that. I'll give it a go.
It's been suggested to me that I use WMP instead or even iTunes, but they don't have the editing features that Creative Media Explorer has (kudos for that anyhow). I use my player for podcasts (I also love the bookmarking feature),? as well as music, and when I've downloaded a few of them I drag them to my "Podcast" playlist on the player via Media Explorer. The alternati've is just to drag them to the player, if I don't use CME, and then I have to shuffle them around which is a nuisance once you start manipulating things on the player.

  • I can't eject ("files in use by another application") Windows/Vista Issue?

OK... so in the grand scheme of things, this really is NOT the end of the world... but it sure is super-annoying!! This is my first every Apple product (took a while to get on the bandwagon) and I was hoping for more stability and ease of use... I've called AppleCare several times and they can't help me figure this out... according to them it's a Windows/Vista issue (which DOES seem likely). I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Dell Dimension E521.
Here's how it goes... I plug my iPod in, which opens up iTunes and it syncs fine. I wait until the top of iTunes says "sync complete" and the face of the iPod simply says "Connected". Then I click on the "eject" button next to the iPod listing in iTunes. It pauses for a moment, then I look down and the iPod suddenly has those syncing, circular arrows, moving again and it says "Synchronizing- do not disconnect". And then a few moments later, iTunes gives me a pop-up that says " XXXX ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application"
So obviously, something else is connecting to the iPod and preventing me from ejecting it using iTunes, but I have not been able to figure out what it is!
Since it's something on my machine, I have tried the following:
    - shut down AntiVirus (TrendMicro Internet Security 2008)
    - turned off Windows Firewall
    - went through all the programs running in the task bar and turned them off
    - opened up Task Manager and turned EVERYTHING else I could see off
None of the above have made any difference. The workaround that Apple gave me was to go into Computer and then right click on the listed drive and select "Safely Remove" which usually works (the times it doesn't work, it gives a similar message saying the device was being used by another application and can't be removed, try again later). But 90% of the time it works.
I use that or the Eject option when I right click on that drive (not sure the difference, they seem to do the same thing). The workaround works, but I'd sure LOVE to get iTunes to be able to eject my iPod!!
Here's what I've done regarding this iPod and iTunes:
    - reset the iPod
    - restored the iPod
    - uninstalled and re-installed iTunes
    - selected and unselected the various things I'm syncing (currently: Music, TV Shows, Podcasts, Photos) to see if it was one of them causing the issue
NONE of the above has made any difference (and I've done each about 2-3 times, ZERO exaggeration).
I've called into AppleCare about half a dozen times now, hoping to get that one brilliant tech that knows more than the others... but no luck yet... so I thought I'd try this forum to see if one of the brilliant posters here can help me sort this out.
PLEASE- ANY help you can provide (or even just point me in the "right" direction of how to determine this) would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Thanks so much in advance,
    SC

I am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

  • Creative ZEN 4gb compatible with Creative MediaSource

    Hi,
I was just wondering if I can use my new Creative Zen 4gb with Creative MediaSource. I really like MediaSource and I would prefer to use it the only problems is when ever I connect it its keep locking up and crashing especially when I go to creative playlists. I used to use mediasource for my Zen Micro. Any suggestion? or does creative no longer support MediaSource with there new players? Thanks!

Strife04 asked the following:"Hi, does anyone know which Creative MediaSource Player/ Organizer is compatible with the new 4gb ZEN and if there is one, where it can be downloaded? thanks in advance.":?My reply:Which 4gb Zen?I have the Zen V Plus 4 gig and MediaSource Player/Orginizer running on a?Windows XP SP2enabled Dell.
    This works fine for me.

  • Creative Zen 4GB bad memory sector

"Creative Zen 4GB bad memory sectork After a few months benI'venoticing that trying to load more media into my Zen gives errors like "Not enough space on disk" or "An unknown erroroccurred". This happened when I load files, it gets to around the 2.GB mark, and then files don'ttransferto it. I've tried formatting via the Zen onboard formatter, formatting it though the computer, uploading files though the onboard SD importer and though the computer. Ibelievethat a sector of my flash memory has died. I want to try and do a zero-out of the data, much like on a regular hard dri've, in witch this feels like the only option. But I don't know a way because of the fun limitations of<span class="Apple-style-span">MTP. And I'vebengoogling for months on how to fix this, but nothingusefulhas been dug up. Is there a way to fix the broken sector I have Macs, most WindowsMachinesand Linuxmachines, so I have no platform limitations. I would like for it to be as easy as a full formatinsteadof the quick-formats it seems to perform every time I try a conventional format.
    Thanks, Zack

If all else failed (format and clean up), you may need to call tech support and send in the device for repair. The cost however is quite expensi've for out of warranty repair/replacement. :smileyindifferent:

  • Creative zen 4gb won't turn on manually and acting stra

My Creative zen 4gb can only be turned on when I connect it first to the computer, and after that, I can turn it on without the use of a computer. But if I don't use for a few hours, it won't turn on again, and I have to connect it to the computer again ( I can turn it on again, if I had just turned it off though). I've only had this player for a month or two only. I haven't done a format though... Thanks.

hello, sorry, i dont think i made myself clear. I meant by pulling on the on button for a split second will either make my device flash a blank white screen, or the side of device will display blue( like it will if the device was on) ?and the sound will fuzz for a sec, but neither of these will result in the device starting up. i just want the wonder if that is normal and will that damage the device.
    ps.
i already know The correct way to start up my device is to pull down on the button for 2+ secs.
