  • Zen Style M300 - good and bad I'm afraid!

Neat, easy to operate, clear (though small) screen.
I can li've with it as it works OK for the price - BUT it really needs firmware updates and co-operation with OSs and Apps:
. Has anybody at Creative heard of Linux? If you Google 'Linux' you'll find that there are many millions of us who use it now. If you are confused by the number of distributions you could do worse than ensuring that your products function well with Ubuntu. Please contribute to the Linux community by providing info to allow your players to be recognised by Rhythmbox, Banshee etc (as older ipods are). In the meantime give clear instructions as to how to operate the M300 with say Ubuntu / Banshee. Files that are hidden in Windows appear in Linux - you should have stored all config files in a Config folder - not the root. At least your device appears as two USB attached storage devices so I can add files in Linux easily.
    2. You MUST implement bookmarking (both in Music and on SDCard. If I listen to a podcast or audiobook I need to come back to the same place - after listening to other stuff. The device does not even remember where you are on the SDCard if you pause before shutdown. This then needs new menus 'Bookmarks' in Music and SDCard.
    3. Playlists are a shambles - why insist on Unicode / Winamp? The Unicode step stops synching and complicates updating playlists horribly. There is no Winamp for Linux - and you don't publish exactly how you want the playlist format to be as far as I can see. Why not implement a Now Playing queue so you can select a number of files that will get queued for playing? Then you could add a menu item the the Now Playing menu to Save As a playlist (OK you would have to name it something - maybe just 'Playlist date time'). You can't make playlists for the SDCard files.
    4. Your user guide is very poor - loads of pages with just a few lines on each. It doesn't even say clearly how to arrange files and folders in Music:
I found out by trial & error that the player isn't fussy - it just sees all files in Music - however for sanity it is best to arrange with folders Artist - Album - Files. The SDCard listings just see filenames not ID3 track names - really bad for podcasts that often have horrible long filenames.
    5. On the subject of ID3 - would it do any harm to mention that the player only understands ID3v2.3? It took me a huge search on the web to find out why your player did not read the mp3 data - and lists as Unknown Artist, Unknown Album - that was in ID3v2.4. In Linux I can easily change the tags to v2.3 - but it is annoying to have to do so.
(to engineers at Creative: ID3v2.4 was created in the year 2000 - do keep up!)
    6. The SDCard MUST integrate into main memory - it is so clunky not having the same facilities for it as in the Music folder. This must be so that you can charge more for M300s with more basic memory!
    To sum up:
When you create web pages you test them thoroughly with different browsers - and when you create devices like the M300 you must test them and make sure that non-technical users can operate them easily in Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux Ubuntu, Mac OS: in each case with a good free app available for the synching. Nowadays we use devices with a whole range of systems at home and at work.
I wish you'd sent me a pre-production model to give you this feedback a few months ago!
If I sound irritated - I am - mainly because its a lovely little player with some hugely irritating characteristics.
OK - top firmware update requset: bookmarks!

    Hi,
    Thank you for the feedback.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra has no power, no

I was uploading new software for a Zen extra, and got the wrong firmware (ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exe). I started the upgrade and the zen froze at a reboot point. I reset the unit, and now it does not give any indication of having any power (battery fully charged and ac adapter plugged in and working).
When I tried to restart the firmware update, I get a message that the zen is not connected. Can this machine be saved?
    Jimfred

If you leave the player for several weeks with a discharged battery it can either (a) damage the battery beyond repair or (b) cause the battery voltage to drop so low that it won't be recharged. For the latter situation there's advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net on what to do. But BEWARE that in certain situations Lithium Ion batteries can catch on fire or explode.

  • Updated Zen Extra Firmware Now It Doesn't Work The S

I recently updated to the latest PlayForSure firmware on my 30 GB Zen Extra so that it would work with Vista. I mainly use it to listen to audio books. It used to be that when I would start the player it would remember where I was in the track I was listening to and it would start from there. Now it starts at the beginning of the track. These tracks can be several hours long and it's a PITA to have to scroll through and find the point I was at in the book. Am I setting something incorrectly, or is this something that Creative needs to address?

Theres a few other changes with the plays for sure firmware..
previously if you slected a track from the music library and hit 'play now' while there were some trascks playing form the slected music list, the slected music list would clear, and the play now track would start playing.
Now when you slect play now it drops the track at the bottom of the selected music list and keeps al the other tracks as they are.
    Idle shutdown/sleep
previously the Zen would go into a hibernation mode, and after 24 hours it would completly shutdown.
If you switched it on within 24 hours of it last being used it would start instantly and you would only see the creative/EAX ( or custom ) start screen after 24 hours of non use.
now theres no hibernation mode and the player takes longer to start, however long term battery life should be better like this.
    any other changes?

  • Is the Creative zen micro a good bye or a bad

I heard alot of horror stories about creative zen micros freezing and the headphone jacks are not working so I want ask your opinion is the creative zen micro a good bye or a cheap urelieable mp3 player. I love the design and the colors and the extra features but is the player relieable or nice to look at but really senseti've. If buying the creative zen is going to be this big investment then maybe i should get an ipod its just the ipod seems so less in comparison. Please reply so that i might have a greater understanding on what to buy.

I agree with Kerndrone. People come here mostly to look for solutions to their problems. This constitutes a lot to the negati've talk. Also, how many would purposely come into a forum just to praise a player?
ipods aren't great either. I feel that they are just an overpriced piece of gadget with very few features - whatever the zen has, the ipods doesn't (i.e. FM radio/recorder,voice recorder, simple organiser) .On the other hand, whatever the ipod has, the zen also has (with the exception of games, which i think is dumb. An audio player, as its name suggests, it for the purpose of AUDIO, some SIMPLE games? it's so dumb, i'll rather play my mobile phone's, which has color, and nicer to view.)
Further, the Zen comes with much more accessories than the ipods - velvet pouch, craddle + stand + belt clip + charger + USB cable + earphones. ipods don't come with chargers, i think. The charger is pretty expensi've S$69, and the earphones cost S$49 if bought separately.

Hello,?I am experiencing the same problem with my MicroPhoto player. One day it froze on me, and since then the firmware has been acting up. It now goes to a "Firmware Problem" screen every time?I turn it on, and after attempting to remove and re-install the firmware 3 times, it has failed to work. Before I purchased the player, I had heard bad things about Creative replacement costs and how the Zen Micro has many problems as well. It looks like our players have lost the HDD and need to be replaced, which I assume will cost more than its worth... The one reason Creative will never beat out the iPod is because of their player glitches and lack of willingness to correct them. Anybody with more information on the hdd dying problem, could you let me know if you managed to send it in, and how much is cost, etc?

  • Zen Extra to pc connection prob

I've been using my zen extra for a while until suddenly when I connected it to my pc it wasn't recognized. My pc made this sound that means that the connection didn't work or something like that. The Nomad explorer in "my computer" also said that it was not connected. I tried downloading a new driver (non of them worked) and re-installing the stuff that was on the disc it came with. That obviously didn't work either. I was then told by a friend to do the clean disk thing, which didn't do anything. I don't know what is going on so some help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have problems with my ZEn 8GB. I believe the software is not up to par and the stuff from Creative is not very well done.
Within a few minutes with my IPOD Nano, I was off and rochin' with firmware AND software updates - no flippin' issues like I have had with this ZEN 8GB.
To bad it is a present for my son
!!! Might be buying him an Apple product as well so I don't spend precious time figuring out how to get around the Creative software and firmware issues!!
    Good luck to you!

  • Zen Extra 30

Hello I have just updated my Zen Extra 30GB unit to the latest firmware 2.0.03.
I have also updated to Media Source 5.0.38 twice and still notice the following.
)?? When I attach my player to my pc via usb, it is very slow to recognise the player, it takes approximately 2 minutes before the files are listed to screen.
2)?? When I search my music library the results are almost instant, not so when I search my mp3 player it can take 5 minuets or more and this is only using about 6GB of the 30GB available.
3)?? Also I have noticed that when selecting my mp3 player in the sources pane Genre, Artist & Album panes are no longer available, but are when viewing my music library.
I also have a second Creative unit, a Zen NX 30GB and I don?t have any of the above problems with this unit. Strange?
Using Windows XP Pro with all updates installed. Windows Media Player installed and rolled back to version 0 to enable creative firmware update.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Pat D.

What you are expierencing are the results of the PlayforSure firmware in your Zen Xtra. Its just sucks, I wish had not upgraded. The only way to make your computer sync faster with the Zen Xtra is to place your music in folders. For example group your music by Album, Genere, or Artist. This will lesson the amout of items it must load at startup and in windows.Also...make sure?you are using USB 2.0 controllers?in your computer, it sounds like you may be?using .. Or is 5 min loading 6 GB an exageration? At any rate. The PlayforSure firmware is alot?slower than the plain firmware, and you will loose some functionality with Media Source.Message Edited by TimT on 0-6-200708:54 AM

  • ZEN StonePlus-Semaphore timeout period expired+firmware issue

Hello, im new here, i apolgize if the topic with same problem already exist. (i found similar, but from 2007.)
I have a problem with my Zen Stone Plus 2GB. The firmware is broken i think. It wont turn up, pc wont recognize it in any way.
    I tried this :
    http://forums.creative.com/t5/MP3-Pl...67B37F890FAA05
Hey I keep replying to myself. But this time it's good news, I've fixed the problem!
Here are the steps I performed:
. Put the player in recovery mode with these instructions (I was only able to do this once so follow the instructions carefully):
    Here are the instructions:
    a. Download and install the Mass Storage Drivers from the website.
    b. Press and hold the Play button while connecting your player to the PC. If you have a one-piece player then remove the battery first.
    c. Keep pressing Play until the New Hardware Wizard starts - this will only happen the first time you put your player into Recovery Mode.
    d. Complete the New Hardware Wizard.
To check that you are in Recovery Mode open Device Manager (right-click My Computer and choose Properties, then the Hardware tab and Device Manager) and look for a Player Recovery Device entry.
When in Recovery Mode you can reload the firmware.
    2. DO NOT INSTALL THE RIGHT FIRMWARE FOR ZEN STONE PLUS, instead upload the firmware for the MuVo player: http://files.creative.com/manualdn/D...W_LF__2_03.exe
    3. After the firmware has been updated go into recovery mode again but this time upload the correct firmware for Zen Stone Plus: http://is.europe.creative.com/suppor...ame=Windows+XP
VOILA! The player has risen from death and can continue to be enjoyed!
And this says the same :
    http://www.mycreativefansite.com/200...ue-on-zen.html
NOW what I have done :
. Installed drivers for creative players from their site [done]
    2. Inserted the player to the PC [done]
    3. Installed the "MP3 Player Recovery Device Drivers" (mentioned in above link) [done]
    4. My player is now in "recovery mode" it was recognized as "Player recovery device" [done]
    5. I tried to install the firmware for MUVO players (again see the link above) but it came up with the "Operating system reported error: The semaphore timeout period has expired" [fail]
    6. I tried to install the latest Zen Stone Plus firmware from creative site but again - "Operating system reported error: The semaphore timeout period has expired" [fail]
    http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/430/aerhbae.th.jpg - picture here !
    I tried MUVO V200.
That error should came up within the installation of ZEN firmware, not the MUVO firmware. But my problem is : The MUVO firmware does the same error as the ZEN firmware.
I also tried different firmware, for MUVO T200. It wont even turn on the update - "Your player is not connected, please connect your player" it says.
Reseted milion times and the battery is charged by the way.
ps : sorry for my english
    Thanks for your help !

    Anyone?

  • Jukebox zen extra reboot prob

My 40 gB Jukebox Zen Extra reboots fairly frequently, no matter how gently I handle it. The simple act of putting it into my pocket can cause it to reboot. I see no reference to this problem in the FAQ. Has anyone else had this problem? I've only had the player since February of this year.

I contacted Creative's support people via e-mail. They suggested that it was a firmware problem. I uninstalled the original firmware and downloaded and installed the updated version from their website, per their recommendation.
Took the player out with me this morning, and it still seems to have the same problem. Recommendations would be welcomed.

  • Zen Extra Not Detected after upgr

    Hi All,
I have a 30GB Zen Extra with firmware .03.02 and an XP ServPak 2 laptop with all current critical updates. This morning I upgraded from MediaSource Organizer 2.0.07 to Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 5.0.38.
When I run MediaSource Player/Organizer 5.0.38 it does not detect my Zen Extra (it says "player not connected"). When I run the old version of MediaSource Organizer (version 2.0.07) it detects the player just fine.
I tried to look thru the Knowledge Base but all of my search terms did not provide any useful answers.
Any way to get MediaSource Player/Organizer 5.0.38 to connect to my Zen Extra?
And why is the old version of MediaSource Organizer still on my system? Shouldn't the upgrade delete it's
    Thanks!
    Advait

must be a common issue. Same thing happens to me with my Zen Sleek.
What I'm going to try is deleting ALL Creative stuff and starting over. It is probably a software bug. I don't expect it to work, but I will give it a shot.

  • Zen Extra harddisk prob

My Zen Extra will only go into rescue mode when turned on. If I then proceed to try a "Format All" or a "Reload OS" it says I have a harddisk problem. I have tried to "Clean Up" but it doesnt do anything, it just sits there in recovery mode. I have tried to reload my firmware, but with no result, as it takes longer than the life of the battery to load (it sits there with one bar filled, and doesnt change for hours) and It refuses to let me try it while plugged into the charger.
    What should I do?

alright i just tried the newest version of the firmware for the umpteenth time and SURPRISE! it works. i dont have to reinstall it everytime the silly thing fails a transfer, but it still fails transfers after a few files. any ideas?

  • Using a power bank good or bad for iphone battery lifespan?

I currently use iphone 5, i see many aid product made now such as power bank,
but a question comes in my mind , is that good or bad for our battery lifespan?

Are you referring to cases with battery packs in them?
If so, most have a switch to turn the battery in the case on or off.
Having the iPhone or any phone in a battery case is neither good or bad.  It is merely a way to extend the "life" of the device between charges without the need to physically plug the device in as there is always the extra battery onboard.
