Zen Micro as a portable

I'm trying to find more information on using the . I brought this with the intent of using it as both MP3 player and portable HD, and I heard from a friend that it isn't compatiable on a Mac as a portable HD. Is this true? I thought it would be like practically every other MP3 player, and act like a standard external harddri've when I plug it into a computer (PC or Mac) without installing any software... If I can't use this on a Mac, I'll be sorely disappointed, since I use Macs at uni'versity, and have a PC at home. Maybe I should have gone with an ipod mini instead. ~_~

On my Zen Micro, the firmware version is .0.03e (French version). I didn't install the last version (2.00.2e with PlaysForSure) because it only works with Windows XP, and I have W2k at work and Wxp at home. So, I can't say more about that new version...
One thing is sure: when you plug the Zen Micro in Removable disk mode, you can't see the music files installed on your Zen. In this mode, you only see a sort of "partition" which is completely different of the music partition. In fact, it's a working space you can use to transfer files from one computer to another. For example, if you can't install any software on your work computer, you can use the removable disk to transfer music files and when you are at home, copy these files on your hard disk and transfer them with Creative MediaSource software.
Hope this helps!Alain

  • Zen Micro as a portable HardDisk: PROBLEM WITH BIG FI

    Hello,
i own a Zen Micro 5 GB, firmware is 2..02.
When i tried to put a DIVX-movie on it, to take it to another computer, the file (around 700MB) was put succesfully on the Zen Micro's harddisk, but when i tried to copy it to other computers FROM the Zen, it failed, giving an error about insufficient memory. (on the zen i suppose, because this error came on different, good computers). Also, smaller files (like mp3) give no problems with this.
IS THE ZEN MICRO ABLE NOT ONLY TO STORE LARGE FILES, BUT TO COPY THEM AS WELL, because using it as a portable harddisk was one of my main reasons for choosing this product.
Or is my product faulty? Or firmware?
Thank you for reactions, (others who experience this?), suggestions or solutions!
    Greetings!

  • Zen Micro as a portable storage devic

Does anyone know if it is possible to put anything but audio files onto a Creative Zen Micro? and if so could someone tell me/link me to somwhere telling me how?
Things im talking about are, files like word Documents etc... I-pod's are able to hold .txt files and you can view them on the screen, so id rather my i-pod owning friend didnt get one up on me...
    Cheers, in advance

You CAN store files one the device, but this is on another part of the harddisk then your music library. You must choose the capacity of this "Removable Disk"-mode when you first use it. It is found in Menu>Extra>Removable Disk. When you select this, music stops playing and you can only use this function unless you press the back button. If you use Removable disk mode you will be able to use it as a usb-device on every PC.

  • Zen Micro portable Hard-dr

Hi there. I'm thinking of buying myself a zen mp3 player, probably the micro. I know that it can be used as a portable USB hard-dri've, but what are the limitations on this? I take it that no drivers are required for this, but which OS's is it compatible with. I am especially interested in Windows 2000, and (I know its doubtful) Windows 98 First Edition.
Also, I have heard of possible firmware updates in the future that may give this feature to the Zen Touch. Is this just rumour? If it is true, I may buy the Zen Touch instead.
Any help on this would be appreciated

Sorry pal, the Zen Micro does not support USB Massi've Storage (UMS), so It doesn't work as a HardDriver once attached to a Computer, like memory keys do. I don't know a thing about firmware upgrades that would provide UMS to those players, people say there won't be any because it would change the way it manages its song library. I think Creative doesn't want to add this feature for some reason other than the problem it would cause to the inner workings of the library. There's a couple of posts discussing this matter, give a look at them

<font face="Garamond">i just got a warfedale cd player which is supposed to be able to play music from mp3s or usb device but when i plug in my zen micro photo via usb to the front, it just charges and doesn't play. it does work on my brother's archos mp3 but not my mum's smaller archos. hers and mine both charge thru usb, his doesn't, so maybe that's?y?i thought that maybe a lead going from jack plug to usb might work on mine but can't find one anywhere, tho the guy in one shop said he could make one he didn't think it would work and that it should work thru usb anyway. i now wonder whether its just down to settings. can anyone help with this?:robotmad::manmad::womanmad:?

  • Creative Zen Micro with a ! on its side: not work

I had the Zen Micro installed in my computer but it stopped working. If I now connect the portable device nothing appears, and it tells me that I have to install the drivers. I put the cd in, but at some point it gives me back an error message saying that the .inf files refers to a service that doesn't work. What am I supposed to do?Does it have anything to do with a usb problem?

    ANY IDEAS?

  • Zen Micro not recognized in Dev. Mgr. or Media Sou

OK, I got this Zen Micro off of Ebay. It has some songs already loaded on it, they work fine, sound is great. It came with the CD, and I installed it onto my computer (XP SP2). I'm under the impression the USB cable it came with works because I plugged it into the wall charger and got a full charge, and when I plug the USB cable into the computer the charge icon shows up. But the device didn't show up in Media Source or in the Device Manager. There is no Windows Portable Device listing, nothing Creative listed under the USB listing, and no Other/Unknown listing.
The player has firmware 2.2.02. I updated the Media Source to 3.30.2. After I read that the version 2.x is for the PlaysforSure thing I downloaded an update for MS that said it was for PFS and the Zen Micro. Then I tried to install an update for the Zen Micro Media Explorer [the one that says: Zen Micro Media Explorer (version 4.00.27) and Zen Micro Media Explorer (PlaysForSure?) (version .00.2)] but it got to the point in the install for me to plug in and turn on the player, which I did, but I had to exit out of the install because it still didn't see it and wouldn't continue any farther.
I've read the links given in the sticky topic up top about Playsforsure/Zen. I have WMP .0.572.5230. I saw a bunch of older threads about WMP causing problems but it appears by now that has been fixed?
The computer is a Dell Dimension E52 bought in January. I can't do the steps for unplugging all the other USB devices because my keyboard, mouse, and external HDD (which I use for almost everything) are plugged into them. I've tried the player on the 4th USB port in the back of the computer and both the ones in the front.
I haven't tried anything with the cleanup thing or firmware because a) I'm terrified because I've seen so many threads about firmware issues destroying the player and b) I can't update the firmware without the computer seeing the player, right?
I think that's about all the information I have to supply so far. The mp3 player is supposed to be a birthday present for my husband (his party is this weekend) so I'm really hoping I'm missing something obvious and quick to fix!! If anyone has anything to share I'm all ears!

    C'mon.... please?

  • Zen Micro FM Improvemen

    Hi
I have just recently got my Micro (updated with the latest firmware)
    and its great!!!
The only feature I have a few small problems with is the FM radio,
I am in the UK, and the reception is not brilliant.
In all the portable radio devices I hav owned in the past, manually switching
the reception mode to Mono on Stereo stations, improved reception.
The Zen Micro radio, automatically sets the reception mode for a station, and you cant manually switch a stereo station to mono reception (at least, I don't seem to be able to)
Do you think a possible firmware upgrade would make it possible to do that, and save the desired setting with the preset? Something like choosing the mode between MONO/STEREO/AUTO
Apart from that, everything is excellent!
    well done creative!
    Dave

i have the same problem the reception of the FM its very fuzzy a MONO/STEREO switcher could be a good solution..

  • Zen Micro Photo Conce

I am about to purchase a Zen Micro Photo. I am choosing it over the Zen Micro because of the many posts about the headphone problem on the Zen, the clearer screen on the Micro Photo, and the lack of availability of the Zen Micro in the stores - very few stores are selling the Micro and many have only the Micro Photo (which leads me to believe that the Micro is being phased out - at least in the marketplace). I have some concerns about the Micro Photo - there seems to be some posters on this group who have a buzz from the screen. Since many reviews of the Micro Photo say how great the sound is, I am going to assume, perhaps foolishly, that the buzz has been taken care of in the recent releases or this is not as common a problem as some would like to state. My other concern is and question is how fragile are these? There are warnings about NOT jogging with the Micros. I have not seen this with other companies'hd players. I plan to use this in a car. Is this going to be a problem? Sometimes roads are bumpy.
One of the main reasons that I have chosen the Zen is the bookmarking features. I use the mp3 player for audiobooks and I want to be able to set a bookmark in mid track of a book, listen to something else, and then come back to that same place in the book and continue on - which from the Micro/Microphoto manuals I should be able to do. Is this correct?
Surprisingly, few mp3 players can do this - the Ipod can't despite it's claim that it can.
    I appreciate any feedback.

    Information on LiON battery lifespans.
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.
Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. (Read more in 'Choosing the right battery for portable computing', Part Two.)
Aging of lithium-ion is an issue that is often ignored. A lithium-ion battery in use typically lasts between 2-3 years. The capacity loss manifests itself in increased internal resistance caused by oxidation. Eventually, the cell resistance reaches a point where the pack can no longer deli'ver the stored energy although the battery may still have ample charge

  • Zen Micro problem, please help

I changed my Zen Micro's firmware to "PlaysForSure", but then I wanted to get back the original firmware.
So I used the "Recovery mode" to erase PlaysForSure firmware (v. 2.2.02) and then tried to load the original firmware (v. ..0).
Then my problems begun: firmware updater says "Your player is not connected, please connect your player.", altough my player is correctly connected and the drivers and other Creative's stuff are installed.
Computer (WinXP) ofcourse detects the player (as a PlaysForSure device).
I also tried to load the PlayesForSure firmware again, but it didn't work either.
So, what can I do to fix my Zen Micro's firmware?
Does the warranty cover this kind of things?
I would be very pleased if someone knows what to do, because my player really doesn't work now at all.

Okey, now I have uninstalled WMP and WMP Runtime Format, and installed WMP 0 again, but still firmware updater doesn't find my player connected. The player appears in the device manager as a "Portable media player", not under USB devices as when it was running with firmware ..0. If I try to uninstal the drivers, driver uninstaller totally freezes, and I think that all USB devices freeze too. So what can I do now?
    pie wrote:
how do you install wmp0, i tried but it wont let me because its an older version
Open add/remove programs, click "show updates", scroll to windows updates, uninstall WMP and then WMP Runtime Format (after every uninstall you will have to restart your computer). Then download WMP 0 from http://www.microsoft.com and install it.

  • Zen Micro- Cannot Transfer Duplicate Fi

I got a Creative Zen Micro 6GB mp3 player for Christmas, and am having a little bit of trouble with transferring some songs. It won't let you put 2 songs with the same name on! For example, I want to put Green Day's Dookie on it, along with Green Day Interenational Superhits. But since the Superhits collection has songs from Dookie, an error window comes up saying that "there is already a file with the same name, do you want to skip tranferring this file or replace it's". Neither! I want it on twice on both albums! Yes, I can rename it so it dosen't do this, but I just want it on twice!I also have the same problem when 2 bands have the same name for a song (Green Day: In The End, Linkin Park: In The End). They are 2 completely different files, and I cannot put both on!Does anyone know what to do?

You can easily transfer a duplicate song to the Micro if you remove Zen Media Explorer and just use the standard Windows Explorer interface as that does not have any checks and duplicates can go on and off easily.
But I have a feeling its a tagging issue. It varies by programs, but some check the ID Tags as well as the filename, so yes change the filename of the songs, if it still wont go then try the song tags... Still not working? Then use the standard Windows Explorer interface to transfer. You dont need to remove Zen Media Explorer, at least I dont think so... Access your player via Control Panel -> Portable Media Devices. Hopefully it wont open up the Zen Media Explorer interface....
This would work only if you are running the PlaysForSure firmware.Message Edited by DM on 2-26-2005 02:5 AM

  • Should I wait to buy ZEN Micro Ph

I am getting a part-time job soon and want to buy the ZEN Micro, but the ZEN Micro Photo is coming out in Summer 2005, and that looks good, so should I get the ZEN Micro or wait for the Colour screen version?
P.S I had my Muvo TX 256MB for 3 weeks and is great, though I should have waited and got the 52MB version it is only 70GBP at eBuyer now.

I was in the same situation as you, wanting a Zen Micro but wondered if I should wait till the Zen Micro Photo came out. I decided that I didn't need the colour screen to show people photos and just wanted a small portable music player so I went with a Black Zen Micro and I am very happy that I did

  • Zen Micro Audio Recording Opt

I'm shopping around for a digital music player. I noticed that the Zen Micro has an audio recording option, which will supposedly record up to 0 hours, is that correct? I was wondering if this recording would save as a file I could transfer to my computer or if I must listen to it on the device. Also, I think I read that the largest (data?) file size that can be held on the player is 2GB. Would this apply to a maximum-length recording? How big of a file would that be? Also, do audiobooks fit on the Micro? And the same questions apply to recordings taken from the radio.
    Thank you!
    Amber

I concur with college boy, additionally the voice recorder is surprisingly good quality, but the FM reciever gets, like all of the small portables I've owned, inconsistant to poor reception. This may be due to my location as I have seen posts on this forum claiming excellent reception. Either way, I doubt the recordings are anywhere near the quality you would get from downloading from your computer.
I have transfered several audio books from cd>computer>micro, and because the files from audio discs is usually encoded at a very low bit-rate 64kb or even less, they take up very little space on the micro.
One caution about audio books is that the tagging is usually very simple ie. "track 0, 02, etc so that with multi-disc books, which most are, you will either have to load one disc at a time and delete it when you are finished, or rename the tracks on discs subsequent to disc one or the new disc will replace the old one. When renaming tracks on second and third etc discs use two letters and three numbers.
For example: For John Grisham's--King of Torts, I named the tracks KT00, KT002 etc.
Audio discs are a nice complement to the music by the way. I get tired of tunes after a couple of hours and enjoy listening to a story for awhile. I listen to "Car Talk" and "A Prarrie Home Companion" on NPR on weekends.

  • Zen micro car d

Are there any suggestions or links to point me at for a zen micro car holder fixture. I have mine plugged into the aux on my cd deck and was wondering if anybody has created a pratical good looking way to mount it or hold so it doesnt have to sit in my ashe tray (which I luckily don't use).

there is alot of FM transmitters out there that can be used for any portable audio device.
iRock has an FM transmiter, just go to any radio shack and ask for an irock wirless music adapter.
iTrip's benifit is that it plugs into the iPod, tapping into it's batties instead of using a car power adapter. Of coures because of that you can't use that with other players.
The irock thing works with any device whether it's an I-pod, CD player, or Zen micro. Anything with an earphone jack will work with it. You can even use it to liten to portable DVD players on your car stereo.
However if you got a tape deck it would be much cheaper to get a tape deck adapter to do all those things.Message Edited by Takezo on 03-2-2005 06:25 PM
