Zen Micro Crashes on low batt

I purchased my Zen Micro 5gig last May, and had no problems til January, when while listening the battery went to 0 bars and froze and wouldn't turn off. Took the battery out and it would start, but would freeze on the main screen. I cam on here for advice and I ended up having to reformat. It was running fine since then, and I finally managed to get most of my lost songs back on. And then today, the battery was running low, so I decided to charge it from the computer while listening. I had bar left, was listening fine, hit the pause for a second, and have since not been able to do anything. It appears frozen on that screen. All the buttons still make a sound when hit, but it won't lock or turn off, and appeared to still be charging. After about 45mins the screen went blank, and will now not turn on and will not charge through USB. It was updated with new firmware in Feb. So I was wondering if other experience this problem. What should I do to get it to turn back on? Is it a bug with mine? Do you think I will have to reformat and loose all my files again? :-(?Thanx for your help

agrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
so last night, i installed the latest firmware and did the disc cleanup.
this morning, the zen micro crashed/froze again!!
- turned it on
- creative splash screen (this screen now scares me)
- zen micro splash screen... frozen, started playing song then became bzzzzzzzzzz sound
- removed battery
- started back up in recovery mode
- did disc cleanup
- rebooted
- creative screens again
- rebuilding library
worked after that. of course i had to add all the songs back into the now playing.
if i'm going to have to do this all the time, then i'm going to start to regret buying this player.
will reformating the disc help?
do creative techs ever visit this forum?

• Zen Micro Crashes After Song Trans

after i have finished transferring songs for windows media to my micro, and then i disconnect it (even when the white arrow screen shows), it crashes and i have to remove the battery. awhile ago it wasnt even transferring, anybody else having similar problems or a solution? pls help

Tried a disk cleanup? To access the Rescue Mode on the Zen Micro, remove the battery, hold the power switch to the "on" position, reinsert the battery. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
Can you check with another PC to see if you get the same problem?

• Creative Zen Micro crash

I bought a white Creative Zen Micro a week or so ago, and upgraded its firmware to .02.05 [the executable on the Creative site was entitled PCFW_LB__02_05_PDE.exe"]. A day or so ago, my Zen Micro started to lock up during playback. I could reset it by taking the battery out and restarting in recovery mode, but since then it has completely crashed and won't restart no matter what I try.
In between the first lock up and the catastrophic crash this evening, I did a disk cleanup, reformatted the hard disk, and reloaded the firmware twice. Nothing seemed to work, and I'm really worried something is seriously wrong with either the hardware or the battery - but I don't see how that can be.
I'm an advanced PC user, and the only things I did out of the ordinary were a) to occasionally drag and drop MP3s in a Windows XP explorer pane as opposed to using the bundled Creative software, and b) I re-charged the battery via the USB cable as opposed to the mains cable - but the Zen never gave any indication on having battery problems.
Has anyone experienced similar problems? If so, I'd certainly appreciate any advice you might have for me.
I've contacted Creative Support, but I don't know how long they'll take to get back to me. Does anyone know how long it takes them to respond?

Sounds like it's faulty, unfortunately . Try and get the store where you bought it to replace it for you.

• Zen Micro crash - recovery mode does not w

Well - in the nearly 2 years I've had my Zen Micro with no real problems - it finally crashed on me big time.
The other night I plugged it in to my computer's USB port to recharge. Every so often, it will not "dock" and I have to unplug it and plug it in again - no big deal. This time, it did not connect, and I did not notice, and it sat connected in that state for about 24-36 hours before I noticed it. Now, the unit is completely frozen - when trying to start it up, it only gets to the second screen (with the CREATIVE logo only) and then just sits and stares back at me. Nothing has worked in recovery mode, either re-boot or disc clean up. I even tried to just erase those whole thing but both format and clean up finctions do not work either. It just sits there idly.
Is there any other way to force a reset on the unit's Should I try to re-install the firmware (in the latter case - I'm not sure if I can if it won't reach the point of docking with my PC).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, I'm not sure if it's reassuring or just depressing that I'm not alone here. Exact same problem - after over a year of working great, I turned it on a couple days ago and the stupid thing froze on the "Creative" screen. Every time I restart it, same thing, plus I noticed that it makes a little boinging skippy noise. Anything you choose in recovery mode, it just freezes. Also, I've noticed that it now smells weird. As if, perhaps, electronics have become slightly singed.
Bah! At this point I think I might try Ouija's method. Even the Creative FAQ suggests it as a last resort!
"If this fails, or if you are getting the "hard dri've error" message on startup, listen closely to the Zen when it starts up. If you can hear the hard dri've repeatedly clicking at the end of the start up chances are the heads or related mechanics are jammed in some way. At your own risk you can try and free this by firstly powering the player down, then giving it a hard slap on the side. An alternati've and less drastic approach is to hold it in your outstretched arm with the screen towards you and twist your wrist back and forth as quickly as you can."
I've already given it a shake, and no results. But I can hear something rattling inside, which I'm sure is a great sign. :/
If smacking doesn't work, then I guess I'll have to buy a Nano at the Boxing Day sales... How sad that even now I would probably buy a Creative over one of those ugly ass Shuffle things and the annoyance of iTunes. I have no principles whatsoever. I would never drop more than $00 on one again though. And no more harddri've players. At least I've got a nice white $250 paperweight for my desk now...

• Help!!...Zen Micro crashed, not responding, what do I

OK, here's the deal:
I wanted to transfer some files from my old computer to my new one using the data storage feature on my Zen Micro. I turned the player on, plugged it into the USB port, and it immediately shut off. When I tried to turn it back on, it showed the first two images (the Creative inc copyright thing, and then just the one that says 'Creative'), then it got stuck on that and the contrast faded out to the point where you couldn't even read it. I took the battery out and the same thing happened when I put it back in. I did it again and tried to do the recovery thing but that menu faded out, too, and the touchpad wouldn't respond. I felt the Micro starting to get warm so I took it out again and just let it rest for several minutes. Now, it just won't turn on at all.
Can anyone help, or is my Micro a dead duck?

I have experienced a similar problem. I was simply listening to a track when the player started to make a loud buzzing noise. It then shut off. I cannot reboot the machine. I have no idea to do a hard reset. The battery was near full. There is no response when I plug it in. Worst yet, I lost my receipt. I have had the thing less than 2 weeks. If this thing is broken I swear on all that is holy I will never purchase a Creative product again. Moreover, I will tell everyone I know to avoid their products. Please help.

• Zen Micro crashed, now cant get into me

I shut my micro down, it stuck on the shutting down screen, I left it for a while then i took the battery out, when I put it back in now it comes up with the creative logo and non of the buttons work ?
Anyone had this problem, im not happy opnly got it friday and its broke already !

ryonavin wrote:I would recommend trying to reset it. When you take the battery out there is a little hole that you can stick the end of a paperclip or a ballpoint pen into to flip the reset switch. That fixes most of the issues.
DON'T DO THIS! The small hole on the Micro is NOT a reset switch! It's the MICROPHONE!
To access the Rescue Mode on the Zen Micro you need to remove the battery. While replacing the battery in the back of the player, switch the power button over and keep it held over. The player should boot up into Rescue Mode and from there you should be able to select Clean Up. This acts as a defrag of your firmware and should reset the player to default. If this doesn't work or the player freezes during the clean up try a Format All ( this will erase all media on the hard disk) Again, if this freezes or hangs, the player will most likely need to be replaced.

• Creative Zen Micro crashi

Urgh! My creative Zen Micro 6gb, Keeps on freazing in the middle of the song and it's frustrating. I take the battery to take it out then I need to charge the battery whilst doing that turn it on. It's stays on and then it won't load up the next time i want to turn it on. Seriously I really had enough of Creative's product. I wanted creative a few years ago and I got a creative and this is my sceond player which faults on me. I don't know if it's just me or what. The first one I had to take back and given an OLDER model in exchanged. I wasn't pleased with that AT all. If there is possibly no soloutions I may just hide it and get myself a new player when I have money. So yes, any soloutions

clean-up will not but format will do a format as a last option

• Zen Micro vs. MicroPhoto Batter

I want to buy a backup battery for my Zen Microphoto. I saw several Zen Micro batteries for sale on ebay for around 20$ but they are generic brand vs. the Creative brand which costs double. My questions:
a) is the generic brand inferior to the Creative brand in terms of batterie life?
b) are the Zen Micro batteries the same/are they compatible with the MicroPhoto batteries?

Does anyone know since it doesn't appear to be a wise idea to use a Zen Micro battery in a Zen MicroPhoto, when the standalone batteries for the Zen MicroPhoto would be available? I have not checked in stores, but it is not on any of the international Creative.com Shop websites nor I have I heard it mentioned anywhere since reading that the Zen MicroPhoto battery is indeed different from the original Micro one.

• Zen Micro crash

First all, I have to say the ZM is a fantastic player having owned it for a couple of month now.
the only problem i have with it is that at times the player sometimes crashes/hangs at random times whenever i transfer songs over.
Say for instance i'm copying an album over to the player, it copies over as normal. however sometimes just a random track, the transfer fails and causes the player to hang. the only way then to restart is to take the battery out and put it back in. When trying to transfer the same track over that it failed on, it works fine (well about after the 3rd or 4th attempt).
Can get a bit annoying when you have to keep taking the battery in and out a few times just to reset the player.
Anyone else experienced this? is this a problem with the player itself (i.e. the hard dri've...)?
I've seen around on some of the other posts that people are experiencing crashes/hangs when the player boots up but fortunatly i have not experienced this yet (touch wood)....
Also the "Back" button is sometimes slow to respond at times which leads me to believe that the touchpad might be a bit faulty?....althought the rest of the control buttons work fine.
I have firmware version .02.05.
any suggestions welcome
thanks.

Connectivity issues are hard to troubleshoot as there are so many possible places where the problem can be. This article here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net has?a long list of things to try.

• Zen Micro Firmware, Drivers etc probl

Only yesterday my Zen Micro crashed and i lost every single music file i had on it (over 900) when i went to sync music back on to it WMP said that it had an unknown error therefore it could not put the music onto my player. I then unistalled the software and since i had lost the disc i got the software from the creative site however it then said my zen was not detected and would not install the software. I left it for a while and came back to fidn that when i turn on the Zen Micro it says firmware problem and brings me straight to the recovery screen. I tried downloading new firmware from the creative site and it says my zen is not detected so it cannot upload the new firmware. I have tried contacting Customer Support and they are no help what so ever so this is kind of my last resort.
Any help is greatly appriciated
Jonny Toye

I think that you have installed to many drivers, and there is an conflict! I will recommend that you try your player on another pc (if possible offcourse).
And i think that you have to Synchronize your player in wmp0.
To format a Zen Portable Media Center:
Connect the player to your PC
Open Windows Media Player 0.
Click on the File button, CDs and Devices, and then click on Synchronize.
Select the Zen Portable Media Player in the Device pane (if you have multiple devices connected), and click on the Format storage media button

• External charger for Zen Micro batt

I just got my new Zen Micro and so far it is the best looking mp3 player I have seen but I just hope (knock on wood) tha is doesn't run into any of the issues posted. The one thing that I thought was the best feature about the Zen Micro is that I can remove the battery from the unit but to really make it usefull I should be able to have one battery in the Zen MIcro while the other is charging. This way I can have non stop tunes. Is there an external battery charger for the Zen battery?
Also, how do I know if I have an older unit that had all the problems with the headphone jacks?
One more question, when I try to pause I sometimes have to pres the pause/play button two or three times. I have the touch pad setting to medium. Should I start to worry or is this normal.
Thanks

There's no external charger. The low volume of sales will likely make it a high cost item, so Creative have presumably decided it's not worth it. If you really want you can always buy another player I'm guessing this won't be far off the likely cost of an external charger. There are some third party Lithium Ion chargers out there, but you need to have a special plate designed for the battery terminals. You'll have to Google to find them as I don't have the link to hand.
I find with pause that sometimes there's a delayed response, as if the player is busy. Wait a few seconds and try again, rather than say mashing the controls

• Lower sound Zen Vision Plus than Zen Micro Pho

Hello! I have had Zen Micro/Zen Micro Photo in -2 years, before I this year switched to some Asono player, but the sound was low on that, and I wanted to go back to Creative for it's quality and sound. So I bought the new small Zen Vision Plus, very satisfied with video & other cool new functions! And to secure me a good sound, I bought big Creative headphones for 400 NOK, and they are very good with good sound and base(bass). But whenever I used the MP3 player, the sound dissapointed me, I also tried with the default earphones which followed, and the sound is still not as high as on Creative Zen Micro/Photo.My friend has Creative Zen Micro the old one, and we started the same song at the same time on both our players, and tried with the default headphones and the new headphones which I bought. And belei've you me the sound on his MP3 (Zen Micro) was much louder then on mine. So it is dissapointing to see that I am stuck with this MP3 with lower sound. I love the design & functions on Zen V Plus, and love the sound on Zen Micro. So I don't want to go back to Zen Micro. Is there some way to fix this? Some sort of upgrade? Or has it something to do that the MP3 in USA has lower sound and MP3 in Europe has higher, or the other way around? How do I check where my MP3 is from?I hope someone here has tips & tricks or solution to this problem, very annoying that my MP3 is "almost perfect"! I got to go play tennis now, waiting for a positi've reply, thanks a lot guys! Every single post is helpfull, thanks again!

well man all i can say is...bigger isnt always better. I have a Zen Micro Photo, its about a year old, i just have regular good ol target special headphones and its loud enough to blow an ear drum. Sometimes if i dont feel like?wearing headphones, i just turn it all the way up and set the headphones on my desk or something. sooooooooooooooooo i would just stick to the stuff you know is good...plus the micro photo is BAMF
