Zen Micro M Won't Charge, Need Advice

I got a Creative Zen M from my dad for my birthday the other day, and I can't get it to do anything.
Its not charging or showing its connected to my computer. I kept getting a warning that said I was plugging in a high speed device to a lot speed USB port, so I ran out and bought a Belkin 2.0 Hi-Speed USB card for $30 thinking this would fix all my problems, but it hasn't.
I read some people here saying that after its fully charged, then it will show its connected. So I left it hooked up to my computer from 8:00pm last night to 0:30am today, and it still hasn't charged anymore then the sli'ver it came with. It will turn on and let me look through menus, etc., but it keeps giving me a low battery warning.
The lightening bolt is flashing and everything, and I don't understand why it shows its charging, because its not.
I'm at a complete lost here, and upset that I put in a 2.0 USB card, and its still not working.
How do I get this to charge?
I don't want my dad to know its not working, as he would be very upset that I'm having trouble even being able to turn my birthday present on.
I have a Dell, running Windows XP Pro V. 2002. Intel Pentium 4, 2.800 Ghz, .00 GB of RAM, with 2.0 Hi-Speed USB port. I've connected both an Ipod, and a Samsung mp3 player with no issues what so ever. And the USB card I installed does work, as I tested it on transfering from a digital camera.

CHO53N,
Does your XP have at least service pack (best to get service pack 2). Also, try changing the player to the Removable Disk mode and see if it will charge through that way.

  • Zen Micro battery won't charge, can't turn on MP3 pla

    Hey guys,
I;ve bought a Creative Zen Micro 5GB, 3 weeks ago and it was working GREAT...until now. I was using it one night until the battery completely drained off and the Zen Micro turned off by itself. The icon "LOW BATTERY" flashed for a few seconds and the unit basically shuts down.
I tried to plug-in the USB 2.0 cable provided by Creative into a PC USB 2.0 port
. the MP3 player wouldn't start up. The blue light glowed, followed up by the intro 'Creative' screen and then it died off. That happens everytime i plugged the unit into a USB port.
    2. On the upper right screen on the unit, it showed that power is supplied by the USB port (battery + electric symbol flashing), but the battery wouldn't charge up and I can't turn it on either
    My questions are:
    a) Since the battery is dead flat, wont the unit still run/function normally if its plugged to a PC USB2.0 port?
    b) Why does my Zen Micro die off a few seconds after it's been plugged on to USB?
    c) Can't the PC USB power supply charge up my MP3 player battlery?
    Please help,
    Cheers.

  • Zen Micro Photo won't charge, start, or be recogni

    Hello board,
Yes, this is my first post, and yes I came here because I had a problem.
I did read the FAQ and have done a forum search, but didn't find this particular problem, so I hope you all can help...
My ZMP is about 3 months old. Yesterday I left it on and the battery died.
So I plugged it into my computer overnight. This morning it still won't turn on.
Now at work, I've plugged it into this this computer, tried all the different USB ports, removed and reinserted the battery, and basically done every obvious thing possible to get this to charge or even turn on. It will not.
The edge doesn't pulse, and the computer doesn't recognize that its attached.
So, now I'm at a total loss. Is the player busted? Is this an easy fix?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    ~Aaron

Ordinarily the person should be under warranty, so shouldn't have to buy a battery to resolve the issue.

  • My Zen Micro story: Busted Headphone Jack, Need Adv

First of all, I'd like to apologize beforehand for posting a topic on the headphone jack problem. I've been visiting these forums for almost two months and by now you're all probably tired of hearing about the Zen Micro's headphone jack, yada yada yada. But with that over, here's the story of my Zen Micro experience.
I got it about two months ago from Fry's Electronics. Silver 5 GB, not bad. I was really happy using it until I stumbled upon this discussion board and realized the extent of this headphone jack problem. So being the dumb "who-needs-tech-support" kinda guy I am, I opened up my Zen on the third day of having it, breaking the warranty seal in the process (big mistake). I 'fixed' the headphone jack problem by sticking a little piece of folded up paper in the metal plate holding down the jack, hoping that by doing it early the problem would never come up.
Well, two months go by and by now I've opened it again a few times just for fun, and to 'check' on the headphone jack to see if my fix did any good. Well, three days ago, I decided to open it up again and document the steps with pictures. Everything went fine, though I lost one of the two top screws in the top that you must unscrew before opening the player. Oh well, no biggie, I thought, I could always get some more at the Home Depot or something.
So that night I plug in my headphones to listen to music, and to my utter horror, the sound only comes out of one side of the headphones. I'm not sure if this is because of ) the missing screw, 2) something I did wrong while taking it apart, or 3) just the problem finally randomly surfacing like in most cases. This is when I tell myself, "Crap, you really did it now. There goes $200." I frantically open it up again and stick another piece of paper between the plate and the jack and screw that plate in really, really, tightly. I am a little relieved to find that the sound is back in both sides, though if I push hard on the headphone connector a certain way the sound will disappear in the right side.
After thinking about it, I decided that the only way to go was to get a replacement. I had read a tutorial on how to fix the headphone jack problem using epoxy and paper, only to have the maker of that tutorial report that the headphone jack problem had happened anyway (a month later). He also mentioned that even with a busted warranty, he had managed to get a replacement Zen Micro free of charge. This gave me hope.
At any rate, I fired off an RMA request on Creative's site just to see what they would say. I admitted that the warranty seal was busted. They emailed back an obviously pre-written response that gave me vague instructions on how to ship my Zen for a replacement. My questions are the following:
) What are the implications of my broken warranty? Is there any way I can receive a replacement without buying a whole new one? I really like my Zen Micro, as I'm sure many of you do too.
    2) Have any of you guys had a similar experience with RMAing? How does the whole thing work?
    3) The only person I have ever heard of with a Zen Micro lasting more than 6 months without the headphone jack problem coming up is Jeremy, one of the moderators here. The jack problem IS a general design flaw, isn't it's What should I say if Creative blames the headphone jack problem on 'abuse' or something like that? Should I let them charge me for fixing it, etc.
Thank you all, so much. I know that was a lot to read, but I have been so happy with my Zen Micro up until this point that I really want this to end well. You guys have been a great help to me these last two months already. I appreciate it a lot. -Willy CMessage Edited by beefqube on 0-22-2005 08:22 AM

Did you find out how much it would cost because of the void warranty?
If you do want to lie to them, you are on your own in this issue.
You can do what one guy suggested on buying a new micro and returning your old one. Which is wrong ethically and morally.
If you have experience in soldering or know someone that can do so might be helpful. There should be some threads about soldering it back to normal.
Well if this my situations I really don't know what to do. Since if I do send it to Creative and that my warranty is still in effet, I still have to pay $25 and my own shipping/handling charges. It would only be replaced and I don't believe they actually repair it. That $25 goes to labor cost, which is something I don't understand when they give you a replacement, where is the labor in that?
But if I did lose my warranty and Creative won't take it or would charge me more than $25+. Then I would solder them myself. I just need to find out where to begin. Maybe I should find broken headphone jack Micros on ebay and see if I could fix them.

  • Zen micro photo won't start & not detected anym

hello!?my zen micro photo started acting weirdly lately: even when the player's battery was fully charged, the player would shut itself down automatically a second or two after being turned on. i managed to access the recovery options and do a cleanup, but the problem was not solved. after, it started telling me that the battery was empty even after being charged for hours on my computer. (and the battery is only a year old or so). then?a few hours later, it even failed to turn on at all, and has stayed like that since. i could at least access the recovery console, so i tried formatting the dri've, but there was no improvement. i then tried to use the recovery utility found on your website, which updated the firmware to version 2.3 however, there was no difference, and the player still doesn't work. finally, my computer won't even detect the player anymore (although i have made no changes to the computer's configuration), and it won't even charge it, since it is not detected. (the player doesn't show any sign when it is plugged) so now, all i can get from the mp3 player is a "low battery" warning, and only when i try to access the recovery console (otherwise, nothing happens). any ideas?thank you !

just an update:i tried the "caveman repair method" (http://forums.creative.com/creativel...cending&page=3)and it ... worked... partially...at least the player now boots, although only to display a low battery warning...BUT as soon as i plug it to my computer, it crashesand i already tried the rear usb ports, no better, as well as 3 different computers, no improvment neithersooooo... anything else?maybe roasting it next time would help lol

  • Zen Micro Keys won't work after uploading tra

Monday night I downloaded all the firmware onto my new Zen micro and when I did that Napster finally let me start transferring all my music back to it. Everything seemed hunky dory so I went to bed while I waited for 200ish songs to transfer over. When I got up yesterday morning and turned on the Zen, Napster recognized that there were tracks on it, but none of the buttons worked. I couldn't flip through the menus or see anything except the main screen. So I left work early so that I could call Creative's customer service line before they closed. Basically the guy talked me through re-downloading the firmware back onto the Zen and then Ta-Da! all my playlists showed back up and I could flip through the menus and play the music. But he suggested I remove all the tracks and re-load them in case any of them had bug (but my though was....shouldn't re-downloading all the firmware DELETE all the tracks in the first place?) But whatever. I re-transfer all the tracks over to it and went to the movies. When I got home....same thing as Monday. Napster's recognizing that indeed, there are tracks on the Zen, but I can't navigate through any of it's menus and the keypad acts like it's broken. Keep in mind, I just pulled this **bleep**er out of the box MONDAY NIGHT.

Keys not working can't be related to Napster.
Run through the advice in the "My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" section of the FAQ post.
If this doesn't help the player is faulty.

  • Zen Micro has died and I need to fix it myse

    Hi,
I was using my Zen Micro one particular morning for a couple of hours (full battery) where everything was working perfectly. Later that afternoon I attempted to turn it on but nothing happened, not a single thing. Nothing lit up, I couldn't hear the HDD sound either. I thought at first it could be the battery, so when I got home I tried running it from the charger with and without the battery, both times nothing happened.
Under normal circumstances my first course of action would be to simply to get a replacement however I don't believe that will be possible as I voided the warranty recently by fixing the infamous jack problem. I fixed it myself because getting a replacement seems futile as all Zen Micro's continue to have the same design flaw.
Does anyone have any idea why my Zen has completely died on me?
Any chance I can I get a replacement?
Can any of you tell me how I could possibly fix it myself (I take full responsibility if anything breaks)?Message Edited by mark_s on -0-2005 2:05 AM

    5G Zen Micro, green
Hey, I had my zen micro for a long time since aug 9 and yesterday it broke down on me. Somehow I can't play anything. When I turn it on, it freezes and doesn't go to the menu. I tried using the recovery mode and clean it up but it froze again.
I don't know how i'm going to send it back to the factury to repair it. My micro was previously repaired like two weeks ago. The bad news is that sending back the my micro requires the reciet, but I have given it to them before and I was sure that they would give it back, but no. So how can I send it back without a reciet.

I have a 5GB Zen Micro and when I try to install my software I get the "Utility for Windows AutoPlay screen has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message.
I'm running XP and have updated Quicktime (that did the trick last time).
Can anyone help? I'm sorry, I did try to go through the FAQ but I didn't see anything and I'm trying to feed my kid and pack for a trip.
    Thanks!

I don't think so but I can't check right now-- I'm on a different computer.
I had the software installed and had to delete it to make space for something. Now I wish I'd never touched it!

  • Having big problems with Creative Zen Micro Photo!! I need much urgent help!

Hi. I am having a big problem with my MP3 Creative Zen Micro Photo device at the computer. Here is the thing:Before I bought this I had the regular Zen Micro & having fun with it. I had no problems with that when I used the Media Explorer to transfer songs. So I bought the Zen Micro Photo & installed it my computer. As normal I used the Media Explorer to transfer songs & pictures. So I reinstalled Windows XP at my computer, and when I installed the CD that followed to transfer new songs, the Windows said that it's an unknown thing I have connected in the USB.So I installed Service Pack & 2. I have tried to install drivers from the cd but it seems that there are no drivers on the cd! The big problem is that when I connect the MP3 to the computer, it doesn't read it's a Zen Micro, it's just unknown! So the Zen Micro Photo Media Explorer program doesn't work & I can't transfer songs or picture on it! And it just happened after I re-installed Windows on my computer. The same thing happened on my brother's computer after he re-installed windows. And when I connect the MP3 to the USB, it says that it's not a USB 2.0, but .! And I am sure it is 2.0 because it has always been like that before I re-installed windows. Also the MP3 does not re-charge when I put it my computer! The battery is just the same, it tries to do it but it doesn't. So I am using my sisters computer to charge the MP3 & transfer songs. I have tried everything but I can't seem to understand what the problem is? I have never experienced something like this before, and I really hope you can help me with this! To be honest I think what I am missing is the driver. So can someone PLEASE provide me the link for the driver? I have downloaded all those 3 on www.creative.com, but they are none of them! Also that playforsure firmawre thingy does not work because it sais that I have to connect my MP3, and it is connected already! Please reply as quick as possible! Thanks a lot for you kind help!
I have also sent this mail to creative support! But please help me I have had this problem for almost 2 months now! =(Message Edited by anakwalajinn on 05-0-2006 08:47 PM

  • Zen Nomad Jukebox: Won't charge after sitting

My daughters 30G Zen Nomad Jukebox Xtra sat, with the battery in, for about 3 months after she lost it due to low school grades.
After she got her grades back up, I gave it back to her, and it won't charge at all now.
?The charger itself is fine (I checked the 5V with a multimeter), and the unit was charged and working when I took it from her 3 months ago, which is why I don't understand it. I did try the reset button with a paperclip. but it didn't help.
When it's plugged into the charger, there's absolutly nothing on the screen indicating that its charging at all, when there should be an indicator light on it. HELP!!!!!!Shawn

Well, tech support got back to me with the following instructions, that didn't help me at all, but I'm hoping it will help someone else, so I'm pasting it here.
For my problem though, I still don't understand how a working player gets put into a desk drawer, and 3 months later, it comes out and won't turn on, even with the power adapter in and the battery out.
    Maybe its a magic desk.
    Any ideas.......anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
    Shawn
:::::::::::The following is pasted from tech supports email to me:::::::::::
With regards to your enquiries, I understand that you are having issues
    charging the Zen Xtra battery.
May I know if you feel any warmth on the power adaptor while charging
    the battery for 5-30 mins?
    Please try the following:
    - Remove the battery from the player.
    - Power on the DC input connecting to the player. Power on the player
without the battery in the player for 2 hours.
    - After 2 hours, place battery into the player (Check if it is charging)
    - If it is still unable to charge, remove the battery and place battery
    into the player again.
    - Repeat the following steps for at least 2 times.
    - If the charging indicator appears, charge the battery for 4 hours.
Shall the issue persists, please test the player unit with another
battery. Perharps your friends have a player of the same model? This is
to determine if the issue is with the player or the battery.

  • Zen Micro 5GB, Won't turn o

    Hey guys,
I bought a zen micro 5GB back in June of 05, its obviously past the 60 day warrenty and im trying to advoid a $20 session which might not even solve my issue....
A week ago the player stopped turning off. I am able to turn it on with the power tab, play music, charge it, everything its supposed to except power it off. The only way for me to do so is to take out the battery casuing me to rebuild my library constantly.
Does anyone have a makeshift fix for this? Does anyone have a similar problem and can give me insight as to what creative can do and how much it will cost? Any other ideas?
I called support and they will not give me an estimate unless i pay the $20 phone session charge...
I still have the orig box, receipts, and information that came with the product. There is little to no wear on it as i ONLY use it to upload music from my pc then play it on a personal stereo system i have in the house.
ThanksMessage Edited by forcex on 03-08-200603:06 PM

Try going into Recovery Mode first, and try the options there.
Try Clean Up first. If the player still works on the PC (ie you can access it there), then you could try Reload OS aswell, and then load a firmware onto the player from the PC. Otherwise it does sound like it's faulty, there is not much I can advise other than speaking to Customer Support about a possible repair.

I have tried getting into the recovery screen by taking the battery out and replacing it while holding the power button on.
