Zen Micro on USB 1.x. Works (?

I know that it must be connected on a USB 2.0 port but I'm investigating on my USB ports so I've disabled on BIOS the USB 2.0 mode and my Zen comes up and knowns to XP SP2 (the same if I leave enabled USB 2 and I plug the Zen through an USB hub). It seems to work: if I drag and drop a file on explorer item of Zen (the one that simply shows all the files in the Zen) it takes a reasonable time to do, quite fast enough. If I click on Zen Micro Explorer and then on playlist or else the explorer hangs... Any help??

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 450 laptop which has a USB ., I plugged my Zen into the USB and a message comes up saying: "The unknown USB Device is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port. There are no HI-SPEED host controllers installed on this computer. Recommendation- The unknown USB Device will function at reduced speed. You must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance." Do you know what is wrong? Do you think it is the cable that is faulty? Thanks so much!

  • I can recharge my Zen Micro VIA USB, but I cant transfer songs....

    Hello,
Using the USB Port on my PC, I can successfully recharge my Zen Micro. But for some reason, I cant transfer music to it. Whenever I go to the "Zen Micro Media Explorer", I always get an explorer error for some reason, and it says "Zen Micro Not Connected"
I try other programs, such as WindowsMedia Player, real player, and NOTMAD Explorer, and they cant connect to the Zen Micro either (player not connected error)
Does anyboy know why? And can anybody please help.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for all the input.
    I've Solved the problem!
I called up Creative Tech Support, and they said to reinstall the software, which I did. Now it works perfectly. Thanks for all the support though. I think Creative's tech support is good, not as bad as people claim it to be.

  • Zen Micro #2 - USB Device Not Recognized / Malfunct

    Hello again, all -
I am now getting the error of "device not recognized" / "device has malfunctioned" when I plug my Zen Micro into my PC (running XP SP2).
This is actually the second Micro that I've had, with the first one returned (through Newegg.com) for exactly the same problem. That first one I actually went as far as wiping off my old OS and re-installing (thinking that I had just hosed up the USB drivers somehow), but I still got the same error.
After replacing the first Micro, I got my new Micro in the mail and it has/had worked beautifully up until today. The only thing I did notice was that it did not seem to like working side-by-side with my Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0, the system apparently confused the two. As soon as I'd plug the player in, the mouse would behave strangely - sporatically moving and then stopping, before just stopping all together. Reverting back to an old PS/2 mouse during times of transfer would solve the problem.
I am now getting exactly the same old malfunctioned/unrecognized error with XP with my Micro. I plug it in, and the "charging" symbol shows up and freezes in the top right corner of the player's screen (it's not flashing as it should be). The player is completely frozen. At the same time, the XP error box pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    Things I've tried:
() Zen Micro disk cleanup - with no effect
    (2) Registry clean up - deleted all instances of my USB mouse, the Zen Micro itself, and all "UNKNOWN" located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00\Enum\USB - with no effect
    (3) Removed / re-installed the Creative Jukebox Driver (with new June 05 version) - with no effect
I am not about to format my PC all over again since this problem is identical to my previous occurrence on my old player, and I believe it will do nothing.
I have no other PC here at home to test this with on another PC, perhaps I will take it into work with me tomorrow.
USB is a truly crappy protocol, but I'm going to have to put most of the blame on Creative here for what I see as probably the worst technical support I've ever experienced. The lack of support for this product is incredible, with voodoo-like "try this, in this order" suggestions that are nothing other than a shot in the dark by them.
Such a shame - this is a great player when it actually works, but it looks like my players from them might be batting 0 for 2. Definitely will think twice about buying their any of their follow-on products, as yet another "next generation" of players is just around the corner.
Any suggestions as to what I should do? It's looking like a hardware (Micro) failure to me, as upon attempting communication with the PC it immediately freezes (while my other devices work beautifully).

Did you try the player on another PC? This will narrow down where the problem is very quickly.

  • ZEN MICRO PHOTO USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNI

help !! i am also having a problem similar to your and just about everyone elses on here. I just purchased a zen microphoto for xmas a month ago and it has been a nightmare . it has worked for about a month perfectly then it ceased to be recognized by? my Alienware area 5 desktop system which previously recognized it fine. I took all of the steps and scanned all of the forums then realized that after uninstalling my windows media player and rolling back to 0 it began to be recognized again. well then surprisingly and maybe not so much so after looking at so many of the post of these forums. Well I have taken so many steps to try to get my ZEN MICRO PHOTO to once again become recognized by my computer? and yet again all efforts have been fruitless. I reformated my ZEN MICROPHOTO?and now when i plug it in a small window pops up at the bottom stating that the USB DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED . I then cannot upload new firmware and can in fact do absolutely nothing but gaze at the player which boots up then fades to black while my pc sees my player as an unknown usb device. I even reformated the pc for the sake of the player , cutting off the nose despite the face in other words and still no dice. I have windows xp service pack 2 , all updates and bios up to date. My pc is only 2 years old and have a lexmark printer? a mouse and a keyboard attched to it , none of which create conflict. Even after reformatting my pc i made sure my player was one of the first peripherial devices connected and all to no avail. I think this is a disgrace that such a compnay as CREATIVE cannot put foward a quality product. Does anyone out there have any solid suggestions on how to fix this proiblem if so they would be gretaly apprecaited. ThanksEdward

vacantmind: You might also want to make sure that you get the latest drivers and software as follows:
. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
    2. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2
    3. Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.9 for Creative MediaSource
Install . then connect the player to the PC. Then install 2. and 3. (the player must be connected for 2. to verify you have a Creative product).
Also an important test is to install the drivers and software on another PC, say a friend's, and see whether you have the problem. If you don't, then the issue is with your PC, or a compatibility issue with the player. If you do, then there's something wrong with the cable or player.

  • Charging Zen Micro by USB Po

I am planning on purchasing a Zen Micro. I am new to mp3 players so this will be my first one. I dont understand how you can charge them through a USB Port. Will someone please explain to me how this works.

The Micro does add a nuance to USB charging however.
As long as the Micro driver is installed on the host PC, charging will occur on any recognized connection (USB. or 2.0 or via a hub).
If there is no driver on that PC, and if the firmware is other than the contentious latest revision, then charging will not occur. Similarily for 3rd party chargers vs the Creative AC adapter.
The AC adapter works in all cases. A 3rd party charger needs to have the new firmware and one of its modes (driverless charging or Lock Charging) ON, and then charging occurs.
In fact it is now my experience that the Lock Charge mode brings about:
    - faster USB charging
    - top up charging that does not require the full 3+ hours
    - seemingly deeper charging as I am getting close to 2 hours playback on high bit rate encodes, volume in the 5 range and SVM on.

  • Zen Micro and USB 1.0 == Errors! (w/ new firmwa

    Hello,
I use my Zen Micro to connect at work and at home. But alas it will not work correctly at work (USB .0), constant lockups and incorrectly reports a full player when it has gigs of space left (after a cleanup).
This is using all 3 transfer options, WMP 0.0, Explorer, and Zen Micro Explorer.
On my home computer (USB 2.0), it works w/o error. No problems whatsoever.
Creative can you please fix this?

. I shutdown my Zen Micro and leave it long enough to shutdown completely (friday -> monday) (until the "quick restart" function times out, and it takes ~5s to start it, whatever that function is called, please make it settable).
This has been a request since the days of the Nomad Jukebox 3, but for whatever reason Creative have never added it to the settings. There's of course a petition at the moment specifically for the Micro to be able to change this, more for the folks that think the battery drain is related to this "standby" mode.
    2. I start it up, and the micro for some reason starts to rebuild the library. It freezes for a few seconds at the end, then half the screen gets random characters and it sends out some buzz sound. Crash. 3. The only way to get it working again is to remove the battery, go into rescue mode, and run "cleanup", restart and let it rebuild the library again. This time it succeeds and everything works.
Shucks, although I've not seen anyone else mention this yet... It would be worth logging it directly with support.

  • Zen Micro firmware/USB p

Please somebody help me. I got no hair left, even after searching the board.
Im getting the USB does not recognise device problem. which in turn leads to the no drivers for this device. all my USB are working fine. I have installed the drivers. I have reinstalled the software after uninstalling it. When i turn the player on it says firmware problem. when it is attached to my laptop it locks and you cannot do anything with it, unless you take the battery out. It works on my friends laptop which is indentical in every way. It has worked fine until now. nothing has changed. just wanted to change the music on it. Im at a loss. Please please help.
Oh yea its also at version 0.0.65 now to.
Im going to explode if this cant be fixed........bang

As far as chipset updates, try the laptop manufacturer's site to see if they have anything obvious in terms of updates. Failing that identify the chipset you have and then go to the chipset manufacturer's site and see if they have updates.
To identify the chipset have a look in Device Manager. As an example, you can see here that the system is using the chipset manufactured by Via (ignore the Micro highlight). Other chipsets can be provided by Intel, nVidia etc. There are quite a few out there.

If WMP is seeing your player this is a good start.
If the other software is not seeing the player it might need updating, or just need the relevant plugin. Assuming you're using the v.xx PDE firmware (goto System > Information on the player to check the firmware version) you should download and install the following:
. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
    2. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2
    3. Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource

  • Zen Micro 4GB - USB Device not recogni

I've always had a hard time trying to get my computer to recognize my mp3 player. I'd have to connect it multiple times in order to get my computer to see it. Now it just doesn't work at all. I've reinstalled the mass-storage device driver a few times, as well as the zen micro drivers that came on the CD and from the site. I've tried with default firmware and I've updated the firmware. None of this works. I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm almost positi've it's not my USB settings as my external hard dri've works fine when I have the mp3 player disconnected. Whenever I connect the player everything messes up and isn't recognized. By itself the player actually freezes and I have to take out the battery for it to reset itself.
    Windows XP
PCI to USB2.0 card (i've tried reinstalling this many times as well).
Any help would be great. Thanks

  • Zen Micro Pcmcia Usb Is

    hello,
I just got my Zen Micro and am having a bit of a problem with it. I have installed all the software on another pc and i know that the player works ok.
I am using a laptop and all the usb ports on it do not work. i have had a look at them before and had friend at a computer shop have a look and he cant help. So i decided to get a pcmcia card with two usb ports on it.
I can use there usb ports no problem. I have used card readers, usb sticks, all ok.
but when it comes to the zen micro i have seom probs.
Usually, my pc does not even recognise the device. It sometimes makes the pc and/or micro stall. All kinds of very odd behaviour. I have managed to transfer about two songs after trying about 20 times.
Do you guys have any ideas?
I think it may be the power to the usb. I was thinking of maybe buying
    a) a new pcmcia card which uses a power adaptor.
    b) a usb hub which uses a power adaptor.
    any ideas?
    thanks for reading
    rob

This sounds like a power issue to me. PCMCIA only has a limited amount of power being deli'vered to it, so it's not liable to be able to power the Micro adequately I don't think.
I think either of your solutions would work, but a USB Hub is liable to slow down your transfer speeds. I would think a new PCMCIA card solution is your best bet.

  • Zen Micro Photo USB & Battery quest

I bought a zen micro when they first came out about 2-3 years ago. Well the dreaded headphone jack issue has finally gotten to me. So I just bought a zen micro photo. Was on sale here for $00 so I figured y not buy it! My question is this:?) the usb cable that comes with the photo is alot shorter than the regualr zen micro. Can I use the regular zen micros usb cable to transfer songs?2) I have 2 batteries for the regular micro. Would those work with the photo??

    Hi,
Yes, they both have the same mini USB connection so the cable is the same type.
As far as the battery goes, it would work, but the Zen Micro battery is not as powerful so the battery life will not be as long.

  • Zen Micro and USB cab

My Zen Micro seems to be very fussy about what USB cables it will work with, to the point that the ONLY cable that it will reliably work with is the one supplied with the unit. Is this normal? There are certainly good and bad quality USB cables, although I've never had a device refuse to use one yet. Does the Micro cable have filter blocks at either end before the plugs?

  • Zen Micro and Usb Charging - I don't want

    Hi all,
i have the Zen micro 5gb with .02.05 firmware.
    My question is :
Is there a way to disable the Usb Charging ?
My question is strange i know... but i really don't want the Usb charging ...
I've tryed to connect open and closed but it charge anyway ...
    please help
Edit: Ops i've putted "Keep this message at the top of the board list" and i don't know if is good .. sorry Message Edited by globalspace on 04-3-2005 0:59 PM

The Dell DJ's dont have this, and were dying to get this option..... Now there are complaints on not to have it's? :S
And like SSR said, it does not affect the battery as the type that is used is one that can be recharged hundreds of times (and by the time the battery is ready to die out your player will die out of your mind as you will most likely have a new one by then).

  • Zen Micro 5GB – USB not connectin

My Zen Micro 5GB MP3 is freezing on the CREATIVE screen.<SPAN> I tried a Clean-Up to no avail.<SPAN> I have downloaded the new Firmware/OS and went to install it but when I initiate the program a message comes up saying it does not recognize a connection to the MP3 player through the USB port.
Up until this point (for six months), I have not had any problems with the USB port connecting.<SPAN> I tried a second USB port on the PC and got the same message.<SPAN> It seems unlikely to me that both USB ports would go out at the same time the MP3 player starts freezing up.
Without the USB port connecting to the MP3 player, the new firmware cannot be downloaded.
    What do I do?

A few days ago I had exactly the same problem. It turned out to be a crashed harddisk and I sent it RMA.

  • Zen Micro's USB damaged?

I tried to plug my Zen Micro to my pc, however it never detects it. I also tried charging it via the AC adapter, and it still won't charge. I removed the battery and did the same, and still it won't turn on. Any suggestions? Is there a possibility to repair this? What am I going to do?

How long have you left the player charging? Leave it at least 4 hours.
If it still won't turn on (you mentioned you'd tried removing the battery) then the player or adapter may be faulty, you can also try charging from the PC to isolate what is at fault.
