Zen Micro Playback Error/exchang

Helloooo
I have had my zen micro (silver but i wanted an orange one but they didnt have orange so w/e) for about 6 months and I have sent it in twice. I just got a replacement back 2 days ago and already its had issues. This morning, my micro was working just fine until i switched from "random play all" to an album song. The song played for 2 seconds, stopped, and a window popped up saying "Playback Error". I went into rescue mode and went to "clean-up" and then "reboot" and tried it again. The song worked! However, fi've minutes later, i recieve the same message! I hit "clean-up" then "reboot" on the rescue menu again but this time my efforts are in vain, for the message is still there. I leave my micro alone for an hour and try again. It works again! But fi've minutes later, it refuses to play anyting. It is reacting like this to all of my songs by the way.
I was wondering if it was a problem i can fix myself. maybe i need to reload my library? I ave the latest firmware so its not that.
Also, is it possible to either get a refund or at least exchange my zen micro for one of a different color?
thanks.

If these songs were working fine before then there's some problem with the player. Run through the troubleshooting section "My Zen is not starting properly, or goes into rescue mode, what should I do?" of the FAQ post, although you've tried some of this already.
Creative won't give refunds for players. You'll have to contact where you bought it.

• Zen Micro 'Playback Error' Mess

i'm currently using the beta firmware 2.0.05 and occasionally while playing back songs, i get the message 'playback error'. although i see this message, the song does play without any apparent errors/problems. does anyone know what this error message means?

i have firmware v. .xxx..... and i get that playback error message too, so i investigated and found out it was only for one song. So i decided to just have my friend send me his version of the song and it worked. so i'm guessing its the song thats messed up even though it will work fine on wmp0 or winamp.. etc.

• Zen Micro Playback er

On certain songs during playback, my Zen Micro stops playing the song and resets back to be beginning of the playlist. It's always the same spot in the song. Also if I fast forward past this spot in the same song I get a "Playback error". The song is mp3 VBR encoded using LAME 3.96 with an average bit rate of around 250 kb
ps.
Winamp, Windows Media Player 0, and Diamond Rio SP250 (CD based player) can all play this file without any problems. My Zen Micro is using firmware version ..0.
Thanks, Steve

Customer service (via email) suggested performing a cleanup, which solved the problem for this one track (bad sectors maybe?).
I have another track that is encoded MP3 CBR at 28 kpbs and it will playback error at the same location. Cleanup didn't fix it. This is scary as CBR is pretty straightforward to decode (doesn't have the buffering issues that VBR has).
Whether it's a PC or handheld player shouldn't matter. As long as it's a valid MP3 encoded file the player should be able to handle it.
I wish I had access to other media players (iPod, etc) to see how they handle the suspect track.

• FIX: Zen Micro Installer Error - "DemoShield Player has encountered an error.

I just thought I'd post a solution to a problem I was having with the Zen Micro Explorer software installation because it might help someone else. Also, this forum is well indexed by search engines so it will be easy for people to find. It took me well over an hour to track this down.
After starting the Zen Micro Explorer Installer CD, a full screen splash is shown of the creative logo and then DemoShield is started for the software install. It shows an intro screen where you must click 'Next,' on clicking next the DemoShield program was crashing with the generic Windows error "DemoShield encountered an error..." The problem appears to be a software conflict between DemoShield and Apple's QuickTime (any version as far as I know). Disabling the QuickTime startup entry does not help, installing in Safe Mode does not help and exiting any instance of QT in the system tray does not help either.
To fix the problem you must un-install the QuickTime software from your computer by going through the Add/Remove Programs screen in the Control Panel. Once un-installed, run the Creative installer CD again, this time it will run correctly. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the install.
<i>Please note that if you have installed iTunes on your system it will not run while QuickTime is uninstalled, this is normal. Re-installation of QuickTime is covered later in this post.</i>
When you have completed the install and restarted your computer you can re-install QuickTime. At the time of writing (4th Sept 2005) QuickTime and iTunes are bundled in one download package so you must download both. You can <a href='http://www.apple.com/QuickTime/download/' target=_blank>get the bundle here. Let it download and run the installer. If you already have iTunes installed, the installer will 'Repair' your installation, detecting that QT is missing it will re-install. If you do not have iTunes the installer will installer iTunes and QuickTime.
When you have completed the QuickTime+iTunes install you have got around the DemoShield issue. I hope this of use to anybody with a similar problem.Message Edited by PhilM on 09-5-2005 02:30 AM

Hi Jeremy,
I knew it was an issue with QuickTime because I clicked on 'Send Error Report' on the error message and it took me to <a href='http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=0b73e24-7433-4ee-ac4c-49956d08c85c&SID=623' target=_blank>this page. It states "An analyst at Microsoft has investigated this problem and determined that an unknown error occurred in QuickTime Player. This software was created by Apple Computer, Inc.."
My QuickTime version is 7.0.2. My operating system is WIndows XP Home (Athlon 64; 52Mb RAM)
Eventually I just tried uninstalling QuickTime and it wroked after I did that. Some screenshots: <a href='http://www.phantomphil.co.uk/ZM/' target=_blank>Click
The contents of my disk.id file reads:
Creative Zen Micro
ZENM-CDSD-W-LB
Hope this hel

• ZEN MICRO PLAYBACK PROB

I have some mp3 files of uni'versity lectures. They were recorded/ encoded? at
6 kb
ps.
When I try to play them on the Zen Micro they play too slow, like an LP playing at the wrong speed.
They sound fine on WMP0 or Real Player. I have also played these files on 3 other mp3 players and they sound fine on them. Any ideas?

You'll need to reencode them at a supported rate. I have a suspicion it's the bit-rate being too low, but also check the sampling frequency.

• Zen Micro Playlist Error - Please H

Everything for my zen micro when connected to my computer except for one thing. I can't create a playlist on my computer! Everytime I go into the Zen Media Explorer and try to create a new playlist, it tells me that it is "unable to connect to device. please try again." And yes, my Zen Micro is connected when I try this.
Anyways, I looked up to see if anybody had this issue but didn't find a thread about it. Can anybody help me out? I've only upgraded the software once... and terrible things happened(my computer stopped recognizing my micro) so I don't plan on doing that again unless that's my last resort. Thanks in advance.

I think you need to try the normal troubleshooting procedures i.e. a disk cleanup (see the FAQ post).
Also try using MediaSource, and failing that another PC even (just to test).

I was pissed whan my zen micro started to "overheat" (WTF!!! ) and shutdown every time I turned it on, i tryed everything (that wont erase all of my songs) and it still wont turn on. also sometimes it wont charge fully and i was wondering if that might have any thing to do with it. if anyone has a salution to my problem please respond to this. I NEED MY MUSIC BACK!!!!!!!!!

Hello here. I had this problem with my first Zen Micro. I exchanged this one for another one, which in turn worked fine. Unfortunately, I had to start again with putting the music on, although in my case because the problem started after a couple of days, I hadn't copied that much. I tried the rescue mode thing, but nothing seemed to resolve the problem. Not good news I know, sorry!!

• IBM T30 XP USB error with Zen Micro. Does not recognize dev

I've tried everything I can think of on this board and others. Zen Micro, IBM T30 laptop, 2 usb ports on back, Windows XP. Downloaded latest everything I can find. USB does not recognize device. Error report shows "USB Root Hub (2 ports) ---> Unknown Device"
Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Tried one last thing, just for grins...
Put the IBM into it's docking station, which has another USB on the dock (low speed, though), and voila! It worked! Go figure what's different but since it was working, I took that opportunity to blow in the new firmware, and also upgraded to ZenMicroP4S_PCFW_LB_2__02 to get away from drivers all together (and to use Napster2go, my ultimate goal through all of this!) Syncing with MP0 worked great. Even an explorer view with folders and such, so all is well.
Since everything seems to be working, I'll stick with it for now!
Can I now delete Zen Micro Media Explorer from my system? (it doesn't seem to recognize the device anyway)
Thanks!

• Zen Micro - MTP playback control functional

I want to buy a zen micro v2 which supports MTP.
I know that the v2 version of Zen Micro is MTP enabled player.
Microsoft has released MTP specification 0.83, which does not have playback control functionality. Mocrosoft has said that it will release the specification for this playback control in one or two months of time. But they have released an intermediate version of this MTP which has this playback control functionality.
A scenario to understand my question:
When you connect Zen Micro to a car stereo system, you can not control its playback functionality from the car stereo's head unit. To be more specific you can not issue Play/Pause/Stop/Volume increase/Volume decrease commands from the car stereo's head unit.
So please tell whether zen micro has this support? If not will it be providing this functionality in the coming months?
please suggest me any other Zen palyers which has this functionality.
Thanks in advance,
Regards.

DM, the Micro's remote control works exactly as you suggested; it's an inline remote that plugs into the headphone jack, and the headphones plug into the remote.
Unfortunately, I think the problem is more along the lines of car audio manufacturers' willingness to design a physical interface between a car stereo and the Micro than anything in the MTP spec. Microsoft can enable this kind of control in the MTP spec all it wants to, but until manufacturers are willing to use physical interfaces other than the iPod dock connector, it's all for naught.

• Creative Zen Micro : Error w Playl

I'm having problems with transferring an entire imported playlist into my zen micro.
I've recently updated both my firmware and MediaSource to the latest version. Loaded MediaSource up and imported a playlist that i created using winamp. Then I clicked and dropped the playlist into my zen micro and a new window pops up showing the progress of the songs transferring into it. But while transferring, many of the files had Error under the Progress. Note that I am able to listen to the songs in winamp, but am unable to listen to the "Error songs" in MediaSource. Attached is a screenshot of what happened.
[img"]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/milo_dinosaur/error.jpg">
I've tried to create a new playlist in MediaSource, and imported the songs. But it also did not work.
Also, I found out that under My Playlists in my Zen Micro, there are many playlists named Creative Zen Micro, while the one that I've highlighted was the only one that I've created.
[img"]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/milo_dinosaur/huh.jpg">
Went into rescue mode, reformatted the zen micro and even did a clean up. Nothing worked.
So, can anyone help me see what's wrong? Hopefully someone here can help before I email the Customer Service team again.
Thanks in advance. =)Message Edited by milo_dinosaur on 0-9-2005 :54 AM

Yes I'm currently using 3.30.2
I've finally found the problem. My computer currently has 2 user profiles, the first one is 'Owner' and it's the directory I've saved my mp3 files at. Second one is called 'pokey' (just a nickname, don't ask why! :P) which I frequently use. So, my playlist called 'blabla.m3u' was saved under pokey, which is C:\Documents and Settings\pokey\My Documents\blabla.m3u.
I opened up my playlist using notepad and saw that it's file path was
"\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\Apocalyptica - Bittersweet.mp3"
So, MediaSource would just tag the filepath of that song as
"C:\Documents and Settings\pokey\My Documents\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\Apocalyptica - Bittersweet.mp3"
That was where it went wrong.
Now, I save my playlists under the 'Owner' profile, and it works fine. file path shows up as
"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Music\Apocalyptica - Bittersweet.mp3"
which is exactly where I placed the files.
So now everything works fine. The thing is that I have to save the playlist in the same profile as where the mp3s are located at.
The error actually existed because MediaSource couldn't find the file at the designated filepath. I guess it was an error on my part.
Anyway, thanks for the quick reply! It's really very much appreciated.Message Edited by milo_dinosaur on 0-9-2005 0:24 PM

• Zen Micro PlaysForSure firmware upgrade fatal error - RESOL

First, sorry about poor english!
When i tried to upgrade my Zen Micro to the latest firmware i got the following message: "Creative Zen Micro PlaysForSure Firmware Upgrade: This application only supports Windows XP platform with at least Service Pack installed." The executable name was: ZenMicroP4S_PCFW_L6_2_2_02.exe and yes i have Windows XP SP2 installed on my computer. Dear Creative!
You screwed the upgrade program a bit, because it is works ONLY IN ENGLISH version on Windows XP. Shame! You are pushing me into the sea of warez...

• Zen Micro - slower playback at low bitra

While trying to listen to 32kbs mp3s on my Zen micro I encountered a very strange problem - it plays at about half speed.
The above mentioned mp3s are fine otherwise, winamp, etc. can play them at a correct speed. I installed the latest available firmware, etc. to the Micro (with autoupdate), but problem stays the same...
Help me pls!
Thanks
Dav
PS. don't ask me why Iam trying to play 32kbs mp3s - sample soundbytes from online record store... so if u can't help, I can't buy more records ever.

Sample rate is ,025 kHz... pretty common, no?
In general specifications I found Micro plays mp3s "up to 320kbs" - not limited from the lower end.
I just find it strange that a $200 gadget cannot do what an old-old version of winamp (or any other mp3 player softvware) can do (namely to playback low-quality mp3s).
In earlier threads I've read that resampling (recoding perhaps?) would do the trick - in my case it would mean resampling 00-50 (small) files per week. I'd rather bring my laptop with me...
Thanks for the answer, anyhow.
