Zen Micro Random Algorithm. What is

I think the biggest thing with this mp3 player you need is patience. I think everyone's had something go wrong, and few have had it work flawlessly on the first time. That said;
What is the deal with the DJ- Random Play all function. My micro seems to switch between Guster and Dave Matthews Band and then barley sample other songs (granted they're both amazing ). So my question is in two parts. How does random work? Is it by indvidual file, or by album or Artist. Also, I'd love to, for my own amusment, to see the algorithm that the micro uses to choose a "random" track.
-tim

Someone linked with the development team posted a while back on the Nomadness.net forums that the random seed was generated from the clock (which is quite common in this type of device). I'm guessing that the seed is still not very varied, hence you can get some repetition of artists, although this might be down to some coincidence.
The only way I found of getting a truly random queue was to use Notmad's playlist randomise function.

  • Zen Micro Randomly stopped working today. Is stuck on recovery mode

I changed nothing with my computer nothing with the zen. I just turned it on today to listen to it, and it brought me right to the recovery screen after forever of being on the creative screen. It is still recognized by my computer, but everytime I try to reload the firmware off of the creative website, it either freezes or fails. When I try to do a disk clean on it, it does nothing.
    What do I do?

That sounds like the hardri've has died. You can replace the dri've with a CF card & have a larger dri've.8,6,or 32GB if you want. Here is the link to show you how to do it (very easy) I have done many of these. http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...d=33&cid=9&pg= This is the card that I know for sure works comes in 4,8,6,&32GB the best size for the money is the 6GB http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=0335398464

  • Zen Micro . . . what's going

I was just wondering when the new firmware will be available? What it will include and so on. Like, just general info on it. Tips and Tricks, stuff you find cool about it. The cases, where to get them in the UK, preferably a physical shop. Or any other accessories that I could get. Any advice for the player?
    Thanks,

  • Zen Micro random play

...it ain't that random really is it! I quite often get tracks from the same artist playing consecuti'vely, and occasionally the same tracks pretty close to each other.
Any chance we could have a little more random in the next firmware release please?

One workaround for this is to create a playlist and use Notmad's randomise feature to mix it up a little.
Unfortunately the players haven't been that random as far back as the Nomad Jukebox , so I wouldn't hold your breath for an update on this...

  • Help with my Bran-New Creative Zen Micro Photo. [Questi

<EM>If you don't want to see the backing of my whole story skip to the bold print at the bottom!</EM>I also want you to know I read the FAQs and searched through some topics like this, but haven't found any asking my question.First of all, I'm new to the forum, but I've been researching Creative's Zen for a long time now. I kept observing each one closely before I purchased a product. I then saw the Zen Micro Photo come out. This one won my attention. I loved this, I quickly searched for reviews and went for the buy for Christmas. I told my dad about it and he was "iffy" on the price, but it was better then the iPod in my opinion.Christmas day came and I opened it. Right away I checked everything out I knew a lot about the menu already and all, but not really how to control it. I checked to make sure everything worked. All systems were go. After listening to the defaults (which I loved) I went to go install the software. I already had Media Player 0 and Adobe, oh and I didn't want the freakin AOL toolbar! Lol, so I installed everything else. It took forever, but I hooked it up and I installed the drivers, but as soon as I plug in the USB connector I see: "A HIGH-SPEED USB device has been plugged into a LOW SPEED USB port. After that, I switched USB ports, btu I got same message. I hit the X and then tried to charge. I got the Lightening Bolt, but no dimming of lights. I found out that this computer is not letting me install any service packs, I'm confused about that.My question:Is there anyway I can charge this mp3 player and download music onto my Zen Micro Photo without Service Pack ? Or did I just pay $250 for a really cool glowing mp3 player to be used as a paperweight? (I love this Zen and I ran the battery dead hoping that would make the charging easier).Help?
    My Specifications:
My Mp3 Player: Zen Micro Photo (Black)What I tried: Switching USB ports and re-installing Service Pack Software: Not sure how to determine firmware without installing something. I'm on a XP Professional and I'm using the Creative Media Source and Creative Media Toolbox

Thank you DM for responding. I am expecting problems, but it still won't allow me to charge the Zen Micro Photo or even use the Creative Media Source. I can't upload any songs or any contacts on it. I haven't uploaded anything yet, but it's not reading the USB device. When I run Creative Zen Micro Photo Media Explorer I get this message at the top of the screen: "The device is not connected. Please connect your Zen MicroPhoto to the computer. I can't organize anything or add songs... so it just makes all the programs I downloaded useless and my Creative product unusuable.ONe thing it does do though... whenever I plug in my Zen MIcroPhoto to the USB it turns it on and glows, but only shows my battery at the top with one red line and the green lightening bolt filling the battery up.After leaving it like this for two hours the green moves, but the red bar stays the same size.

  • Zen Micro: My comp won't install driv

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I just recently bought a Zen Micro, and during the installation, Right when it was about to finish, I got an error message that read like "There was an error installing the drivers". Everything seemed to be installed right, and everything worked, but when I connected the Micro to my computer through USB, my computer recognized that the Micro was there, but when I tried using the Zen Media Explorer, it said that my Micro was not connected. I tried calling customer support and they told me to uninstall and reinstall, same problem. They also said it might be my anti-virus software, so I uninstalled that, same problem. I even went to download the driver from nomadness.com, and those drivers won't install either. Does anyone know what I can do to get my drivers to install?

just got a zen micro and guess what i am having the same problem, running on widows ME, went through the installation procedure. get a big red x that says windows cannot find driver, tired to reinstall the drivers both from the cd and from the usbman.com site, all end up in the same place, reinstalling drivers is not just happening. the systems subolder shows a yello question mark under zen creative.
    a hint or two:
. i had the same problem with my Rave mp3 player and the service support fellow asked me to download the files from usbman.com, still didnot work. returned the **bleep** thing.
now i have the zen and guess what, it is doing the same thing, wonder if it is windows me?
    2. when i restart the computer is get the following message (this is new for today)
windows could not upgrade file % etc. etc. this error happened on the restart after installation.

  • Zen Micro Playlist Direct

Can anyone tell me what the Playlist Directory is for on the Zen Micro? I have created several playlists with the Zen Explorer and can see those lists using the Zen Explorer. However, nothing is in the Zen Micro's Playlist directory? What is this directory and how do you use it's
    Tony

Your issue is very confusing. I think what SSR is trying to say is that "Is your playlist shown in the playlist menu in the Zen Micro?"
And what you are trying to say is "Can I view the playlist on my Windows Explorer?"
You have to use Zen Micro Media Explorer to view your playlist or you can use Creative Mediasource. There is no directory that shows the playlist in Windows Explorer or on your computer. The Zen Micro doesn't act as hard dri've like how iRi'ver does. In the iRi'ver you have to configure everything on the iRi'ver or you can use WMP0.
You can also use WMP0, but I haven't tried making a playlist with WMP0 yet.

  • My Zen Micro is *FLAW

    Hi there-
I got a pink Zen Micro for my birthday less than a year ago (still under warranty). I had to send it back to Creative for them to fix it because it would not turn on and frequently froze for no reason. I was always very careful with it (as I am with all of my electronic things). So, I sent it, and they "fixed" it, but recently it has begun to do the same thing. I got the device off of WalMart.com and Wal-Mart said I cannot return it. I think it would be very unfair for Creative to send me a defecti've product and not allow me to get my money back. Will creative refund my purchase if it is still under warranty, and if it is a defecti've product?
    Thank you!
    Whitney

I had the same problem with my zen micro and heres what i did when it froze.
    ) remove the battery
    2) once the player is shut off, plug it into the wall charger. <EM>(without the battery in it)</EM>
    3) turn on the player and wait for it to completely boot up
    4) once its booted up, put the battery in
    5) after you put the battery in, unplug the zen micro from the wall charger
    6) now it should be fine
Its strange, my zen micro did this for the first 2-3 mounths i had it, but now it doesn't do it anymore

  • Zen Micro, WHAT A SH

6 months in this thing randomly just gets a hardware problem, and i hadn't used it for a while, so its not like I dropped it. Just randomly this thing says it doesn't feel like working. I lost my recipt in a move, so now all is lost. I don't want to pay for a repair, when I can just buy something else that won't die like Creative's stupid stuff does. The worst part is that you guys make it so darn difficult to get it fixed. You guys owe me an Ipod. I'd rather not have the hassel of e-mailing you guys and all that jazz, paying for it to be sent, and then paying for the repair. So silly, this place is not customer geared at all. I wish I knew this before I spent my hard earned money on the player. Oh and Itunes is a way better program aswell.

Could you send me a link because I just dont see it. And I have the 2x version of Zen Micro Media and so far the categories are
    Import to Music
    Rip Audio Tracks to Device
    Organize Music in Device
Create a New Playlists in Device
Sync Music and Outlook Data between PC and Device
    Manage Organizer Data in Device
Transfer Data between PC and Device
I don't know if anyone can help me, but so far I've went to "Import to Music". It docks up, but makes no transfer. I'm not sure if I should've went into any of the categories first before going straight to "Import to Music" or if I just clearly need that Mediasource thing. Because I feel like there's a way of importing music on the 2x version without downloading any Mediasource. Anyone with the 2x firmware help. Also I was told to only use the 2x firmware with WMP0, but if that's the case then whats the point of the Zen Micro Media Player and all the categories listed above that comes with it. None of the categories seem to work. Once again, If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it. Because I don't know if there's something I just didn't do.

  • Zen Micro Photo Randomly Shutting Down

&Zen Micro Photo Randomly Shutting DownU Hello there,
I have a Zen microphoto which I ahve had for about 3 years now and the only problem i ahve ahd before was a software issue that was fixed easily. Now I will turn my player on and it will randomly shut off and reset all of my settings. It most commonly happens when I move it from a desk to my pocket. And sometimes when i boot it up it will be in recovery mode, sometimes not. Other times it will boot and there will be random colored pixels on the screen. I really need some help cause i dont want? to but a new Mp3 player.
Oh and i have reformatted and reloaded the firmware twice already.
    Can anyone help me?

    Information on LiON battery lifespans.
<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">A lithium-ion battery provides 300-500 discharge/charge cycles. The battery prefers a partial rather than a full discharge. Frequent full discharges should be avoided when possible. Instead, charge the battery more often or use a larger battery. There is no concern of memory when applying unscheduled charges.
Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate. (Read more in 'Choosing the right battery for portable computing', Part Two.)
Aging of lithium-ion is an issue that is often ignored. A lithium-ion battery in use typically lasts between 2-3 years. The capacity loss manifests itself in increased internal resistance caused by oxidation. Eventually, the cell resistance reaches a point where the pack can no longer deli'ver the stored energy although the battery may still have ample charge

  • Creative MediaSource won't recognize my Zen Micro all of the sudden!! What is going o

When I first began using my Zen Micro, Creative MediaSource worked fine. I could start my player and it recognized it right away. Then I was told I had to update my firmware and download an update to MediaSource. I did both but shortly thereafter I started having problems! Primarily, when i plug in my Micro a window pops up where I have 3 options, none of which are Creative MediaSource. The window has "MTP Media Player" across the top bar, but i havn't a clue what the "MTP" stands for. The 3 options given are "Sync your music using Napster", "Synchronize media files to this device using Windows Media Player", and "Take no action". I initialy tried "Take no action" and then opened MediaSource only to find it didn't recognize my Micro any more. I then e-mailed Creative for help and got a reply telling me to.............
Thank you for contacting Creative Technical Support.
In regards to your issue, you can try uninstall and reinstall
    MEdiaSource with these procedures.
. Click START -> RUN -> type MSCONFIG and click OK.
    2. Click SELECTIVE STARTUP and then uncheck LOAD STARTUP GROUP ITEMS.
    3. Apply the changes and reboot the computer when prompted.
    4. Uninstall MediaSource from the system using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
    5. Manually delete the MediaSource folders from the computer system :
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTCDDB
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIA MANAGER
    C:\MEDIA\MUSIC
    6. Right-click your My Computer icon and click Properties.
    7. Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.
    8. Remove any listings for Creative NOMAD products in the Device
    Manager
(they will most likely be located in the Uni'versal Serial Bus
    Controllers category).
    9. If you have a category call Other Devices, look for listings in
    there
called USB Device. If you have any, remove them.
    0. Install MediaSource only from the original installation CD.
NOTE: DO NOT OPEN MEDIASOURCE WHILE PERFORMING THESE PROCEDURES.
Also, you can try reloading the Zen Micro's firmware through recovery
    mode.
Move and hold the Power button to the Power On position and re-insert
the battery to the Zen Micro. Hold the Power button until the rescue
    mode appears.
Clean Up: Performs a disk scan on the players hard disk
Format: Formats the players hard disk All contents will be lost
Reload OS: Reloads the Operating System on the Jukebox. Do not select
this option unless you have downloaded the firmware. Reloading your OS
will not effect the contents of the files stored on your Jukebox Zen
    Reboot: Reboots the device
Please attempt the options 'Reboot' and 'Clean Up' first. If they do
    not
help, you must try 'Reload OS'. To do this, you must have a downloaded
firmware from our website ready. Please let us know the results after
these steps, as soon as possible.
For faster service please reply with previous correspondence when
    replying to this email.

    "Get Creative"
I followed the directions, but 3 of the folders listed in step 5 didn?t exist (only C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE did), there were no Creative NOMAD products listed as in step 8, and there was no ?Other Devices? as stated in step 9. I did everything else for all the steps through step 0.
I then re-installed Creative MediaSource from the CD only to find it still didn?t recognize my player! I?ve now done this twice with the same results!
Zen Micro Media Explorer doesn?t even recognize my Micro when it'ss plugged in! It just keeps saying ?The device is not connected. Please connect your Zen Micro to the computer?.
I?m hardly a tech expert, but it seems to me that something on my PC is detecting my player and decieding for itself that the only 2 programs it will let manage my Zen Micro are Napster and Windows Media Player. If this is the case where do I go from here?!?!

    LakeTahoeGuy,
Just as SSR mention, if you're using v2.xx.xx (MTP) firmware then you will need to get the correct version of Media Explorer that support this firmware and also install the MTP plugin for MediaSource. Both the software and plugin are available from the site SSR mention.

  • When you order your Zen Micro, make sure you know what you're getti

I recently about a 5gb Zen Micro Mp3 player and went through a lot of trouble to get it, but I learned a lot. Read on:
First, there are two types of packaging for Zen Micros, one that includes only the player, the cords, the manual, the software, a pouch and the battery, and another that also has a case with stand and belt clip attachments. Most of the retailers are selling both for the same price and many of them have them both in stock at the same time. The boxes are two different sizes and the larger one (almost 0'by 7') has the case and attachments. Get your money's worth and ask what's the box.
Second, NEVER NEVER NEVER buy from a company in British Columbia, Canada called Can Computer (www.cancomputer.com). It is BY FAR the WORST retailer I've EVER come into contact with!
I ordered from this company after doing a little bit of research and they seemed like a decent company. I was WRONG. I ordered my player. A day later they called me to tell me that the colour I wanted was sold out but hadn't been posted on the website, so I picked a new colour. The company only ships by reg mail so after a week of waiting, I got my mp3 player in the mail.
Now, when you buy the player from a decent retailer, as I did afterwards from The Source by Circuit City, the box is rapped in plastic and the inside box is taped. Everything in the box is packaged and sealed including the battery and the software. Everything is neatly placed in the box and the player is untouched and is protected by plastic stri
    ps.
The battery is outside the player. This is the way they should all be according to Creative Labs and all the other retailers I've spoken to.
When I received my supposedly "new" player from Can Computer, there was no outside plastic, the seal on the inside of the box was broken. The outside AND inside was covered in dirt. The inside contents looked like they had been dumped out onto a dirty floor and thrown back in again. Everything was opened, including the software. The battery was already inside the player and it was covered in dirt. When I took it out of the player, there was a piece of tape (the kind of scotch tape you get on a roll) holding the top of the battery together and the casing was warped. My manual was mangled. On top of that, there were parts missing from my box. I received the box that should have included the casing and the attachments. Neither were there. Also missing were my warranty cards and the casing to the manual. The cords that I receieved were not creative merchandise. As you can imagine, I wasn't very happy.
When I called the company, the Sales Manager was incredibly rude to me. He refused to apologise and seemed to make every effort to deter me from getting refund. He tried to tell me that it was normal for the player to arri've that way and that tape on the battery was something that was normal. He also said he would only refund my shipping costs to send it back to him if he saw it and believed that I was telling the truth. He was so rude that when I explained to him what happened, he had the nerve to say, "So, what do you want me to do about it's". To prove my point, I called the retailers around my city and asked them what the box, battery and player should look like. I also called Creative. All of them said that what I got from Can Computer was abnormal. It was only then, when I proved that they'd sent me used and defecti've products and demanded that I be given a full refund, that the Sales Manager of Can Computer agree with me.
This is the worst company I've ever dealt with. DO NOT buy ANYTHING from this company!!!
Do your research and if you can buy one from a retailer in your area, do so. It's worth it. Futureshop will match any internet retailer's price, and The Source gives over the counter replacement.
