Zen Micro - recovery mode hang

My Zen Micro do not start. I have tried to use Recovery mode, but it doesn't work. Clean up, Format, Reload firmware and Reboot - they all hang up. It says for example "formatting" on the diplay until for a very long time. Nothing happens. And the PC does not recognize the mp3-player. What can I do?

Sounds like you have a bad hardi've. If not under warranty you can replace it yourself. Not real difficult. Here are instructions to open? http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...d=33&cid=9&pg=& here is what you replace dri've with. ? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...em=N82E6820270? I have done this to a couple of my player so i know this card works. ?Message Edited by coachop94 on 0-2-2008 03:7 PM

I have had some unfortunate experience with ZEN MICRO recovery mode. I want to suggest to creative that they provide more user feed back on the device after each phase of recover mode, clean up ..it should tell you when you've completed the task. Formatting should tell you when it's reformatted, but before that should tell you how long to expect with a full device so we can know how long the process should take. My experience was it hung..or did it's I don't know. If it hangs, what should we do? When they say make sure you have the firmware available to reload, they should be more specific. I find the website does not really fill you in all the way and expect everyone to know how to reload their software via USB connections. Also, there was a lot of confusion when to have the battery in the device and when not to. I had a hard time, when only conncected via USB and without battery in. The device would not go to recovery mode.
This is the third Creative Zen Micro for me. The first one failed after 0 months, they sent me a refurbished one and it did not work. They finally sent me a new one 3 months ago and it just crashed on me a couple of weeks ago. Now I have to go through the laborous effort of getting a Return Authorization (if they'll even do that now). I am at wits end and clearly frustrated. If they device stunk, I would move on, but I really do like the hardware design and wished that Creative would get the software right and maybe ruggedize the software / hardware experience
    Zenpatient needs Zen Dr.

I agree that a little more documentation would be helpful. I think I, or someone (I forget), started a petition to get reload OS renamed to delete OS (a better representation of what it does).
I have tried in the FAQ though to detail how long each of these functions should take.

  • Micro Recovery Mode Probl

My Zen Micro crashed a bunch of times and eventually decided not to start up at all. I just get a screen saying "Creative" and that's it. I downloaded new firmware but when i connect the player to the computer it doesn't recognize it. Right now I'm running "Clean Up" in the recovery screen but it seems to have crashed again. Is there supposed to be a status bar saying how much longer it should take/how much percent it had scanned? Does anyone have a ball park figure of how long it should take?

A disk cleanup should take no longer than 30 minutes for a full player (and most likely a lot less).
If Rescue Mode functions aren't working the player is faulty unfortunately.

  • Zen Micro recovery scr

I've had my Micro for about 5 months and love it, but it as of today it won't exit the recovery mode screen. I've selected the cleanup option, then rebooted the player, but the recovery screen keeps coming up. Also, when I try to organize my music on my computer, my Micro library won't load. Help!!!

If the player won't boot normally it won't be able to communicate with the PC.
See the section "My Zen is not behaving properly, and/or won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" in the FAQ post and if this doesn't help contact support via the Support > Contact Customer Support link on this page

  • Zen 4GB - Recovery Mode doesn't w

Hello, I've bought a Creative Zen 4GB for several months, and I've the following problem : the player doesn't turn on when sliding on the "ON" position (0 light, 0 sign of work). When I plug it (front or back), it runs correctly, but i can't delete/move/add files to the player : for example I chose to delete : I go on "browse media files", select the file I want to delete, I clic on delete, a window appears as every file deleted, but when it closes, the file is still here..
Moreover, I tried to use the recovery mode, but the player doesn't start, even with this method :
Recovery Mode Using The Paper Clip
    OR
Alternati've Method For Recovery Mode Without The Paper Clip.
    Why use it's
If you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
    1. The player is not detected in Creative MediaSource or Windows Media Player
    2. The battery does not last as expected
3 Your computer stops responding during file transfers
4 There is a power outage during file transfers
5 There is an error about firmware
    6. LCD displays a "Firmware Problem" message
    7. Your player is not responding.
    8. The player is performing erratically.
Save a copy of your player's content, if possible, before cleaning up the memory!
Recovery Mode Using The Paper Clip Reset Method
1#. Turn off player if not already turned off
#2. Press/hold play/pause button. If you accidentally release
the button, start this reset procedure over again.
#3. Gently push the end of a metal paper clip into the reset hole on
the botton edge below the play/pause switch.
(Do not use the slotted mic hole at the top edge near the earphone jack)
#4. Slide the on/off/lock switch towards the on position - slide it to the botton hold
until the display lights up and then release.
#5. The recovery mode screen appears and four menu items are shown - see below
    Please help !

Down further on the page is this:
How can you tell if your Zen is defecti've/faulty?
    1. A "white screen" or a "totally blank black screen" shows up on the Zen LCD.
    2. You cannot force the Zen into the special "Recovery Mode" menu screen. <---------------------- Your problem
    3. The Zen refuses to "take a charge"? (To charge up the internal Lithium-Ion Polymer battery)
    4. The Zen LCD is cracked or distorted due to dropping or handling abuse.
    5. The Zen clock does not keep accurate time (within 2 mins max per month)
Contact Creative if any of the above faults occur - the Zen is bad and nothing you can do will fix it!

  • Problems with upgrading firmware in Zen Micro 4

I am currently having a problem with upgrading the firmware on my Zen Micro 4 GB. The Zen Micro seems to hang right after the first reboot, therefore not finishing the whole upgrade. I am currently trying to upgrade to 2.2.02. It seems that whenever I try to reboot the Zen Micro while it is connected via USB, it hangs at the Creative Logo and I have to end up resetting the system. Oddly enough, I have a second Zen Micro that I was able to upgrade the firmware with no problems whatsoever. Any suggestions?
P.S. I do have Windows XP SP2 with WMP 0 installedMessage Edited by Hubmasterflex on 0-07-2006 04:23 AM

Try using reload OS in the recovery mode to erase the current firmware, then connect to the PC and reload. You take a risk doing this though as if the firmware won't reload from the PC you'll be left with an effecti'vely useless player, and you'll have to contact support to get a replacement.

  • Zen Micro problem - Cras

I turned my Zen Micro off and it hung on the shutting down screen.
I removed the battery and re seated it and now it just brings up the creative logo and non of the buttons work.
I have rebooted the Zen in recovery mode to no avail. I am now performing a clean up on it and it is saying, scan disk ... it has been on this screen for 40 mins now and i don't know whether it has crashed or is still processing something.
    I have a Zen Micro 5GB
I got it on Friday and it has crashed already
Does anyone know how long this scan disk will take and what steps to take next if it doesn't work.
I haven't flashed the firmware yet to the newest version
Any help would be much appreciated
    Matt

Exact same symptoms to my crashed Micro as well. It was a month old and had not played more than 30 hours total. It crashed while playing normally and never recovered. Now, it is never switching off when there is a battery in and either there is a permanent Creative logo on the screen, or if it is in Recovery Mode, it freezes after selecting any of the available options from the menu.
I think that 40 minutes of a frozen Creative logo on the screen or alternati'vely 40 minutes of a frozen Scan Disk... or Formatting... or whatever window clearly mean a permanent crash. Moreover, a slight mechanical spinning sound is heard from inside for a few seconds after the battery is inserted and then even the sound sto
    ps.
Hard disk failure? Stuck hard disk heads? Who knows? The fact remains that the Micro has crashed.
Just a note about the battery as it seems a big issue for many in this forum. The Micro had been updated with the latest 2.00.2 MTP firmware and had some 2.4GB of songs. After the first couple of full charges through an electricity outlet (and not a USB port), the battery deli'vered some 8 hours of continuous random playing of some 450 92 Kbps MP3 songs with EQ on and volume around 2 to 5. In standby mode it lasted some 4-5 days with a total of around 5-6 hours of playing. Not bad at all, but you definitely need an extra battery if you do not want to be charging it like a mobile telephone.
Now I am waiting for a reply from Creative Technical Support to see the service/repair possibilities. I hope they answer in the 3-5 working days as the auto-response said.

  • Zen Micro and Vista? - Sol

I am trying to get my Zen Micro (DAP-MD0004) to work with Vista to no avail. It is loaded with the latest firmware (PlaysForSure - I dont think so!!!) and Vista picks it up and installs the driver no problem. However, if I try to view music through My Computer it doesnt show anything. Windows Media Player doesnt work either because its WMP. The sync windows just keeps saying to connect a device. I have installed Creative MediaSource 5 Organizer with plugin and even though it picks up my Zen, when I try to view my music it doesnt respond and I have to kill it.Has anybody got any advice for me I have already searched the forums for Zen Micro and Vista and I have found nothing to help me. Is Creative looking into the problem of people not being able to put music onto their devices

I have finally got it to work. Here is what I did for anyone that is having the same problem:
Boot the Zen to Recovery Mode (Remove battery, hold switch in on position, and insert battery)
    Run a Clean Up
    Run a Format
    Reboot
Install Creative MediaSource 5 Organizer with PlaysForSure Plugin
Connect Zen Micro to computer and run MediaSource
You should now be able to copy music from your computer to your Zen.
I am disappointed that I couldn't copy my music off the device first but hey-ho.
I am also disappointed that the latest version of MediaSource requires you to purchase a pack to convert music to MP3.
It never fails to amaze me what businesses will do to try and get more money from us consumers.

zen micro frozen in recovery mode and i downloaded new firmware on to my pc
but it wont even open im at a loss at what to do any help much appriceated

Have you tried to reset it using a pin of some sort? Or something sharp? Or try taking the battery out and put it back if it doens't have a reset button. It'll do the same thing
    WHAT TO DO AFTER:
I did have a problem like this though, and it seems to be common when in Recovery Mode.
Before connecting to USB, first open the firmware update (Don't connect it before hand). When it says to connect, do so, but not before, and then select Update.

I just purchased a white zen micro photo last week. As I was putting music onto my ZMP, my computer ( Dell Windows XP ) froze. I disconnected my player and when I went to turn on my ZMP, I found out that it went into Recovery Mode. I tried all the possible ways that it listed to do.

My ZMP does not even turn off. This is wasting the battery so please help me. I have emailed Creative but they have not replyed yet.

You must have had firmware on there if it worked, but "reload firmware" actually erases the firmware. It's a badly named function.
Unfortunately though you've tried all you can as a user. The player sounds faulty and you ought to contact Creative support for a replacement.

  • Zen Micro not booting up and recovery mode doesn't do anyth

    Hi,
I just got my Zen Micro yesterday and it worked fine until the second battery charging.
I charged it using the AC adapter. When it finished charging I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't go past the Createi've log (the second screen after the one with the copyright notice)
Since then I've tried all the options in the recovery menu but they don't seem to have any effect. (The recovery mode displays "Creative Zen Micro v0.0.58 at the top)
I tried "clean up" and gave it at least 30 minutes but it didn't finish.
I tried "reload firmware" but after some time I took out the battery and it still gets stuck at the second Creative screen. I don't get the firmware error screen.
Also tried the format and reboot options... nothing.
Yesterday I upgraded the firmware to .02.05 firmware and didn't have any problems. All the software also worked fine on my WinXP machine.
    Would appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    Greg.

I've had the exact same problems as GregL, except that I have the original firmware that came with the Zen Micro (I was planning to upgrade it until this whole mess happened).
I charged it fully a few times, and it'd been working fine for about fi've days, and now, I can't get past the "Creative" logo screen! Recovery menu works, but the options don't seem to get anywhere. They never get past "Erasing Firmware", "Scan Disk", and the like. I've tried rebooting and I've tried removing the battery, but nothing has changed.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with my Zen Micro?

  • Zen Micro hangs up both in rescue mode and normal m

I've had my Zen Micro for about 2 months now but all of a sudden it just didn't want to start up at all (It came to the CREATIVE screen and then just stopped). Not knowing about any rescue mode, I decided to send it back to where I bought it. I got it back a few weeks later, with the message that I had to manually update firmware again but I didn't really know how I could since it wouldn't even be recognized in windows. I then came here and saw that there was this cool Rescue Mode thing. I started it up and just decided to format it all. I looked at it after 0 minutes but it was still saying "Formating all". Waited a few hours, same thing. Then I went to bed. When I woke up, the screen was blank and I thought it was done but it had just ran out of batteries. So I plugged it in and tried to start it up, but same thing with the creative screen. Then I decided to go into the rescue mode (again) and try to do the reload firmware. It have been standing at "Erasing firmware" for about 3 hours now and nothing has happened.
    Should I just return it's
