Zen Micro scroll bar malfunct

For the last four weeks or so, the vertical scroll bar on my Zen Micro has been intermittently malfunctioning. It always permits me to scroll downwards, but when it's not working, it doesn't let me scroll upwards. This causes problems, especially when I accidentally end up lowering the volume instead of raising it and get the volume stuck at 0. Previously, after a day or two, the scroll bar returned to normal temporarily and I was able to raise the volume again. Once, after the machine malfunctioned for several consecuti've days, I emailed Creative. They recommended that I install new firmware. The scroll bar worked for a few hours and then failed again.
After the most recent scroll bar failure, three days ago, I waited to see if the bar would return to normal. When it hadn't by this morning, I tried reloading the PlaysForSure firmware (L6_2_2_02), which was the same as the firmware I last installed on the machine, today. That firmware load failed, so I loaded the alternate firmware (LB___0). None of this worked -- and the volume didn't even restore itself to some middle-ground level. Before, during and after the firmware reloading, my volume control has been stuck at 0, rendering the player effecti'vely useless.
I can't do a disk cleanup or reformat through the reset window, as the default option for both of those settings is NO, which is physically below YES on the menu and I can't scroll up.
My warranty has expired. I don't want to send the player to Creative for service, because I don't know how expensi've it would be to fix the player. Frankly, as I had to replace the player for two other malfunctions twice during the warranty period, the next time I spend money on an MP3 player it'll be a different brand.
Can any of you help me? Thank you so much for reading this long.

This is just a shot in the dark, but did you have your headphones plugged into the jack while trying to scroll?
I've noticed on my Zen Micro that the scroll function is sometimes balky without the headphones connected, but it works perfectly with them plugged in.

  • Zen Micro: Malfunctioning Touch

My Zen Micro's touchpad has decided to stop working properly after not using my player for quite some time. I turned it on to use it yesterday and this problem began. It has never been abused thus this is happening almost out of the blue. The button most affected is the middle scrolling section, every other button is fine. I have a difficult and frustrating time scrolling up and down, and where I would normally "press enter" in the centre requires numerous hard pushes as opposed to a light tap. I have switched my touchpad sensitivity to 'high' and this did nothing to help. Is there anything I can do to fix it's Or do I have to seek professional help? Actually the better question is, CAN it be fixed? And if so, how do I go about doing that?
    Thank you!

Actually, I think this is a widespread problem with the Zen Micro's; I've had two and both malfunctioned just the way you describe, one of them on the scroll pad like yours, and I've read several users on this forum who also have encountered this. The sensitivity setting has no effect as the touch pad on these occasions goes completely numb for a moment. Do a experiment: try to plug out your headphones and see if the the problem comes after a few seconds and then remains. If you can notice this, it is also according to my (and others users') experience. Weird, isn't it's Like the touch pad relies on some power surge going through the jack.
I switched to the MicroPhoto two weeks ago, and my unit does not have this problem. In many ways the MicroPhoto is what the Micro should be, as the various quality problems seem sorted out (like freezing and bricking upon PC connection, the touch pad and seeminlgy also the headphone jack problem). The only problems with the ZMP seem to be connectivity problems and (with an early batch probably) disturbing electronic interference upon turning the screen on with an early batch of units (it's noticeable on mine, though very weakly).
The only thing you can do is to return it somehow, if you find it worth it. I didn't, and after one year of joy but also frustrating navigation problems the headphone jack broke...
    Cheers

  • Zen Micro #2 - USB Device Not Recognized / Malfunct

    Hello again, all -
I am now getting the error of "device not recognized" / "device has malfunctioned" when I plug my Zen Micro into my PC (running XP SP2).
This is actually the second Micro that I've had, with the first one returned (through Newegg.com) for exactly the same problem. That first one I actually went as far as wiping off my old OS and re-installing (thinking that I had just hosed up the USB drivers somehow), but I still got the same error.
After replacing the first Micro, I got my new Micro in the mail and it has/had worked beautifully up until today. The only thing I did notice was that it did not seem to like working side-by-side with my Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0, the system apparently confused the two. As soon as I'd plug the player in, the mouse would behave strangely - sporatically moving and then stopping, before just stopping all together. Reverting back to an old PS/2 mouse during times of transfer would solve the problem.
I am now getting exactly the same old malfunctioned/unrecognized error with XP with my Micro. I plug it in, and the "charging" symbol shows up and freezes in the top right corner of the player's screen (it's not flashing as it should be). The player is completely frozen. At the same time, the XP error box pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen.
    Things I've tried:
() Zen Micro disk cleanup - with no effect
    (2) Registry clean up - deleted all instances of my USB mouse, the Zen Micro itself, and all "UNKNOWN" located in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet00\Enum\USB - with no effect
    (3) Removed / re-installed the Creative Jukebox Driver (with new June 05 version) - with no effect
I am not about to format my PC all over again since this problem is identical to my previous occurrence on my old player, and I believe it will do nothing.
I have no other PC here at home to test this with on another PC, perhaps I will take it into work with me tomorrow.
USB is a truly crappy protocol, but I'm going to have to put most of the blame on Creative here for what I see as probably the worst technical support I've ever experienced. The lack of support for this product is incredible, with voodoo-like "try this, in this order" suggestions that are nothing other than a shot in the dark by them.
Such a shame - this is a great player when it actually works, but it looks like my players from them might be batting 0 for 2. Definitely will think twice about buying their any of their follow-on products, as yet another "next generation" of players is just around the corner.
Any suggestions as to what I should do? It's looking like a hardware (Micro) failure to me, as upon attempting communication with the PC it immediately freezes (while my other devices work beautifully).

Did you try the player on another PC? This will narrow down where the problem is very quickly.

  • Zen micro photo malfunct

I got a zen micro photo a couple of weeks ago, every thing installed fine, it worked perfect. Then one day I go to plug it in for a charge and get an error message "One of the divices attached to this computer has malfunctiond and windows does not recondnise(spell) it. As soon as i get this error, the zen micro completly freezes. The only way i can turn it off is if i take out the battery. At first i thought this was the player it self, so i went beck and returned it. Got a brand new one and everything. I had all the software installed so i just plugged it in and guess wat... i got the same error! I tried reinstalling everything and starting from scratch, but i keep on getting the same error. I need help guys! I want to get this thing to work and there is no way in heck that im getting an IPOD! Im running win xp sp2 recently i installed a usb 2.0 card (which is plug and play) this was inbetween the time i hadn't charged my zen yet. I tried pluging it back to my old usb ports but i still got the same error. I dont think its the usb card...
i need help plz! I cant charge it because it freezes when i plug it in and my battery is almost dead.

I never encountered this with my MicroPhoto, perhaps one of the devices malfunctioning could be in your computer itself and not the player?

  • Creative Zen Micro - Freezes/Clicks - Hard Drive Malfuncti

I know that many of you are having similar problems with your Zen Micros...here's the deal with mine (it is a 6gb, probably doesn't matter).
I bought it a year ago, used it for two months, then it sat in its box in a drawer for probably four months. When I went to use it again, battery was completely de-charged (or so I assumed, because it was not turning on). So I plugged it in, it began to charge, but would not turn on to play and was not recognized by the computer, even after several hours of charging. Additionally, when I held it up to my ear, I could hear a repeated clicking noise, like something was stuck inside. I took it back to Circuit City... obviously, it was too late to return it. They had a technician look at it for an hour, but he said it looked like it was fried.
I continued charging the Zen for probably 2 days straight after that, and finally, it turned on and played like normal. I thought the problem had been that the battery was just far too de-charged and it just needed that extra 24-hours of being plugged in. So it continued working for a few months.
Then I put it away for a month. Again, it sat in its box. I took it out a few days ago...same old problem.
    - when I plug it into the computer, sometimes it turns on and charges with the battery symbol in the upper corner, and sometimes it just goes to the Creative main screen (as if it's going to turn on and play) but just freezes.
    - when it is not correctly charging (just frozen on the main screen), it always continues with the clicking noise.
I read responses on this forum that said to try banging it against the table. I did this and the clicking noise did stop, but it still stays frozen on the main screen.
I am a struggling, broke college student who foolishly spent $200 on this mp3 player...and in the past year, I have only been able to use it for about 5 months. So many people have the same problem with the Zen Micro that it makes me curious as to why Creative seems to not be doing anything to help. They say to send it in and get a new hard dri've - but that will cost $200...and at this point, I would only have to spend about half of that to buy a new Zen Micro altogether! Most of my family and friends use IPods and I have never witnessed such problems.
    Anyone have any suggestions?

Yea, I've read the FAQ and troubleshooting. I can get into rescue mode but when I select any option it then freezes along with more clicking. I've spent the last two hours reading about this, I'm quite certain it's hard dri've failure/sticking. My last mp3 player got stolen and I had to wait a week to receive my zen micro in the mail. Now I have to wait another few weeks to have it fixed. I need it at work, so my life sucks without my mp3 player. This is very not cool. Thanks for your reply, btw. Unfortanetly, I don't think there is anything I can do.

  • Zen Micro 1.02.05 Firmware sluggi

    Hi guys,
I updated the firmware on my Zen Micro a few days ago to .02.05 from the original one I got (forgot the version number) and scrolling, going through menu's, changing volume, fast forwarding, rewinding tracks seems to be a bit sluggish compared to the previous one. Music plays fine, and everything works perfect but the sluggishness is a little annoying. Anyone else with this firmware having the same problems?

Still using .0.03 here, was that your original? Im not intending to upgrade, since I read about malfunctions with other versions quite often. Good luck, I think you can revert from .02.05 if necessary. Enter "firmware upgrades into the search bar at the top of the message listing page and see what you get.

  • Zen Micro: Bricked or just lame, you dec

    Hi all,
I have a zen micro which i flashed to the old .0 non MTP firmware to have support with winamp. Anyway i decided i wanted MTP support so i tried to flash it and it got stuck on a stage "Please reboot device". I decided to switch it off myself by removing battery and it went on but i felt like it wasnt set up properly.
Anyway i went on to boot into the bootloader and select reload firmware however it went for like second then stopped and said load new firmware.
I plugged it into my PC and both of the creative apps say :Your Player is not connected, please connect ur player.
So i rolled back to wmp0 and no result, it stilll comes up as a MTP device. I think im boned.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks
    Julius

Can you mention if you're charging through the AC adaptor (on a wall plug) or through USB from a computer? AC adaptor is better (faster).
What you're describing (totally drained in one night, after switching off with or 2 bars on battery indicator) is at the least unusual, and may indicate malfunction.
Now, if you have some time left before the deadline until which you can exchange in the store, then I suggest you just test this some more. Then you can make an informed decision.
Charge the battery fully (at least 4 hours on AC adaptor). Afterwards, start playing random songs (preferably MP3 constant bitrate 28 kbps) continuously. See if you get ? 2 hours playing time. (without EX, without Smart Volume, without fast forward, ... ). That'll tell you how the battery performs on playing.
Then for the apparent draining, you'll have to just collect some more experience.
It may be that the battery indicator is just not calibrated correctly yet, because it's the first days of use. For calibrating, it's good to FULLY discharge and recharge the battery. On normal use, a Lithium-Ion battery will li've longer when recharged often (so not fully discharged at every use). But for battery indicator calibration, you want to discharge the battery fully let's say once per month or so. (see www.batteryuni'versity.com)
    good luck.

  • Zen Micro: changing volume through programmi

Does anyone know a way to change the volume of a Zen Micro other than using the scroll bar? Can it be done through Creative Media Explorer or some other computer program rather than through the Zen itself? As I said in a previous post, I'm having scroll bar problems, and if I can just force the volume to change without using the scroll bar, at least I'll be able to play music.

Alas, I am no longer under warranty, and at the moment am not willing to pay $25 plus whatever else the repair costs to get my Micro working again. I did, however, just buy a $2 wired remote control, which solves the immediate problem of not being able to hear anything at all from my player. (Raising the individual volume levels of songs hardly helps when the player itself is effecti'vely on mute.) Saving playlists, etc, is still impossible, but at least I have my music for the moment.

  • Zen Micro Downlo

My Micro works with Media Center 0 now. Need to download 3 programs from Creative to make it work with Napster and have easier organizing with Media Organizer. Question: when I download do I have the player connected? Do I hit RUN or SAVE when the dialog box appears. Last time I tried Creative Organizer did not see the connected Micro. Am I right that Firmware resides on the player and Software on my computer?

    Ecamp,
Did you download the plugin as Jason recommended?

  • Zen Micro: ok or I have to change

Hi all. I'm Giuseppe and I'm Italian.
I bought a Zen Micro 4 days ago. I have problems with the battery from the first day. The play time is very short (I've read about it) but I have also another problem: it happens that I turn off the player when the battery is charged (/3 or 2/3) but, when I try to turn it on after the night (not after days but just after hours...), it doesn't! I find it completely discharged!
Do you think I have to change it with a new one where I bought it's I can do it and I'd like to do it because it's not possible to use my micro zen...
    Thank you for every answer
    Bye
    Giuseppe

  • Various problems with Zen Micro, but getting smaller and small

Last night I turned on my Zen Micro and heard Led Zeppelin's All of my Love for about 4 seconds before the micro froze and started buzzing, reminding me of my Nintendo when the cartridge was dirty. So I tried restarting it several times and it continued with the same. I left it for the night, since I was at someone else's house and had not installed the new firmware; I needed to be at my laptop to mess around with it. In the morning, I looked up some stuff and found out how to access the recovery mode, which I did. I did all of the options, the last one being to format the hard dri've. I had already erased the firmware, but I formatted the hard dri've after I plugged it into my USB port and saw that it had been corrupted anyways and it was completely empty. Then, seeing as everything was gone anyways, I took the opportunity to download the firmware updates and install them, or at least attempt to. I got a message saying the battery level was too low, and to charge it before installing the firmware. I took out the battery and it ran on main power while I installed the first firmware. Then, I put the battery back in and installed the second firmware (newest) and it gave me the same error message about the level being too low. I took out the battery again, but this time it just turned off. I didn't quite understand so I just went to sleep and left it charging. I woke up and was able to install the firmware. Then I went to Windows Media and synced my library to the Micro. Bad idea. I don't know if it's the same with any of you, but I don't exactly love all the songs in my music library. It took every audio file I have on my computer and put it on the Micro. So I figured I'd just open MediaSource and do the whole editing thing I did before it got busted. That doesn't work because of course the music under Creative Zen Micro is different from the music under PC Music Library which, until today, were identical. Now. All I want to know is how I can look at the music inside my Micro in the same way I would if it were in my PC Music Library, where I have a scroll bar on the side with all the artists and albums and a list of tracks next to it. I need this because instead of everything being free and looking the same way it would in my downloads folder, everything is now in folders by artist name and it will take me forever to figure out which songs I do and do not want. Still, at least I've got it working now.

It shouldn't be, assuming you synced via WMP the contents of the PC Music Library. Ultimately the contents of the PC Music Library is irrelevant though as don't you want to edit the contents of the player? I'm guessing you're using the v2 firmware which makes this a little harder...

You can't. That's the problem with the v2 firmware. You might want to go back to the . firmware. For the differences in the firmware versions look at the FAQ post.

  • ***Dropped Zen Micro Not Working 100%

I recently dropped my Zen Micro Mp3 player from a height of about 4 Feet. When I turned it back on I found out that the Player was not working correctly. I can only scroll up (no matter what direction I scroll it always moves up). Im not able to use any other options besides "All Tracks" because I cant scroll down to select them. My Volume is always at MAX because I cant lower it. I can still use the Fast-Forward and Re-Wind buttons. The Play/Pause button still works. So do the "Menu" and "Back" buttons. The only problem is the Scroll bar(or button whatever its called). It can tell when im touching it because it shows the volume that its at and it can still scroll (Like I said before, only up). Anyone know how to fix this without having to send it in? I dont have a warranty anymore.

Hmm, thats odd considering i dropped mine over 0 feet onto a concrete floor and it works fine, considering that it beeps every so often. Well, to your problem, have you tried recovering the player by taking the battery out, and turning the power on at the same time you are putting the battery in?

  • 4GB Black Zen Micro - Insentive touch

I have had this Micro Zen for about a year. I used the touchpad at the default setting (medium sensitivity). Over the time, I had hard time using vertical scroll bar (one in the middle, used for changing playlists/tracks/volume)., I changed the senstivity to highest - it helped, but not for long. Now 4 out of 5 times I cant get it to work.
Anybody else facing the same problem? Any workarounds.
    Thanks in advance
    Kapil
PS. I havent upgraded the firmware.

You should follow the advice in the "My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" section of the FAQ, just in case this is being caused by a firmware related issue.
You should also have at least the ..0 firmware. Don't upgrade to the v2 firmware unless you play on needing PlayForSure support.

  • Creative MediaSource won't recognize my Zen Micro all of the sudden!! What is going o

When I first began using my Zen Micro, Creative MediaSource worked fine. I could start my player and it recognized it right away. Then I was told I had to update my firmware and download an update to MediaSource. I did both but shortly thereafter I started having problems! Primarily, when i plug in my Micro a window pops up where I have 3 options, none of which are Creative MediaSource. The window has "MTP Media Player" across the top bar, but i havn't a clue what the "MTP" stands for. The 3 options given are "Sync your music using Napster", "Synchronize media files to this device using Windows Media Player", and "Take no action". I initialy tried "Take no action" and then opened MediaSource only to find it didn't recognize my Micro any more. I then e-mailed Creative for help and got a reply telling me to.............
Thank you for contacting Creative Technical Support.
In regards to your issue, you can try uninstall and reinstall
    MEdiaSource with these procedures.
. Click START -> RUN -> type MSCONFIG and click OK.
    2. Click SELECTIVE STARTUP and then uncheck LOAD STARTUP GROUP ITEMS.
    3. Apply the changes and reboot the computer when prompted.
    4. Uninstall MediaSource from the system using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
    5. Manually delete the MediaSource folders from the computer system :
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTCDDB
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIA MANAGER
    C:\MEDIA\MUSIC
    6. Right-click your My Computer icon and click Properties.
    7. Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.
    8. Remove any listings for Creative NOMAD products in the Device
    Manager
(they will most likely be located in the Uni'versal Serial Bus
    Controllers category).
    9. If you have a category call Other Devices, look for listings in
    there
called USB Device. If you have any, remove them.
    0. Install MediaSource only from the original installation CD.
NOTE: DO NOT OPEN MEDIASOURCE WHILE PERFORMING THESE PROCEDURES.
Also, you can try reloading the Zen Micro's firmware through recovery
    mode.
Move and hold the Power button to the Power On position and re-insert

I followed the directions, but 3 of the folders listed in step 5 didn?t exist (only C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE did), there were no Creative NOMAD products listed as in step 8, and there was no ?Other Devices? as stated in step 9. I did everything else for all the steps through step 0.
I then re-installed Creative MediaSource from the CD only to find it still didn?t recognize my player! I?ve now done this twice with the same results!
Zen Micro Media Explorer doesn?t even recognize my Micro when it'ss plugged in! It just keeps saying ?The device is not connected. Please connect your Zen Micro to the computer?.
I?m hardly a tech expert, but it seems to me that something on my PC is detecting my player and decieding for itself that the only 2 programs it will let manage my Zen Micro are Napster and Windows Media Player. If this is the case where do I go from here?!?!

    LakeTahoeGuy,
Just as SSR mention, if you're using v2.xx.xx (MTP) firmware then you will need to get the correct version of Media Explorer that support this firmware and also install the MTP plugin for MediaSource. Both the software and plugin are available from the site SSR mention.
