Zen Micro Stalling on Boot Up after serv

Hi all,
wee problem for ya. Brought my zen micro in for a service after the infamous headphone socket problem to an electronics service centre I'd been told are pretty good. I even printed out the instructions I found on the boards at http://www.noboundrees.com/micro_fix/. Three and a half weeks and ?35 later, I eventually got the player back but no go on boot up!
All I was getting was the Creative logo and then it just hung. I didn't even get the drop of water animation thing!
Went into recovery mode, tried resetting, formatting, reloading firmware... Everything I could think of but nothing worked.
Eventually brought it back into the service company to try to get them to fix it which, after a few days it looked like they did. They managed to get it into the normal operation menus. According to them, all they did was open it up and close it again! As soon as they gave it back to me though, it stalled when I was trying the radio and from there, back to the logo at boot up problem.
This looks to me like the problem lies with them, they're obviously not agreeing with me yet though! The player was working fine before that!!! Is there anything I can do about this? Can anybody recommend anything that could have gone wrong?
Thanks for your time,
Tony

The same thing happened to my Creative. I have tried various methods to remedy the problem, but to no avail. I would reccomend applying for an RMA, to get a new Creative- that's waht I did with mine.

  • Creative Zen Micro failing to boot

I'm stuck with my 3 month old Zen Micro failing to boot up. It gets stuck at a screen showing 'CREATIVE' and refuses to go further. It happened to fall from my hand to the ground a day previous to this. But immediately after it fell down, it was playing properly and I listened to a song before shutting it down. I tried charging it. It is not turning on or off. It will automatically discharge. My cousin bought this from the US. I am in India and I don't know if I can get any service centre to check for hardware troubles. Can you help me?

Unfortunately that does sound like a hardware problem. If it is broken because it was dropped then this would not normally be covered by warranty. For more information on warranty or possible repairs, you can contact Customer Support for India:

  • Zen Micro freezes when boot or in recovery m

In brief, my Zen Micro freezes at booting up or in recovery mode.
It stops at the "Creative" logo. I've tried to do everything in the "Recovery Mode" but none ofthem seems to run. Tried "Disk Cleanup" but it stucks at "Scanning Disk..." and stays on and does nothing. I know it is supposed to show you the status in percentage, but it doesn't get to that point. Tried "Formatting" but it displays "Formatting..." and stucks and does nothing. It is able to"Reboot" but upon rebooting, it freezes at the "Creative" logo screen again.
During the time it's turned on, the computer would not recognize the player as "connected", I couldn't do firmware flash/upgrade. The computer also won't recognize as a removable storage. The Zen Microis in perfect condition, I haven't dropped it once, bought it for less than 2 weeks. Current version of firmware is .0.03 (as i recall). model # DAP-MD0004
Any comment is greatly appreciated!! Thanks =)
    ps.
and yes, my battery drains when the player is off (and not in standby mode), with or without headphone plugged in.

    <SPAN>Hi kaic,
<SPAN><SPAN>My Zen Microphoto has exactly the same problem you described. What I like to know is if you got it replaced or if somehow you could fix it yourself. And if Creative replaced it, which they said the problem was?

    Anfernee,
If you can't choose/complete any of the options in Recovery Mode, there isn't much else you can do, it sounds like the player might be faulty.
You didn't mention when (or where) you purchased the player, but it would be best to speak to Customer Support. If you're in warranty they'll be able to replace the player for you, if you're out of warranty they can arrange a repair (and let you know how much the repair would cost).

  • Zen Micro / Rhapsody To-Go - problems after upgra

I am using my new Zen Micro 6GB with my Rhapsody To-Go subscription. After performing all the reccomended firmware and DRM upgrades, I still have these problems below, which I already reported the issues to the Real people.
While I'm waiting for their responses, does anyone else have the same issues? Any other suggested solutions?
    TRANSFER:
The Rhapsody software refuses to transfer certain tracks that are supposed to be compatible with the To-Go service. The transfer fails and gives me an "unsupported media type" error.</LI>
Solution: Try using Real Player to transfer these tracks. It works for me.</LI>
    DELETE:
I cannot always use the Rhapsody or Real Player software to delete tracks off of the Zen Micro player (It does work sometimes).</LI>
Solution: Use the Creative Media Organizer (CMO) to delete them.</LI>
    SYNC:
Using the Rhapsody software to Sync in "Overwrite" mode does not delete tracks I removed from playlists. </LI>
Solution: Use CMO to delete tracks, restart Rhapsody, then sync</LI>
    LIBRARY CHAOS IN CMO:
Tracks transfered with Rhapsody are in artist folders, but split between two master "Music" folders</LI>
Tracks transfered with Real Player are listed only as individual tracks, not in artist folders</LI>
Solution: ? I'm afraid that re-organizing tracks will cause more problems within Rhapsody</LI>
    PLAYLISTS IN CMO:
Rhapsody playlists are shown on the Zen Micro, but cannot be seen/edited within CMO.</LI>
    Solution: ?</LI>
I'd appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Hi -- Actually - wasn't aware of that - but I had started Napster just to see what happened - and nothing.
That being said - I e-mailed help desk and got another series of steps to get the device to be recognized. Different drivers to download, etc.
After a few more hours of playing with it - I was able to reconnect and when I reconnected to Napster - the transfer errors were gone.
I'm not posting the steps only because I'm not exactly sure what caused it to stop being recognized in the first place and then what caused it to start transferring again. Personally -- I think it was when I threatened to replace it with an IPOD
Just really glad to have it back!! Thanks all for your assistnce.

  • Zen Micro Keys won't work after uploading tra

Monday night I downloaded all the firmware onto my new Zen micro and when I did that Napster finally let me start transferring all my music back to it. Everything seemed hunky dory so I went to bed while I waited for 200ish songs to transfer over. When I got up yesterday morning and turned on the Zen, Napster recognized that there were tracks on it, but none of the buttons worked. I couldn't flip through the menus or see anything except the main screen. So I left work early so that I could call Creative's customer service line before they closed. Basically the guy talked me through re-downloading the firmware back onto the Zen and then Ta-Da! all my playlists showed back up and I could flip through the menus and play the music. But he suggested I remove all the tracks and re-load them in case any of them had bug (but my though was....shouldn't re-downloading all the firmware DELETE all the tracks in the first place?) But whatever. I re-transfer all the tracks over to it and went to the movies. When I got home....same thing as Monday. Napster's recognizing that indeed, there are tracks on the Zen, but I can't navigate through any of it's menus and the keypad acts like it's broken. Keep in mind, I just pulled this **bleep**er out of the box MONDAY NIGHT.

Keys not working can't be related to Napster.
Run through the advice in the "My Zen is not behaving properly, won't startup, or goes into rescue mode. What should I do?" section of the FAQ post.
If this doesn't help the player is faulty.

  • Zen Micro and Music-To-Go (Napster) Serv

Has anybody had any problems with transferring music to their player recently? My last transfer to the player was about a week ago, but I haven't been able to do any transfers/deletions from my computer to the player today. It will show transfers at 0% or transfers will result in errors and the Micro will also freeze up (the battery icon does not alternate between the charge level and the lightning icon). My player is close to full capacity (about 5.3 gb full) and I was thinking that this might be causing slow transfers, but would not explain the Micro freezing on me. I tried running a disk cleanup, but that didn't seem to fix the problem. Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Make sure you are running the latest version of the Napster software. If you continue having probs transfering you can always use Windows Media Player 0 to transfer the tracks.

  • ZEN micro startup l

i have a quyestion, but first of all, sorry for my english...
when i turn on my zen micro, it appears the zen micro logo (after the creative and the animated), but, for a moment, a group of pixels dissapears. i have the latest firmware version (.). is that normal? what can i do?
please, if you dont understand the problem, let me know and i?ll try to explain it better.
    thanks for your help!!!

Do you mean that the logo is corrupted and distorted or that some of it goes away? Ever since I installed the firmware you mentioned half of the logo will disappear and my player will either start to work or a song will begin to play followed by the zen micro stalling.

  • A way how to fix the Zen Micro head phone jack prob

Hi! I am one of the many people that purchased a Zen Micro MP3 player, I loved it until around 6 months of use, an audio shorting problem with the head phone jack, started to repeat it's self every time, that I would plug my head phone's into the Zen Micro head phone jack. After awhile, I was tired of this problem, so I just decided to never use it again, unless I could find out if the maker of the Zen Micro had a repair service. I noticed that some people had their Micro's replaced a few times under the warranty that is included with the player. I also noticed that some one created a way to fix this problem, but I wanted to see if I could find an easier way to fix the problem. Well I did end up finding an easier way to fix the problem, this is what I did.
Absolutely in all means I can't be held responsible / reliable for any unforseen thing / things, that you may or could, do to the Zen Micro, by following the instructions, which I provided. By trying what I did by following the instructions, which I provided you; you accept all responsibility to any thing / things, that may or could happen to the Zen Micro.
    The Instructions:
I took a stapler pressed it down to get a used staple then I carefully inserted it in the outer part of the plastic head phone jack ring. Then I pressed the rest of the staple flat against the Zen micro. And Now I get great sound, it is at least better than, the way it was before I inserted the staple. I would suggest to always remove the staple. When you connect the Zen Micro to a computer, charging device, or any other device other than a pair of head phones. You understand that if you leave the staple inserted in the Zen Micro and don't remove it. While you have it connected to a computer, charging device, or any other device, or devices, even a pair of head phones, and some thing happens, you can't hold me responsible.

  • Zen Micro 6gb installation probl

Ok, so Iv'e sent in a 5 gb zen micro twice now because of that headphone jack problem, and this time when they sent me a new one, they "upgraded" me to a 6gb. Well, I try to use this 6gb with the software i have installed from the last Micro I had, and my comp will not recognize it. So I try to user the cd that came with my old Micro, and it will not install right. When they sent me this 6gb, the only thing they sent me was the Micro and its battery, so I have no way to know if the cd that comes with a new 6gb is different form a 5gb cd, because if it is, then am I screwed?

A firmware basically is what makes an electronic device tick. It is the software responsible for every and all functions.
The Zen Micro has two versions of firmwares:
The original version works with Creative's own protocol and thus needs the installation of drivers for the system to recognize it. However it will function with all Windows versions while there also is unofficial support for Linux and MAcOS.
The second version functions using MTP, a protocol made by Microsoft and as such it is only supported by Microsoft's Windows Media Player 0 under OSs that support it (which basically only are WinXP and Vista...)
The simplest way to see which firmware you have is to look in the Micros' menu under System->Information. There you'll see firmware version.
If they both have version (..0 being the latest) then you'll need drivers for the both. As I already said, when I tried to update the drivers without uninstalling the old ones the drivers were installed but they wouldn't work.
First of all make sure the player(s) is(are) connected to the PC FIRST.
Mind you, in my case the latest drivers were already installed (I updated them but then they wouldn't work, remember?). Now here's the thing:
When I opened the drivers properties I saw that the driver was DISABLED. (under General, device usage)
Ok, I enabled it, nothing happened. Then I tried to update the drivers. Here's what I did:
I put the CD with the original drivers in the dri've and selected for windows to look for the best drivers. After some time they indeed appeared to have found a better match and then they started installing them. After the installation was complete the driver's version was the same as rhe one BEFORE the "update" (since I had already updated to the latest version). However the moment the drivers were updated the device was finally recognized by the system, not even a reboot was needed...
You could try doing that too, if that won't work then you could try DLing the LATEST drivers (along with the Zen Micro Explorer) and install them AFTER uninstalling the old ones and REBOOTING. Again, it is important having the player(s) connected BEFORE starting the installation.
If after all that you still can't connect it ask again!

  • Problems with upgrading firmware in Zen Micro 4

I am currently having a problem with upgrading the firmware on my Zen Micro 4 GB. The Zen Micro seems to hang right after the first reboot, therefore not finishing the whole upgrade. I am currently trying to upgrade to 2.2.02. It seems that whenever I try to reboot the Zen Micro while it is connected via USB, it hangs at the Creative Logo and I have to end up resetting the system. Oddly enough, I have a second Zen Micro that I was able to upgrade the firmware with no problems whatsoever. Any suggestions?
P.S. I do have Windows XP SP2 with WMP 0 installedMessage Edited by Hubmasterflex on 0-07-2006 04:23 AM

Try using reload OS in the recovery mode to erase the current firmware, then connect to the PC and reload. You take a risk doing this though as if the firmware won't reload from the PC you'll be left with an effecti'vely useless player, and you'll have to contact support to get a replacement.

  • Zen Micro 6GB Frozen to the Starting Scr

I haven't opened my Zen Micro 6GB about 2 months after I received it and when I try to operate it, it stays frozen to the screen with "Creative, Copyright(c) 2004, Creative Technology Ltd, All Rights Reserved" and stays like that forever.
I even tried removing the battery, holding the power to on, and placing the battery back in and nothing is happening.
Can you give me some pointers? Or should I so a warranty exchange?

tried giving it some more power? It could just be lacking battery....

  • Zen Micro Frozen on " Zen Micro " scr

    HELP
!!! My Zen Micro will not boot up past the screen that reads Zen Micro. I tried shakeing it as I read here but that didn't work I also tried the tapping on the side and that didn't work either. What can I do? Thanks

FIRST OF ALL STOP HITTING IT!!!
It is a HARD DRIVE player!!!
This means hitting it may cause the HD's head literally CRASH on the disc completely and uterly destroying it!!!
Now, if it isn't already too late try this:
    Remove the battery.
Move the switch to the "on" possition and KEEP it there while putting the battery back and it boots until it shows a "Recovery Menu" screen.
    Then Select the FORMAT function.
CAUTION, THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE HD, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKED UP EVERYTHING!!!
    Then select the reboot.
If it stiLl doesn't work download the latest firmware ( or 2 version, depending what you had before, if you don't know which one to use I'd suggest DLing FW version ..0) from
    http://www.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/
and save it on your PC in the location you will easily find it ( e.g.
    Desktop).
Then do the same thing to get back to the Recovery Menu screen but this time select Reload Firmware from the Recovery Menu and follow the on-screen instructions on your player. This will take a few minutes. BE PATIENT and DO NOT DISCONNECT your player
during the process. IF YOU DO YOU'LL COMPLETELY BRICK YOUT PLAYER!!!
    Once completed select Reboot.
If it still won't work take it back to Creative...

  • Using Zen Micro on a linux b

    Hey
I'm getting my Zen Micro back from repairs today, after a very long wait, Last I had it i used windows XP, but now I have changed to Kubuntu Linux. Is it possible to mount the Zen into a linux box to transfer music to it in a decent way?

Wow such a strong statement for no purpose.
I use linux too and have a zen touch. THESE FORUMS would be EXACTLY where I would ask the broad question: "Can I use Linux with my Creative Labs MP3 player?" I would not necessarily expect a direct answer, but at least redirection. Not a smart-alek answer with commands to delete my file system.
Direct question on topic (mp3 players). ggs

  • Creative Zen Micro (Startup Failure) Need URGENT he

Hi, i was on holiday in Singapore about 2 weeks ago, and i bought myself a Creative Zen Micro from one of the local sho
    ps.
It worked fine, music played brilliantly, i was happy. However, today when i turned it on, it would display the 'CREATIVE COPYRIGHT' Screen, then followed by 'CREATIVE' in large letters across the screen. It would then freeze on this screen, and the off/on button would soon become useless, which meant that i could either leave it on and kill the battery, or take it out.
When i took the battery out and in again, it would repeat with the 'CREATIVE' sign. Following the 'recovery' methods, i managed to load the screen with all the different options such as clean-up, etc etc. However, when i load any of them up, it would freeze once again and i would end up taking the battery out again.
I have tried the reset button with a pin but that doesnt do anything. I have a spare battery that does exactly the same too. My computer doesnt detect the Zen btw.
I have important documents and almost my lifetime's supply of music that took me almost weeks to rip and store into that Zen. Now that its basically dead, and i bought it in Singapore, i have basically no warranty, i feel as if i have been throwing cases of money into the toilet. I need urgent help, if theres any other ways of restoring access to my Zen.
Check the reviews on a respectable site like amazon.com: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-Zen-Micro-6GB-Player/dp/B000AMR76S
After browsing around forums over the internet, I have found many other people complaining about this, which makes it a MAJOR flaw in the Creative Zens. Screw petty chargers and plugs, get the software right.

The problem you have is very simple, yet complicated to be solved. Your zen's hard dri've is dead. Most of the people who own a zen don't know it has a hard dri've inside. Some mp3 players have flash memory. Chances are that you've dropped your mp3 player. Zen's hard dri'ves are very sensiti've and must not be moved around too much. The way to go in this case is to replace the hard dri've. It is actually a micro hard dri've what you need. Seagate ST 5GB MicroDri've CF Type II. Once you have a new Hd installed you can format it using the zen's menu (remove the battery, hold the power button, place the battery in and wait untill you see the menu) This requires some experience formatting HD's and installing firmware. There is another option. You can buy a Patriot 4Gb Compact Flash Card, and follow what I've described above. The good thing about this is that your zen will take more vibration than the original. The bad one is tha those range from $70 - 99. I hope this hel
