Zen Micro Warranty - What a load of....

Word of Warning to those that have bought Zen from overseas as I have.
Some history first. I bought 4 Zen Micro in Feb'05 for my frens thinking the function and the look and feel of the player is better than IPOD and I know the Creative Brand.
I bought the Zen from overseas to bring it back to Australia to use while I was on Holiday. Which I'm sure is a normal thing these days. Thinking to myself that Creative is an international brand surly like any electronic goods now days if something happened to it. I will be covered by some sort of international warranty or at least even take it to Creative in my county to fix.
Anyway out of the 4 Zen Micro players 2 played up ( is ok after firmware upgrade, still acting up and the 3rd one only switched on to the Logo and stuck there. The player is pretty much Died)
To cut the story short I wrote to them with regarding my player is dead, they replied back with some solution (which I received very quick response from creative) but it was still no good. When I asked now that I have a Dead Player that was only purchased not 6 months ago what can I possibly do, this is the response that I received.
"As regards to your enquiry, we would like to extend our utmost serviceto assist you. However, please allow me to explain the situation to you,so that you can have a better understanding in terms of the servicingyour product. We would like to inform you that Creative do not provide internationalwarranty coverage for our retail products. We have an agreement with ourauthorized dealers and distributors that user are to send faulty productto us for servicing through them. In this way, all the freight chargeswill be bear by the distributors/dealers and Creative. This is also toprotect our users? investment in purchasing the original product from anauthorized dealer/distributor in their country. As such, we recommend and encourage our customers to purchase ourproducts in their own countries, and to utilize the service of ourauthorized dealers/distributors. In your case, you are sending the product to another channel but werenot purchased from them but through another dealer, they reserve theright not to take in your product. However, if they are willingly toservice your product, you will have to pay for the product servicecharge of AU$55.00 subjected to their approval. Moreover, if thewarranty period had expires, there will be a replacement cost incurred."
So basically I have been told that my player is dead. And only way to get it fix is for me to fly it back to the place of Origin (and NOT to Creative I was told but rather the shop where I bought it).
I tried calling up Creative in Aus and the customer service there gave me the same answer basically there is NOTHING they can do. But instead they gave me a Mobile Phone number to some guy that can "FIX" my player.
So after spending 400 bucks buying 4 players, I am left with 3 that are with faults and dead player.
If anything else happens to the other 3 player I'm pretty much stuffed.
Unless I go and pay for another 500 Plane ticket, to fly back where I first purchased the player hand over my receipt to the "Reseller" sit there and wait for them to go back to Creative and then come back to me with an Answer there is nothing much I can do.
Thanks alot Creative.

  • Faulty Zen Micro warranty cl

I li've in Cyprus and have recently (early November) purchased a Creative Zen Micro (5GB) through the Amazon.com store. It worked fine for the first 2 months or so, but then started having problems like taking a looong time to switch on. About a week ago, I tried to switch it on but it just wouldn't. At first, all I got was the Creative logo, now nothing - not even that. It looks pretty dead to me . I am now trying to understand how the warranty works.. How will I be able to send this to Creative and have it repaired/replaced? The warranty covers a hardware failure right? I didn't do anything to it-- in fact, I babied this thing since it was my first MP3 player. Any help would be appreciable, thanks.
    ---Charis

    charischristo,
This could be a hard disk dri've failure or it could be a failure on the mainboard. Are you able to get into recovery mode?

If not, then the method to get warranty repair / replacement is to contact the support center.

  • Hey..Zen Micro Warranty Quest

    Hi..
I bought my Zen Micro about 2 months ago and i have not encountered any major problems.... but...
Yesterday I dropped my Micro from a table onto a hard floor...and now...when u shake it a little bit(not agressi'vely just a little shake..) you can here moving parts inside it as if they had broken of inside..now my Zen Micro keeps freezing on the Creative logo... I have tried rebooting i and all that suff but I was wondering if my Warranty would cover this...and if it did..would they exchange over the counter or would they have to send it away..
(sorry for the mistakes I have missed this is a new keyboard and I am trying to get used to it!!!)
Thanks for all your suggestions.....Message Edited by macroman on 08-30-2005 04:09 AM

The warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. If this was bought on a credit card, or you have house insurance, it *might* be covered to some degree.

  • Zen Micro Problems - What to d

    Ok and i`m only doing this because of all the threads that ask the same questions over and over;
. If you are having problems with your headphones socket - consult the forum then try (4)
    2. If you are having problems with touch sensitivity - consult the forum then try (4)
    3. If you have problems with your battery charge / life - please consult the forum if you cannot solve your problem try (4)
    4. If you have looked at all the other threads and cannot find a solution that work then i suggest you -
    a) Take/Send your Micro back to where you purchased it from if its within 30 days you are entitlied to an exchange or Refund (this maybe uk only)
    b) If you cannot solve it this way please contact the Creatve support for your country and i`m sure they can help you to sort your problems out.
I am sure that the problems people are experiencing are but a small % of the amount of people who are happy with their Micros - Please be patient and try to follow the SSR and Admin instructions .
    Best of Luck all

Most people who come here aren't familiar with how forums are set up. I came here having only been a non-acti've member of one other forum and I wasn't familiar with the search options and the enormous database that had been amassed in these thousands of posts. The thing is people don't come here because they can't find the info anywhere else, they come here because they'd rather have someone answer a speciffic question they have right now. I am guilty of it too. Pretty much any info you want about troubleshooting is already on the Creative website and the answers that the Mods and SSR give are essentially deri'ved from information on the site. Common threads and questions are a reality of forums and there is no use in getting upset or trying to stem their flow.
If we all follow your logic every response to every post would be :

  • Zen Micro not recognized on one PC but is fine with 2 oth

Before I get totally frustrated with my PC, not the new Zen Micro 6g, what could I be overlooking to get the software and the PC to recognize this unit's This PC has Windows XP (no service packs installed), and after restoring system and reinstalling the software, I have the same problem: I connect the Zen to the USB cable, it says "Found New Hardware" and then proceeds to want to reinstall the software and drivers again from the CD. Naturally, it should have picked up the installed software and drivers but it hasn't.
On my other 2 PCs, one with Win XP sp2 and the other, my Toshiba laptop with Windows Media Player 2005 Edition, no problems at all. Immediately recognized the player after installation of the software and drivers.
I am almost at the point of not bothering to install it on the last PC as it works on 2 out of 3 fine but I would like to find out what could possibly be the problem. The two towers are identically set up: same Intel865Perl mbs, same hardware - only difference is the OS.
I have unistalled and reinstalled, system restored a few times, and I give up.
    Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks everyone. Oh, boy, I have a lot to search out, huh? Well, the chipsets are the same. The OS's are different though. I tried the USB from the mb....nothing. I do have an add-in card from Adaptec which is a dual connect card....contains 3 USB ports and 2 firewire ports. Nice card, usually works fine. All my other USB devices such as Canon camera, Sony camera, all work fine from both places. But, it might not like the Zen. Not sure why Zen wouldn't be compatible with an Adaptec USB card but I do know that Windows XP with no service packs does NOT recognize 2.0. just .. And I do get a message that states that I am connect a high-speed device with a non-high speed USB port. If that's the problem, why does it say "Found New Hardware" in the first place? And it does show up in Device Manager when connected, but with the yellow markings. It's listed under "Other Devices", and if I remove it, reboot and reconnect, the same message comes up asking me to install the drivers again.
I could upgrade this PC but I don't think that is going to make any difference, except that it will recognize the 2.0 USB ports.
I'm going to keep trying until I get it right. Any other ideas short of giving up?

  • Should I Be Worried(Go Ipod Instead?)(Zen Micro Proble

Thus far I've heard of quite a few issues with the Zen Micro. The most common ones I've heard of are freezing and the headphone jack problem. Now, at the moment I've experienced 2 issues that are really starting to worry me. Should I just go with an iPod Mini and avoid all the issues? What seems more problematic(Directed at people who do their research before buying) the Ipod Mini or the Zen micro? What are the major issues with the iPod mini compared to the Zen micro?
Here are the issues I've experienced:
)My Back, Menu Options, and Play/Pause buttons are incredibly stiff at times(especially when I first turn on the Micro)and I have to press them REALLY hard to get them working. Is there a fix for this? Is it something I should worry about?
2)Last night I encountered my second problem. It froze up for the first time. I was playing around with the Micro, and decided to test out the removable disk function. Just as it was partioning, it froze. I had to take out the battery. Should I be worried? Should I just go with another mp3 player instead? Please help me out. Has this happened to anyone else?
    I APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP!

XXT0t wrote:So you guys think I should exchange my Zen for another Zen because of the button problem? I mean, when the headphones are plugged in it works perfectly, but when I take them out the buttons are really stiff, as stated before my sensitivity is at High. Help.
If it's a big issue for you contact Creative Support first to check it's not a known issue, or update the firmware at the very least.
Also, I'm not too sure wether or not I should upgrade my firmware. As stated before the only issue Ive encountered other than the button problems, is that ONE time it froze during removable disk mode.
The ..0 has a very useful fix that reduces the standby period from 24 to 4 hours, increasing the battery life (although it depends on usage a little).
What are the differences between firmware 2.20.05 and ..0 ? Is one better than the other? Does one fix more issues than the other? Please keep the help coming.

and as part of the promotion currently running it would include an extra Battery.
If you wanted an AC adapter with it, you could order one along with the player and it should arri've in the same shipment. They are sold separately under accessories.

  • Zen Micro Car Accessor

    Hey,
I have done the research and it seems that the Zen Micro is what I want. Who knows the best price that I can get one for?
    Also,
I can't seem to find many car accessories for the Zen Micro. I want to be able to use it in my car but I also want it to be secure. I have seen that the Ipod has an FM transmitter with a holder. Is there anything like that for the Zen Micro? I tested an FM transmitter and the quality doesn't seem that good.

Creative sell a transmitter, made by Belkin. There are also many other transmitters out there like the AudiaX. As you say though the quality isn't great.
Have a look for the link "how to connect the players to a car stereo" in the FAQ post for other methods of connecting the player.

  • Zen Micro Startup Scr

dfoes anyone kno how to change the startup grapic on the zen micro? What versions of the programs and firmware do i need?

I can not do this ith the current firmwares available. i doubt there is going to be such a firmware to let you change the start up screen logo

  • Change Zen Micro facepla

Why can't you change the faceplate on your Zen Micro? What is it that makes it un-changeable?

    What else.........the touchpad.
    Its stuck to the micro.
You don't want to spoil the touchpad dont you?

  • I'm confused with Zen Micro firmw

Ok, first of all, I know this has probably been asked before, but I looked through the FAQ and searched the forum, and still didn't find what I was looking for.
What am I looking for? I'm not really sure, to be honest, but I guess I want to know if I should upgrade my firmware. I'd simply like to find some info about all the firmware versions. I have no need for fancy features or "PlaysForSure" (I'm confused about PlaysForSure too, but nevermind). I just want my player to connect to my PC, transfer some songs (I don't mind it being through Zen Micro Media Explorer, it's totally fine by me), and then play my songs for me.
I also read something about power issues, but it's all very confusing. I remember seeing some post about a patch making it even worse or something, back a few months ago when I was deciding which player to buy. That's why I'm a bit sceptical about this upgrade, and want it done right.
So.. That's about it. Which firmware should I use if I just want to fix problems that are there now? I'm currently using the default firmware version my player was bought with; .0.03.
(Oh, and I'm assuming that the fact that my Zen Micro was bought in Sweden does not matter. It's more convenient to buy it in the country I li've in =P)

question... I'm bit confused about the firmware also. I heard that there was a 2.(or somthing like that) and a . firmware for zen Micros. I'm currently using the . firmware for my Zen Micro. What is the difference between the 2. and . firmware? Or is there even a 2. firmware version? I ask because i keep hearing about a 2. firmware version for Zen Micro, is it true?

  • New zen micro not recognized by pc - help Christmas prese

The software installed perfectly - no problems. But now, I am getting message that the device is not being recognized by PC. Customer Support is closed for holiday and my daughter wants to try her new Zen Micro. What do I do now? This is the only computer we have and it is Windows XP 2002 version. Any advice? Thanks!

    yes
    OK, that's good news.
Now we have to find out why the Zen & our computer aren't talking to each other.
    From the NomadnessNet FAQ:
I have connection problems with my Zen, what can I do?
Here are some things to try if you have connection issues with your player:
. Reset the player and run a disk cleanup.
    2. Install the latest drivers, firmware and application software. Download these from Nomadworld.com.
    3. Try the player on ALL your USB ports and make sure you aren't using a hub.
    4. Try some other transfer software (see the list above).
    5. In Device Manager with the Zen connected delete it from the device listing. Physically disconnect the Zen from the USB cable, reset it, then reconnect to the PC to see if it is detected properly.
    6. Test the player on another PC (ideally a different make), if possible. This will help determine where the problem lies i.e. with the player, or the PC.
    7. Double check the files you are transferring. It's possible for the transfer to halt if the file is corrupt in some way, or the tag data within the file can't be read or is corrupt. The simple test is to try transferring a file that you know will work i.e. copy a file off the player, and then try transferring back to the player.
    8. Try a replacement USB cable (ideal if you can borrow one from somewhere, or if you have another USB device that uses the same cable).
    9. Check for BIOS and USB chipset updates.
    0. Delete the USB ports in device manager, then reboot the PC to see if they are redetected with updated drivers.
. Make sure the player isn't locked.
    2. Try going into Device Manager, update the driver manually by pointing it to C: Program FilesCreativeJukebox 3 Drivers.
    3. If you are using a PCI USB card, try moving the card to all the other PCI slots in the PC.
    4. Buy a known good PCI USB2 card from somewhere you can return it if it doesn't work i.e. the NEC USB chipset, typically used by Adaptec. Fit the card, and see if the player works with the ports on the card. Note that known problem chipsets include VIA, ALI, nForce and Intel, although it isn't clear if Creative and/or the chipset manufacturer are at fault.

  • I cannot load my Zen Micro any longer (warrant

I hop you understand what I'm write because I am not the best in English:
Before approx. .5 years I bought a MP3-Player (Zen Micro). But now I cannot load it any longer and this is not because of the cable!
Sinc 2002 in Germany all manufacturers of technology must promise a warranty of 2 years but the shop has said Creative gives only one year warranty and therefore they do not repair it.
    what can I do?
    In German:
Message Edited by michig on 03-3-200705:40 AM

  • Zen Micro "Firmware Problem" - One solution and what to do BEFORE it happ

My Zen Micro 6GB recently croaked with the dreaded "firmware problem" message. After a call to support, I was told to send it in, however I was later able to connect to the unit and download new firmware.
    Here's what happened:
In the middle of a playlist, the unit froze, displaying "firmware problem."
    - I took the battery out and powered up in recovery mode, then tried both reboot and reforomat. No luck; Still got "firmware problem."
    - I downloaded firmware updates, thn connected the unit to my laptop, which does not have MTP media explorer installed. The laptop does have Yahoo Music Engine and Windows Media 0, both of which are used regularly to copy music to device.
    - The computer recognized the Zen Micro, but the firmware update did not run, saying it could not connect to the device.
    - Retried several times, after reformatting, etc.
Now, here's what seemed to fix it
    - Let the battery drain completely while in the unit
    - Connected the Zen Micro to a computer with the MTP media explorer already installed. This is a system that is also used to regularly download music to the device.
    - Allowed the battery to charge for an hour
    - Started MTP media explorer, noticed that device went into "Recovery Mode"
    - Ran the firmware upgrade and it installed.
This is conjecture, but it seems that the MTP media explorer must be running to launch the firmware upgrade, but you can't install MTP without a valid device connected. I don't know why this is - maybe some kind of copy protection scheme. I only had it installed on one of my computers because it seemed unnecessary and I hate loading software that I'm not going to actually use.
This is what worked for me. Hope it works for you.
I'm still really disappointed with Creative's warranty terms, lack of phone support past 60 days and failure of tech support to recognize the problem and offer a solution, but my unit is working again and I didn't have to send it back!

By "MTP media explorer", do you mean the MTP/PlaysForSure version of Zen Micro Media Explorer? The earlier versions say "(for MTP devices)"; the latest ones say "(for PlaysForSure devices)". Or do you mean the Microsoft "MTP icon" in My Computer, which should appear on all MTP-capable systems (including your laptop)?
I don't really think it's a DRM or copy protection issue; I think the "firmware problem" is wiping out the hardware code the firmware installer uses to confirm that the device is indeed a Micro instead of, say, an iRi'ver. I suspect ZMME is one of the alternate means it uses to confirm that a Micro is connected. (An issue for further testing is whether ZMME should be launched or just installed.) Firmware fails on all kinds of devices; I suspect this is just a peculiarity of Creative's MTP/Janus firmware installer.
This is likely to be a significant issue for the FAQs and/or Creative knowledge base. With a growing number of MTP/Janus players in the Creative lineup (Sleek, MicroPhoto, and shortly Touch & Xtra), it probably won't be just a Micro issue in the future.
Edit: I just read the other thread, and they seem to solve it by going to a system without Creative software and installing the ..0 firmware. So there seems to be two solutions for now:
If you don't have any Creative software installed, reload firmware and run the ..0 upgrade. (If you need 2.x firmware, then install the Creative jukebox driver and run the 2.20.05 upgrade; you can uninstall the driver afterwards. Sorry, but some of us need 2.x firmware.)</LI>
If you have the 2.x ZMME installed, open it, then reload firmware and run the 2.20.05 upgrade.</LI>

  • Creative MediaSource won't recognize my Zen Micro all of the sudden!! What is going o

When I first began using my Zen Micro, Creative MediaSource worked fine. I could start my player and it recognized it right away. Then I was told I had to update my firmware and download an update to MediaSource. I did both but shortly thereafter I started having problems! Primarily, when i plug in my Micro a window pops up where I have 3 options, none of which are Creative MediaSource. The window has "MTP Media Player" across the top bar, but i havn't a clue what the "MTP" stands for. The 3 options given are "Sync your music using Napster", "Synchronize media files to this device using Windows Media Player", and "Take no action". I initialy tried "Take no action" and then opened MediaSource only to find it didn't recognize my Micro any more. I then e-mailed Creative for help and got a reply telling me to.............
Thank you for contacting Creative Technical Support.
In regards to your issue, you can try uninstall and reinstall
    MEdiaSource with these procedures.
. Click START -> RUN -> type MSCONFIG and click OK.
    2. Click SELECTIVE STARTUP and then uncheck LOAD STARTUP GROUP ITEMS.
    3. Apply the changes and reboot the computer when prompted.
    4. Uninstall MediaSource from the system using ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
    5. Manually delete the MediaSource folders from the computer system :
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\CTCDDB
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIA MANAGER
    C:\MEDIA\MUSIC
    6. Right-click your My Computer icon and click Properties.
    7. Click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager.
    8. Remove any listings for Creative NOMAD products in the Device
    Manager
(they will most likely be located in the Uni'versal Serial Bus
    Controllers category).
    9. If you have a category call Other Devices, look for listings in
    there
called USB Device. If you have any, remove them.
    0. Install MediaSource only from the original installation CD.
NOTE: DO NOT OPEN MEDIASOURCE WHILE PERFORMING THESE PROCEDURES.
Also, you can try reloading the Zen Micro's firmware through recovery
    mode.
Move and hold the Power button to the Power On position and re-insert
the battery to the Zen Micro. Hold the Power button until the rescue
    mode appears.
Clean Up: Performs a disk scan on the players hard disk
Format: Formats the players hard disk All contents will be lost
Reload OS: Reloads the Operating System on the Jukebox. Do not select
this option unless you have downloaded the firmware. Reloading your OS
will not effect the contents of the files stored on your Jukebox Zen
    Reboot: Reboots the device
Please attempt the options 'Reboot' and 'Clean Up' first. If they do
    not
help, you must try 'Reload OS'. To do this, you must have a downloaded
firmware from our website ready. Please let us know the results after
these steps, as soon as possible.
For faster service please reply with previous correspondence when
    replying to this email.

    "Get Creative"
I followed the directions, but 3 of the folders listed in step 5 didn?t exist (only C:\PROGRAM FILES\CREATIVE\MEDIASOURCE did), there were no Creative NOMAD products listed as in step 8, and there was no ?Other Devices? as stated in step 9. I did everything else for all the steps through step 0.
I then re-installed Creative MediaSource from the CD only to find it still didn?t recognize my player! I?ve now done this twice with the same results!
Zen Micro Media Explorer doesn?t even recognize my Micro when it'ss plugged in! It just keeps saying ?The device is not connected. Please connect your Zen Micro to the computer?.
I?m hardly a tech expert, but it seems to me that something on my PC is detecting my player and decieding for itself that the only 2 programs it will let manage my Zen Micro are Napster and Windows Media Player. If this is the case where do I go from here?!?!

    LakeTahoeGuy,
Just as SSR mention, if you're using v2.xx.xx (MTP) firmware then you will need to get the correct version of Media Explorer that support this firmware and also install the MTP plugin for MediaSource. Both the software and plugin are available from the site SSR mention.
