It's a case of starting the Creative software, putting the CD in the PC, then encoding it onto the player. There are other methods also.
And it says 250 songs MP3 and WMA 2500 songs
Don't let the marketing blurb fool you too much. This is 250 MP3 songs at 28kbit/s, and 2500 WMA songs at 64kbit/s.
MP3s at 28kbit/s do not equal WMAs at 64kbit/s, despite Microsoft (the inventors of WMA) saying so.
Also MP3s at 28kbit/s might not even be to your liking in quality terms. I would recommend encoding at 92kbit/s, but if you want to take the time then try different bit-rates for yourself and see what you prefer.
Music encoding is a huge topic, and there's plenty to learn about it. For example using other programs and encoders, which may give you a better result than Creative's software.

WMA as mentioned is by Microsoft (Windows Media Audio). It's basically Microsoft's answer to MP3, only it offers things like licensing which is very appealing to Online Music Stores.
Converting between compressed digital music formats (transcoding) is a bad idea, as they all use a different method to compress. The more you convert and compress the more quality you lose. It's always best to encode direct from the CD.

• Transfer recordings from Zen Mirco to

Hello. I've had my Zen Micro for about nine months now, and I've been pleased with the player overall despite it freezing up a few months back and me sending my old player back and getting it replaced.
But anyway to my question:
I've used my Zen Mirco to record some audio using the built in microphone, and now I need to get it onto my computer. When the player is plugged in, I see it in Windows Explorer and I can see the wav file that was recorded, but I'm unable to do anything with the file except delete it; I can't move it onto my computer, which is where I want it.
Is there any way to get the recorded file from the player onto my computer?
Thanks,
Billy.

hi dude, just bought my micro zen so not sure about this, but i noticed that when i copy the mp3 files and i disconnect and reconnect it, i cant see the files of my zen micro in the explorer, but i start to copy other mp3 to micro zen, all my files suddenly show up, maybe you can try that.

• Zen mirco filmware prob

My zen mirco have this filmware problem, this is the second time i am having this problem, i did update the filmware for both time but i don't know why i have this problem, i don't this problem to keep appearing, my friend doesn't seem to have this problem yet. Pls help......

If you get firmware problem very frequently, 3 or more times, I would say the player is faulty. My guess is that a faulty hard disk causes the firmware problem message to appear, although it can appear rarely through some form of hard disk corruption.
I would try reloading the firmware and formatting the player. If it happens after this, then contact Support.

• Zen Mirco Format

Hello,
I bought a new computer over the summer and I wanted to setup my zen mirco with the new computer. I decided to format the micro so that I could put new music on it and what not. I ended up deleting the firmware, so now when it loads up it says:
"Firmware Problem"
then immediately into a menu that has these options:
. Clean up
2. Format All
3. Relaod Firmware
4. Reboot
so far, I have tried each of those options, reloaded the drivers onto my computer, reloaded the software that came with the player, and downloaded a new firmware and tried reloading it onto the player.
any suggestions?
thanks!

Yes, I have tried everything from resetting to reformating and still the problem remians. I don't know what could have happened to it. It was working perfectly until this somehow happened. Has anyone else recieved this problem? Thanks.

• Creative zen 32gb question

looking at this one:
my question is this:
does this mp3 player require proprietary software to put songs on it or can i just take a folder from my computer, and put it in the music directory on the player using drag and drop
i did a search but so many "creative zen" players came up i dont know which one to even look at. seems like some can and some cant. im trying to research it now through other means but im just kind of hoping someone on here that owns one can let me know what is required.

First of all, I'm assuming that you are already clued-up on moving your CD albums onto your hard disk. You should, by the way, always create a folder for each CD/Album, and put all the tracks into that folder.
From your question, it appears that you haven't yet purchased a Zen. Your Zen comes with some programs to help you do things. In the context of your question here, you get a "Zen Media Explorer" which allows you to do the following:
. Move your CD/Album folders into your Zen.
2. Make a playlist for each of the above folders.
Then if you want to play an album in your Zen simply select a playlist and click "Play".
There are other ways of doing things, but the above strategy keeps everything tidy and easy to find (and play).
You can, for instance, create your own"mixes" (putting each into a playlist). You can of course select individual tracks, and (if you want) set "random play".
You might also find it useful to always set the sleep timer to (say) one hour - then if you forget to switch your Zen off, you won't flatten your battery. When you switch on again, you'll automatically be put into the playlist/track/position-in-track that you were in when "sleep" kicked in. This "return-to-place" also works if you deliberately switch off.
One other recommendation - always switch to "lock" when playing. In "lock" the display is switched off, so you'll get about 24 hours of audio play on one battery charge. If you don't use the lock, the extra drain by the display will shorten your battery life before you need a recharge to something between 2 and 5 hours.

• Newbie here...some Zen Micro questions/suggestio

Hi im new Okay i have some questions for y'all:
Will having only usb .0 work for a zen micro? I have a n200 and it works fine, just wondering if the micro will work on my computer too.
Yes, I recently ordered a Zen Micro. Unfortunately that was before i came to this forum, and after witnessing that massi've 08 page headphone jack thread, I'm getting very worried. Are there any people out there who are satisfied with the micro? If you have problems, don't reply with a MICRO SUX0RZ **bleep** THE MICRO. I need some feel-good stories!
And one quick final clarification about the headphone jack problems: Is the problem actually fixed in the later shipments of the zen micro? I'm pretty sure mine will be a later model since it's not going to come with a wall charger, but I haven't been able to find a definiti've answer for it. Is there anyone out there who've never had this problem? again, that stupid 08page thread
Thanks!

got my zen micro5gb as a gift, loaded this thing with everything indie... started to notice if i moved a little bit the music would cut out and it would be music distorted, without the vocal, another movement and its all back. so i figured it was bad headphones, the zen ones hurt youre ears. so i bought jvc buds $22 nyc bargain, they work great, then suddenly same thing..in and out so i got a rma and sent it , next thing i know now i have a 6 gig nice right, i charge it up and here i am sitting here the darn thing isnt being connected by my computer, i cant load music on or anything, so im figuring buy another usb. - 2.0 cord. i've already written a letter in, i dont see why there isnt 24hr help, alot of products to offer and not enough help. 2 days for an email reply, ha.. i can buy a new one in that time. -mc

• Zen Micro questions and concer

Hello, I've had my Zen Micro 5gb for about 2 /2 months now and while some of these problems have been around for a while I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone else has these problems as well. First of all I have the new firmware ..0 installed it right after buying the player. Now for my concerns,
) I've noticed that I only get about 8ish hours of playback on a full charge (which is roughly about 2 hours to go from bar to full) volume between 0 and 5 and used for periods of usually an hour at a time. Most of the songs on the player are CD quality bit rate (28 is it's) and my question is, is this normal? The quoted time is up to 2 hours battery life.
2) I have the idle shutoff time set to 5 min of inactivity and the sleep timer at 30 min. The problem that I've found and I don't know if this is how it's supposed to be, which seems strange if it is, is that when I turn on the power (and is where I want it to be so I don't adjust it at all) it shuts off after 5 minutes which I find annoying. But, I've also found that even if I move through some screens and change the song and set it back in my pocket, it still shuts off after 5 minutes, only when I adjust the volume (I still need to test this to make sure that that's what it is) does it play for the full 30 min.
3) When the Micro starts up (while not on the 4hr standby there is?), so when it goes through the full Creative and Zen Micro screens at the startup there is a glitch where the "Zen Micro" screen stays on for up to a full 0 seconds and about 5 seconds into it there is a box halfway up the 'ZEN' where the letters don't show, I don't really know how else to explain it but I'll try "drawing it".

/ |------- | \ | |
/ | | \ | / | | \ |
/____ |_______ | \| /____ |_____ | \|
M I C R O M I C R O
(It looks good writing it out, but alas the formatting doesn't seem to work posting it)
After about 5 seconds (it varies) it changes from the first to the second for about another 5 seconds. The only thing is, it does this every so often and is not consistent as to when it does it. The music starts playing while it's doing this as well. I'm also wondering if the Creative screen (without the copyright stuff) is supposed to last for a full 0 seconds like it seems to be now as that seems quite excessi've but I am not sure what the 'norm' is.
4) I've had it freeze on the "Shutting down..." screen but taking the battery out and replacing it seems to fix that, as others have discussed.
If someone could fill me in on what's "normal" or not and your own experiences with this it would be greatly appreciate. Thank you in advance.Message Edited by Guildenstern87 on -06-2005 :57 PMMessage Edited by Guildenstern87 on -06-2005 :57 PM

. The 2 hours is based on using the player playing 28kbit/s MP3s continuously. Anything you do to the player in terms of frequent skipping of tracks, higher bit-rate tracks, downloading/uploading etc. will shorten the battery life. See the FAQ post for lots on this.
2. Known bug.
3. It just seems to be some innocuous screen write bug. It doesn't seem to do any harm other than look naff.
4. Mine doesn't freeze on shutting down. Perhaps try a disk cleanup from rescue mode?

• Travel Dock Zen Micro Question

Hello everyone,
For my holiday I want to buy a set of speakers for my Zen Micro 6GB. I looked around a little bit and found a couple of speakersets. One of them is the Zen Micro traveldock. It looks great and its very clever made with all its features. But now I have some questions about this:
1. Can I charge my Zen Micro with the Travel Dock without the USB-connection, so only the DC-connector ? Because in the description at the Dutch Creatice site it`s not very clear, there they wrote down that you can charge the Zen when you connect the travel dock to a USB-device, so i`m not sure you can do it with the DC only ?
2. Is the soundquality good ? Well, everybody has something different to say about it, but in general you can say something about it. Is it bad, normal or good ? And is the volume power a little bit good ?

My Micro is playing in the TravelDock as I write this. And I can confirm that the lid does close with the Micro in place. The unit has a good sound. I've got it full volume right now. There is no deep bass, but again, these are .5 inch speakers. I will try a powered subwoofer I have with the unit later. There is enough power to fill an average size room or to enjoy the music outside. There is a switch that alters the sound field from narrow to wide. The effect is noticeable if you are listening for it. The connection between the TravelDock and the Micro is easy to make and the Micro sits very securely in the dock. The lid works as desktop stand as well and is held in place by two rubber grippers that are rather stiff and needed some coaxing to work. I will expect these will loosen with use. The documentation on Creative's website says the TravelDock doesn't include batteries, but mine did have 4 Eveready alkalines in the box.
Not too many people have seen the MicroPhoto yet, but apparently it is not exactly the same size as the Micro. There is a small rubber self adhesi've spacer included with the TravelDock. The manual says this small spacer needs to be inserted into the dock if you plug in a MicroPhoto, So, I'm guessing the MicroPhoto is a few millimeters thinner than the Micro. Is that right?

• Creative zen menu question/cracked screen

Hello
I have an unusual request.
<img alt="Cracked screen" src="http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/644/pa50006.jpg" height="600" width="800[/img]
Firstly I must say that my lovely creative zen's screen is cracked :< some guy kicked me on the side of my leg where zen was in my pocket and then I realized the screen got cracked.
The thing is, it still works quite well (despite flawly "back" button which I have to press several times to get it to work) and I keep listening to music with it, new screen costs more than an used zen so I will stick with it for some more time before upgrading to new model.
As the screen is cracked I have to navigate through the menu tbe way I remember, so the question, or request is as follows:
. I would like to know if when I'm in the main menu, if I press UP several times, will it stop on the st position in the menu or the selection will continue from the bottom towards first position again ? (like looped selection)
2. I have brightness set to 00%, would someone be so kind giving me instructions how to get to the settings/brightness and set it back to minimum 0%? Like down 5x, OK, down3x, OK, left etc.
3. I'd like also instructions how to play all the tracks, so far I remember how to play an album, It's like 3x or 4x down, OK, 3x down, OK, OK, play. Whenever I put new tracks the playlist gets updated and I can't play them like that with the play button :<.
I'd be really gratefull for the information provided.

You're SOL dude...
I've had a cracked screen for a month now and have tried everything...
-tried to return it-too late
-tried to buy a replacement screen-can't find them anywhere and they're made in singapore
-tried to use an ipod video screen-doesn't fit
-So you gotta send it back to creative-cost: ~$20.00 and no player for a few weeks
Good luck, you're taking it better than I did

• Frozen Zen Xtra - Questions re: Rescue M

I've got a 40 gb Zen Xtra that's about nine months old. Purchased in the U.S. so the warranty is over. Anyway, it got a little bit wet yesterday and is now freezing when I try to start it. I've hit the reset and now it goes into Rescue Mode when I turn it on. I've got two questions.
When I select Clean Up I'm given the option for "Disk Cleanup will be performed. Continue?". I click the check mark, but then nothing happens. How do I know if the cleanup is being performed? Is it supposed to let me know that it's currently running? I waited over half an hour and nothing happened.
I've tried rebooting a few times and it just brings me back to Rescue Mode.
When I click "Reload OS", I get the "OS will be erased. Upload it via USB. Continue?". I click the check mark and I get the Harddisk Problem icon. Does "Upload it via USB" mean that I have to have the player connected to my computer?
I guess my last resort is to "Format All" but I really don't want to have to re-load 40 gbs worth of mp3s organized in playlists. Of course, there's a good chance that the whole player is shot. Argh.

I would double check this. It was around the time of the Xtra that the warranties increased to year (3 months parts and labour, followed by 9 months parts only).

I believe it will give a scanning bar, and a percentage completion. Normally after you reboot it will then rebuild the library also. So the fact that you're getting nothing is a worry...

Yes, you erase the firmware from the player itself, connect it to the PC, then run the firmware install from the PC.
The hard disk problem error is another concern. This suggests something is awry with the player.
Whenever a device like this gets wet it's a good idea to immediately remove the battery and leave it somewhere warm and dry for several days.

brava-
The smart volume is a setting you can use so that your player will put the volume at a comfortable level for you to hear. Keep in mind that this tends to drain the power from the battery.
Yes, I have used the player while it's charging.
But I'm not sure why the .avi files won't play on your Zen :|

• [Zen Micro]Questions about the Firmw

Hello,
I have some questions about the firmware of the Zen Micro
. Can I use the Zen Micro without any Software (MediaSource?) on my PC (winXP) when im using the Firmware Creative Zen Micro *PlaysForSure/MTP Firmware 2.00.2 ? This means that i copy my Music only by drag&drop from the Explorer after my Computer has detected the Zen Micro as a Removable Disk!
2. I know that the Zen Micro has two parts with the Normal Firmware. The "Removable Disk" Part and the "Playable" Part which can only used by the Software! But what happens if my . question is right. How can i seperate this two parts?
Thanks for answers

I don't have the 2.x firmware, but I think I'm correct in saying this :
with the 2.x firmware, your Micro becomes an MTP compatible device, which can be recognized on PCs having an MTP compatible OS (operating system). For the moment, the only OS that fits the bill to my knowledge, is Win XP with Windows Media Player 0. In this combination of MTP device + MTP OS, you don't need to install other drivers, and you can do drag and drop
BUT ! The 2.x firmware doesn't make your device a "removable disc" in the traditional sense of the word. It doesn't become a file system, like a USB memory stick.
I hope I was clear enough to see the difference :-)Message Edited by fred_be9300 on 04-03-2005 02:52 AM

• Just got a new Zen Mirco, but I think there may be somthing wrong

I just picked one up today, and I love it, but I have one question.
Whenever I begin to play a song, for about the first four or fi've seconds there's a quiet but noticable high-pitched squealing sound through the headphones in the background. For the rest of the song, though, all I hear is the music. I believe this has somthing to do with the hard dri've, because I can hear it when I am uploading files to the player/ Does anybody else have this problem?
I know that there have been some problems with a squealing sound when the backlight is on, but this problem occurs even with the backlight turned off.
I've tried a few different pairs of headphones and still have the same problem. I don't hear the sound when the headphones are unplugged, so it's not the unit itself making the noise.
Firmware Version .02.05, if it matters, but I'm pretty sure it a physical issue, not a software one.
Any help would be great!Message Edited by Sportyboard on 07-08-2005 :30 PM

I experience the same thing, but not during playback but before a song gets played. The noise (very soft; I have made some experiments, and some people cannot even hear it; I myself have very keen hearing) always runs parallel to increased HD action (e.g. getting all the song info on a 50-song playlist, when I inspect the playlist).
My bet would be that some of the voltage peaks of the HD running high are induced into the line that carries the music signal for the headphone socket. In my case, the noise does not bother me because it's very shortli'ved and only happens anyway when nothing is playing (at least I can only hear it in those cases).
I could imagine though, given all the problems with power the ZM has (have a look at my site below), that there may be some Micros that exhibit this noise more intensely than others, as it must be hardware-dependent, and hardware is never EXACTLY equal (e.g. soldering) on any two devices.
Cheers,
Jan.

• Problems getting Zen Mirco to w

Hi -- I just got a Zen Micro and I think it is defecti've. I installed the battery as requested. The screen immediately lit up, with CREATIVE across the center. Then I plugged in the adaptor to the unit, then to the wall socket: nothing. No flashing icon saying it was charging. Then I tried several other sockets -- same result. I changed to the spare battery. The screen turned on again, but no luck with charging. I tried several times to switch batteries and charge in other sockets. Then the unit turned off, and now I cannot even get it to turn on and display the CREATIVE message across the screen.
Now it's the weekend and they're not answering the phone... so if anyone can offer a suggestion, I'd appreciate it.

Neilw,
I think your statement [Whether you use your battery for 5 minutes or 5 hours, as soon as recharging commences the charging cycle is initiated and another life (of the battery life span of 300 to 500 charging cycles) is used up!] is wrong.
I shall give an example about using up a charging cycle. For example, you have just charged your battery to 00%. Then, you used up 0% and charge it up to 00%. You still have not used up cycle. At 00%, you drain the battery to only 0% left. So, the total battery usage now would be 0%+90%=00%. Now charge cycle has been used up.
Some quick facts about Li-Ion battery. -It is best not to drain the battery to 0% before you charge.-Do not leave you battery charged and not use them for a long time. Some of the battery cells in the battery will go into a deep sleep. This is no good for the battery. -It is best to keep the battery charged at around 42% at about 40 degree C if you are not using the battery for a short time.-It would be good to start charging your battery when only about 20~30% for the battery is left.
