Zen MX 'random play all' problems

!Zen MX 'random play all' problemso Hello, 2 newbies here, Maz (who is typing)?and mum Wendy (whose player is having problems).
I have a Zen in an older version and I've never had many problems but my mum recently got a 6gb?Zen MX (version .00.09)?and although it was working fine before recently after an update that seemed to go wrong (I wasn't there an mum?is?unclear what exactly went wrong but we have had a major virus problem)?the 'random play all' mode has become messed up somehow. It will only play one track at a time then stops and has to be prompted to continue every time. Apparently it also randomly halfway through tracks will sometimes change the speed of play but I have not heard this so I'm not exactly sure whether this is a separate problem or already resolved.
So far we have tried using the reset button and that had no effect. Then we tried restoring the default settings and reprogramming the programmeable button to random play all and the issue reoccurs. We have also checked and 'play mode' is on shuffle as I thought it should be.
Any suggestions?
Maz & Wendy

Has the firmware on the player been updated? I would do that. <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=23&CatName=MP3+Players&s ubCatID=23&subCatName=MIDI+Keyboards&prodID=865&pr odName=ZEN+MX&bTopTwenty=&VARSET=prodfaq"]http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=23&CatName=MP3+Players&s ubCatID=23&subCatName=MIDI+Keyboards&prodID=865&pr odName=ZEN+MX&bTopTwenty=&VARSET=prodfaq:PRODFAQ_865,VARSET=CategoryID:23

• X-FI2 Random Play All Problem

HI All,
I've spotted another prob with X-FI2 whichI think may be linked to it not recognising all albums on the player. Has anyone else noticed that if you go to the DJ option and choose Random Play All, it chooses only 00 tracks (the same tracks every time) and just cycles through them. Its driving me mad, I have 4300 tracks on uploaded but its just cjhoosing those 00 to play. Its also annoying because 99.9% of the time I have my mp3 player on this play mode.
Anyone spotted this too, and can it be fixed without firmware update?
Just thought, also, does anyone know of a proper user guide for the X-FI2. I've downloaded Creative Centrale but can't find any doc with more thorough instructions in than are in the quickstart guide?
Thanks in antcipation of any assistance

Having sorted these problems, I thought I'd reply to my own posting so other Zen newbies can share.
If you update with the .0 firmware, that fixes the problem of the random play all choice only cycling through 00 tracks.
To get user manual for the X-FI2, you need to install the Creative Centrale software. This then creates a folder in your program files called Creative (C:/program files/creative). The user manual is in there.
These are probably dead basic answers to dead basic questions, but if you didn't know the answer, then it might as well be the hardest answer in the world.

• Zen Mozaic random play all question

#This has been driving me crazy. I have 458 songs on my player, but when I select random play all, the song count comes up as 335. Anyone know what is going on or how I can fix this?
On top of this, sometimes if I add like 5 sonds, the counter for all tracks will increase by 5, but the counter during random play all will increase maybe or 2.

Has the firmware on the player been updated? I would do that. <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=23&CatName=MP3+Players&s ubCatID=23&subCatName=MIDI+Keyboards&prodID=865&pr odName=ZEN+MX&bTopTwenty=&VARSET=prodfaq"]http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=23&CatName=MP3+Players&s ubCatID=23&subCatName=MIDI+Keyboards&prodID=865&pr odName=ZEN+MX&bTopTwenty=&VARSET=prodfaq:PRODFAQ_865,VARSET=CategoryID:23

• Zen Vision M: Random Play All, press FF button, becomes Album of the

OK, I choose 'Random Play All' from the DJ menu, and it does queue all the tracks. But if a track that I do not want to listen to comes up, I press the >> Fast Forward button to try to skip to the next song in the queue, but then it goes to 'Album of the Day' mode.
It does this no matter what 'Play Mode' I have the player in.
I have upgraded the firmware.
My Zen Xtra did not do this....
Any idears?
Bill

Sounds like you both need to report it as a bug. In my experience bugs mentioned here don't tend to get fixed.
Go to the support section under contact, and file a report there of the bug.
That way a ticket will get made and put in the system and sooner (most likely later) we might see a fix in the next firmware.

• Missing songs in "Random play all&qu

I have a Creative Zen (8GB) with the latest firmware and I just did a fresh reformat, uploaded 566 songs using Winamp (which I can verify in Winamp, 566 mp3s ARE on the player), and if I select random play all on the player it only plays 524 of them. I can put a playlist on the player which contains all 566 songs and they all play fine, but for some reason the random play all button won't load all the songs on the player. Any thoughts? (And no, "don't use winamp" isn't an acceptable answer, thanks).

I have one more problem now. Apparently my Zen 8GB hates certain characters in ID3 tags and replaces them with more friendly characters when files are transferred to it. This causes massi've problems because any playlists that referenced the songs with invalid letters in the tags will no longer contain those songs, and when syncing it causes problems because songs with different tags are obviously seen as different songs (even though they are the same song, one with the tags mangled).
Does anyone know of some software that can remove all the unsupported characters from the ID3 tags in my media library? That would really make life a lot easier, thanks.

• Does the iPhone support a "Random Play All" feature?

After reading the iPhone manual on-line, I did not see direct support for a "Random Play All" option.
Please tell me that this was an omission in the manual and it is directly supported by the iPhone, because this is a deal breaker for our family if it is not directly suported.

It might help if I had any idea what that feature was.
Do you mean a shuffle feature-where it randomly picks music tracks and plays them?
If so-the 3g iPhone has it.

• The shortcut button and the "random play all" m

hi everybody,
here is my question:
is it right that when i asign "random play all" to the shortcut button it even overwrites the skip forward and backward buttons...probably because it also sets the play mode to "shuffle". but then, when i asign "album of the day" to shortcut button it doesn?t change back the play mode from shuffle to normal...
strange...
does anybody experience similar issues ?
thanx
christoph

That's correct, you have to manually change it to normal play if you don't want it to shuffle. I love that feature (the shortcut)

• Zen Touch - Random play interupt

Occasionally when using random play mode around 20 minutes after starting, my Touch stops mid-song and re-boots from the intro screen. All on it's own, it starts playing from the point where I originally turned it on 20 or so minutes earlier.... same song, same volume settings, etc. After this happens, I did the disc clean-up and reboot/rebuild library, and all seems well. But it still occasionally happens. I haven't been adding music lately, so I don't think it has anything to do with fragmented files. Any help out there?
Other than this relati'vely minor problem and my inability to synch with WMP0 playlists, I love my Touch!

I don't think the Touch has a sleep timer, but it shouldn't cause it to spontaneously reboot either.
Do you have the latest firmware, or have you tried reloading the firmware?

• Vision:m random play all in genr

Hi,
I got my Vision:m yesterday. It is my first MP3 player.
It is great apart form a couple of issues.
One of these is that I would like to have a random play for everything in a certain genre. I don't think you can already do this? (maybe through playlists?)
I have sorted genres into things like Indie and Rock, 80s pop etc and would sometimes like to just listen to a certain type of music.
Does anyone know if this can be done?
If not Creative can you please think about adding this option.
Thanks

Nope, I have the player also, and this feature is not possible.
I don't use Genres though. I've got it so that the Genres act like folders on a PC, so always search for music using this, yet would be pointless for me to have a randomise based on them
They should add it though, yes.

• Zen Micro random play

...it ain't that random really is it! I quite often get tracks from the same artist playing consecuti'vely, and occasionally the same tracks pretty close to each other.
Any chance we could have a little more random in the next firmware release please?

One workaround for this is to create a playlist and use Notmad's randomise feature to mix it up a little.
Unfortunately the players haven't been that random as far back as the Nomad Jukebox , so I wouldn't hold your breath for an update on this...

• Why can't you randomly play a Playli

Zen Micro is great, but I can only get it to randomly play all music and not just a selected playlist. It makes sense that you can divide your music into different playlists, but what use is it if you can't randomly play the playlist. Maybe I am missing something obvious, but I am pretty sure I have gone through all the menus. I have the latest driver that is Napster ToGo compatible. Thanks.

Jon_mx,
I think you may be having the same problem that I am having (see my thread).
Try this:
. set the play mode to random
2. open a playlist
3. start playing with track 0
4. I think if you do this, after track 0 is finished, it will randomly select another track to play.
5. Now stop. reopen a playlist, start with a track, any track but NOT track 0.
6. You will probably find that the machine will stop after the current track is finished without starting a new one.
That is what happens to my Zen Xtra. Same goes with the "normal" play mode.
Please let me know what you find.
Thanks!

• RANDOM PLAY PROB

I usually just throw my Zen vision M on random play all. For some unknown reason, the other day, it just sto
ps.
..the little stop square pops up and it doesn't go to the next song. When I hit my short cut button which is linked to random play all...a small message comes up for a split second that says, "Queing all tracks, please wait...then it might play one, two, three, four more songs then it stops again. Looking for help to fix this...
PS/I already reset it.

• Random play on ze

<font face="Comic Sans MS" size="3">I have a zen v and am unable to find random play all so can I select a play list and random play it

In your Music Library there is a DJ listing. Click on it to find the random setting.
You can add this to your main menu via the system menu.

• Zen Vision:M Playing Opti

hello everyone
i just got my new vision:m and have some problems with it..
can anyone tell me how to play a track of an artist, and if theres just one song of this artist, switch to the next artist? is this possible?
it stresses me out, if this wont work..
thanks for answering
jep5

Do you mean to play the entire library at once? You can do this by going to 'DJ' in the Music Library menu and selecting 'Random Play All', or selecting a track from 'All Tracks' (which queues all the tracks on the player at the same time).
If you want a specific selection of artists in a specific order, do the following:
- clear the 'Selected' list by going to 'Now Playing', pressing the bottom-right button, selecting 'Remove...' and then selecting 'Remove All' from the menu
- go back to the Music Library menu and select 'Artists'
- highlight the artist you want to play first, press the bottom-right button again and select 'Add to Selected...' (You can set your shortcut button to do this if you wish)
- do this for all the artists you want to play, in the order you want them played
- go back to 'Now Playing' and the list of tracks will be available to play
- set the 'Play Mode' to 'Normal' to play the tracks in order, or 'Shuffle' to play them in a random order
You can then save this list as a playlist by selecting 'Save as Playlist' after pressing the bottom-right button in 'Now Playing'.

• Zen Micro Random Algorithm. What is

I think the biggest thing with this mp3 player you need is patience. I think everyone's had something go wrong, and few have had it work flawlessly on the first time. That said;
What is the deal with the DJ- Random Play all function. My micro seems to switch between Guster and Dave Matthews Band and then barley sample other songs (granted they're both amazing ). So my question is in two parts. How does random work? Is it by indvidual file, or by album or Artist. Also, I'd love to, for my own amusment, to see the algorithm that the micro uses to choose a "random" track.
-tim

Someone linked with the development team posted a while back on the Nomadness.net forums that the random seed was generated from the clock (which is quite common in this type of device). I'm guessing that the seed is still not very varied, hence you can get some repetition of artists, although this might be down to some coincidence.
The only way I found of getting a truly random queue was to use Notmad's playlist randomise function.
