Zen Nano + OverDrive Media Audio Bo

. I've already chugged through both the FAQ on this site regarding posting as well as read through all appropriate/similar problems to what I am currently experienceing, however, none of what has been previously discussed resolves my problem, therefore, I am posting my issue.
2. I purchased the Zen Nano Plus specifically and deliberately to listen to audiobooks from OverDri've and NetLibrary. Running into a brick wall with OD however have not yet tried NetLib. I don't expect NetLib to be much different since Win Media player still has to be used to copy the files over to the player.
3. The Zen xfers music as it should either using the nanny/bloatware from the Zen CD or Win Explorer. But when it comes to xferring audiobooks, it's a no go. I am using a Win2k SP3 box with Windows Media Explorer 9 because 0 and above only works on XP. The Overdri've books work in both Win Media as well as the OverDri've Console. However, Win Media Player will absolutely not transfer any audiobooks. Instead it generates the wonderful error that reads as follows:
"Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error."
There are 2 choices. Close or Web Help.
Clicking on Web Help leads you to a pg on Microcrap's website, which is, by and large, completely and irrevocably useless because the page that it was apparently supposed to default to resolve the error reads as follows:
"You've encountered error message C00DCD while using Windows Media Player. Additional information is not currently available for this error."
Every suggestion I have read regarding similar problems to mine encourages the use of Win Media Player so that the nannywear/DRM licensing can be properly transferred from source to audiobook player. And I have been using nothing but the Win Media Player, which, true to form and what I have completely expected given it is a Microcrap product, has been spectacularly worthless.
Does anyone want to even attempt to troubleshoot this issue or shall I just return the Zen and give up on the expectation of successfully xferring audiobooks to an mp3 player.Message Edited by ZenWarrior on 09-6-2006 05:09 PM

<i>Why not try NetLibrary? First try an audiobook that is under 200MB. I use the free Real Player (www.real.com) to download most of my audiobooks and it works well for all sizes of NetLibrary Books. You still have to have Windows Media Player downloaded to take care of the licensing.</i>
I just determined I can't use NetLibrary because my home library doesn't use the audiobook services. So nothing in the collection is available. And RP is not compatible with Overdri've audio books. I attempt to open a title with RP, RP bitches about needing a software update to play the clip, it then connects to the Net, generates a no-software-update-necessary message and promptly doesn't play the clip because it does not recognize the Overdri've .odm file extension.
For the record, there does not seem to be anyone anywhere who has the resolution to this problem. I've looked far and wide all over the net and no one has a resolution. Not even the [url="http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/community/newsgroups/WindowsMedia/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsmedia.play er&tid=f0b3ebdd-6486-4bfd-b76e-3076062a38c&cat=en-us-wma-nwsgrps&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=&p=">Micro$oft WMP newgroup[/url] itself.
As to checking all pc requirements, etc., I have already gone through the routine and then some. I am above average tech savvy and used to work in I. T. so this problem is not something I did not have clue one as to how to troubleshoot. Posting to this forum was not even a consideration until I had exhausted my own troubleshooting routine. The problem is that in my experience, when an issue on this level arises, I have yet to find a resolution to it from any public forums on the net b/c if I can't determine a resolution, then no one else can either. I strongly suspect this is another example of that axiom.
End result, I can't use the Zen Nano Plus to listen to Overdri've audiobooks because the DRM has the content locked down and refuses to allow it to transfer to the player despite all the DRM bull**bleep** licensing hoops the user has to jump through. This is just another glaring example of how DRM and its cousin the DMCA retard technological progress. Anyone reading this thread should familiarize himself with his U.S. Code Title 7, ?07 rights and get involved with Digital Consumer.org. If the very users of the content don't give a **bleep** enough to stop these corps from taking over, it's not a very far stretch to state that they will end up charging you, the consumer, for every copy you own of anything digital. That means for the copy you want to read on your desktop pc in RP or WMP, cha ching. The copy you want to play on your mp3 player, cha ching. The copy you want to burn to a CD/DVD, cha ching. Get educated. Get involved. Or kiss your digital rights and all the technological innovations that come down the pike goodbye.Message Edited by ZenWarrior on 09-7-2006 :4 AM

Have tried to download drivers and software for Zen Micro. When I try to run it though, it does not install because it says that I do not have device connected. Have erased everything off of Zen Micro, but have not reformatted. When I attach Zen Micro to PC, Zen Micro displays "booted" & PC displays "Zen Micro" for a second or two, then switches to "MTP Device"?. Do I need to erase everything from the Zen Nano Plus first?2. What do you think my next step should be?Thx???

I'm having exactly the same problem.
I have just installed the?Zen Nano Series Media Explorer on Vista. It is the latest version downloaded from the Creative website. There is definitely no Custom Sort button. I have also installed the latest version of the?firmware (.4.03e), which is supposed to improve the player's compatibility with?Vista.
Previously I was using the same Zen?Nano Plus player on an XP computer with an older version of the Media Explorer software. That version had Custom Sort and it always worked perfectly. I'm surprised there haven't been more posts about this, as it's a very useful function and I shall miss it'sgreatly if I can't get it to work on this new Vista?computer.
Isn't it a bit'sabsurd that?the newest version of the software?has?less functions than an older version?

  • Zen Nano organizat

I have recently bought a Zen Nano, and I love it. I love it's size, its color, and it's layout. When I got it home for the first time, I installed MediaSource, and this Zen Nano Plus Media Explorer. I also use Musicmatch to purchase and exchange DRM music on it. I have a few albums on it. My problem is that it is not organized by Artist, then Album, then song... It seems as though its organized by just the track. To fix this I tried putting all my music into folders entitled their artist name, then album. Now it skips directly to the album folder. I would like to know how to organize music so I can get to it by Artist, then Album, then Song. If possible. If not then why would they waste space with a GB dri've in it.

The flash memory players work on folders and filenames not tag info. The only tag displayed is the title tag.
Any folders without music files in are ignored. A workaround I suggested for someone else was to create a dummy file - make a? one second recording of nothing, convert it to an mp3 file then put a copy of it in each Artist folder. Then you should be able to use the Skip Folder function to pass through the Artist folder to the enclosed Album folders.
Hope it works as I haven't tried it myself.

When you connect your player it appears in the left pane of MediaSource. Click on it and a SmartFit button appears at the top - default is Off. If you click on Settings you can also set up the options for SmartFit i.e. enable/disable it and change bit-rate.
You can also use SmartFit in Zen Nano Plus Media Explorer which appears under My Computer when your player is connected.
WMP has a similar function when you Sync files to the player - select the Sync tab and the Settings icon on the right-hand side. On the Quality page are the settings for varying the bit-rate when you sync.

  • Zen Nano Plus connection problems - SOLVED (1/2/06)

I recently bought the Nano Plus. On first installation everything worked fine. I decided to upgrade to the latest drivers and firmware via downloads from the Creative site. At some point during the firmware upgrade, everything seemed to hang. Eventually I had to halt the process, disconnect the player and reboot.
When I plugged the player back in, it is detected as a USB Mass Storage Device, but Windows Explorer and the Zen Nano Plus Media Explorer both claim that the device is not connected.
Here's what I have done so far:
)Uninstalled all drivers and Creative software, rebooted, reinstalled drivers/software, rebooted. When plugging the player in, a brief window pops up saying Zen Nano Plus has been detected. This is followed by USB Mass Storage Device being detected (this window stays up a lot longer, sometimes more than 5-0 minutes before disappearing).
2)Another uninstall/reinstall, but this time with a registry cleanup in between. Same result.
3)Tried installing installation cd on partner's laptop and plugging in the player. Absolutely everything works fine. So it's not my player. There must be something I still need to do on my desktop to get everything to work again.
4)Have also tried plugging into every USB outlet on the desktop. No change.
    My system:
    Windows XP (sp 2)
    3.2 GHz
    Intel 865 chipset
    2 GB RAM
My Zen Nano Plus is currently running .0.03 firmware (latest).
On this desktop I am running the latest drivers (Creative Mass Storage Drivers .07.00.250)
When the player is plugged in, device manager shows no problems. Under Disk Dri'ves, Creative Zen Nano Plus USB Device is listed (and says the driver is from Microsoft, 7//0, version 5..2535.0). Under USB, USB Mass Storage Device is listed (and says the driver is from Microsoft, 7//0, version 5..2600.0).
I have tried manually updating these drivers to anything listed in the Creative folders upon installation, but it does not detect anything. When I check the drivers listed on the laptop that works with the player, these same driver details show up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I certainly would hate to only use my partner's laptop every time I want to update my music. I am also frustrated and puzzled as to why my player first worked on my desktop and now doesn't.Message Edited by lcvdw on 0-03-2006 2: AMMessage Edited by lcvdw on 0-03-2006 2:2 AM

lcvdw wrote:Can you tell me what I am supposed to see if it is connected properly?
With your player connected and View, Devices by Connection selected in Device Manager navigate through as follows:
Advanced Config and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
    ->Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
    -->PCI Bus
You should then see a series of USB Host Controllers that you will have to click through in turn to find the one your player is connected to.
Underneath each controller should be a USB Hub, and then devices are listed beneath the hubs.
For my N200 I have USB Mass Storage Device, Creative MuVo N200 USB Device then Generic Volume.
Your entry should be similar but with Zen Nano Plus instead of N200.
While you're there, right-click on the entry for the hub attached to your player and select Properties. On the Power tab it will show how much current the port can supply and in the Attached Devices list it will show how much power the player needs. In my case the hub supplies 500mA and the player needs 00mA.

  • I downloaded audio books from overdrive media and my ipod nano 6th generation showed it was transferring why can't I find the audio books on my ipod?

I downloaded audio books from overdrive media and my ipod nano 6th generation showed it was transferring and now I can't find it on my Ipod where would it be?

The problem may have been in how you transfered it.  You didn't go into much detail.  Just be sure to follow the steps in the tutorial below.  Note Paragraph 5.
Many libraries worldwide now use Overdrive Media Console, which comes in Mac an Windows versions http://www.overdrive.com/Software/omc .  Some find the mobile device transfer process confusing.  To load or delete a WMA or MP3 (Macs can only download MP3 books) audiobook onto an Apple mobile device see the "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" video in the guides at Step 7, then do the following.
    1. For Windows versions, you must first do a security update of Windows Media Player (even though you won't be using it) using Internet Explorer at http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/indivsite .
    2.  Open iTunes, plug the mobile device into the computer USB port and open the Overdrive Media Console.
    3. Highlight the mobile device in the left hand menu of iTunes and insure the "Manually manage music and videos" box is checked in the Summary Tab. If the mobile device storage is full, transfering will delete that portion of music necessary for the ebook.
    4. Highlight the book you want to transfer in the Overdrive Media Console and click the Transfer Button.   A window opens permitting you to click the boxes for parts of the book you wish to transfer.
    5. After the book has been transfered, when you click the disclosure triangle (arrow) to the left of the iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes, MP3 books will show up under the Music subsection and WMA books will show up in the Books subsection.  Once the mobile device is disconnected from iTunes, MP3 books will show up in the Songs list of the mobile device and WMA books will show up in the Books list.
    6. To remove a book from a mobile device plug the device into the USB port and open iTunes. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of your iPod, iPhone, or iPad in the Device section of the left hand menu of iTunes so that you can see the device’s subcontents. For an MP3 book select the Music subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.  For a WMA book, select the Book subsection, right click on the book and choose Delete.
    7. The Overdrive Media Console Guided Tour (videos) is at http://www.overdrive.com/Solutions/Libraries/tour/MenuWelcome.html .  The "Portable Devices" and "How to Transfer to a Portable Device" videos are there.
    8. To find a nearby library for ebooks search http://search.overdrive.com .  You can download the software, search for books and see tutorials without an account at the website of any library that uses Overdrive, however, you need a library card to download books.  At this library site, for example, the software and guided tour are at the bottom of the left hand menu.

  • Zen Nano 1GB (not plus) not playing DRM audio bo

Okay. So I've read very similar problems here, but none quite like mine. I've read through my manual (actually, I only have the downloaded manuals, and there doesn't seem to be one for a Zen Nano GB... It's not a Plus and it's not a Nano 52MB).
My whole reason for purchasing my Nano was b/c it can play DRM audio files & I want to listen to audio book downloads.
In any case, I know not to drop and drag my DRM files, that won't work.
I got a (refurbished, works fine) Zen Nano GB a few weeks go. If I drag and drop regular mp3 or WMA audio files, they work fine. If I sync regular song files with WMP, they work fine.
It's the DRM files I'm having problems with. I tried sync-ing with WMP , (after opening the DRM file and obtaining the license (these are audio books from NetLibrary.com, and I've followed their instructions as well as those for the Nano). Once I've obtained the license, I sync. The audio book appears on the Nano, but will not play.
I tried updating (or, perhaps it was downgrading) the firmware, and then used WMP 9 to sync, and managed to get one audio book to play. I thought I was ready to go. It was awesome. The whole book played and I enjoyed it.... but... once I finished the book, and re-synced and tried to add a new book.... nothing.
I've re-installed various versions of firmware, tried on WMP and WMP 9 AND tried using Creative's own software to sync (after opening the files in WMP and obtaining the license)... Nothing. Lots of wasted time, tho.
I'm not quite a newbie with mp3 players or computers, but I am capable of "missing" something.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide & please let me know if I forgot anything specific that could aid in any solutions,
    MomLikesMusic (and audio books!)

To "downgrade" firmware (I don't have any idea if that's what it's really called, it's certainly not an upgrade!):
Through another posting on this message board, I found a link to this site:
    http://dapjukebox.altervista.org/mod...ownload&cid=85
which has other firmware versions available (some are still on the Creative downloads page as well, but the oldest ones are not). The site seems to be in Italian (?).
I downloaded and saved (and virus-scanned) the firmware of _0_02.
Then, I followed the installation instructions from another firmware download from Creative:
"To install this firmware, do the following:
    1. Download the [_0_02] file into your local hard disk.
    2. Make sure your player is connected to your computer.
    3. Double-click the downloaded file.
    4. If you are prompted to reset your player, click OK.
    5. If the Find New Hardware dialog box appears on the computer screen, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the wizard.
    6. When the firmware download dialog box appears, click Start and follow the instructions on the screen."
Because I had nothing on my player, I didn't have anything to lose, data-wise. And it worked. One of these days I may try to upgraded the firmware to see if I can still transfer...
I saved a few other firmware downloads (updates) to try in the future -- rather than go hunting for them again.
Please note, the Nano I have isn't listed in the Creative products -- the one I have says Creative Zen Nano GB on it; no where can I find such a thing. Since it's a factory refirbished model I bought off e-bay, I suspected older firmware may work on it... If you have a newer model, it may not work. I'm not an expert (this whole MP3 stuff still boggles my 37-year-old mind sometimes), so be careful what you do to your player!
    Good luck,
    ~MomLikesMusic
