Zen Nano Plus - Connection Problems and Firmware Upgrade probl

Like many others posting on this forum, for a while I had problems trying to get my GB Zen Nano Plus to be recognized by the .0.03 Firmware Update software.
I eventually got it by doing this:
While the Firmware Update software was "Searching" for a device, I kept on unplugging and plugging in the Zen Nano Plus from the USB cable while holding down the Play button, unti it "caught". I tried this since I noticed it would initially see the unit saying "A device has been detected in recovery mode...", but then throw the unit into "non-recovery" mode and hence force the Firmware Update software to keep on searching.
Anyhoo, after it did finally "catch" it (after about 0 times unplugging/plugging while holding the Play button down), it showed my firmware as .03.02, and so I did the upgrade to .0.03. The upgrade said "Complete". I then take the unit off of USB, and put my battery back in. and. uhm. well. Now it won't turn on at all. *sigh*
So there I go again in the "unplug-plug" loop on trying to get the older .03.02. Finally caught after about 30 times (yes my hands are tired). And after downgrading to .03.02, putting the battery back in, the unit turns on fine.. WHEW.
So, beware to everyone. Not sure if I'd trust the .0.03 Firmware. Doesnt seem to work on my Zen Nano Plus, and I JUST bought the thing from Circuit City about a week ago.
And for those of you having problems getting the Firmware Upgrade to work.. try my (tiring) method.
I tried this on my Dell D600 laptop (actually used the USB ports on the docking station).

With your player connected and View, Devices by Connection selected in Device Manager navigate through as follows:
Advanced Config and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
->Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
-->PCI Bus
You should then see a series of USB Host Controllers that you will have to click through in turn to find the one your player is connected to.
Underneath each controller should be a USB Hub, and then devices are listed beneath the hubs.
For my N200 I have USB Mass Storage Device, Creative MuVo N200 USB Device then Generic Volume.
Your entry should be similar but with Zen Nano Plus instead of N200.
While you're there, right-click on the entry for the hub attached to your player and select Properties. On the Power tab it will show how much current the port can supply and in the Attached Devices list it will show how much power the player needs. In my case the hub supplies 500mA and the player needs 00mA.

• Zen Nano Plus connection problems - SOLVED (1/2/06)

I recently bought the Nano Plus. On first installation everything worked fine. I decided to upgrade to the latest drivers and firmware via downloads from the Creative site. At some point during the firmware upgrade, everything seemed to hang. Eventually I had to halt the process, disconnect the player and reboot.
When I plugged the player back in, it is detected as a USB Mass Storage Device, but Windows Explorer and the Zen Nano Plus Media Explorer both claim that the device is not connected.
Here's what I have done so far:
)Uninstalled all drivers and Creative software, rebooted, reinstalled drivers/software, rebooted. When plugging the player in, a brief window pops up saying Zen Nano Plus has been detected. This is followed by USB Mass Storage Device being detected (this window stays up a lot longer, sometimes more than 5-0 minutes before disappearing).
2)Another uninstall/reinstall, but this time with a registry cleanup in between. Same result.
3)Tried installing installation cd on partner's laptop and plugging in the player. Absolutely everything works fine. So it's not my player. There must be something I still need to do on my desktop to get everything to work again.
4)Have also tried plugging into every USB outlet on the desktop. No change.
My system:
Windows XP (sp 2)
3.2 GHz
Intel 865 chipset
2 GB RAM
My Zen Nano Plus is currently running .0.03 firmware (latest).
On this desktop I am running the latest drivers (Creative Mass Storage Drivers .07.00.250)
When the player is plugged in, device manager shows no problems. Under Disk Dri'ves, Creative Zen Nano Plus USB Device is listed (and says the driver is from Microsoft, 7//0, version 5..2535.0). Under USB, USB Mass Storage Device is listed (and says the driver is from Microsoft, 7//0, version 5..2600.0).
I have tried manually updating these drivers to anything listed in the Creative folders upon installation, but it does not detect anything. When I check the drivers listed on the laptop that works with the player, these same driver details show up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I certainly would hate to only use my partner's laptop every time I want to update my music. I am also frustrated and puzzled as to why my player first worked on my desktop and now doesn't.Message Edited by lcvdw on 0-03-2006 2: AMMessage Edited by lcvdw on 0-03-2006 2:2 AM

• Zen Nano Plus Connection Probl

(2)Zen Nano Pluses. Both using firmware .0.03. One Red, one Black (Click and Clack always want to know what color car they are diagnosing...)
(2) Computers, both XP SP2 with all updates; one called Dad's, one called W's.
One Zen (for ID, the red one) has been used on Dad's computer without issues for about 3 weeks.
One Zen, new and color Black, works on Dad's computer, but not on W's computer. W's computer will not properly recognize either the new Nano (the black one) or mine (the Red one), in either Creative MEdia SOurce, or Zen Explorer, or Windows explorer.
First, I have read the FAQ's. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Nano software. When I use PB's check odd things appear:
PB's check:
With your player connected and View, Devices by Connection selected in Device Manager navigate through as follows:
Advanced Config and Power Interface (ACPI) PC
->Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
-->PCI Bus
You should then see a series of USB Host Controllers that you will have to click through in turn to find the one your player is connected to.

What appears on Dad's computer, with either Nano, is USB Enhanced Host Controler, USB Root Hub, Generic USB Hub, USB Mass Storage Device, Creative Zen Nano Plus USB Device, Generic Volume. Again, either Nano works on Dad's computer.
On W's computer, after just having reinstalled the new mass driver, it is USB2 Enhanced Host Controller, USB Root Hub, USB Mass Storage Device, Disk Dri've. On restart from that, it reads Creative Nano Plus USB Device, with no "volume" underneath it, and the oddball icon is not there. I think the oddball icon is associated with the "Disk Dri've". Once it read under Creative ZEn Nano Plus, "Unknown Device". Also, when I attach a Nano to W's computer, it first seems to see the Nano in the New Device Found message, THEN while it is still attached, it says in another New DEvice Found mesage that it has found a Disk Dri've. It also shows some oddball icon I can't decipher, right next to the "safely remove Hardware" icon. The oddball icon does not appear on Dad's computer.
Any ideas?

NEWS!!!
Actually, we have 3 Zen Nano Pluses. Two (the black and the red) have .0.03 firmware. I have never connected the black or the red to W's computer and have it connect properly. In fact, I had just tried (again) to connect the black, it failed, I re-booted. Then, I connected the blue, with the old firmware, and it CONNECTED. I could see it in WIndows explorer as dri've F:, which never happened with either the red or the black with .0.03 firmware.
So, now what?

• Error Message when Trying to Rip to Zen Nano Plus

I use Zen Nano Plus Media Explorer and I get this message:
"Unable to lead database component. The program will now exit."
I can't figure out what is missing in order to correct the problem. Can anyone help me?
I use Windows XP Home on my HP Laptop.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

• Zen Nano Plus Co

Hi Support,
My Zen Nano Plus, the wordings and the serial number came off, how do i go about to change the cover? The rest of the Mp3 is working perfectly fine.
I called the technical helpdesk, they told me i need to change the whole player, i was so shocked.
Please advise further.

Changing the covers on the player may involve you actually breaking the player. I wouldn't recommend it as it also isn't screwed together, so you'd find it difficult to put it back together, if you didn't break anything taking it off.
My serial number has also wiped off, inc. all the writing on the back of the player. As long as you've got the serial number written down (it's also on the packaging as well if you still got that).
But as customer support said, to change the cover you'd need to buy a new player.

• Creative Zen Nano Plus Firmware Problem, AGAIN! (PeeBee HEL

Hi all,
I am new here and have read all the posts and FAQ's but couldn't solve my problem. Actually there is a post http://forums.creative.com/creativel...d=68923#M07024 which tells exactly my problem. Have tried the solution but didn't solve it.
So I am here asking again.
I bought a zen nano plus GB and downloaded the latest firmware(ZenNanoPlus_PCFW_LF__0_03.exe) and the latest mass storage driver (MStorage_PCDRV_LB__07_00_250.exe). When I put the player in recovery mode as the firmware is detecting devices the player takes it self out of recovery mode and back in mass storage mode how do i stop it from down that?
I am trying to update it because my player doesn't play wma files :angry:I have tried PeeBee's solution but it didn't work. I have taken the battery out, reconnected it and it is recognized in recovery mode. I run the firmware and the computer plays a sound, the icon of connection appears in the nano's lcd and it is out of recovery mode. Then firmware program tells me that the 'device state is not set' and after that the message 'put into recovery mode before updating firmware' Aaaaaarrrrrghhhh!
I'm also running windows XP SP2
Can anyone help me?
Thank you in advance

Hello-
I had a similar situation develop. Did your error message say, "Media state not initialized?" Here is what the creative support site says:
If you receive a message "Media State is not initialized ..." while updating firmware for a MuVo or Zen Nano Plus player, it will be necessary to install the Player Recovery Device driver and then update the firmware.
. Download the latest driver if you have not done so. You can download it from http://us.creative.com/support/downloads, and file name is MStorage_PCDRV_LB__07_00_250.exe.
2. Install the latest driver by double clicking on the file name.
3. Unplug the player from a computer if it is plugged.
4. Remove the battery from the player (except Zen Zeeon which has a built-in battery).
5. Press and hold the Play button while connecting the player to the USB port.
6. Continue to hold the Play button for about 0 seconds after connecting your player is connected to the USB port.
7. Keep on holding the Play button till Windows displays the Find New Hardware dialog box.
8. If this is the first time a player is installed as Player Recovery Device, Windows will find a Player Recovery Device (or USB Device), and prompt you for drivers. Click on No, and select "Do not search. I will choose the driver to install". Windows will install the drivers automatically.
9. Double click on the latest firmware upgrade file that you have downloaded previously, and follow the instructions on the screen.
0. Format the player if you are prompted to do so.
It is recommended that you stop your player properly before physically disconnect it from your PC.
To stop your player in Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows ME
Click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Taskbar, click Safely remove USB mass Storage device, and disconnect your play when you are prompted to do so.
To stop your player in Windows 98SE
Make sure that the icon below appears on the LCD screen again for at least fi've seconds before disconnecting your player.
Now, I did all of the above and still got the error. What solved the problem finally was to connect (using the above method - remove the battery - hold the switch, etc) to a DIFFERENT USB port. Then all worked well, and the firmware transferred. Don't ask me how or why.
Good luck.

Try reloading the firmware for your Nano Plus - that sorts out most problems with these players. Go to Support, Downloads and choose MP3 Players, Zen, Nano Plus. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully.

I went ahead and updated it anyway. One little thing I noticed was now the volume only goes up to 25 like my Zen Touch instead of 40 or whatever that it did before. Same loudness, different numbers only. Other than that, I have not noticed anything different, but it seemed to work OK scrolling through a song with the old firmware. I did not, obviously, do a detailed comparison.

• Problems running creative zen nano plus and nomad muvo on same compu

We have 2 nomad muvo mp3 players and now a zen nano plus .Have had constant problems with the media organiser .
Installed zen nano plus and selected enable smart fit to get maximum amount of songs and it worked fine but as soon as we tried to install software for the 2 nomad players it would not work smart fit for any of them.
Uninstalled everything and got the zen software in and it was running ok but then seemed to have problems and although smart fit was enabled it just copied files as the original mp3.
It then fatally crashed yesterday and I am awaiting a replacement as I had only had it for 2 days.
Is it possible to run all 3 and to be able to use smart fit on all 3 players or am I better off having just one working and using the file converter for the other 2.

Make sure that you have installed the MediaSource plugin for MuVo in order to get SmartFit You have to access SmartFit via the MuVo node of the Sources window in MediaSource. You won't see SmartFit if you access your MuVo via the My Computer node of the Sources window in MediaSource..
Here is what you should do to get the latest MediaSource software:
- Download and install the latest Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 from your product download site.
- (Depending on your firmware)
Download and install the latest Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.9 for Creative MediaSource from your product download site.
or:
Download and install the latest Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices (version .00.8) from your product download site.
- Download and install the latest Creative MuVo plugin .0.05 for Creative MediaSource from your product download site.
- Download and install the latest Creative MediaSource Plugin for CD Burner 3.0.8 from your product download site.

• Zen Nano PLUS - Firmware Broke My Ze

Please help me .
I have read through countless threads here looking for the answer on what to do when...
...your Zen Nano Plus is passed warranty, you install the latest firmware, and your player is no longer readable by your USB ports.
Before I tried upgrading the firmware it would detect it as what it was -- a Zen Nano Plus. Now, however, I plug it in and I don't even get a notification that Windows detects it even so much as a generic device.
Everyone says: Revert back to an older version of firmware.
Question: HOW DO I ACCOMPLISH THIS WHEN ) I CAN'T TURN MY PLAYER ON AND 2) IT IS NOT BEING READ WHEN I PLUG IT IN?
Sorry about the caps, but I feel Creative is about to let me down after all these years. Did I waste money on this thing or is there an actual solution that works?
My friend's dad had this exact same problem. He took it back and exchanged it for another Zen Nano Plus and it did the same thing agan.
Thanks in advance.
PS - Thanks to Creative for being acti've in these forums and trying to help their customers who have given Creative their hard earned money that they earned working at a job.

IT WORKED!!
PeeBee you are the man for your post in this thread:
http://forums.creative.com/creativel...d=279272#M6263
All this is Creative's doing, though, for their lackluster support for their own product. In one thread they specifically say Zen Nano Plus has no recovery mode. Why does it take non-Creative staff such as yourself to call them out and help with these issues? My friend's dad had to take time out of his day to dri've back to Best Buy to exchange it (TWICE). If only Creative would administer care in their own product support then threads centered around Creative's MP3 players being beat down by their own firmware wouldn't have over a thousand thread views each by people looking for retribution for a piece of junk they think they wasted their money on.
Thank you, PeeBee. I, on the other hand, am investing in Apple next time due to lost faith, faith that has been religiously stood by since the beginning days of Dr. Sbaitso. If this thread gets deleted rather than replied to by a mod, admin, or Creative staff member then it means I'm right.

• Zen Nano PLus dead after firmware upd

I wanted to update the firmware of my Zen Nano PLus, so I got the correct file off the creative site. I connected my mp3-player and executed the firmware update file. Everything went as it should do. It brought up a pop-up window of windows asking to search for new Hardware. I accidently closed it. Then the whole firmware updating process stopped. I closed the window of the updating process and tried to restart the firmware update file. I didn't work because the player wasn't even found by the computer. The bad thing about it is, that I cant do anything with my player since the computer cant even talk to it. I cant turn my player on/off: it is pretty much dead. No connection to computer status diagram appears, nothing. I tried the rescue tool of creti've, it didn't find the player either.
Any Ideas what can help?

Go to Creative.com and click the Support link. Look for the firmware driver for your Zen Nano and follow the directions. I had to do this to fix my Zen Nano Plus, because it had the exact same problem that yours had.
Good luck!

• Zen Nano Plus and N200- the sa

Yesterday I ordered a N200... or a Nano Plus, actually i don't know since the title said Zen Nano Plus, but the pictures and text said N200. Of course I asked support which I was going to get when I ordered and in their reply they said they are the same but with different name... so I don't really know what i'll get tomorrow, but then I guess it won't matter if they are the same with different name... But are they really the same?

Hello,
Just so you don't make a mistake, the 200 and the Zen Nano Plus were different for me. Both I bought were GB but the software was different on the N-200. I was told NOT to load the N-200 on the Zen Nano Plus. I also bought Notmad software and they said that the ZenNanoPlus would be supported soon.
I mistakenly thought I had to upgrade the firmware to get Audible compatibility. I did not. It was Audible ready out of the box. It was .00.02 from the factory. I got 2 different Creative support people telling me 2 different things...including how to upgrade the firmware with N200. One support said DO NOT do it.
Finally I got someone who said it was audible ready as it is. I tried it and it worked perfectly. So...just check. I am not sure who was right. All I know is I blew one up once trying to upgrade and I am real cautious now. At this time, I would not trade the Zen Nano Plus for anything......except perhaps for a copy of the new firmware for the Zen Touch ! Had to get that in.
