Zen Nano Plus Price Drop; Are they dumping these due to problems? Worth buyi

The GB Nano Plus is only $70; $60 for GB Nano. This is on Creative's own website as well as Amazon.com
http://us.creative.com/shop/shopcategory.asp?category=23
The specs are everything I want in a device for running / mtn biking / hiking. There's only one thing that keeps me from hitting "Buy": I get the feeling that creative is dumping this whole line due to problems (hence the huge price drop recently).
Is it safe to buy this thing? Is creative responsi've to warranty requests? What's the deal with only 90 days of service on a -year warranty?
As a current owner, would you jump on this player at it's current price point or tell me to RUN AWAY due to the problems it has?

There's no problems. There's been a drop in flash memory prices so they can sell them cheaper. Additionally they are streamlining their products so they are trying to sell their old stuff and make way for newer players. Two new flash players are expected later this month.

Maybe it's because I'm seeing a biased sample of owners? If you are happy with your product, maybe you are less likely to come to these forums and less likely to post a review on Amazon?
On Amazon, about /5 of the reviews were -star due to mechanical problems (battery door, won't turn on, turns off after 5 seconds, other problems...)
On this website, about 50% of the posts are about problems. But I guess forums tend to be the place for that...
So, do you actually own one of these and has it been good to you? If you read too many forum posts it can really scare you away from almost any MP3 playing product...

  • Zen Nano Plus - Dead after 20 minu

Just received my player this morning. Connected and transferred a couple of albums via windows explorer. Disconnected and had a listen, sound was ok. Reconnected to add some more music. Paste operation froze windows explorer, safely remove hardware button did nothing and the only option was a hard reset. Now player wont switch on at all, not even a logo screen and pc doesn't recognize it so cannot reflash the firmware. Most disappointing.

Thanks for the tips shellshock. I spent quite some time yesterday trying to bring the player back to life to no avail, so its now winging its way back to Amazon.
    Basically it went something like:
: 8am. Grab parcel from postman and unwrap excitedly
2: Plug player into spare usb port, my 64 bit OS recognised it straight away as a 'Zen Nano Plus' so no additional driver install necessary which is just as well because there doesn't seem to be one for 64 bit versions of Windows
3: Open windows explorer and copy two folders across to player as with any UMS device (Supertramp and Erik Satie no less)
4: Unplug player, have a listen for a few minutes and farmiliarise with the menu operations and manual
5: Reconnect player to PC, which again recognizes it correctly
6: Attempt to copy and paste a further folder of mp3's to the player using windows explorer at which point onimously the hourglass mouse cursor indicates work in progress without any sign of a progress bar appearing to indicate files in transit (the player does however display a data transfer in progress animation
7: After a couple of minutes ctl-alt-del clearly indicates windows explorer (and hence the data transfer operation) have stopped responding (my pc it should be noted has a respectable spec, was built last summer is not crash prone for no reason)
8: Bollocks says I, this is not quite going to plan. Forcing the process closed via task manager and attempting to use the 'safely remove hardware' function in the system tray locks the computer up totally forcing a hard reset
9: The Nano in the meantime has stopped displaying the data transfer animation so I unplug it from the PC and power it down thinking 'oh well, hardware is known to crash occassionally, i'll need to recopy the files after a reboot no doubt'. Hah, I should be so lucky.
0: Nano now refuses to start full stop. Not even a logo. Removing and replacing batteries minutes later as recommended has no effect, holding down the power button for over a minute has no effect, different batteries have no effect
: The PC now seems to think the dead Nano is a 'STMP3500' (i'm guessing this is the chipset used by the player) and furthermore wants drivers to match. Downloading latest drivers from Creative is useless as they are only 32 bit and will not work with Windows XP 64bit, so the PC is now having none of the dead Nano
2: Attemping to activate the emergency reset by attaching the Nano to a USB port (various ports tried) whilst holding down the power button for 20 seconds or so (several times) proves futile as all my PC now wants is drivers for a goddam 'STMP3500'!
3: Latest firmware from Creative does run ok but totally fails to find the player
4: 3pm. Player is unceremoniously re-wrapped with curses into its packaging and marched to the post office for despatch to Amazon's returns department for a refund
My guess is that the failed data transfer managed to wipe or corrupt the player firmware. I'm sure all computer users are used to system crashes now and again, but they certainly wouldn't expect to have to buy new hardware each time it happened. Creative R&D department should maybe revisit the way the Nano's OS is written and protected.
After all that i'm still searching for a decent mp3 player but can find none to match the spec of the Nano at the price. Reviews of cheaper alternati'ves indicate poor battery life and questionable sound quality. Iri'ver T30 doesn't support UMS so thats a no go.
All in all a pretty negati've experience. Perhaps I was just unlucky, maybe once the refund comes through I might even give the Nano another shot, especially as the price has just dropped again by about 3 quid on Amazon......

  • Zen Nano Plus - Only able to hear some so

Here it goes - I got a Nano Plus for Xmas. I loaded the software and started putting music on it by the drag and drop method via Media Player. Although I downloaded about 70 songs, I can only play 30 of them. When I look in Explorer, all of the songs are there - in folders (by artist name). So, I know all my songs are on my MP3 player. I've read some things about folders. Apparently, I can't seem to get to these folders. Anyone have any ideas? I bet it's pretty simple. Thanks.

I had the exact same problem. I had ripped many tracks from my extensi've CD collection using the Creative MediaSource Organizer. When I disconnected my Zen Nano Plus from the computer, however, not all of my songs were visible. When I reconnected and looked on the Organizer, they were all there!?I followed the advice given by PB and dragged all my subfolders containing audio tracks out into the main Music folder and deleted all the empty folders. This solved my problem effecti'vely. Thanks PB!

  • Zen Nano Plus won't play MP3, can't convert to WMA, tried new firmw

    Help!
I have just reloaded the firmware (and all my music) onto my Zen Nano Plus and it didn't fix my problem.
I have mostly .wma files and they play fine. I have tried to load .mp3 files but my player just skips them. I tried using the Organizer software to convert the .mp3 files to .wma files and it says they are converted but I get about min of each song and that's it.
    So I don't know why I can't play .mp3 files and I also don't know why the .mp3's can't be fully converted to .wma's.
    Can anyone help?Thanks in advance,Marci

Wave files will only play by tricking the player into thinking that they are wav files created by the voice recorder. Put wav file into a folder called Recorded Tracks and see if it plays. This will at least see if it will play something. How did you transfer your files?Try ripping a CD to wma files using MediaSource or Windows Media Player - sometimes the firmware gets in a twist and will play mp3s but not wmas, or vice versa. The solution to that is to reload the firmware - go to the Support->Downloads link at the top of the page to get the latest firmware for your player. Protected songs (wma files with DRM) need to be transferred using WMP or MediaSource to transfer the license across, but mp3 files can be drag'n'dropped in Windows Explorer. A protected song without a license will give the symptoms you detail. As it's duff from the start you might just want to take it back - but it's worth trying the firmware reload first to save you some bother. PB

  • Just got Zen Nano Plus -- aweso

    Hey--
So... I just got a Zen Nano Plus yesterday. $60 on Amazon.
It's awesome. It's exactly what I was looking for; while I don't know about the durability, I'm surprised that it came with an arm band and rubber case with a belt clip; I don't think Amazon mentioned those. Anyway, it's great; the FM recording *does* work, and is decent quality. My only complaints would have to be the lack of bookmarks -- while the entire device has resume, you can't resume at a specific point in a file. Hence, if I use it for audiobooks, the second I play something else, I lose my place. On the upside, the folders are awesome. As is the backlight (my last standalone MP3 player -- I normally use my Palm -- was a 28MB RCA Lyra).
I'm using it on my iBook; it shows up as a dri've in the Finder, and, oddly, as a Nomad MuVo in iTunes. However, while iTunes correctly shows how much space is used/left, it only shows the files in the root directory. It'd be neat if they could rig up fake playlists to represent folders... but one of the reasons I bought the ZNP as opposed to a more expensi've/fancier model was that it doesn't need jukebox software to load music.
So far, it works beautifully. I would definitely recommend it, especially at the current price of $55 on Amazon.

It's good to hear that you like your player. Could you post the number of the firmware version that came on your player seeing as it still has FM Recording - Creative removed it and then put it back, but they haven't made the new version available to us old-timers yet. PB

  • I can't install the Zen nano Plus software on my pc. He

Hi,I've read some people have the same problem I do, but no solutuion. When I try to install the zen nano plus cd that came in the package, it comes up with a window saying : "the windows operating system running on this computer is not supported by this product". The nano plus is supposed to work with windows ME which I have?and I think I meet all the other requirements. Could they have mislabeled a cd?I tried installing it with the antivirus turned off with ca antivirus. Thanks for any help,Joe?

I just went to the page?http://us.creative.com/support/downl...ype=0&x=29&y=6and downloaded the Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 file after filling all the info out in the drop down menus. I just installed it and I was good to go. The only issue I really had was installing the application from the CD which I mentioned earlier. But the application from the website installed with no problem whatsoever. I wish I could tell you something that would help as I know your frustration. Are you sure you downloaded the correct version for ME?You might ask someone if you really need this application to put music on you device because it seems like your device just acts like another dri've and you can just drag and drop into your device. I'm not sure about that so ask st so it doesn't mess up you player.or you might be able to use some other apllication to transfer your files to the player?Good luck and be persistent,JoeMessage Edited by joenanoplus on 2-26-200608:3 AM

  • Zen Nano Plus in Austral

Do you know if any stores in Australia sell Zen Nano Plus? And what's the price for 52Mb model?

Don't think anywhere sells them yet, they still sell it under the old name "Muvo V200". I know JB Hifi sell them and DSE sell the 28Mb model. The Muvo TX FM's however are much much more common and you can find them in 256Mb-Gb at DSE

  • Zen Nano Plus 256MB lost co

Hi. I lost...or should I say I dropped the battery casing for my White Zen Nano Plus into the drain..*ouch* Does anyone know how I can get a replacement cover. I am living in Singapore..thanks.

Why have you bumped this - the answer given above is a good one?
Contact Support via email, tell them the clip at the end broke and they will send you out a new one. It is a known problem that these clips are weak so they don't seem to quibble about replacing them.

  • Zen Nano Plus can't see new so

I have a GB CL Zen Nano Plus with 208 (WMA) songs in 6 folders (352 MB space used). When I add new WMA songs, they show up on Windows Explorer File Manager but won't play on the MP3 player. When the MP3 player is unconnected to the computer, I can't even see them on the player. The WMAs are not protected; we tried WMP 9 and 0 to rip the music files from CD. Heard that updating the Firmware might fix, but wanted to be sure. Any suggestions?

There are too many folders on your player - the ZNP can only see a total of 60 folders including any that don't have any music directly in them such as Artist folders. Connect your player and use Windows Explorer to rearrange your player so it uses less folders. When you say that the files aren't protected are you sure? WMP rips CDs to protected files by default so check in Tools, Settings to switch off Copy Protected. PB

  • Can't power on Zen Nano Plus

I have a Zen Nano Plus gb. The unit powered off so I replaced the battery as it was weak. Now it won't power up. I tested the batteries and tried different batteries. No help. The display blinks on and off at /4 second intervals. When I connect it to the USB port the display lights but without the Logo and my PC thinks it is unattached. Mine is about 0 months old. Does anyone know if it is still on warranty and what can be done? Thanks.

  • Volume level ZEN NANO PLUS, can it be chang

I have a new ZEN NANO PLUS that I have bought in Spain.
I?ve had this model before and I know that, because of the EU ruling ( **bleep** those bureaucrats! ), the volume level is not as loud as the model you can buy in the US.
A few people have suggested flashing the firmware and installing the US firmware, has anyone tried this, and did they have any success?
I downloaded the US firmware and tried to install it on my player but no luck, and the player died aswell, but I?m not sure if I did the correct thing...
If anyone knows anything about this any info would be greatly received.
    Thanks in advance
    Neil

You shouldn't have problem using both player together in MediaSource even in transferring audio files(non-protected content). Are you referring to being able to playback PlayForSure subscription content? I doubt it is possible(personal opinion) for the player since I believe it's more to do with the hardware rather than software.

  • I messed up install of Zen Nano Plus 1

    Windows XP Home SP2
Windows Media Player 0 (will use with Zen Nano Plus)
    Dell 8250
    ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
During the CD install, I had some questions and interruptions that required me to cancel, exit and say ?yes? to I did not want to install at this time, but it installed some files. I did not connect the player to my computer because of the manual?s warning to not connect player to computer before setting up the software.
A search for Creative and Creative Zen brought up the following files on my computer:
    C:\Program Files\Creative\Product Registration\English
    C?\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\CTregSvr and PdtIdMgr.pid
C:\Program Files\RealPlayer\Devices had 7 Creative and Creative Zen files
I have an Iomega Zip USB mass storage device on my system which is always powered up. It is used as I go along as a 2nd backup.
Some other threads here recommend not using the install CD and not installing the software, but suggest connecting player and letting Windows XP recognize and install drivers. This is what I did with my Zip dri've. I dislike putting software I don?t need on my computer. I will be using the Nano Plus just for music, and maybe on occasion the AM/FM.
    So?..here are my questions:
. Install with CD or connect to computer and let Windows do its thing?
    2. Will the Zip dri've cause a problem and should I power it down and disconnect from the computer when installing and using the Nano Plus?
    3. Are there more files lurking about in the Registry and where? (I am O.K. working in the Registry) ? I would like to make everything clean and start fresh with a clean install, unless this is not recommended.
    4. If I do need to use install CD is a full or custom recommended?
I will appreciate any assistance and information offered.
    My thanks.
    Miki

I thought I would let y'all know my Nano Plus is installed and my USB Iomega Zip still permanently resides undisturbed in my F:\ dri've and when I connect the Nano Plus, it is recognized by G:\ as it should be.
I called Creative support and so I dd not have to use the install CD, the tech E-mailed me the drivers. When I began the install, I was asked to uninstall any mass storage devices before I installed, which I did......actually I just unplugged the Zip dri've so Windows would not know it existed. The tech said it was better to install their drivers than not; otherwise with WMP I would only be able to drag and drop.
    So.......that's my story

my Creative Zen Nano Plus mp3 player stopped working after i dropped the mechanical part. When I checked it, I didn't see any chip marks or anything, but still it won't work. Can anyone help me? I'll post up pictures if u need me too, and I'll show how it broke.

They must have been talking about a different player such as the Zen Micro which does recharge via the USB port.

  • Zen Nano Plus transfer prob

Am having trouble transferring .wma files to my Zen Nano Plus even though it has 590MB free. When I try to transfer anything using Creative Source I keep getting a "transfer error" message. Have tried reorganising files into folders to cut down on memory used in the root folder - but it doesn't seem to help. It's even stopped letting me transfer between folders. Has anyone else had this problem.. Anyone know what to do??

I'm having the exact same problem with my Nano Plus, and I've only had it for a little over 3 months. I contacted technical support and they told me to download the Firmware update and gave me these directions:
    Zen Nano Plus Firmware Update:
    http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/download2.asp?Product=2720&dlcentric=9423&Product_ Name=ZEN+Nano+Plus&OSName=Windows+XP
To install this firmware upgrade, do the following:
    - Connect your player to your computer.
    - Double-click the firmware upgrade file.
    - When prompted to set your player in Recovery mode, disconnect your player from your computer.
    - Press and hold the Play button while connecting your player to your computer's USB port.
    - Continue to hold the Play button for about 0 seconds after connecting your player to your computer.
    - Release the Play button when the "Find New Hardware" dialog box appears on the computer screen.
    - Follow the instructions on the screen to install recovery drivers for your player.
    - Double-click the firmware upgrade file and follow the instructions on the screen. Ensure to select the "Format Data Area" option within the Update.
However, at step 6 my computer did not recognize my player with it being on and neither did the Firmware. I responded to Technical Support and told them this. They said it seemed like it needed repaired or replaced! Even though there is a -year warranty, there is only a 3 month labor warranty, which means if you send it in to get fixed and it has passed the 3-month labor warranty, you have to pay a $24.95 diagnostics and handling fee. If you're in this situation, they said the best thing to do is try to exchange it wherever you bought it first. I hope this helps!
