Zen Nomad Xtra startup scr

While playing around in Nomad Explorer I tried to set a color .bmp as a startup screen to see what it would look like. When starting up my Zen Nomad Xtra there is no change, however, when shutting down the screen is very distorted and pixelated. I went back into Nomad Explorer - change start up screen section and the file is not listed there. I also reset the settings on the Nomad itself, but, get the same ugly shut down. Any suggestions on how to get this to shut down without being so ugly?

The screen must be 2 bit i.e. black and white / monochrome. Otherwise it will look awful.
To reset back to the original screen use disk cleanup. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu.

  • Zen Nomad Xtra - firewi

Can I connect a Zen Nomad Xtra using a firewire (394) connection/cable? It comes with a usb 2 cable that works on my usb PC, but, I'm thinking 394 might be faster.
    thnx

Actually in practice USB2 is slightly faster than firewire (about 0% on average, but it depends on the system). Either way, the Zen Xtra doesn't support firewire.

  • ZEN Nomad Xtra 3

Before I begin with my new to me year old Zen Nomag xtra Jukebox I have a couple questions. Will the player automatically update after the software is installed if there is a newer version available? I think the software provided is a year old but am not sure. How do I find that out? thanks

I would have to say mainly firmware if you want to, it's not a need.... The newest firmware makes the device completely MTP compatible which is helpful and nice since many things like the Xbox 360 and Windows XP don't have any other driver.

Since it's only for certain tracks, I'm guessing there's a problem with those certain MP3's. Do they sound the same playing from your computer? You might want to re-rip the CD and upload it agin to the Xtra.

  • Zen Micro: Change Startup Scr

When I open up the properties of the Zen Micro (right click while exploring) in the Settings tab theres an option to change the startup screen of the Zen Micro, but its greyed out and you cant change it. Wondering if theres a work around, since a custom startup screen would be very cool.

    Nope, it can't be changed.

  • Headphone jack problem with Creative Zen Nomad XTra 3

My warranty expired a couple of months ago, so, naturally, all problems are showing up now.
Last night I noticed that my player is no longer deli'vering sound out of the right headphone. I've tried with several different headphones and a pair of external speakers so I've confirmed it's with the device and not the headphones. Since the device is not under warranty anymore, I can't find any information on getting repairs or support.
    Any help out there?

I gathered that a lot of people have experienced headphone jack problems with their players, but I thought that was with the Micros only. I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one. Or maybe I'm not. I dunno.
Anyway, I sent an e-mail to customer support. My wife bought the unit for me for a Christmas present last year, so it's only a couple of months out of warranty. If nothing else, hopefully Creative will tell me how to ship it back for repairs at my own expense (it's gotta be cheaper than buying a new one).

  • Zen nomad xtra driver prob

I recently formatted and for some reason no matter what drivers I try to find I cant install the drivers for my mp3 player.
I install the right drivers but everytime it asks me to reconnect the device for the drivers to take effect windows goes through the whole sequence of new hardware again. Rebooting doesnt help.
safe mode didnt work either. it used to wrok before this most recent format. I dont know what to do.
I tried the whole deal on my other comp. same result. It would seem its the player. I erased the firmware on it and all the data. Then tried a firmware upgrade and it said the device was not plugged in. Probably because theres no drivers installed for it. Seems like its a chicken/egg conondrum. What should I do?

Many people have had the same problem, do a search in this forum. When I had the problem I contacted Creative tech support but they were as much use as a chocolate tea pot.
So, if you are trying to put on Playforsure firmware you must be using Windows XP and I would suggest downloading the latest version of MS Media Player, there seems to be some driver with this installation that magically makes the OS "see" the player (sometimes)
As a matter of interest I recently had an e-mail from Creative to rate their support, I replied honestly and low and behold I have had zero response, I wonder why!
Best of luck, you may need it.

  • Nomad Xtra, Zen Micro, and Zen To

I'm your typical money-starved college student and need to find the best sounding mp3 player for as less cash as possible. I have about 800-,000 songs from my cds that I would want to store, and would like to add some other songs from Kazaalite and Limewire. Is converting shared P2P mp3s and such going to be a problem(28-92KBps)? As it stands, I'm deciding on the Nomad Xtra 30GB($90), the Zen Touch($220), or the Zen Micro($220). First of all, I was wondering if the sound quality of any of these three players is necessarily better than the other two. That's my biggest concern. I also realize that the Zen Micro has the least amount of storage available, but the recorder, better quality in-box earbuds, fm tuner, and extra replaceable battery are advantages. It seems like this would save me the most money in the long run. With that in mind, Is swapping out play lists that are stored on my computer a reasonable way to compensate for the lack of storage on the Micro? Or would that be frustrating and should I just go with more storage? I would also like to know if any of these models are compatable with cassette or fm car transmitters, and does that actually work well? And finally, can the Nomad Xtra and Zen Touch comfortably fit into a pocket? Based on all of this, which would you reccomend for me since it will be my only mp3 player?
Also, is the Zen Touch's sealed battery an issue to consider? I'm not planning on buying another mp3 player for a while, and I would hate to have a battery die on me just a couple years after it's purchase and render my mp3 player a $200+ paperweight. Is there any sort of Apple-like battery refurbishing survace for the Zen Touch?

.) Q: Is converting shared P2P mp3s and such going to be a problem (28-92KBps)?
A: You don't have to convert any files to upload them to either the Xtra, Touch, or Micro. You can play pretty much any bitrate mp3, wma, and wav files.
2.) Q: I was wondering if the sound quality of any of these three players is necessarily better than the other two.
A: Not really. Based on everyone's reviews around here, they all sound the same. Each player has a custom equalizer for personal settings too (more bass/less treble, etc).
3.) Q: Is swapping out play lists that are stored on my computer a reasonable way to compensate for the lack of storage on the Micro?
A: To do that, you'd have to remove certain files then upload other ones. There's a synchronize option which could be used to do this a little easier. But it's not as easy as taking music database A on the MP3 player and replacing it with music database B from your computer.
4.) Q: Are any of these models compatable with cassette or fm car transmitters, and does that actually work well?
A: Yes, check out the Creative MP3 player accessories section for more info.
5.) Q: And finally, can the Nomad Xtra and Zen Touch comfortably fit into a pocket?
A: My Zen Xtra fits into every one of my pants' pockets. The Zen Touch is smaller than the Zen Xtra, so I would say that it would fit into your pocket even easier.
6.) Q: Based on all of this, which would you reccomend for me since it will be my only mp3 player?
A: Let the customers decide that for you. Check out the reviews in this thread
Hope this helps in your decision! If I were you I would probably go with the Zen Micro.

  • Unusual start up problem - Zen Nomad freez

Hi, dont know if anyone can help me.
I have a Creative Zen Nomad and have not used it for about 5 months. Anyway, I decided today to see what MP3's I had left on it, and as the battery was flat I started recharging it.
So, there I was waiting for it to recharge, and it showed the initial startup Creative message with the Copyright and All Rights Reserved page etc. But for some reason it just freezes on this page and I cannot get into the proper menu. I tried to reset using the reset+pause button, but it just resets and goes staight back to the Creative front page again, and freezes.
Anyone know what this problem could be? Will it help if I take out the battery out for a while? Is it because I have not used it for such a long time? The machine has been sitting on a shelf all this time so I know it hasnt been dropped or anything.. I didnt hear the hard dri've spinning, but I thought that this may be because perhaps it only kicks in when it gets past the first screen?
    Yours,
    Mystified!!
Hope someone may be able to help me......

    John,
It chimes, then the screen lights up a very bright blue for about 3 seconds,
So that's a good sign that the flyback is good. But also that there's a problem with the HV drive circuits.
I also tried putting in the logic board from another machine (which is broken itself, so I cannot say if this logic board is ok) & it behaved just the same.
I've worked on about 85 CRT slot iMacs and have yet to see a bad logic board.
summer 2001 600mHz Kiva, which has power but doesnt even chime.
When you say power does the screen light up?
I got a reading of 1.9v instead of 3.3v at pin 14 of the logic board/down converter connector.
The current theory on how the down converter works (since no one has seen a schematic) is that it receives a +- AC voltage from the PAV board and converts it (down) to logic board voltage. Again I've never seen a bad down converter it's always the PAV board. I have repaired these but only by replacing the flyback
I've heard the high voltage capacitors go bad. (orange ones near the flyback) also I suspect that there are electolytics that go bad. I'm working on one right now showing HV problem symptoms.
Oh and also try the inversion startup method. Try starting it up up side down. I also give it a good shake and bump. I have seen bad soldering on about 4 flybacks starting it upside down puts pressure on the solder joints and they conduct correctly. Another one I'm also working on shows this symptom.
Do you have take apart instructions? Sounds like it.

  • Zen Nomad earphone jac

I bought a Zen Nomad 40gig mp3 player. The earphone jack went bad. Yes there is definitely a problem with the earphone jacks. I was able to get it fixed at a friends high end electronic shop. I was told that the wirering to the jack was extremely small and would probably not last very long. They had to use a magnifying glass to find the loose wire and effect the repair. The jack eventually out completely. I made the mistake of buying another one since I liked the format and needed one to get me home on the bus. LA's busses are not pretty. After again spending many hours loading my music I was up and running again. Then the balance went out. There is no way to adjust the balance. I believe this problem is also due to the earphone jack. The very fact that they post on thier web site that there are no problems with the earphone jack that they know of shows that other people have had this problem too. Now I'm going to get an iPod.

Creative have never posted to say there aren't problems. You must have a Zen Xtra, which Creative in fact admitted had a design fault which was rectified on newer models.

  • Zen Nomad Jukebox: Won't charge after sitting

My daughters 30G Zen Nomad Jukebox Xtra sat, with the battery in, for about 3 months after she lost it due to low school grades.
After she got her grades back up, I gave it back to her, and it won't charge at all now.
?The charger itself is fine (I checked the 5V with a multimeter), and the unit was charged and working when I took it from her 3 months ago, which is why I don't understand it. I did try the reset button with a paperclip. but it didn't help.
When it's plugged into the charger, there's absolutly nothing on the screen indicating that its charging at all, when there should be an indicator light on it. HELP!!!!!!Shawn

Well, tech support got back to me with the following instructions, that didn't help me at all, but I'm hoping it will help someone else, so I'm pasting it here.
For my problem though, I still don't understand how a working player gets put into a desk drawer, and 3 months later, it comes out and won't turn on, even with the power adapter in and the battery out.
    Maybe its a magic desk.
    Any ideas.......anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
    Shawn
:::::::::::The following is pasted from tech supports email to me:::::::::::
With regards to your enquiries, I understand that you are having issues
    charging the Zen Xtra battery.
May I know if you feel any warmth on the power adaptor while charging
    the battery for 5-30 mins?
    Please try the following:
    - Remove the battery from the player.
    - Power on the DC input connecting to the player. Power on the player
without the battery in the player for 2 hours.
    - After 2 hours, place battery into the player (Check if it is charging)
    - If it is still unable to charge, remove the battery and place battery
    into the player again.
    - Repeat the following steps for at least 2 times.
    - If the charging indicator appears, charge the battery for 4 hours.
Shall the issue persists, please test the player unit with another
battery. Perharps your friends have a player of the same model? This is
to determine if the issue is with the player or the battery.

  • Zen Nomad NX Play For Sure Patc

    Hello,
I called Creative customer support and asked if the Zen Nomad Nx patch is going to be created. I was informed that this will occur. I wanted to ask the forum if this information if factual. Does anybody know when the patch may be released if the news is true?
    Thanks,
    Lance

I really do not see why the NX should not be supported - is it not essentially the same player as the XTRA? I have owned both of them and there seem to be very few differencies between them...
Do you know what the technological difference between them is? I would actually be very interested in knowing what it is...

  • Creative Zen Nomad 40gig Prob

    Hello
I'm a newbie here - Can anyone help me with a problem with my much loved Zen Nomad. It has suddenly crashed & gone into "Rescue Mode" but will not do anything else. The player is fully loaded with a lot of stuff that I can't replace or has sentimental associations?and I am going mental at the thought that I might have lost it - Is there any way I can recover the disc contents ?

    Hi,
Try selecting the Clean Up and Reboot options. This does not affect the files in the player.

  • Zen jukebox Xtra hard case/cassette adapt

    Hi there-
I just got my Zen jukebox Xtra and I'm really enjoying it so far.
There are two things I'd really like. A hard case to protect it and a cassette adapter, so I can use it in the car. When I looked for accessories here at the Creative site, all I saw was an adapter for the larger model. Can that be used for my version?
Also, does anyone have a hard case and what brand/where did you get it's
Thanks so much for the help!

I'm about 75% sure the casette adapter at the creative store will work with the Zen Xtra... if not, any other brand will work as long as you can plug it into the headphone jack. I use the one that came with my old Sony Walkman, and it works flawless.
As for a hard case, I found the case that came with the Xtra to be hard enough for my needs. This is the one that came with my Xtra.
There aren't many other cases out there for the Xtra. Vaja cases makes one, but it will cost you around $60.
