Zen Sleek Freezing up During Shutd

I bought A Zen Sleek back in December. I have not had any seriuos problems with it except for a couple of minor glitches until now.
When shutting down the device freezes up which necessitates resetting the device. However resetting the device does not fix the problem. It still freezes everytime I shut down. So basically the only way I can use it is to leave it on continuously until the battery runs low. I pretty much have to charge it everyday.
Is there anything I can do to correct this problem or is the device toast? Please help!

i li've in ireland. i got a zen sleek. i like its features. the software and drivers i installed onto a winXP system without any hassle. but so far my experience with the little device has gone a little something like this:
connect the usb.
zen freezes.
unplug the usb
use the reset switch
give it a minute to get ready
plug in usb
computer recognises it, for a second
then the zen freezes
unplug usb
reboot
oh, it's rebuilding the library. fancy.
jump thru some menus, play the radio.
plug in the usb.
frozen again.
reboot.
try it with the harddri've spinning.
with a song playing.
no spinning, no song.
radio playing.
play the radio then jump back into a menu and plug in the usb real quick.
tada!
sometimes this works. sometimes no.
it's like i have to sneak up on the sleek with the cable.
when i finally do get it connected and go to import a song or album, 2 out of 3 times it freezes in the middle of transfer and all the songs ready to import change from "pending" to "failed."
i've loaded sixty some odd albums on here so far. sometimes with no problems at all. it's not the songs/files, because when they finally do load, they're completely without symptom.
frankly, this is getting ridiculous. trying to load one album today i must have reset the little bugger 5 times.
also, just curious, why is there an option to change menu orders when it doesn't actually change the menu order? all that section seems good for is setting checkmarks next to features that you want to have in your 'main menu.' strange.
don't get me wrong, i really like the player. i like the sound quality. i like being able to record from the crystal-clear radio. but man... this is getting out-of-hand.
any suggestions? please!?

  • Zen Sleek Freezing/Locking up Problem, need major h

I just got my zen sleek a few days ago (thursday, december st), and it was working fine. Friday, after listening to the zen a lot during school, on the way back home i tried to start it up. I held the power button for a few seconds to turn it on, and then the power light turned on. But nothing happened. The power light was on, and that was it. plugging the zen into my computer/power didn't do anything, the only way to get it to start up was to use a paperclip to engage the reset switch.
I thought that was the end of it, but now every time the player is in a full shutdown it has to be reset to turn on. What's wrong? I tried reflashing firmware (2.0.03), i tried cleanup, nothing works.
Only thing i haven't tried is a full reformat.Message Edited by SolidxSnake on 2-04-2005 0:08 PM

  • Zen Sleek Freezing Is

When I first had my Zen Sleek it seemed to work like a charm, very happy with it's performance; untill one day I was putting music on it, and when all the transfering was done I un-plugged it and it frooze. I tried the recovery mode and that did not work, it simply was stuck on the screen of "Updating Library", I know the right way of entering the Recovery Mode, press and hold Play/Pause and stick a paper clip into the hole on the bottem side for around 5 seconds or more. But that did not work, so I called and the Phone service was not able to help me, so we came up with the idea of just simply letting the battery die and using it once it had died. I did that, but time after time again after that it still gave me freezing issues, even when transfering music onto my Sleek, the player would freeze and be as good as a rock untill I would unplug and let it die again. Finally fed up, I emailed for help and was given the idea of updating every thing, firmware, player, etc., I did all of these, none of which solved my problem. So I had it, I sent it in for a new one; Got my new player two days ago, reloaded all my music, seemed to work for a few days, let the battery completly drain. Today I plugged it in for a recharge, and while that was going I decided to put a few more albums on that I had got the day before, and as it was transfering the songs onto my player, same thing happend, my Sleek frooze completly, I can't enter Recovery mode at all. I'm stumped, I know my computer is plenty powerful enough to handle this task. But for some reason my computer seems to always put my Sleeks into a froozen mode, that can not be brought out of. My only guess is that Sleeks do not act well when low on battery power and you wish to do file transfering tasks.
Help please, I'm ready to cry

Hello there, my goodness I can completely relate to you but unfortunately I have no idea about what to do about it. My Sleek has totally frozen too but on the "Zen Sleek" screen and nothing, let me type that again nothing anyone has suggested has worked. The reset button does not work, i cannot get into recovery or maintenance mode, i can't turn it off i just have to wait until the battery runs down and then recharge it, turn it on again and exactly the same thing happens it remains frozen on the stupid screen. I am so upset, i've had problems with freezing before (although then it was usually when a song was playing and you just had to wait until the battery run down and then recharge and then it was fine after "rebuilding library" and am so tempted to go and replace this with an IPOD...yeah, do the unthinkable, an IPOD....

  • Zen sleek freezes when i transfer mu

everytime i upload music to my zen sleek it freezes when i disconnect it from my pc.
"please wait" appears on the screen and stays there forever... i've waited up to an hour. i push the reset button and it rebuilds the library and then it works fine but i don't want to do that everytime i transfer music. i've had it for about 4 months and never had any problems until recently.
can anybody help ? is pushing the reset button too often bad for the mp3 player ?

  • Zen Sleek Freezing Prob

    Once upon a time...
My Zen Sleek froze on the welcome screen when I tried to turn it on, displaying just "CREATIVE". When I get home, I try to use recovery mode. I select "Reboot" though the same happened again. I tried just leaving it though after 2hrs, the battery had gone (it wasn't fully charged). When I plug it in to the mains, it freezes again.
I emailed Creative Customer Support about the issue and they recommended that I format the dri've, which I was reluctant to do as I had important data on the removable disk partition.
Eventually, I weighed out the odds and decided that the data stored was not all that important, so I started the format.
That was at am this morning. it is now half past 0pm and it is still displaying "Formatting.." with no indication as to how long it will take or whether it is doing anything. it may have frozen again?
    Any Ideas?
    David Halstead

I had the same problem with my zen sleek when i first got it, and i tried reformatting (which doesn't affect the contents of the dri've as the user manual states) and that still didn't work and it froze up probably 5 times in one day.... soooooo, i did the system reboot screen, deleted the firmware, installed the new one i downloaded from the creative support website and it's been running fine since.

  • Zen Sleek Freezing on Zen Screen HE

my Zen Sleek keeps freezing on the Zen Screen when it is loading, i have tried restarting it and i have tried letting the battery die, charging it again and it still freezes.. is there anyway to fix it without sending it back?

try cleanup first, depending on how full your sleek is, it could take a while.
Mine has done the same a couple of times, and this has cured it each time.
It does reset all your preferences though, like your EQ settings and menu configuration, touchpad clicker etc.
Let us know how it goes

  • Zen Micro freezes up during shutdown proced

Hi...Yesterday my Zen Micro developed a problem when shutting down after listening to songs. When I follow the normal shut down procedure it freezes and the screen locks up with the "Shutting Down" message. I'd appreciate any help anyone might offer to fixing this problem. Thanks
    Sloan7

I have had the same problem since I purchased my Zen Micro 2 months ago. It does not happen every time - perhaps /4 of the shutdowns hang. I have used the disk cleanup several times: it does not make much difference. (I still do the disk cleanup, though it may just be a superstition with me now.) I have let the shutdown go overnight with the external charger connected, in case the zen was just really busy -- no success. I have the latest firmware version. After these events [remove and reinsert battery], the library usually rebuilds within a minute or two.
This appears to be an oft encountered and easily reproducible problem.

  • Zen Sleek quest

I posted earlier about a problem with my Zen Sleek freezing on the "docked" screen. It froze while ripping a CD, and it is still the same even though it is unplugged. My question is what should I do with it now? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks.

Have you tried resetting the player? I'm not 00% sure if the Sleek has a reset switch or not, but look for a small recessed switch. Don't confuse it with the microphone, assuming the Sleek has one of these also.

  • Zen Sleek freeeee

My new Zen Sleek freezes sometimes and I have to reset it.
When will new firmware arri've that solve this problem?
And also fix play for sure.
And the possibility to change sound style (rock, jazz and so on). Beacuse i can`t find anything about that on the menu`s on my player.

    a) Have you tried running a disk cleanup at all to sort out your crashing problems? (press in your reset button while holding down the Play/Pause button like other Creative DAPs)
    b) PlaysForSure is not technically supported by the Zen Sleek at the moment. At least on my box, there is a nice Sticker over the PlaysForSure logo on the back of the box, suggesting that it is not currently built to function with it. Ocassionally, Windows WMP0 does detect it, but this seems rather on and off.
I would make an assumption, at some point there may be some MTP firmware for the Zen Sleek as the firmware is so similar to that of the Zen Micro, but of course this is by no means any kind of guarantee.
As usual, Creative have made no promises of firmware upgrades for the device, and neither have I found any significant problems with my player at the current moment that would warrant such changes.
    c) As mattan has already detailed, the EQ does exist at the place he mentioned. Alongside Smart Volume and Bass Boost.

  • Zen Sleek Photo Freezes/Locks Up after about 5 minutes usage (need to drain battery to recov

    Hi,
My 20G Zen Sleek Photo has just recently transformed itself into a useless brick.
No matter what I try and do, it always ends up freezing after about 5 minutes usage. When you force a reset it does unlock but when it comes back on it sticks on the Creative "copyright" start up screen.
I've reformatted and re-installed the firmware several times but with the same result.
    font face="comic sans ms,sans-serif">
The only time it totally unlocks is when you either:
() let the battery fully drain and then recharge it or
    (2) you disconnect the battery lead and then press the On/Off switch for several minutes.
I've looked everywhere for a solution/reason but nothing. You find plenty of people with the same problem but no answers. Surely someone knows how to fix the problem
Is it a faulty battery (unlikely because mine charges up fine and holds it charge well)
Is it the hard dri've (very unlikely since the player can start up correctly [given the above recovery procedure] and play tracks within the 5-0 minutes you have available)
Is it the firmware (I doubt it, I can't see what the firmware's got to do with a delayed lock up, having worked fine up to that point)
Is it the motherboard (maybe....., to my mind it points to a component failure that allows an electric charge to build up and not dissipate, the only way to discharge it is to short the battery pins [with, I hasten to add, the battery removed!])
    font face="comic sans ms,sans-serif">
Has anyone within the Creative community successfully solved this problem Has anyone received a decent answer from Creative
I find it staggering that the guys at Creative have washed their hands of this problem. They, after all, are the most likely people to identify the problem - only they have a schematic of the motherboard that would allow them to investigate and locate the problem.
For the record the firmware I'm using is v .0.0.
Any guidance would be much appreciated,
    Victor

Is there really no one with an answer to this problem or have I overlooked a previous post that explained the fault.

  • Zen Sleek - Undocking freeze prob

    Hello -
Just purchased a Zen Sleek a few days ago and everything worked great until last night. I have been ripping all my CDs into the unit over the past several days with no problems. The unit is hooked into my computer with the USB cable - I load a few CDs into it - I unhook the unit from the USB cable - it reads "Please Wait..." and then after 30 seconds or so shows me the normal menu screens. As of last night it now freezes on the "Please Wait..." screen when I disconnect it from the USB cable and I have to use the paper clip reset technique to reach the reboot function. The unit works fine after that and the music that I loaded is there but now I have to reset/reboot the unit every time I disconnect it from the USB cable which is very annoying and obviously not something that should be happening especially since it never did the first few days I used it.
Any ideas? Is there something I should be doing before I disconnect the unit from the USB cable after loading music into it's Should I exit from the transfer program first? Try to power off the unit first? (I tried that and the unit would not shut off)
Any help is appreciated - thanks.

Yep, I would (a) recommend exiting the transfer program (b) run a disk cleanup from rescue mode.

  • Zen Micro Freezes during play and sometimes won't turn on at

I have been having some issues with my micro and wondered if anyone could help. I didn't drop it or do anything I can recall to cause these issues, it just seemed to start out of the blue. 2 things are happening. Sometimes it will freeze during play and "buzz" (it's really just transmitting a countinuous sound of a millisecond of what it was playing like if the guy was saying apple, and it freezes when he starts to say it it will sound like "aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" but in a completely illegible buzz way). Second, it will sometimes not turn on at all, no creative logo, no lights, no nothing. Once I take out the battery and replace it, it will always then start no problem. The battery does not seem to be loose at all as the above mentioned buzzin will not stop until I remove the battery, and as I have repeatedly removed the back of the micro during these buzz session?the battery remains firmly seated and the buzzing continues until I remove it. So far I have updated the firmware to 2.2.02 (which I believe reformatted) which didn't stop it from freezing up during play, and just now did a disk clean up (which I can't imagine will have any change?if a complete format didn't). I haven't had the start up problem since the firmware update, but I haven't turned it on and off that many times yet. Any ideas? Sorry to be so verbose but I wanted to explain as best as I could what's wrong, and what I've done so far.

Remove SIM and miniSD card first. Try to boot.
The try hooking it up to the PC again. And see if you might be able to redo the update process.
You can also try a hard reset. As described in a different tread. (Or read below).
Othervise, I afraid you will have to take it to a Service Center.
    -- Quote from djassa1 (Re: N80 won't start up!)--
    Just reset to factory default.
You will need your 2 hands to do that: While the phone is off press and hold the [Green call Button] + [3 digit button] + [* button] and power on and hold the powwer button. Do that until the phone asks you for the local city reference.
    -- End Quote --
    Best of luck!

  • Real Player/XP crashed, now Zen Sleek 20GB not recogni

Okay, I had my Zen Sleek 20 GB connected one day, put the computer in standby mode, then disconnected the device. When I turned the computer back on, I got a blue screen (first time for this year-old Dell!) saying it had recovered from a major error. After that, anytime I tried to transfer an MP3 or anything else over to my player in Real, a message would pop up saying that the device did not support my file type, which was impossible. I thought the crash might have something to do with it, so I went ahead and uninstalled EVERYTHING on my computer, then reinstalled everything. Didn't work. Formatted my Zen, and erased the firmware. But when I tried to install the new firmware, the installation wizard didn't "see" the device, as if it wasn't connected. So now I'm clueless as to what to do next, and my player is completely on the fritz. Any ideas?

Howdy, I have a Zen MicroPhoto 8 GB player that is stuck, and as much as I know about MP3 players, even I can't fix this thing. Somebody's gotta help me now. I know how to access the Recovery mode, but that doesn't help me much if it freezes up when I access anything there. My computer doesn't even recognize the player either. I am running XP Pro with WMP-2. I usually like Creatives because it's easy for my PC to see it as a new dri've and then just copy/paste songs to it. I don't really like the time consumption of using a pc player to manage my music. Well, I really need help making my PC see the player. I think if I could see the player I could format and reinstall software....maybe. I don't have an a/c charger but have always charged it with the pc usb cable. I have two good batteries that will run the player too. I can always fix the GB or less Creative players (flash memory), even if my pc won't recognize them. I am apparently dumb about the hard dri've players cause I can't get anything to work to save my life. Once, and only once, I got my device manager to see it...but it wouldn't let me install or manage software transfer to the player. It just said "your player is not connected"....and I can't remember what I did to get it to see it in the device manager either. One more thing, I have a bluetooth a/c charger that has an output of 550 mA's. I have thought about connecting that and boosting the power...temporarily....to see if that does it.....but I'm a little scared to do that. I'm liable to fry my player...! Anybody know a way I can start to fix my 8GB player (signed: "Very Frustrated"

  • Constant Zen Sleek crash after downl

My Zen Sleek works properly in normal use. However after downloading music with WMP and disconnect the cable, the player goes into rebuild library mode and freeze. The problem is usually resolved by resetting the player and let it go through the rebuild library routine. Occasionally, it is so screw up that I have to go through Rescue Mode/Disk Cleanup procedure to get it to work properly.
    Have anyone encounter similar problem?
The culprit seems to be bugs in the firmware dealing with Track/Album deletion. I did some experiement
. Backup music to hard disk
    2. Reformat the player
    3. Download music to player
    4. DIsconnect the player - rebuild library went through fine
    5. Repeat 3/4 many times and it works every time
So downloading doesn't seem to be a problem by itself.
Then I deleted a few albums. After that the rebuild library freeze start to happen after I download music to the player.
From reading other messages, it looks like I should just keep a staple with the cable and not to expect fix from Creative. As far as I can tell, Zen Sleek is already orphaned - I cannot find a single accessory for Zen Sleek in the MP3 accessory list while trying to look for a stupid cable.

Thanks very much for the pointer - The freeze problem seems to went away once I switched to use the Creative Media Source Organizer. The CMSO also allows me to have any directory structure I want instead of always artist\album\song. The player still display lists according to tags.
The new (and fairly consistent) problem I have is that the CMSO software seems to be corrupting my wireless connection. So now I have two choices - reboot the player with WMP or reboot the computer with CMSO.
