Zen Sleek Photo - XP doesn't install player

Hi peeps,
Being a Creative fan :smileysurprised: I decided to add the Zen Sleek Photo to my repertoire of Creative kit (Gigaworks S750 and X-Fi Fatality SoundBlaster).
Well, it arri'ved this morning and after installing the software (except WMP0 as I already had that) I plumbed in the player and after getting the XP bubble "Found New Hardware" and the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard", when prompted to install the software for it, all I'm getting is:-
"... There was a problem installing this hardware
MTP Device
An error occured during the installation of the device
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fasion..."
Any ideas as to what the problem is?
Hope someone can help as I'm mega frustrated that I can't even get any of my tunes on it to even give it a whirl - looks nice though
Many thanks in advance,

And since it appears these issues are quite frequent (from a commercial aspect at least) IMHO, Creative should attempt to proffer some easier resolution to the potential pitfalls, possibly by adding a few extra bits of software/instructions with the product.
Agreed
Creative should perform more checks on the computer to make sure that everything is required and installed and configured correctly to use the player. The steps listed in the MTP FAQ here. Are the most common methods to solve device detection issues. I'm sure Creative is aware of these problems and that these can be done. However Microsoft should be involved as it is their standard and Creative is simply making their products to the standard set out by Microsoft. Hopefully when WMP comes out, Microsoft would implement these changes or even change the way the computer recognizes MTP devices without disturbing the existing programs that do support MTP, like Notmad Explorer and Media Monkey. The suggestions listed in the FAQ are from Microsoft (hotfixes) and the users who have posted on the Creative, Dell, and iRi'ver forums. The suggestions were simply gathered up and put together.
This file basically does everything listed in the FAQ, just doesn't download the hotfixes for you, but does do the registry changes, the Windows Services, and other things as well. Its a simple solution which I will start giving as suggestions more and more, hopefully it will end up in the MTP FAQ.

For some reason, the mic doesn't work. I can record with the player but when I play it back, no sound is heard. If I speak very LOUDLY and close to the zen sleek, then I can hear something, but barely. Any reasons why the mic isn't working? Or is it defecti've?

i manage the mp3 content of my zen sleek photo with the creative media explorer. almost each time i disconnect my zen sleek photo from my computer my player hangs. the only thing to do is to reset my player by pushing a paperclip in the reset hole. after that everything works fine again.
at disconnecting time my player is inacti've.
i am using microsoft windows xp with sp2.
this is really annoying.
so any help would be appreciated.

thanks a lot for your answer.
but i have already cleaned up and also formatted my zen twice and i still have my disconnecting problem.
do i have to do anything before i can detach my player ? anything like telling my computer to send remaining data to my zen ?
i really don't know. it's weird.

• Installing Zen Sleek Photo 20 GB software over Zen Sleek softwa

I have a Zen Sleek 20 GB that can't/won't be fixed. I just purchased a refurbished Zen Sleek Photo GB. My question is - can I just install the Zen Sleek Photo software over the Zen Sleek's software Or, do I have to uninstall the Zen Sleek's software first Thanks

It's probably a good idea to uninstall your Zen Sleek's software before installing the Zen Sleek Photo's.
That said, I run 4 different Creative .mp3 players on my computer and haven't had issues with them. Still, it's probably a good idea to uninstall the older software.

Hi,
I just bought a used ZenSleek photo 20G for my dad (67 year old guy who wants to listed to audiobooks), but I cannot get the device to connect to my Vista-run 32bit HP laptop.
Here's the strange thing: I have a ZenSleek Photo of my own (at least 2 years old) that works perfectly. I plug it into my laptop with the same cable, in the same USB port, and the computer automatically opens the organizer for me to put stuff on the player.
Both players show a Firmware of .0.0.
I've tried hooking up the *new* player to my husband's desk top (also Vista) and it doesn't recognize the player either. I've downloaded all the new Vista 32bit drivers again. I have WindowsMedia Player . I've also reformatted the player and rebooted it. The player is charging when hooked up to the USB, so something seems to be connecting, right?
I've been reading about Vista/Creative incompatibility a lot, and am wondering if I need to find a computer with XP and Window's Media Player 0 to play around with firmware on the new player. But why would my Zen work great and this other player that is exactly the same model not?
Have I just bought a piece of junk? or is there something I need to do?
Any suggestions are welcome.
What does Device Manager report on the device? I would not mess with the firmware just yet. Did you have the Creative software on the computer before or did you install it trying to get recognized? It should be recognized on Vista without any other software installed. Does the player turn on when you connect it or does the battery icon just flash for charging?

• Zen Sleek Photo Probl

Hi, I was wondering if anyone can help me. I've done a search through the board and have installed everything possible to get my Zen Sleek Photo to work without much success. I've installed Mediasource 5 and the Playsforsure thing, and Vista does recognise my player. I can transfer individual MP3's to my player, but it just seems to store them, it doesn't play them (and they don't show up once I've disconnected from the computer). I'm getting really frustrated with it now, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it!

You have an application open that is currently using the the Sleek. That is why you have the icon in the System Tray and the "docked" icon on the player. The firmware installation program is experiencing a conflict as it cannot access your player since it is being accessed by another program and returns the message of "not connected"
Try moving the firmware installation program to your Windows Desktop and closing all applications. If you are able to get the player connected and not have it display the "docked" icon, you should be able to install the firmware. If Windows prompts you asking you what you want to do?when you connect the player, select Do Nothing.

• Zen Sleek Photo and Nomad Zen X

I posted earlier about problems with Vista and the Zen Sleek Photo mp3 player. The Zen software is not compatible and won?t install.
After receiving some information from Creative, and after some further experimenting on my own, I have put together a procedure that will, in fact, do a full install of the Zen Sleek Photo on a machine running Vista.
I have also discovered that this installation procedure also works for my Nomad Zen Xtra ? a nice bonus!
I will send this info, in Word document form, to anyone who requests it. Just email me at:

It worked for me, and I have received feedback from several people already who have used this procedure with 00% success, so I know that it works!

Hey Chickybabe,
I also own a Zen Sleek photo, and while I haven't had any of the problems you have mentioned with Napster; one problem you should watch for (currently experiencing it for the 2nd time!) is trying to play your music from Napster and not being able to because you get a message saying that "No license to play this track". And it's a huge problem, as it doesn't just affect one song, but your ENTIRE library. I fixed it once and am trying to find out how to do it again. Once I do, I'll probably leave Napster, but I will probably have to download ALL my music again.

• Zen Sleek photo not recogniz

I had my zen sleek photo working fine for about 3 weeks, then all of a sudden it's not recognized.
I've spent the past 3 hours looking around on the site and messing around, and i've given up hope.
I've reinstalled the software, installed and reinstalled the drivers, rebooted and cleaned up the zen player, tried deleting my USB ports and reinstalling them, tried different ports, tried the permissions and the usb zen connection registry hacks, pretty much every solution i can find.
I have win XP, SP2. I haven't got a hub, i've tried all 6 usb ports on my computer (overkill i know), taken out all other usb connections except for my mouse.
I don't necessarily want to update firmware on the player as most people say that only messes things up and you can't go back, but seeing as it only recognizes the player as an MTP device i doubt I could update anyways.
In the device manager, the zen shows up as a portable device, and there's a little ! by the picture (meaning it's not working properly, obviously). When you expand it, there are clearly no drivers for it as it says the driver info is not available.
When I first plug it in, it recognizes the device and tries to find applicable drivers for it. I've let it search my entire computer before, and it supposedly finds something as the two folders appear with data transferring between the two, but immediately afterwards it stops and says:
"There was an error installing this hardware:
Zen Sleek Photo
An error occurred during the installation of this device
A service installation section in this INF is invalid."
I assumed this meant my drivers were bad, so I went on a mission and found several different drivers, and installed these, but I guess they didn't work as it still doesn't work.
I downloaded the Zen Sleek Photo XP PlaysForSure Firmware upgrade program, and it says "Your player is not connected, please connect your player"
The Zen charges, so the cable is OK and I haven't done anything to it since the last time it worked.

yep. man mine did the same thing. i emailed the crew here and they said to reset it. w/ the lil reset button. they also said to enter it in recovery mode. i didnt know what that meant. lol so i just reset and tried it. then it werked

• Zen Sleek Photo Freezes/Locks Up after about 5 minutes usage (need to drain battery to recov

Hi,
My 20G Zen Sleek Photo has just recently transformed itself into a useless brick.
No matter what I try and do, it always ends up freezing after about 5 minutes usage. When you force a reset it does unlock but when it comes back on it sticks on the Creative "copyright" start up screen.
I've reformatted and re-installed the firmware several times but with the same result.
font face="comic sans ms,sans-serif">
The only time it totally unlocks is when you either:
() let the battery fully drain and then recharge it or
(2) you disconnect the battery lead and then press the On/Off switch for several minutes.
I've looked everywhere for a solution/reason but nothing. You find plenty of people with the same problem but no answers. Surely someone knows how to fix the problem
Is it a faulty battery (unlikely because mine charges up fine and holds it charge well)
Is it the hard dri've (very unlikely since the player can start up correctly [given the above recovery procedure] and play tracks within the 5-0 minutes you have available)
Is it the firmware (I doubt it, I can't see what the firmware's got to do with a delayed lock up, having worked fine up to that point)
Is it the motherboard (maybe....., to my mind it points to a component failure that allows an electric charge to build up and not dissipate, the only way to discharge it is to short the battery pins [with, I hasten to add, the battery removed!])
font face="comic sans ms,sans-serif">
Has anyone within the Creative community successfully solved this problem Has anyone received a decent answer from Creative
I find it staggering that the guys at Creative have washed their hands of this problem. They, after all, are the most likely people to identify the problem - only they have a schematic of the motherboard that would allow them to investigate and locate the problem.
For the record the firmware I'm using is v .0.0.
Any guidance would be much appreciated,
Victor

Is there really no one with an answer to this problem or have I overlooked a previous post that explained the fault.

You do not need to install the software on the disc. The driver is nati've to the Vista OS. Windows Media Player can Sync to the player rip cds, ect.

• ZEN SLEEK PHOTO & WINDOWS 98 SE!! AAAAAARGGH!

Hi!
Apologies in advance if this problem has already been raised and addressed, but due to a mismatch of information, I find I have now invested in a lovely mp3 player (namely ZEN SLEEK PHOTO) I can't use. The problem? It's mimimum OE requirement is XP and I'm still running WINDOWS 98 SE. Okay, obviously the solution (ahem) is to upgrade to the XP System, but, I'm hearing all sorts of talk of driver updates, installations, fixes etc and wondered if someone knew of any available remedy here on Creative. At the present time, the installation disc is not chuffed with the OE system and I can get no further.
Anyone have any nice, straight-forward step-by-step solution they'd care to share?
Cheers

It's a PlaysForSure device, and uses the same drivers any other PlaysForSure device uses. It's standardized.
I've finished downloading the drivers required. Do I now just need to connect my player or am I required to install the software on the ZEN SLEEK PHOTO first? The last time this was unsuccessful because of the Operating System. So if all this works, I'm guessing that it will be a case of transferring mp3 files (hopefully straight from my hard dri've through WMP) into the Zen player.
Can you please confirm the procedure using WMP?

• Zen Sleek Photo Installation Wo

Hey guys, I just bought a Creative Zen Sleek Photo MP3 player and i'm having trouble installing the driver. After plugging it in, windows detects the new hardware and goes thru the installation process the driver. At the end it tells me:
"Cannot install this Hardware.
There was a problem installing this hardware.
MTP Device
An error occured during the installation of the device.
The required section was not found in the INF."
There are only two INF files, one located in the root and one within Walmart/Files. I manually directed the installation wizard to both directories but the end result for both is the same. Nothing Happens.
Just wondering if anyone has encountered a similar problem or if there is a fix around for this?
Cheers
(winxpsp2)

Hello, I have had the same problem and had great help when I emailed creative.com. They recommended I uninstalled the software, disabled my broadband and disabled my spamkiller and security packages. Once I had done this I reinstalled and now my player was recognized immediately. This had never happened before. I now can download. Hope this helps Forgot to say also I had to make sure I had windows service pack 2.

• Zen Sleek Photo Re-loading Library at Powe

My Zen Sleek Photo Player has started acting weird on me. When I power it up it goes through a re-building library phase before the powerup is complete. When it is powered up, it plays my music; but doesn't indicate what music it is playing on the screen. I cannot get my pc to recognize that my player is connected to it, so I cannot download music or podcasts. Some of my music has disappeared and all of my saved podcasts are gone. I have gone through the reboot routine, but to no use. Have I played my beloved player to death? Anyone have similar problems or suggestions. I trolled through the message board but didn't find a similar problem. Thanks.

You can try formatting but take note that you will lose the contents in the player. You might also want to try connecting to another computer or try using another usb cable to see if it gets detected.
If that still does not work or is not possible, you probably need to contact support to get it sorted out.

• Zen Sleek Photo, the longer I own it, the more irritated I

I've had mine for maybe /2 years now, and I am starting to desire an MP3 player that actually works smoothly. Sometimes the screen freezes and makes songs skip. Half the time, the sorry software known as Media Explorer freezes and will not let me transfer my music. I tried Media Player for transfers, and it does not even "see" my Zen. And none other of the Creative programs can get around this problem for some reason. Theres a couple gigs of music on my computer that cannot be transferred because of "Unspecified Error"s occurring. I've tried shortening file names, posting on here, numerous resets, and nothing works. Bit rate does not appear to have anything to do with it either, as all the songs that will not transfer do not share a uniform bit rate.
Next, has Creative ever offered any type of Update for the Zen Sleek Photo?
No.
To date, I've never seen one. Unless someone can show me otherwise. This appears to be the blacksheep of the family, because there is practically zero support for this thing. I would imagine that the majority of the problems I've had could be fixed with a simple update, but I may try to pee a hole through a rock instead. At least I know thats possible.
Zune, you're looking pretty good.

Have you tried connecting to another computer? not yours maybe friend owns a Vista? You would not have to install ANY Creative software to check.Rear usb ports. Did you have WMP prior to the SP3 update? I know that is a special cord for the player ( i own a sleekphoto) are you using the cord that is made by Creative & not a generic one?The genreics can damage your device. Did you reinstall WMP?You won't need to buy another player since it works.
