Zen Stone Plus not detected by software - GRRRRR

Hello all
A month ago I bought the Creative Zen Stone Plus.
I was quite happy to go with Creative because I had been the happy owner of a Creative MuVo player for a few years. The MuVo was remarkably straightforward to use. The only problems I experienced were occasionnal freezes of the software during file transfer. Nothing major. I lost count of the number of times I recommended this product to others, usually as a cheaper but just as good alternati've to the iPod.
However, I am beginning to have serious doubts about Creative.
This is the problem:
- The player cannot be seen in Creative Media Lite.
- In Devices Manager, "Creative Zen Stone Plus" appears under devices category "Other devices" and has a yellow question mark next to it.
In other words, I have had the Zen Stone Plus for a month and it has never worked !
From my exchanges with Technical Support (email) and from the knowledge base (eg # 9287,
and 4782) and from this forum, I have tried several things such as
- deinstalling (actually rolling back) then reinstalling Windows Media Player (to get MTP drivers installed)
- downloading the Iomega patch
- I downloaded the player recovery tool (the one with the red button) but when I click on it, I get the message "Player not detected. Do you want to retry"
I found two dead ends in the technical support articles I read:
- I decided to make changes to the registry, as one article suggested that the problem may be due to USB permissions. So I typed 'regedit' but the compuer would not accept this command.
- I also decided that I would change the firmware, as another article suggested. How on earth do I do this. I downloaded the firmware for my player but I do not know how to enter the Recovery Mode. It is not clear from the Recovery page (KB ID # 4794) whether my device is 'ZEN' or a 'Zen Series'. I treid the procedure for both and neither worked !
I'm beginning to feel like I've wasted my money. I had been thinking about buying a Creative player for my sister and also a friend. Now I won't bother, even if this problem is solved. I consider myself to be IT literate but how does Creative expect technically illiterate people to cope with its products !
Can anyone help me to make the Zen Stone Plus work? Otherwise, I'll consider it to be a **bleep** Stone and flush it down the toilet, where it belongs.

When you plug in the ZEN stone, your device manager list should refresh. Besides under USB controllers, did it detect anything when you plug it's You can also try the following:
.) Unplug/replug the USB cable and connect it to the rear USB port instead of using front ports.
2.) If you have another USB cable, try using a different one and see if it works.

    I have found many post on same subject , but still have not found a case similar to mine, or adequate answer..
    I have been using my Stone plus for a year, with no trouble.
    It is still working properly as a player.
    I just decided to add some music on it, and my computer is unable to detect it. But it used to.

    I have tried to find the device going through Start/Control Panel/system/hardware/device manager/USB controllers but it shows nothing except USD root hub and Intel 9290EB USB Uni'versal host Controller

    I just got this a couple of months ago. About 0 days ago I fully charged it. I didn't use it since then and went to use it tonight and it was completely dead. Is it normal for it to do that? And btw I had it plugged into the USB and waited literally hours and it never showed any bars so I bought the wall plugin and now I charge it that way. The USB does work for transferring files though.

    I do possess this MP3 Player (with integrated speakers) for more than 2 years now and have never been using the Automatic Shutdown function of the player (in the menu settings). Yesterday, I went to bed, wanted to listen to some music and tried out this function the first time, but it did not work. I tried it with 5, 0 and 30 minutes. What am I doing wrong or is this setting just a joke?
    I am using the current software/firmware and am not a newbie to technical instruments so I do know how to - theoretically - start this function by going to setting - Automatic Shutdown - scrolling to the minutes I want to have - Enter/Confirm with the middle ball-knob at the front of the player.
    Maybe some of you might help me, I would highly appreciate that.

    Hi JLM, am running .0.05e fine and in fact listening to it at the moment. Is there anyway you can regress back to .0.03 to test your theory? Testing a bunch of 28k CBR MP3s is an easy thing to try also.Message Edited by BlueRobin on 0-02-200802:49 PM

  • Certian bands/artists not showing up on Zen Stone Plus when they are on the play

    I got my zen stone plus a day ago. I've been using windows media player sync to get music onto it?But when I sync it once, I cant seem to get more artists on when I sync again. It says the songs are on there through the actual file... but they aren't showing up on the player!?any idea how to fix this?

    I am also having a problem like this. I have tried to add to the music on my Zen Stone + using the Creative Media Lite software. It is transferred, I disconnect the player properly but when I try and browse to the music it is not there. I have then re-tried, just transferring the album folder directly under the Music folder, and it works! I have other tracks using the dri've:\Music\Artist\Album folder structure and they work, so what is going on? Maybe the ZEN doesn't like The Decemberists!

    guys , i purchased this stone plus in july , recently it was charging and as a suuden when i tried to on it , it didnt do that instead of that aftr when i pluged it to charge it didnt do that and also is not powering on

    Hopefully you don't have 2GB worth of files loaded but I'd try a reset which is destructi've of the contents. The reset button is on the side of the Zen stone plus.Message Edited by Spete on 2-02-200705:52 PM

    Hi!?Bought a few days ago a zen stone plus but haven't tested it. Aboiut 2 weeks later I opened the boix and noticed the player does not charge, or power on and is not recognized by my pc as well...
    What should I do? The shop where I bought it is about 600 km away from my home...

    Try it on another PC if you can to be sure the player is having a problem, if it does the same there then I would advise contacting Customer Support so they can assist you.

  • My zen stone plus 2Gb not starting

    i have been using my Creative Zen Stone Plus 2GB since past 7-8months
    recently it started giving problems. It dint start up and when i connected to my computer it is asking me to format the dri've when i try to open it..and when i click to format..it says it cant format and then the dri've vanishes from My Compute.
    I took to the service centre..tht guy he said he updated the firmware..i came bak ad connected it to my pc to charge...my winamp detected it as an mp3 player and asked me to synchronize which i cancelled..
    open the dri've...then when i tried to delete the files...same prob started again!!!
    now the dri've doesnt even show up in My Computer..
    wat to do?

    Looks like something is wrong with the device, I would get in touch with support if I were you.

  • HELP! Brand New Zen Stone Plus WON'T TURN

    Just received the product today, downloaded and installed the latest software. Charged the unit for 3 hours and successfully loaded mp3 onto the player. Following every direction and clicked the "safely remove hardware" option. All ready to go... press the on/off button... NOTHING HAPPENED! No screen! LED light did not turn on! NOTHING!
    So went to Creative site and follow the "fix it myself" direction, reset the player did not work, formatting the player did not work. There is no firmware download available for Zen Stone Plus (only Zen Stone), so I could not try that option.
    I am starting to think there is a defect in my player. Do you guys have any suggestion on what I should do? Does any know how to contact Creative's US customer support (email address and/or phone numbers)? And please don't refer me to the 3 dollars to 30 mins support because I already spent money expecting to buy a non-defecti've product.
    I tried looking for the customer support number before posting this message. I did not know Creative have such a poor customer support system! I clicked the "email support" on its site and it directed me to some "fix the player yourself" page (I also tried those solution but did not help), and does not lead to any customer support number!     Thanks for everyone's suggestions.
    Since I didn't want to spend more time to fuzz over a defecti've product, I returned my Zen Stone Plus to Amazon (I did this because I know sending it to Creative would take much longer time before I receive a replacement). Amazon sent me a new one in about 3 days at no charge (and free return shipping). The new one works fine now and does everything its suppose to do (so far...).
    Just like I wrote it when I posted the problem, I tried different time intervals and it still wouldn't turn on. I couldn't have lock the unit because it requires power on to turn on the lock (which I was unable to turn on the unit).
    The lesson I learn here is think about the product's customer support and where I am buying from before purchasing anything online. I would definitely think twice before buying Creative's products again.

    mine wont turn on after almost two weeks since i bought my player. i went to the store where i bought my player, asked them to replace my player right there and then (because i firmly believed that it was a factory defect) but to no avail. so i let the creative support checked my player and voila! my player was infected with WORM VIRUS!!! they fixed my player, deleted the virus and was all set after 2weeks. i scanned my computer, found A LOT OF WORM VIRUS, deleted them before connecting my player to this computer. after transferring files to my player & disconnecting it from this pc, it wont turn on again!! and i havent used it for at least 0mins since i got it back! darn!! i'm gonna return it again to the storea and ask for creative support's help again. does anybody know if there is an anti-virus available for zen products?

    Yes, the softwares can co-exists with each other. However the iTunes would not work with the Zen Stone Plus.

    %?I have just bought a used Zen Stone Plus MP3 player from a seller on eBay. It came without any software (i.e. a CD) and I have had a problem accessing the Starter Pack from http://support.creative.com? (It downloads the ZENStonePlus_PCApp_CLE_E6__52_0.exe file but gives an error when I run this.)
    I expected the display to light up on a long press of the central button (with the USB lead and headphones disconnected) but it shows no response. Windows XP Home recognises it when I connect via the USB (direct to a port), the display lights up briefly and the LED shows blue.But leaving it connected for several hours does not seem to have charged the battery. (The LED continues to show blue until the USB lead is disconnected.)
    Any advice for a confused first-time user would be welcome!

    I have new ZEN Stone Plus 2GB Black
    but i have a question - about charging - I have Mac OsX and when i connect it to computer the charging icon appears on the display, but I has been charging for few hours now and still there is steady blue light - not blinking - can anyone tell me how long does it take to fully charge the battery when I connect it for the first time and secondly - is there any software for Mac OsX 0.4.0?

    funny(!!) I have the same model (Zen Stone Plus) and the exact error occurs to me to --a power sign and NO CHARGE!!
    I thought I heard that with Zen -starting it (re-boot) with the Zen plugged-in already will let it work? I tried that and , that didn't help.. -Does any Forum user have any idea what to try?

    I am really desperate.... I charged my Zen Stone Plus yesterday and forgot to "safely remove the player". So by accident I just shut down the computer and when I realised that the player was still connected I just pulled the USB cable out of the PC. Since then the player doesn't work anymore. I can't switch it on. When I connect it to the PC it is not recognised, basically nothing happens. I know it's not the USB hub cuz any other device I connect is recognised immediately. So it must be the player....does anyone have an idea what could have happened and is there anything I can do to fix it's Unfortunately firmware or mp3 recovery tool are not of help as the player is not detected.....please please help!
    I can't even exchange as I am based in UK but bought the player in Germany....so any advice would be VERY welcome !!

    So sorry to hear this.
    The only thing I can think of is to try the reset button, but you probably already?tried that.
    For might this ever happen again. I think it's fine to turn of the computer with the player still connected, just wait for the computer to turn off completely until you remove the player. ?(At least that's what I always do, using the logic that when everything is turned off so is your player... )

    Just got a Zen Stone Plus 4G for X-mas. Music end going great! Love it! However, I believe I found a bug in setting the date: If I set a day beyond 22 DEC it will not change the Day/Month but instead will advance the YEAR! Examples:OK:5 APR 2005 changed to 2 DEC 2007 becomes 2 DEC 20072 DEC 2007 changed to 22 DEC 2007 becomes 22 DEC 2007 Wrong:5 APR 2005 changed to 25 DEC 2007 becomes 5 APR 20062 DEC 2007 changed to 25 DEC 2007 becomes 2 DEC 2008 For now I set it to 8 DEC 2007 so at least the day of the week (Tuesday) will be correct. I will set the correct date in a week on Jan 2008 which works. Notes Tried the auto sync from the CMLite software (it said the date does not match PC) so I let it change it thinking this would solve the problem. Alas the date became 00CANCEL2007 :-(2) Tried redoing the firmware to no avail3) Tried reset to no avail4) Never tried it with org firmware as first thing I did was update to .0.03 so I can't say if it worked or not in the org firmware. Can someone confirm/deny so I know if it is just my Zen Stone Plus 4G But if it works for you please confirm which version of the firmware you are using and if you have the 4G. Thanks, Matt

    Unless they change the firmware I believe the next date that will go awry will be December 23, 2008 where the same thing will happen and it will try to roll over to 2009 and again not let us set the day/month for a week. It looks like they simply got the code wrong for the rollover point for a year so it should be a easy fix. But hey, even if it is a more complex issue, a year should be plenty of time for them to fix it:-)
    At any rate, after several go arounds with customer service we are (finally) at the point that they are no longer asking me to do things with my player (resets, formats, etc) and they "have escalated this issue to the developer for them to look into this matter." However, at the same time, they are trying to get me to get a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) but I am not going that route because I think (esp after seeing other posts like yours) that it is a firmware issue and not just my player. As you and others have noted, everything else works just fine so I don't want to be without a player for something that I think (hope) can/will be addressed via a firmware update.
    On that firmware note, they do have another firmware update that just came out for our player?which makes the stopwatch display the milliseconds a whole lot less jerky. It is .0.05 if you don?t have it.
