Zen Style M300 - good and bad I'm afraid!

Neat, easy to operate, clear (though small) screen.
I can li've with it as it works OK for the price - BUT it really needs firmware updates and co-operation with OSs and Apps:
. Has anybody at Creative heard of Linux? If you Google 'Linux' you'll find that there are many millions of us who use it now. If you are confused by the number of distributions you could do worse than ensuring that your products function well with Ubuntu. Please contribute to the Linux community by providing info to allow your players to be recognised by Rhythmbox, Banshee etc (as older ipods are). In the meantime give clear instructions as to how to operate the M300 with say Ubuntu / Banshee. Files that are hidden in Windows appear in Linux - you should have stored all config files in a Config folder - not the root. At least your device appears as two USB attached storage devices so I can add files in Linux easily.
2. You MUST implement bookmarking (both in Music and on SDCard. If I listen to a podcast or audiobook I need to come back to the same place - after listening to other stuff. The device does not even remember where you are on the SDCard if you pause before shutdown. This then needs new menus 'Bookmarks' in Music and SDCard.
3. Playlists are a shambles - why insist on Unicode / Winamp? The Unicode step stops synching and complicates updating playlists horribly. There is no Winamp for Linux - and you don't publish exactly how you want the playlist format to be as far as I can see. Why not implement a Now Playing queue so you can select a number of files that will get queued for playing? Then you could add a menu item the the Now Playing menu to Save As a playlist (OK you would have to name it something - maybe just 'Playlist date time'). You can't make playlists for the SDCard files.
4. Your user guide is very poor - loads of pages with just a few lines on each. It doesn't even say clearly how to arrange files and folders in Music:
I found out by trial & error that the player isn't fussy - it just sees all files in Music - however for sanity it is best to arrange with folders Artist - Album - Files. The SDCard listings just see filenames not ID3 track names - really bad for podcasts that often have horrible long filenames.
5. On the subject of ID3 - would it do any harm to mention that the player only understands ID3v2.3? It took me a huge search on the web to find out why your player did not read the mp3 data - and lists as Unknown Artist, Unknown Album - that was in ID3v2.4. In Linux I can easily change the tags to v2.3 - but it is annoying to have to do so.
(to engineers at Creative: ID3v2.4 was created in the year 2000 - do keep up!)
6. The SDCard MUST integrate into main memory - it is so clunky not having the same facilities for it as in the Music folder. This must be so that you can charge more for M300s with more basic memory!
To sum up:
When you create web pages you test them thoroughly with different browsers - and when you create devices like the M300 you must test them and make sure that non-technical users can operate them easily in Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux Ubuntu, Mac OS: in each case with a good free app available for the synching. Nowadays we use devices with a whole range of systems at home and at work.
I wish you'd sent me a pre-production model to give you this feedback a few months ago!
If I sound irritated - I am - mainly because its a lovely little player with some hugely irritating characteristics.
OK - top firmware update requset: bookmarks!

Hi,
Thank you for the feedback.

  • Browsing and playing by folders on zen style m300

    Hello
Can I browse and play the music by folders on my ZEN Style M300?
In menu i can only via playlist, artist, title and genre

I received my Zen Style M300 just right now and I discover that it miss this very important feature (that every MP3 reader have!).... HOW SAD
    !!! That's a VERY VERY BAD thing! ??
Hey CREATIVE, PLEAAAASEEE, add folder browing in next firmware release!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have my music organized in hundreds of folders. This is by FAR the best and QUICK way to organize music, because you can choose your criteria arbitrarily (not by artist, album or whatelse)!!!!
However this feature already exists for files in the external sd card, so.... simply expose it for the internal memory! PLEASEEEEE!!!!

  • Creative Zen Style M300. My story.

    Hello to all,
The following is a list of features that, in my humble opinion, every decent MP3 reader must have:
    1) Must be SMALL. Images and video must be avoided because they increase screen size: MP3 reader is for playing music, I use it during jogging and I need to hold it in a single hand. If I want to see images and videos I use my smartphone.
    2) Must have a great capacity even if you play only music. I usually buy 8 GB players and expand it with 16 GB SDHC card. 24 Gb is enough for me.
    3) Must have a battery duration of, at least, 15 hours.
    4) Must have a processor fast enough to have a good response time.
    5) MUST support browsing by folder.
    6) Must have FM radio.
    7) Buttons must be responsive and placed in right places in order to be easily accessible with a single hand.
    8) The output must be sufficiently loud.
    9) Must support MP3 and WMA.
    10) Must have a good SNR.
One year ago the only player that fits all these requirements was Sansa Clip Plus. A very well designed MP3 reader (in terms of features). BUT, my first Sansa Clip Plus battery dead after 6 months. At the time no other valid alternative exists... so I buy a second Sansa Clip Plus. After some months, it stop to works with apparently no reason. How sad. Look like that battery and/or power system of Sansa Clip Plus is very poor. So I have tried to find a valid alternative. I have tried the Creative Zen Style M300. But it lacks some important features. Referring to the previous list:
    1) The size is acceptable.
    2) OK
    3) OK
    4) Not fast and responsive as the Sansa Clip Plus but could be accepted (Sansa Clip Plus is very very fast).
    5) This feature is absent and IMHO is a totally wrong decision. I have tons of MP3 organized in folders and now I have to reorganize they differently. In addition the reader come with no software and I don't know how to edit ID3 tag.
    6) OK
    7) Touch buttons are a really bad choice for a MP3 reader. They are not very responsive and badly located (hard to be handled by a single hand). To be more comfortable the volume buttons should be placed on the left side (usually managed by forefinger and middle finger of the right hand).
    8) Volume is poor. Equalizer have no effect if your volume is near the maximum level (31), because the output power is limited. Look like Creative limit power for European models. Sansa Clip Plus also limit power, but you can choose your country in the configuration menu and if you select a country outside Europe, you can overcome that problem.
    9) OK
    10) OK
I wish to report my experiences hoping that Creative designers can read it.
    - A disappointed customer

    Hi,
Most music (classical) is from ripped CD's, some albums from eMusic. If needed I use Mp3tag.
The problem is that the pics seem to show up or not at random. It's not a big deal really, just odd.
I don't have this problem with my Zen X-Fi 2. Only problem there is pics for .flac files.

  • Zen Style M300 Bluetooth Streaming Problems

    +~Hi
I've got a new 8gb Zen Style M300 player which I've upgraded with the latest .00.6e firmware.
I have been able to pair to a blueTooth headset (Nokia BH24 http://europe.nokia.com/find-product...s#Connectivity?) and it will connect every time.
However the streaming is choppy (something like 0 pulses per second) so the BT is unuseable - I've turned off my wifi etc in the house in case this was interfering, but that didn't help
Has anyone managed successfull BT streaming...
This headset supports the following standards:
    Bluetooth version:
    2. with enhanced data rate (EDR)
    Bluetooth profiles:
    Handsfree profile (HFP) .5
    Headset profile (HSP) .
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) .2
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) .0.

/Re: Zen Style M300 Bluetooth Streaming ProblemsIHi KokChoy
Proximity & different headphones don't seem to help, and the included audio-book shows the same problem...
However some good news : the M300 streams OK to a friend's Jawbone Jambox speakers so it'slooks like the BT on the M300 does meet some of the BT standards.
My Samsung Q330 Laptop streams OK to the Nokia BH24 headset, which shows that this device?is not faulty.
It just looks like that the BT streaming from the M300 somehow?doesn't match the BT of the BH24
Specs for the jambox are these, which appear to be the same as the BH24 on my st post - strange

  • ZEN Style M300 AutoShutdown

    Hello Creative's friends.
I have bought 3-4 years ago, my beautiful mp3 player ZEN. In this player, which is very good to me but the storage of 4GB, i had a very suitable option to me, of Timer for Shutdown.
Now i bought the ZEN Style M300 with 16GB. This option is not present, but there is another one which is called "Idle for Shutdown", which i can't understand how it works. I configure it, and gave the time of 2 minutes, but nothing happened.
Could anyone please help me ??????
    Thank you very much
    Vangelis

    Hi vagcreative,
They both function in the same manner. Here is the definition based on the M300 User Guide:
    Setting the Idle Shutdown Time
You can specify how long your player can remain inactive before it automatically shuts down. This feature
    helps you save battery power.
    1. On the main menu, select System Idle Shutdown.
    2. Select the setting that you want.
If it does not shutdown after the allocated time, try to update your firmware to the latest version. If that did not solve your issue, please contact our Support team.

I have just found out I was using a Class 10 SanDisk microsdhc card, and am concerned that I may have done damage to my phone and/or music collection (as per Nokia guidelines). Is anyone able to tell me what the chances are that this will have damaged them, and if there's anything I can do to rectify? Thanks!

    Hi dwprices,
What Android device are you using?
    - Based on my understanding, I believe that Android devices commonly have an SD Card slot (I am currently using Samsung Galaxy SIII with an external MicroSD Slot)
May I also know what particular headset you are using currently?
    Cheers!

  • Zen Style M300 frozen when Kingstn or Sandisk 16 Gb microSDHC is plugged

Last week I bought a Zen Style M300 through online store in Australia. The main reason for buying this player was because it is said to spport microSDHC card up to32 Gb. I wanted to keep my music files separate. I applied the new firmware straight away. It worked for a while with a 6Gb microSDHC (Kingston Brand)?card. While transferring MP3 audio files from windows explorer to the card with the player connected by USB cord, a message propped up in the computer "USB device not responding". Had to unplug the USB cord and?reset the player to start it, with the card removed from the player. Since then the player get frozen if the card isplugged in. Had to remove the card again and reset the player for it to work. Tried with a new Sandisk 6GB microSDHC card. I even reformatted the microSDHC card in FAT32 format. The problem remains the same.
I have tried Solution ID 94626 and ID 9373 as suggested by Creative Website without success. Informed Technical support people and hoping to get a reply yet. The sooner they resolve this issue the better. Any ideas? I think there is a serious issue with this player.
If it is a software issue they should correct it. If it is a hardware issue they should refund in full because it does not stand up to the advertised specifications.

    Hi,
Please see my reply to your other post.

  • Zen Style M300 problem lock button

    Hi,
I have my new Zen Style M300 with a problem. The lock button is not working. If I move the button to the right position the device is not blocked, so if I touch any other button (an arrow...) it is possible to modify the music, radio or wathever.
Another question is about the "idle shutdown" feature. I think is not working as a sleep feature, I mean, I would like to listen to?the radio at nigth and enable the sleep mode to shutdown the device in 30 minutes (for example). That's something not possible to do with de idle shutdown.
I know a lot of creative mp3 players have this feature, but the M300 device.
    Thanks and regards

    &Hi,
Sounds like something's wrong with the power switch, you might want to check with the place of purchase or contact Customer Support. In order for idle shutdown to happen, there must be no activity on the player.

  • Problem with ZEN Style M300

When I trying to found bluetooth audio devices with ZEN Style M300,? the player get to freeze after a little bit time that is searching devices, and so I have to push the reset button for using again the player. :mansurprised:Anyone have the same problem?

I have a similar problem. It recognized and paired with a Sony Ericsson MW600 Hi-Fi Bluetooth Stereo Headset once. I lost connection, could no longer connect, and tried to re-pair it. Now it recognizes the the headset's name (MW600), but when you try to pair with it stays on a "Please wait..." message. It will stay that way forever until I press the back (left) arrow. Then the message says "Remote Device not responding" and pairing fails. This MW600 headset pairs with other devices (cell phone, PC) just fine, though, so it's not malfunctioning.
I suspect this might be a Bluetooth version compatibility issue? I say that because when I connect to a Jawbone Era (pretty new device, probably latest Bluetooth spec), everything goes fine.
Also, if I clear all devices, then try to pair to just the Sony Ericsson MW600, I can get the M300 in a state where it hangs and will not respond to anything. I then have to press the reset button using a paperclip to start over.

  • Goods and Bads with the 6110 Navigator

    Hi
New user of this forum and a proud owner of a Nokia 6110 Navigator. I had the 6280 but after 2 SW upgrades and still problem with it, I gave up.
First impression of the 6110 is good, but I found a couple of small things that ”irritates” me.
1 – The timer function when you write “0200” and press options instead of green (call) button.
2 – The original headset is too cheap to be an expensive phone like this, should be more like Koss “plug-in-your-ear” kind of headphones, instead of the small “put-close-to-your-ear” thing that is included.
Also, the straight up cable from the top of the phone is no good. Makes the phone lie bad in the pocket. I also guessing that this cable is going to snap after a while. Why not a 90 degree “adapter” or something?
3 – When you sending an SMS, on my 6280 you could choose “last used number” or something like that, now you have to choose name, and then number, and then OK to go back to the SMS.
Well.. that’s it so far. Anyone else have goods and bads about this phone ?
    mvh / regards
    Timmy

    hi im havin same issues!!
i went from 6280 to 6110 after i smashed it
1.first off i didnt kno of the timer option...good bcoz it was annoyin not havin a stopwatch
    2. that "recent use list"...lack of it...is annoying. i just made groups of ppl i msg most
    3. menu organisation is confusing
    4. in call history, it only shows most recent time for that entry, ven if they rang 5 times that day, also they dont show call long eg duration of 3mins 40secs
    5. on my 6280, i had a shortcut menu as mi left select button, cant do this now
    6. power button is end call button, lotsa accidental turn offs
    7. cant turn off start up tone
oh well i still like it

  • Zen Style m300 low volume

The volume on my Zen only goes up to 31. It is not loud enough for me to hear it if there is any external noise around me. Makes the player useless. I assume this is some kind of government safety regulation that has been required. However, If there is a way to limit the volume, I assume there is a way to unlock the restriction.
    Any ideas?

  • Good and bad things about Bridge CS6 Beta

The good thing first: No memory leaks anymore. No crashing, no freezing, no write errors when running Bridge scripts on large numbers of image files. Ah—what a relief!
In comparison this this, the bad things are just trifles. First—when selecting the exposure data to show up under each thumbnail then the aperture number will get rounded down to the nearest integer. So, for example, apertures of f/1.4, f/1.7, f/2, f/2.8, f/3.5, f/5.6, f/6.3, f/6.7 will get presented as 1.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 6.0, 6.0, respectively. In the EXIF data, the aperture numbers are correct, and Camera Raw 7.0 will display the correct numbers. Second—when starting Bridge CS6 or Photoshop CS6 then the monitor will get switched off for a brief moment. The screen goes completely black for two seconds or so, then returns as if it was in stand-by mode. It's nothing severe but very annoying.
Windows XP (32 bit) SP3; CPU Athlon Dual-Core 64 X2 6000+; RAM 4 GB installed, 3 GB used; graphic card AMD Radeon HD 2600 Pro (AMD Catalyst Display Driver from March 2012 installed); monitor Dell Ultra-Sharp 2407WFP-HC (24", 1920×1200 px) connected via DVI, no second monitor.

    PECourtejoie wrote:
    What camera produced the files?
Doesn't matter. I have files from two different cameras, Sony A900 and Leica M9, all shot in both JPEG and raw format (ARW for the Sony; DNG 1.0 for the Leica). The issue occurs with the thumbnails of both the JPEG and raw files. For the very same files, the issue is not there in Bridge CS5.
    PECourtejoie wrote:
It's often good to run the latest ones.
Well ... the previous version of the display driver actually was the latest, at the time of installing CS6 Beta. The current driver version came out only two days ago.
