Zen Touch & Static Electric

Yesterday my Zen Touch was charging on the kitchen counter. When I reached over to touch it, I got a slight shock from static electricity. I was standing on a run at the time. Anyway, my Zen wouldn't turn on but the light on the power button glowed a steady blue. I'd never seen that before. Usually, the power light only glows steady when it's on and flashes when charging. I reset it using the pin hole and everything was fine. It's not anything I'm really cocerned with, since it was easily fixed with a reset. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone else has the same experience.
Anyone else out there ever have that happen?
Sube

Believe it or not, the static charge generated just by walking across carpet in your house can be upwards of 34,000 volts. The charge depends upon things like relati've humidity and temperature.
It takes far less electrostatic voltage to damage the things in your player, like chips and circuits.
Because I am in a job where I learned that (and much more :P ) trivia regarding electricity, I am in the habit of grounding myself (i.e. - touching metal) before touching anything electronic.
Now, it is fairly unlikely that any voltage would get into the circuitry in your player, but if you love your Zen like I love mine, precautions are never bad.

  • Static Electricity feeling when touching Macbook Pro 13

Ive been experiencing a weird static electricity when I touch the laptop whilst its charging and im touching something else metallic connected to a power supply. if I slide my hand along the palm rest it feels like a vibration.

    Been there.
Are you using a properly grounded outlet with all of your gear? If not, try that first.
If you are properly grounded, you may find that you have a problem at your physical location with respect to grounding/earthing/bonding and it should be checked out by a qualified electrician as it could be indicative of a dangerous situation.
In my house the problem was a poor earth-neutral bond, and once corrected by my electrician the shocks went away.

  • Zen Touch Touchpad Static Electrici

Well all of a sudden the zens touchpad started going wacko
Going up with my finger the thing ended down and vise versa
Hovering over the touchpad sometimes made it move strangely
Any coments on what should i do. Tried format, clean up, firmware update already...
Also I just bought the thing like 3 days ago.
For the warranty I m going to the shop I got it they give me a replacment and figure out what to do or I just send it to you guys?

    Here is the update:
I left the player out of its case with nothing pluged in on my wooden desktop for some hours.
Seems to be fine now. Logic if it was static electricity.
Now some comments on the how it got all that static in it:
I had it connected with my pc with the ub cable. Then I disconnected the pc end of the usb wire. So I had my player with a usb cable (like an antenna) between the wireless desktop i use an the wireless desktops reciever. I noticed that the mouse was moving strangely like it laged. I thought what the heck is goin on here. After removing the usb cable from the player aswell that lag phenomenon stopped. So I guess thats where it got all that static elctricity.
EDIT: All this happened with the player pluged into the power line (recharging).
Hope the above will help all those who experience the same thing.
    Njoy
PS: I 'll probably return the thing if it hapens again randonly.
PS2: Would love some comments from technical staff on this subject.Message Edited by dems on 2-25-2004 03:7 AMMessage Edited by dems on 2-25-2004 03:9 AM

  • Zen Touch: problems starting, touchpad, new firmw

This is a description, in chronological order, of the issues I have had with the Creative Zen Touch player.
. Bought player, charged exactly as described and player would not get past Zen Touch screen. Tried everything without success, had player swapped by **bleep** Smith.
    2. WMA and data files added to new player without any problems. Players seems to work well.
    3. More files added, but I started receiving an error when trying to copy files to the player from the computer. It seems that the player requires significant power to talk to the computer, this problem was more prevalent on a computer with USB .. A full battery charge will work but this will be drained quickly, so the best bet is to plug the player into the mains while it is docked with the computer. This should be added to the manual.
    4. Player seems to work well from that time till the past week.
    5. Installed newest firmware a week or more ago.
    6. During the past week there was one day when the touchpad would not work properly. This problem was that moving between items becamse very cumbersome. I would move to a selection, but when I lifted my finger, the selection would jump two places lower. If I just touched the touchpad, the selection would jump two places lower. This problem rectified itself a day later.
    7. Tried to start player as per normal but it would not start. Used reset buton, player started and had at least two thirds of battery (ie I guess that the problem starting was not battery related).
    8. The next day, the same problem occurs, but reset would not work. Tried many means of starting player, until plugging into mains. Player starts and shuts down as per normal within a short period of time. Waiting significantly longer and the problem starting the player will arise.
    9. Went to special menu on player and cleaned up player then rebooted. Player seems to work.
    0. Next day player will not start. Tried pressing and holding down the start button for a long time, pressing many times in a short period, using reset button, using reset with play/pause button. Eventually tried mains, which brought the Creative logo onto the screen with no backlight, player did not even try to charge itself (ie flashing led on start/shutdown switch). I left player plugged into the mains and came back to find it charging. After this, the player started.
. Later in the day, I tried unsuccesfully to start player without success, using all possible tricks as mentioned. Went to inspect player a while later and it had was playing.
    2. Now I have found that if I do not actually perform a shutdown and the player switches itself off using the idle settings, it will start up more easily, but not the first time. It seems that the touchpad problem (read above) has returned, but not as bad as before, in conjunction with the player being slightly easier to start (up to 5 attempts at pressing start).
    Theories:
    - When player is shut down it stays in a quick start mode for a period of time. During this time, if player is started, it will quickly start up and begin playing. After this time, a procedure automatically changes so that a more full startup is required during the next start-up, eg parking hard dri've or something else.
    - When a player is shutdown from idle, a different shutdown happens, allowing easier startup later.
    - The player in question is having difficulty starting from this second mode.
    - Start/Stop button not jammed or working. Unlikely because I can shut down using the button
    - Player not receiving startup message. Possible, but unlikely because reset does not work and theory .
    - Battery not strong enough to perform initial startup? Feasible option given that the only time the player could start was when plugged into mains. However, player does have 2/3 of life left, which does not make any sense, unless the battery indicator is faulty. Fully charging the battery did not make a difference. Thus, max output of battery may have diminished.
    - Hard dri've faulty. I am not hearing any hard dri've sounds when attempting a startup, so this is unlikely, since once player is started, everything works.
    - New firmware is problematic. Explains sudden change in player's working. However, when I went to downgrade the firmware it said that the files may be corrupted by going back a version, yet to test.
    - New firmware requires a hard disk format to work properly. Was this fully tested by Creative before release? Ie, did they put 0 gig of music on a Touch, then upgrade the firmware and see if the player continues to work correctly for a reasonable period?
    - Player is a first time release with unironed bugs trying to capture the overflow from iPod, and we are the testers.
    To Creative,
I am reasonably upset by this turn of events. I chose the Creative player over the iPod because of the battery life, reported music quality, ability to play more formats and the added storage. However, I would prefer a more durable player to what I appear to have in my possession. I believe I have given a reasonable description of the player and its problems, which should assist, unless the problem is already known. Please advise me of my options Creative.

Number 6 has turned out to be my electronic albatross. I have attempted every concept that I have read on this board: wiped down the keypad with a towel, damp cloth, bought a plastic case in an attempt to ward off static electricity, reset the unit, cleaned up the hard dri've, etc.. The fact remains that the unit jumps when it wants to. Very disconcerting. I have decided that since Creative is well aware of the issue and is maintaining corporate silence, that I should just cut my losses and buy an iPod. Tested one at an Apple store last night and was impressed with the control and functionality of their click wheel. It is a real shame as I truly think this Zen Touch was a cool idea but has consistently lacked support and follow up by Creative.
Haha remember that poem...rhyme of the ancient mariner...good to see other cultured fellows...
anyways I too have been haveing the jump problem. I've gotten somewhat accustomed to it, but I simply can't wish I had an iPod....its control is so much better. My friend said that this was how the iPod was at first, but then it got better. Now whether this was a software problem (I hope so) or an actual hardware issue (I'm going to be ticked if they don't replace it), I don't know. They better rectify it.
I wrote them a huge, uber persuasi've, rhetorically packed essay about why they must fix this problem if they wish to ever be on the same playing field as apple.
and I never got a reply.
so we'll see what happens. they better fix it.

  • Creative Zen Touch - Sounds from inside case and firmwear not reload

    the story:
I was sitting in my room when suddenly in the middle of a song, the music stoped, i go over to check. Nothing works, so i get a paperclip and reset it. After reset, it stays on Creative logo for 5 mins. While inside the case a sound like a motor going on, off and then a static kind of noise. I restart a third time and i get recovery screen. I do cleanup. then reboot. Then format, reboot, then firmwear deletion, reboot.
I head on over to the website and read FAQ's and such. I attempt to put the newly downloaded firmwear onto my Zen Touch. I click the file, it starts the instalation process and then says "An application is interfering with the flash program (e.g Creative file Manager)....." I would like to add, i've tried rebooting my computer, and i've turned off every single thing except for the instalation browser.
    What should i do?
Message Edited by chris23 on 08-5-2006 06:49 AM

I think your hard dri've has crashed. If the player itself is making a loud noise like that it's most likely the hard dri've. I'm not sure if reloading the firmware would solve this problem.

  • Safety over static electricity

Today, I connected my iPod to my laptop, recharging it.
And when I touched iPod accidently, I was shocked by static electricity, and both iPod and the laptop is shut down.
I couldn't turn on the laptop for several minites. Anyway, they still work fine later.
My laptop is IBM Thinkpad T42, and iPod is nano 1GB.
And there is no plastic cover on iPod.
Should this happen? Or should I just keep the plastic cover on it all the time? I'm afaid that they may die completely next time, and I couldn't even get the evidence that iPod has broken my laptop!

Well I just had the Mac guys over and it seems that it's the electricity in the house rather than something wrong with the Mac.. Something for the electrician to take a look at.. Oh, and if u wear slippers or shoes u don't feel it

  • Static Electricity causing Aluminum Shelled Notebooks to freeze??

Once in awhile, when I come back to my computer, I get "shocked" by the aluminum body of my MacBook Pro (just for the record, this has happened to me too since the Titanium and the previous [same design] Powerbook) .... and it'll freeze the OS.
Nothing moves, and I have to hard restart.
Does this happen to anyone else? It seems like it happens when the static discharges on the trackpad.
    What is up with this???

When using my PowerBook G4, I sometimes feel the zap of static electricity when I first touch it...and if my finger was close enough to the trackpad, the zap 'stuns' the trackpad for several seconds. It's difficult to move the cursor very far. After several seconds the responsiveness returns and everything is normal. This is with the factory power supply and either the two prong adapter or cable with grounded plug.
Also my Mac Pro (and my previous machine, a PowerMac G5) seems susceptible to static. Apparently my desk chair builds up a charge when I'm sitting at the computer for long periods and if I put the computer to sleep and then get out of the chair, the computer wakes back up. My G5 did the exact same thing. The other morning it was particularly cold and I draped a shirt over the back of my chair and the static from that woke the computer. As I walked into the room I could feel the shirt crackling and raising the hair on my arm.
The Mac Pro has a grounded plug, but the machine is sitting on a carpeted floor under my desk... I've been wondering if I should find a mat or something to put it on.
    Crazy, huh?

  • Static Electricity Discharge

i just got a new macbook and whenever i put it in its case to travel it builds up a lot of static electricity and i get shocked, when i take it out and touch a metal part (screw or usb port). does this cause damage to the laptop? if so, how could i tell? it is important to note that the computer is off whenever i get shocked.

While a bit of static electric discharge probably won't hurt anything I wouldn't touch any of the I/O ports. There's some screws visible in the case that I'd try to remember to touch before you go plugging something into the USB or such port.
I've not really encountered too much static electricity in my MacBook (too humid in Indiana in the summer I guess) but I remember my PowerBook used to shock me. Never had any trouble with it.

i went to the dealer in our country and tried the macbook but still the same shocked me and the tech. there ,when i tried to change the magsafe with spare one there it's works without any problem and without electric shock ,i'm thinking about changing the magsafe OR to buy the moshi sticker someone told me it's prevent the static electric shock.

  • Zen touch has fro

    Hey all,
    I hope someone can help.
My zen touch (20gb) player froze whilst turning off, i let it sit but eventually had to reset it to get it to go off, since then i havent been able to turn it back on and it wont charge, the blue charge indicating light doesnt appear and when i plug it in all i get is the creative logo and the copyright info, i've tried the reboot advice on creatives web page, but that desnt work either!!!
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Iain

My zen touch freezes from time to time, done all the usual things without any improvement. But today discovered that it freezes when used near some electrical equipment for example my wife old treadmill which uses an ac motor, its ok with the new treadmill with a dc motor. So it appears that the zen touch suffers from electrical interference, generally this is in the rf range (radio frequency). I hope this helps many users as it was driving me crazy and it appears it's a huge problem with many people.

  • Help!! Need to reload my Zen Touch Pla

I tried to upgrade my player and it told me that it upgraded successfuly and when my player restarted it now tells me that there is firmware problem and the recovery mode comes up.
    Creative Zen Touch v0.0.0
    . Cleanup
    2. Format All
    3. Reload Firmware
    4. Reboot
I have formated the player and attemped to reload the firmware, it asks to me to erase the current firmware and reload via usb cable. Then tells me to start firmware update now. I have downloaded the ZenTouchP4S_PCFW_LB_2__0 firmware file and all it tells me that my device is not connected. I hear that the usb connection is acti've and windows asks me what to do with the device, and it shows up in My Computer.
My player is only about 6 months old.
My computer system is Windows XP Media Center 2005
    Pentium D 2.8GHz
    024MB RAM
    Intel chipset
    Any help would be appriceated
    Tony

Try attaching the AC charger to your Touch and then plug it into the USB port - this has been known to get the computer to recognise the player and then you can re-install the firmware.?With regards to the pointless and unhelpful comments that have been posted on this thread (and elsewhere on the forum), what's the point? Of course there will be people wth poroblems here - that's what the forum exists for! All major electrical companies have units with faults, not just Creative (try googling Apple and see the 6 million websites dedicated to iPod problems!!!!). You fail to mention the thousands, if not millions of people using their Creative products with no problems. The opinions of one disgruntled customer is unlikely to deter informed people of making a decision to puchase from Creative. True, you have a right to your opinions and to express them, I'm just not sure this is the right place. This forum is intended to help people. Contact Creative directly if you to?have an issue, and get out of the way of those on this forum who are trying to HELP people.

  • Minor shock, static electricity on iPad 4

When I am using my iPad and touch the screen there is a minor shock sound, it sounds like a zip (static electricity). Could this be related to what is happening in China? Please help quickly.

this is normal behaivor and is usually just static build up. Recent reports on the unfortunate Chinese girl suggest she may have been using a counterfeit charger for her iPhone when the incident occurred.

  • Static electric on the new iPad when charging

When I'm charging the new iPad, touching on the back cover will give static electric. Would it damage the device in long run?

Made the mistake of using the Ipad when it was being charged (plugged into the electric outlet). Made the mistake of returning and picking up the Ipad after walking across a rug. Blew out that 5 Volt adapter which no longer would charge another suitable (5 Volt correct) device. Bought 10 Volt adapter which would not charge my Ipad as well.
iOS devices charge of USB specification that means 5 Volts ONLY.
A 10 Volt charger would damage the device.
I believe you are confusing Watts & Volts.
Many USB chargers have a higher amperage (that means they can supply more current, not Volts). That translates to more Watts (overall power output).
It allows iPads to charge faster because they have more battery to fill.
The standard iPad charger is 10Watts (the spec isn't visible on Apple.com, so this is from external sources).
iPhones usually have chargers that supply 5Watts
    The safest option…
Use an Apple charger that is rated for the device… as you can see Apple sell 5 Watt & 12 Watt supplies for iPads
http://store.apple.com/us/ipad/ipad-accessories/power (search for iPhone chargers etc).
None of this helps you speedgo, sorry. I don't know if static could cause issues. I would move it to another wall outlet, try other rooms - if it still happens take it to an Apple store & ask them for advice it may also happen at the store if the device or charger is faulty.

  • Is anyone having an issue with their iPhone5 where static electricity is cutting calls and launching music??

I have an iPhone 5. I live in Nebraska where it is cold and dry right now and static electricity is everywhere. I use the the original equipment earpods virtually always for calls. Within the last several weeks I've started to notice if I move around in a vehicle, or move about my office or home while on a call, I will sometimes hear a small hint of static through the headphones and then the phone call cuts off or ends and my music player will start playing a song. COMPLETELY ANNOYING. In doing some testing since the issue started, I have experienced this now without the earphones both using bluetooth devices OR just the phone itself. I hadn't contacted Verizon yet, which is usually my first call since it is a corporate phone, and thought I would try the forum first to see if anyone else is having a similar issue. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I just started having this yesterday.  It's only happened twice, but it's annoying.  My wife texted me that she was coming home last night, and it showed up immediately on my iPod Touch but not my iPhone. I opened my iPhone and it soon updated.  Worked fine after that.  Then just a moment ago today my wife texted me and the same thing happened.  I heard my iMac and iPod Touch receive the message but it didn't display on my phone until I opened the phone and it showed up again a little bit thereafter.  I suppose I'll send Apple some feedback on this issue.
