Zen Touch use without admin rig

hey everyone,
I'm a proud owner of a zen touch 20GB and have been very satified with it. I'm a high school student and have been lucky enough to li've in a place where the school provides each student with a high end dell laptop. For the year before I got my zen, I managed about 000 or so songs with WMP on my laptop. I don't have admin priviledges as it is a school computer, but I can take it home and whatever so it's as good as mine. When I got my zen I couldn't install the drivers and/or programs for transfer so I had to send all my files over to the home computer via the wireless network, quite a pain.
MY QUESTIONS IS: does anyone know of a way to install Nomad Explorer and/or the drivers for the Zen or somehow get the Zen to work with the school computers? They all have XP Pro SP and WMP0.
Any response would be appreciated seeings as it takes about a half hour to get songs onto it now and having it work with my laptop would be much easier. I'm an avid computer user and can program my way to it if I need to but there has to be an easier way
THANKS EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, so far that's what I've been doing, or when I'm at a place with no network, use my 52mb flash dri've or burn files to cds and move them, it just seems to be quite a hassle. Thanks for the advice Cat, you have a good point, but if there any word on when the new firmware for the Zen Touch that enables driverless integration with WinXP and WMP0 will be out? I can't wait, that should let it work on my laptop, I'll search the net for apps for transfer with Linux. Thanks! I really love my zen and use it every day, props to Creative for making the best mp3 player on the market, I couldn't li've without it, no problems so far!

  • Updated and smaller Zen Touch using Hitachi's newest C4k60 hard disk

The new Hitachi C4k60 hard disk is really small and is NOT inside the "actual" Zen Touch:
Zen Touch hard disk model (Hitachi): HTC424020F7AT00 (red it on a Zen Touch hard disk)
Hitachi C4k60 model: HTC426020G7CE00 (found it on Hitachi's website, that's the 20gb version, also available in 30gb)
Obviously, the 2 models aren't the same, and the new C4k60 is "much" smaller (physical size).
Anandtech's review of the Creative Zen Portable Media Center says that it uses a Hitachi C4k60 hard disk. So Creative are already using those new Hitachi hard disks for some of their products.
Is it possible that an updated version (smaller of course) of the Zen Touch using this new hard disk appears pretty soon? I really HOPE so...
I know that the Zen Touch isn't old, but other brands already have smaller 20gb mp3 players using Hitachi's new C4k60 hard disk, so I guess Creative is going to respond with an updated, smaller and even better looking Zen Touch (other improvements like a line-in, "standard removable dri've in windows" and EAX would be welcome to)!
Can someone confirm this, or give any details/information?

I just saw the archos gmini xs200 in a local shop, had it in hands:
it's really a nice player, and it's so small for a 20gb one, but from different online reviews, true battery life is only about 8hours and battery isn't removable. This sucks !!!
Well, i'm goin to wait for a new Zen Touch firmware enablling driverless windows support or an updated gmini xs 200 with a better or removable battery...
Still no new high capacity portable mp3 for me YET, lol !Message Edited by Lazar on 2-28-2004 :23 PM

  • Zen touch, using on a restricted c

Ok, heres the deal, I want to use my Zen Touch as a jump dri've, it can carry a good deal more than any jump dri've i have. The only problem is, i want to use it on a restricted account, therefore, it says i need to install hardware and yells at me. So I'm wondering if theres anything i can do to setup my dri've so when its first attached it functions as a data storage device instead of preparing to try and load music.
    any help appreciated...

The Touch doesn't have a removable disk mode like the Micro does, so will never show up as a dri've letter for data.
However, MTP support is coming soon, so if your PC has WinXP and WMP0 you should be able to still use it with a restricted account.

  • ZEN Agent install without admin rights

    Hi all,
Sorry to re-visit something I've seen a number of posts on, but I can't
seem to get things to work as I've been lead to believe they should. We
have a handful of systems that do not have any instance of the ZEN agent
installed, a mix of NT and XP (odd, I know). We are attempting to create
an automated process that will establish whether the agent is on the
system and if it is not, install it. Seems pretty straight forward and
I've been referencing the following suggestions. There are a number of
posts in the forums as well, but these were the most relevant.

    http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/se...?/10073212.htm
The problem is, despite what these instructions say, we cannot install the
agent without having local admin rights. All the batch files are in
place, and work, but ultimately the install fails. I've seen work arounds
for any OS later than NT, but its important that every system have the
    agent.
I've tried almost everything suggested in the links above but I am
primarily pursuing the batch file approach as detailed in...
    http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/se...?/10085696.htm
At what point are rights elevated such that the install can complete in an
    NT environment?
I am sure I'm forgetting some relevant details, so humor me please.
    Thanks in advance.
    Mike

I forgot that RunAs does not come with NT. ( It's available as an add-on,
but even that needs admin rights to install.)
Try PSExec from http://www.sysinternals.com, but I believe that will not
work either, but worth a shot.
Another outside shot is to push the "AlwaysInstallElevated" MSI installer
registry keys via a batch file.
Unfortunately, I doubt your logged on user has the rights to do this
    either..............
You may be stuck manually visiting and installing manually.

  • Zen Touch no longer uses fold

At some point after an update (not sure if it was firmware or an update to MediaSource as I have applied both in the last 2 months) my 20GB Zen Touch stopped storing music in logical artist/album folders. Instead it stores all music files in the root folder of the player.
I realise the player does not need folders to operate correctly, and that it organises the files by their ID3 tags, BUT...
It has a 20 Gigabyte storage capacity, and so if ALL the files go into a single root folder my poor PC struggles and hangs as it tries to list the files whenever I open up MediaSource. There are way too many files in a single folder for it to run smoothly.
It makes MediaSource almost unusable. Why has this been done, and how do I fix it's

Can you see any files on your Zen Touch using Windows Explorer? I have the latest driver installed on mine (with Windows XP), and all my music is still under "artist" folders under the "Media" folder. I don't use Mediasource. I always found it WAY too slow and clunky to use. I am using WMP now, which seems to work much better than MediaSource to synch music (and now creates playlists). As you know, WMP uses tags like the Zen itself, so you don't see or don't use folder structure. The only downside I've found to totally replacing MediaSource with WMIP is that I can't edit tags on the player itself without Mediasource. So, I just delete them, edit on PC and copy them back.

  • Problems with ripping files from my cds to Zen Touch via Mediasource pla

This is a problem I have had recently. I run Windows XP and have a Zen Touch which is a really decent player. However, just recently I have been unable to rip any CD tracks from my ample collection and put them on the Zen touch. I always get a little dialogue box which says CDrom doesn't support file ripping. Try the Recording function. It has done this even on CDs whose tracks I ACTUALLY put on the Zen touch already without any problem. Why is it doing this now?
I have tried re-installing the Zen touch cd a number of times but to no avail.
    Thanks

Thanks for that. I have been going around in frustration with this thing for a few nights. Even my husband is at a loss with it and he knows more about this stuff than I do.
I have effected a temporary solution to the problem which is to rip cd tracks using Nero Startsmart which converts them to MP3 no problem. I have also tried using the Media Player as well. Now all I have to do is download from the MP3 folder the tracks I have already ripped and load them onto the Zen.
What I don't understand about all of this is that the MediaSource Software was working okay until this month.

  • JHTTP/Notmad with New Zen Touch Firmw

Does notmad or any other program like jhhtp can do the http/webserver thing with the new firmware?Message Edited by lsd_us3r on -02-2005 02:4 AM

No they dont. The Zen Touch uses the MTP interface and doesn't use the Creative Zen drivers which those programs relied on. So when they are open it will tell you that the device is not connected.
RedChair should update Notmad soon, possibly in a few weeks time or sooner as they already have Duebox which support MTP for the Dell DJ's to go by so it shouldn't be hard for them to take what they did in Duebox and use it in Notmad.
JHTTP uses the Creative driver as a means of communicating with the Touch and since the new PFS firmware doesn't use the Zen driver it will not work.
Existing programs which do not require an update, but may need to download a plugin automatically, are Windows Media Player 0, Musicmatch 0+, and Real Player 0.5. WMP does not need any plugins to download. MM and Real Player will need to download a plugin but this is done within the program and is complete in a matter of seconds (about 300kb download if I can remember correctly).
The Zen plugin for Winamp will also no longer recognize the PlaysForSure Zen Touch.
The Zen Touch will also not work with Linux or Mac. XNJB for Mac does not support MTP as stated on its website, which will be updated soon to include the same message as the Zen Micro and other players have.
You are limiting yourself to a few select programs made by the large companies or those who have the money, like Red Chair, to use until third party or open source companies make something. And its been nearly a year now since the MTP players were released and I have yet to see many open source or free program by a small company be created to use, despite Microsoft releasing the MTP Porting Kit to make things a little easier for people to make a program which works. I have only seen one: Media Monkey, currently in a beta stage but it works at least with MTP players.Message Edited by DM on -02-2005 09:54 AM

  • Is there any way to use zen touch without being an admin on the comput

I looked for weeks and weeks with no solution. All I want is the simple
interaction between my 20GB zen touch and a pc with which I have
no admin priviliges. If I managed to get the files (nomad explorer/driver)
somewhere else would simply copying them over be enough to get it to work.
Or is it hopeless and you HAVE to be an admin? :smileysurprised:
Please helpMessage Edited by myname on 05-24-2005 03:8 PM

It works fine on my laptop but you know the way it is at work.
I thought I'd be able to download files and bring them home
to my laptop on the zen touch. ?260, 20GB and I can't even use
it to transfer files. Feck that :smileyvery-happy:

  • How to get Zen Touch to work on Windows Vista without PFS (worked!)

CHow to get Zen Touch to work on Windows Vista without PFS (worked!)? ***THIS WORKED***
For all of you that want to get their music out of the Zen touch, and are stuck with Vista and .0.03 firmware (non vista recognisable), and don't want to erase everything by installing the latest firmware, here is what worked for me:
)Uninstall every piece of Touch software you got and reboot.
    2) Download the latest drivers from Creative: JB3MV2...exe, together with the latest Nomad explorer, and the latest Notmad explorer from Red Chair (a trial is enough, version 9.0.3 currently).
    3) Right click the driver, properties, go to compatibility mode, and select Windows XP SP2. Make sure your Zen is unplugged (worked for me that way). Right click the driver installer again and Run as Administrator. It hanged around 72% for me, no biggy, open your task manager and shut the installer off.
4)Before rebooting, install Notmad explorer.(I installed only the Zen touch part of it. I tried to run it right away but got a 'cannot find explorer.exe error - again, no biggy).
    5) Reboot, plug in your Zen. Again for me, Notmad didn't work. This is what worked: Without messing up anything, install Nomad Explorer by Creative on top of it all, and reboot again.
    6) After reboot, with your Zen still plugged in, right click the little Notmad icon on the right part of the taskbar and select 'Connect Jukebox Zen'. And voila, check your explorer, it should hopefully recognise the Zen Touch like windows xp would.
If you still run into trouble, just install stuff from the beggining, making sure Compatibility: WinXP SP2 and Run as Admin are used everywhere, and keep rebooting till it hopefully works.
Best of luck. edit: Using Winamp to transfer files worked as well.

I am afraid Creative Cloud desktop app is not compatible with Windows Vista. If you run into problems there are very limited resources from Adobe to assist.

  • Zen Touch CD lost, can't use zen touch on

I lost my CD with the software for my mp3 zen touch, so I don't have mediasource.
My question is: how can I transfer music between my mp3 en my pc without the software?
I know you can download nomad explorer but if you want to use nomad explor you have to install the software first.
    Who can help me?
    Kasumi

The problem is that I have nothing of the software installed and you've to install first the software from the cd before you can download en install something from the site. When I try to install mediasource or nomad explorer from the internet my pc says that there is no previous version installed.
So I don't know what I have to do.

  • Using Zen Touch as external hardd

    Hi there,
I just wanna know, if it is possible to use the zen touch mp3 player as an external harddisc. I wanna connect it to the computer and then just drag and drop songs on the dri've. Normally it is not possible, but I heard about a firmware update that can make it possible. Now, is it true or not?
    Thank you!

If you are asking this because you are considering on buying it then look else where, it totally sucks as an external hard dri've. You have to install the drivers everywhere you plan to use the player and also install the nomad explorer to be able to transfer data to it. On tops of that the nomad explorer is not bug free, including one bug which erases the file extension if the file name has more than one '.' in it. If you have a file called maria.full.of.grace.avi and one called maria.full.of.grace.mp3 both will be copied as maria.full.of.grace in the player. This is a problem when you have multiple file in a folder with relati've the same name and try to copy that folder.
A firmware with MTP support was promise to be release before you died, but when exactly before you do no one does and wouldn't base buying the player on this promise. MTP would allow you to transfer mp3's a files to your Zen Touch without having to install drivers for it, but still you will need to have Windows Media Player 0 or above to enable MTP on your computer, so if you go to someone's computer and it doesn't have wmp0 you will need to install it, requirring WMP0 also means that it won't work on win2000 since wmp0 is not supported in win2000.Message Edited by lsd_us3r on 07-0-2005 09:24 PM

  • How do I use the maintenance service to upgrade PCs without admin rights?

Our users do not have admin rights on their systems so FireFox is WAY out of date. I read about the Maintenance Service in the wiki and hoped it might allow FireFox to update itself without admin rights. I installed v21 and FireFox does not update itself so I am not sure what to make of things. In fact, it does not even seem to try since click in on Help, About shows "Updates available at http://www.firefox.com"
I have seen some postings indicating others have experienced similar issues with not being able to update as "users", but no solution. I really do NOT want to require our folks use Chrome, which works without any users given its design. Suggestions?

The maintenance service can only be installed by someone that has administrator permissions (you get an UAC alert), so you can only use this service for updating in the background if someone with administrator permissions has installed this service (maintenanceservice_installer.exe).

Hello, wondering if you can help me out with the question above, and if you know how to make it work. If you could help me i'd be grateful.

You can use the Zen Touch with the Xbox 360, but you would have to update the firmware on the player to an MTP (2.x) firmware. This will slightly change the way the player works on the PC. For more information on MTP, check this knowledgebase article.
