    ". should be able to, using the CF adapter thingie, I think"
    That is on the full sized Vision, not the Vision M.

  • Zen Micro Lockup - Hard disk failu

    Zen Micro froze while playing an MP3 file. Had to remove battery to reboot. Can hear the hard disk seeking ~25 times during powerup before it freezes at the "CREATIVE" logo screen. Rescue mode commands - reformat/reboot/disk clean up has no effect. Can't hear any hard disk activity when unit held close to ear.
    Firmware version is v0.0.56. Hard disk had ~750KB of free space. Unit was sitting still on desk at time of failure. Used less than 2 weeks.
    Aside: Have experienced several lockups with this device during playback and docking. All were resolved by removing battery. Firmware seems to be very buggy.
    Already logged a formal e-mail support request. Wonder if anybody has experience similar failures.

    You do hear of them from time to time. It might be that the heads have jammed, in which case you can try the advice here at your *own risk*.

  • Zen vsision M - hard disk error

    MP3 got slightly wet and after working for a while stopped working. Have tried Clenup, Farmat all and even uploading the firmware again - which failed. All I get is hard disk error.
    Is there anything else I can try please as it was an expensi've player and my favourite to date.

    Water & electronics do not mix. How did you dry out the player after the water incident? Chances are the hardri've may have rusted . You will not be able to reload firmware or anything for that matter

  • Any Softwares for copying from Zen Vision to Hard Dri

    hey! Do u know if there are any free softwares that would allow me to copy the staff i have on my zen vision back to my computer? (i just had a format and lost everything!)

    Hi,
    Well Media Source will handle media files (free from Creatives site). Rgegarding data and if you have a USB 2.0 port you can just use XP's Windows Explorer to access the media and data folders.
    Hope this helps,

  • Noise from hard disk

    Hi, everyone.
    I bought a new mackbook pro in this Jan. Recently, I hear some not continuously noise from hard disk, especially when i open a file in hard disk or verify the hard disk. Is something wrong with my hard disk?
    Thanks

    This hard disk clicking is a know problem for many laptops. If you search it on Google, you will find a lot of discussions about it in the Unbuntu Linux forums. In most cases, it is due to the Advanced Power Management (APM) feature of notebook hard drives. The default APM settings of these drives are aggressive so as to extend notebook battery life. As a consequence, the HD tries to park its actuator head to the ramp whenever it judges the system as idle. However, OS X or some third-party applications may access the hard disk quite often, resulting in a park/unpark cycle every few seconds.
    Every of these cycles is counted as one load/unload cycle. Most notebook drives support up to 600,000 load/unload cycles. If a hard drive parks its head every few seconds, it may shorten its life by "using up" the cycles more quickly.
    I had the same problem on my Powerbook with a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 80GB PATA drive. I heard the frequent clicking sound right after I installed it into the laptop. The SMART status appeared to be Verified, and there was no problem with the drive itself. After searching on Google and Hitachi web site, I found the causes and solved the problem using the Hitachi Feature Tool. For other HD brands, I have no experience at all.
    Basically, Travelstar 5K160 drives have three idle modes, from which a user can set one as the deepest idle state:
    1) Active Idle: the actuator head is parked near the center of the disk, and power usage is 45-55% less than performance level. Recovery time to active mode is about 20ms.
    2) Low Power Idle: this is usually the factory default idle mode. The head is UNLOADED to the ramp and the power consumption is 60-65% less than the performance level. Recovery time is about 300ms.
    3) Low RPM idle: in this idle mode, the hard disk will spin down to a lower RPM speed. More power is saved but recovery time is much longer. (I can hear the disk spin down and spin up again a few times per minute. There is also a lag in system reaction time.)
    To get rid of the hard disk clicking, you need to set Active Idle as the deepest APM idle mode. To do it on a Hitachi hard disk, you need Hitachi Feature Tool, and a Windows laptop with the same HD interface as your drive (PATA or SATA). Sadly, the feature tool is only for Windows and Linux.
    You can download Hitachi Feature Tool 2.10 as an ISO image here: http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#FeatureTool and burn it into a bootable CD. The userguide of the tool is available on the same page.
    Then, take out your hard drive from your Macbook and install it into a Windows laptop. Boot the machine using the Feature Tool bootable CD. Choose "Change Advanced Power Mode" from the drop-down menu.
    The default value is 128 (Low Power Idle). Just increase the value toward Performance, until you see the APM mode over the value bar becomes Active Idle (starting from 192). Click OK and Exit the feature tool. Switch off the Windows laptop and take out the hard disk. Install it into your Macbook. You will not hear the clicking sound again when system is idle. The lowest APM mode will be Active Idle and hence the drive will not park its head to the ramp during operions.
    If your hard drive is a Hitachi Travelstar 5K160, you can find the 5K160 specifications version 1.1 from Hitachi web site. On page 69 of the document, it explains the APM idle modes. On page 145 about the register values of the APM modes.
    To set Active Idle as the deepest idle mode may adversely affect battery life. (I haven't yet tested it myself) However, there seem not to be a big difference than the Low Power Idle, according to the datasheet of 5K160. For this model, power consumption of Active Idle is 0.8W, while that of Low Power Idle is 0.6W, on average.
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Big Probelms, Mt theory is its the hard disk

    So i had to force shutdown last night on my macbook, it was running basic apps, mail, firefox, msn. so when i went to boot up i got a blank grey screen and the hard disk clicked twice.
    I need to get the files off this disk but my macbook wont even go to target disk mode, when i boot from the install cd disk utility and system profiler dont even recognise the hard disk connected.
    if i call apple will they send me a new hard disk in the post nd take back the old one or do i have to go and send the whole machine to apple ?
    PS. People in Ireland, dont use mactivate, they ruined my macbook !!!

    Only Apple can be the judge of how things will ship. Call their AppleCare number directly to find out:

    Clicking hard drive is often a sign of a dying hard drive. But only an authorized service technician can know for certain. Here's my backup FAQ:

  • HELP: Vision M freezes at "ZEN" display, "hard disk error" at formatting.

    Greetings!?After watching a recently uploaded video, my ZVM suddenly froze. I?tried resetting the button but that didnt do anything.
    Afterwards, I?tried to?clean up,? erase/ renew the firmware, and finally- format. While doing all of the above,? I noticed that it took ages to do so and it appears that the ZVM didnt change at all.. I still see the V.6.0_0.0.23 on the Recovery mode even after the cleanup, and after the "supposed" format. I don't think it responded to anything I did at all.. What is wrong??All the while, my computer is able to "dock" the ZVM, albeit intermittently... However, when I try to renew/ upgrade the firmware.. IT FAILS
    !!! When I reset, it remains stuck at the "ZEN" screen...
    When I try to format,? the "HARDISK FAILURE" flashes?for about second towards the end...
    Now Im stuck... What do I do next??My beloved ZVM is only ?3 WEEKS OLD, and it hurts me to think that its already busted!!?I always took care of my ZVM, never dropped it at all..
    It still looks?fresh and brand new!
    ?Worse of all, I got it'sin Hong kong during Christmas. I can't go back there again, despite the fact that I still have the reciept
    !!! I am now in Manila Philippines and I don't know if the?Creative supplier here will?ever honor my HongKong warranty.... Help!!?Rainmanph

    I had the same problem with my daughter's Zen. I bought it a month before Christmas and played with it until then. She had it one week and I went through the same thing you did. When I contacted support and they heard the word hard disk failure, I was told to send it back for a replacement where I bought it or I could send it to them for repair. I was able to get a replacement and after what I went through and reading the problems that some people have had, I will be getting the extended warranty from Creative Labs.

  • What type of hard drive do I need for a Creative Zen Vision

    Hey everybody.
    I have a Creative Zen Vision:M, and unfortunately after dropping it, the hard drive has decided to pack up!
    I have decied to replace the hard dri've, but wondered which hard dri'ves are compatible with the Zen Vision:M? I know the hard drive is a .8" drive, but that's all I know what to look for so far...
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi,
    It uses a standard 2.5" HDD. You can find them around in any good computer shop. You can use larger (capacity) as well. If you wish to find exactly the same one please try:
    (a) Open Device Manager,
    (b) Expand Disk drives item
    You can see brand and model of the current HDD on your computer. If it failed already, pull it out and check.
    Regards.

  • Creative Zen Player Hard Disk Problem!

    There's a problem with my Zen player.
    I was listening to music when suddenly it hanged and became very warm.
    After recharging the battery, the zen player did not load properly and instead listed out 4 options for me to choose:
    Clean Up
    Format All
    Reload Firmware
    Reboot
    Rebooting doesnt help at all.
    Clean up refuses to work and nothing happens when I press yes.
    Format All gives me an error. Says that it is a harddisk error.
    Reloading Firmware is impossible because Creative MediaSource Organizer cannot detect my Zen player when I plug in onto the computer. It also says that there is a harddisk error.
    Is there anything I can do? Can I get a refund? I hope this will not happen again because my Zen player is only around 2~3 months old and this shows that Creative Zen players have poor hardware. I hope I need not retract my praises of Creative's Zen player.Message Edited by lijuliju on -7-2005 0:59 PM

    Your faulty player does not equate to Creative having poor hardware. Be realistic.
    Hard disk problem error not surprisingly indicates there is a problem with the hard disk, so contact support to get a replacement (click the link Support > Downloads on this page).

  • Clicking noise from hard disk

    Hello forum,
    one more hard disk noise problem. My new MPB arrived two days ago and I immediately noticed a clicking noise that is presumably emitted by the hard disk. I've got the basic 250GB model, so it's unrelated to the 500GB noise. The sound occurs quite regularly every 20sec or so, but only when the disk is inactive. The system doesn't freeze. The noise appears regardless whether the disk power saving feature is enabled or not. Here is an amplified version of the sound without the normal background noise (fan, hard disk):
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/ah25f1h/n/ClickingNoise_wav
    I've learned that clicking noises are a certain sign of hard disk failure. So should I return it immediately and ask for a replacement?
    Regards

    MKG4 wrote:
    It sounds like you've got two clicking noises happening back to back, correct? I have the new 250GB drive as well (5400 RPM) and I'm hearing a periodic click similar to the second one in your clip.
    I can hear only the second click, too. Only if I mute the background noise and amplify my recording, I hear the first one. Could you perhaps take a record of the sound that your MBP makes so that we can compare the sounds?
    Haven't noticed any other problems with the drive, though. Is yours a Fujitsu? Mine is, and according to their web site, "if the drive is idle it will automatically move the heads periodically to prevent lubricant migration." I'm wondering if that's what the noise is.
    Interesting. Mine is a Fujitsu, too, and perhaps the two noises come from the disk head starting and parking.
    Actually, it sounds a lot like the 500GB noise, except without the beep. I've seen very few, if any, issues with the 250GB drive, but I'm holding out hope that a fix may come along at some point.
    I agree. Currently the sound doesn't seem to be harmful, but one never knows.

  • Save the contents into hard disk on click of Save As button in Swing

    Hi,
    I have a JButton "Save As". On clicking the button, the contents in the JTextArea should be saved in the local hard disk by opening a Save As dialog box and allowing the user to save in any location.
    Is it possible to do this? If so, please inform me how it could be done.

    Please find the code below.

    w.setTitle("Log Window");
    w.setSize(330,500);
    final JTextArea jt = new JTextArea();

    jt.setLineWrap(true);
    jt.setText("Records not available for the id's"+"\n"+stb);
    jt.setBounds(10,10,285,500);
    final JButton jbSave = new JButton("Save File As");
    JPanel spacer = new JPanel();
    spacer.setMinimumSize(new Dimension(50, 18));
    spacer.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(50, 18));
    JPanel jpButtons = new JPanel();
    jpButtons.add(jbSave);
    jpButtons.add(spacer);

    JScrollPane scroll = new JScrollPane();
    c.setLayout(new BorderLayout());
    c.add(jt,BorderLayout.CENTER);
    c.add(jpButtons, BorderLayout.SOUTH);
    jbSave.addActionListener(new ActionListener()

    JFileChooser fileChooser = new JFileChooser();
    int userOption = fileChooser.showSaveDialog(null);
    if(userOption == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION)
    //*******************STATEMENTS TO BE ADDD****************** }
    jt.getText()-----This is how I can get the contents from JTextArea.
    But how I can save the contents. i.e on click of Save As button, Save dialog box opens, and I can choose the location and give the name. but if I go to the location I don't find the file....
    Please guide me to finish this....

  • Clicking/tickling sound from hard disk

    my macbook pro is making a slight, low tickling sound from right side of trackpad, probably the hard disk. this freaked me out, should I be worried ? I heard it on other laptops, but it's getting really frequent today, is it faulty ?
    Message was edited by: phantom 3444

    I've got a new Macbook Pro 13" for less than 2 weeks. After a few days of the 1st week, i noticed the "click" sound (occurs every 30 second) from the bottom right of the MBP. I thought it's hard disk problem hence i call Apple and sent it to the authorized repair center. They checked and they ordered a hard disk replacement (not sure if they agree if it's a hard disk failure). I've waited for a week but was impatient, so i decided to get a new Western Digital 500gb 5400RPM HDD and the MBP back without the replacement hdd from Apple.
    The result, no sound during installation of Snow Leopard but after using it for one day, the click sound came back. I'm pretty sure it's not a hard disk faulty issue. Can anyone advise on how to solve this ? I've read that it may be due to the hdapm issue, but does anyone notice this problem too ? Thanks.

  • Scary clicks... pending hard disk failure?

    This morning, our iMac would not boot. After turning it on, I heard a series of three clicks (as if it was trying to start spinning something), and then appeared a screen with a blinking lightgrey folder icon.
    I inserted the Install CD and did a hardware test, which did not detect any problem. After this, the computer booted again. While I was logged, I used the Disk Utility to verify the disk, again no problem. I switched the computer off.
    Later, when I turned it on, the same problem happened: a series of three clicks followed by a blinking folder icon. I booted from Install CD and canceled the installation process. After this, the computer booted from the hard drive normally.
    Next, I came back to the computer (I had not shut it down) and logged in. At that point, I heard the now infamous clicks again.
    I am predicting that the hard disk is about to fail. Is this indeed the case? Or would it be some other component? Is there some utility that I could use to detect what is wrong?
    Thanks for your help.
    Best,
    David.

    Well, as other posters here have noted, your internal drive is failing but I can't see why you can't select an external for boot up without the internal trying to mount afterwards. That part sounds like maybe the System software somehow got corrupted while the internal was in the process of failing. If you can't boot up into the external drive cleanly next time, maybe you should consider doing an archive and install of your system software to clean things up. Painful thought, I know but besides chewing up some of your time I don't see how it could hurt and it just may solve the problem. There IS, after all, a long weekend coming up
