Zen Vision M VS Video Ipod

<SPAN class=postbody>I've been wondering what the lucky ones that already have bought a Zen Vision M think of it ?I got to upgrade my Ipod Photo and was wondering if i should either go for the Ipod Video or Zen Vision M. Both look like they are good players and i've purchased quite a few models from Creative but resorted to go with the ipod cause size does matter to me plus I must say the interface from what my ZEN NX was a fabulous upgrade. But now I wonder if i should jump back with Creative. I know the ZEN NX is outdated and wanted to know how the new model compared to the 5G Ipod. I understand that few already have one in their hands so I thought this would be the best place to ask.
<SPAN class=postbody>I've looked alot on the net for comparaison websites and i've found so far just one here that gives a Ipod 5G VS Creative Zen Vision M review. Anyone got another more complete website perhaps ? Or perhaps one of you first hand tried both ?Would love to have an honest and unbiased advice.thanks!

Well, if size is important to you, then the iPod 30GB is your best choice. The new 30GB iPod is less than half an inch thick, which makes the Zen Vision: M nearly twice as thick. The 60GB iPod is only as thick as the iPod mini was.
The Zen Vision: M claims twice as much battery life for video as the 30GB iPod, using 500kbps MPEG-4. Apple's battery life rating is based on H.264 video encoded at 768kbps for video and 28kbps audio. That's nearly 900kb
ps.
Apple always bases their battery life claims off of what they sell at the iTunes Music Store, and that is what the video they sell is encoded at.
The iPod DOES support H.264 video. The Zen Vision: M does not. This means that you can get a video down to about 480kbps (384 video 96 audio). Go here http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/ and test it out for yourself. Video at that bitrate looks fantastic. Much much much better than WMV, divx/xvid, or standard MPEG-4 at that bitrate. You can get the same quality as xvid/divx, or MPEG-4 at half the bitrate with H.264. WMV is just too bad to even look at when talking about those bitrates.
Get the iPod. Use H.264, get better image quality or the same image quality at lower bitrates with longer battery life. Get a smaller player. Be happy.

• ZEN Vision M 30GB Video Conversion problem: black scr

My husband cannot display any video on his ZEN Vision M 30 GB. Any video converted comes over with ONLY audio, black screen (? no video display )This happened with the original firmware and software. I updated firmware and did all available software updates; no change. I had a previous ZEN Vision M 30GB, which did not have any problem with video conversion and display. Are there any known problems with specific Media Player versions, or QuickTime ?which may be a potential cause of this problem?( I have heard that this product works best with Media Player 9. )Anyone had similar problems, or have any ideas? Thanks,Ravenquille

Problem apparently solved: Last night, I downloaded and installed the free program, SUPER. My husband has not had a problem so far; been working beautifully! Ravenquille

• Creative Zen Vision: M 30GB Video Upload Tutor

I understand the concept of upload vids to my MP4 player but just how do I go about copying DVDs to my hard-dri've then to my device, any tutorials would be much appreciated. I only really want to put a couple of episodes of Jackass, Wildboys or Dirty Sanchez on, and maybe a couple of free music video discs I've got with a couple of Victory Records CD's I've bought previously. I've tried many online links I've managed to copy a DVD to my hard-dri've using '**bleep*' which I was reccomended to use, just don't know if I have to convert it. Any advice, information, links, suggestions much appreciated. Thanks all. Josh.Message Edited by Dale-CL on 0-9-2007 05:0 PM

It is illegal in the US and many other countries CL operates in to break the encryption on a DVD, which is what the software you mentioned does. We cannot allow discussion of illegal DVD ripping on this forum, sorry.

• Zen Vision M - Ipod adap

Anyone know if there is an adapter on the market that will allow you to plug a zen vision M into an IPOD style speaker-system?

I've bought a Zen vision:m by Amazon in USA a brought it to Brazil, and guess: no power adapter. I've mailed Creative because in the manual, on page 4, the customer is instructed to fully charge the bateries by using a power adapter. The answer was a list of what I should get in the box, and the list does not include the power adapter.
So I think that at a first moment it was included and later on Creative decided to exclude it but did not update their instalation manual.
The power input in the ZVM is for 5V-DC and I have on 5V adapter. But to make sure I will use it right I would like to know whether the adapter provided by Creative has the negati've pole at the external ou in the internal part of the output jack.
If someone who has the adapter and has a multimeter could check this for me I would appreciate.

• Creative ZEN Vision:M or 5th Generation iPOD Video ?

So which one would you pick? The ZEN or the iPOD. Yes, I know most people would say the ipod since this is an apple board but this ZEN Vision:M business is pretty awesome.
If you had the option to return your ipod and get the ZEN Vision, would you ? I mean, come on, look at this thing. Its a beast !
I also wanted to ask if anyone owns this thing ? i wanna ask a few questions about. i.e. battery life (since the ipod totally wreaks in that subject), compatability, other things..

Re: 4 hours playback... See my explanation about how Creative arrived at their playback times vs. how Apple arrived at theirs. If you want to listen to 64kbps WMA files, and watch 500kbps MPEG4 video, go right ahead. You could get the same result on your iPod listening to 64kbps AAC files and watching 500kbps MPEG4 video.
Re: double the songs... again, see my explanation about how Creative arrived at their 15,000 number vs. how Apple arrived at their 7,500 number (hint: 64kbps WMA files vs. 128kbps AAC files)
Re: more audio formats... yes. the Vision:M adds the ability to play WMA files (the iPod can play MP3 and WAV files)
Re: more video formats... yes. The Vision:M adds the ability to play MPEG1/2, WMV9, Motion-JPEG, and XviD.
Re: FM radio, recorder, voice recorder, yes. Points to Vision:M.
Re: iPod's batter turning red with 2 hours left to go... the battery meter is an estimate, nothing more. If it really bothers you and you can't ignore it, put a piece of black electrical tape over it. My battery meter is fairly accurate, but I've ran my iPod completely dead and charged it up completely 2x since I've bought it. Seems to have helped.
Re: scratching issue.. seems like there were a few people on those engadget posts that were complaining about their Zen (non-vision:M) scratching up pretty bad. My guess is the Vision:M will have the same problems (but that's a guess).
So, summary... If you need a FM radio/recorder, or a voice recorder, or don't want to transcode video you already have in a supported Vision:M format, or have your audio in WMA format, and are willing to deal with the extra width and cost, then the Vision:M might be for you. Be aware that Creative's battery life numbers are even more unapplicable to real-world use than Apple's are (I don't know of anyone that listens to 64kbps music anymore, and who would encode their video at 500kbps MPEG4?).

• Ipod video vs. zen vision

i have a 4th gen ipod 20gb that i am selling. I was looking into the zen vision: M or ipod Video. I download a lot of xvid movies/TV shows. Ofcourse I will use this for music as well, but my main concern is the video. Does the Ipod video support XVid's like the Vision does. Are there any other mp3 players out there that compare?
Also, does anyone out there use the Zen Vision in there cars, I know IPod's are pretty popular in the car.
Any help would do in making my desicion, thanks.

I was also deciding the what will be my next MP3 player. I used a Neeon about a year ago, and switched over to 4G ipod. I am doing buying reaseach and that lead me to this site again in search for a reason to buy a Creative's ZVM, which I really want to support.
I like ipod that it just works and its elegent way of integrating with PC's iTune, podCast, videocast. I am a bit worry about reliability of ZVM based on its numerous problems reported. I can OK with its chunky body and plastic material surface.
However, if you main concern is video, I suggest you skip ipod video because, unlike ZVM, video is not ipod main selling point. Its screen is less idae for video and it supports only two video formats (MP4 & H264). For me, the strategy is to wait till Creative irons out all the problems of ZVM, or new video ipod arri've, whichever come first.

• APPLE IPOD VIDEO 80 GB$349 VS. ZEN VISION W $

What Would Be The Better Deal? How About Comparisions Between The 2?

Vision W's price is now $300. And to compare them, read the reviews on Cnet.com. Also consider the Zen Vision:M rather than the iPod, it is much better.

• How to save video to play on Creative Zen Vision M

My (PC using) friend just bought a Creative Zen Vision M (the competitor to the video iPod). It will play MPEG1, 2, and 4SP and will play MPEG's created in an older version of iMovie (I forget which, it's been a few years). For some reason, the MPEG4 version created by iMovie HD6 is not compatible with the Zen player.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to export from iMovie HD 6 in a format that can be used by the Creative Zen Vision M?
Thanks.

>Hi,
Sorry about your ZEN Vision:M. From what you mentioned, I don't think the data is recoverable under normal means. You probably might want to take it to a technician? or someone who is familar with electronics to see if they can remove the harddisk from the ZEN Vision:M and recover the data.

• Zen Vision M vs iPod 3

<FONT face="Comic Sans MS" color=#0033ff size=3>Which one is better? Alot of the features are similar. I don't know which one to get. Pros and Cons?

Took this from my older post..........
Hi there,
Here are some things that you might like over the ipod:
*TV out screen resolution (twice the resolution), can use VidX at near-DVD res.
*Colors of the screen 262k compared to 65k. Honestly, a superior screen.
*video playback time
*codec support(WMV9/DivX/VidX/MPEG4)
*extra features: FM, recording, etc.
*picture viewing - zoom and pan
*custom equalizer
*Screen is able to resize video
*No advanced conversion ala ipod, drag and drop video
*Scratches are not as bad as ipod
*Superior sound quality(97db)
* hour better battery life then ipod, twice as much for video
*Support for the WMA, DRM stores
* Customizable Themes and Backgrounds. Customizable screen brightness/other screen features.
With the upload process, you have a choice between programs. You can use WMP 0, Zen Vision M Explorer or MediaSoruce. I have perfect ID3 tags, so I just drag and droped my music on the ZVM with no problem. I also draged and droped my videos with no conversion.
The interface is exactly(almost) the same as the ipod. It is a ID3-based hierarchy. Extremely easy to go through music. The scroll is nice, you can adjust the sensitivy.

• Creative zen vision m: video cable help!!! PLZZ

:smileyindifferent:hi, i reallly need to know how to connect the cable to the tv and the vision m.
i have tried it on many channels but i dont knw they dont work. do u have to
go to a speical place in the mp3 and click sumthin like connect to tv or what?
please if sum knws please help me!! im waitin for a reply.....:smileyindifferent:

The creative cable is not standard. You cannot use standard 3.5mm to 3xRCA AV cables. There are instructions on this forum on how to convert a standard AV cable to one that is compatible with the player.
More information on how the cable is wired is avaliable . Not my image, someone else on the forum created it, found it in this post.
There is an article on .
These are the instructions I followed to make my own cable from a standard AV cable. I can't remember who wrote it (Sorry who ever it is), so I don't pretend to take any of the credit for writing it:
Ok here is step by step (i don't have @ home atm digi photo, so i can't do shots)...
Things u'll need:
* AV cable ( 4pole mini jack -to-> 3 RCA yello', red, white)
* knife/scalpel/isolation removal tool...lighter can be a easiest way to remove isolation (when applied gently)
* isolation tape
terms:
GROUND (shield, minus, negati've) = outer wire in the cables, stronger one
HOT (plus, chnl,etc..) = inner smaler wire, caryin' signal
RCA (phonos, cynch,etc..) = those plugs u can find on most of the audio video equipment
MINI JACK (walkman jack, small banana) = can be mono, stereo or audio/video (4 poles)
It's your choice on what part of cable u want to do rewiring (close to the mini jack or close to the RCA's)
I'll describe here easier way (close to the mini jack):
- cutoff the cable close to the mini jack (leave jack with about 8-0cm of cable)
2 - remove isolation on all three cables from both sides (RCA's n mini jack)
- u should remove isolations (2-3cm) of shield/ground (outer wire) and from hot (inner wire)
- on the mini jack side: leave the RED one cable longer than yellow n white
3 - on the mini jack side: remove ground (outer wire) on YELLOW and WHITE cables and isolate
4 - on the mini jack side: remove isolation on the RED hot (inner wire) a bit longer, this is your new ground for all three RCA's, be careful that ground n hot on RED doesn't contatc so isolate em
5 - on the RCA's side: put/twist all three grounds into one wire
6 - wire RED from the jack side to the GROUND of RCA's side (look @ step 5)...isolate
7 - on the mini jack side wire RED cable's GROUND to the YELLOW's cable HOT on the RCA side, isolate
8 - on the mini jack side wire YELLOW cable's HOT to the RED HOT on the RCA side, isolate
9 - on the mini jack side wire WHITE cable's HOT to the WHITE HOT on the RCA side, isolate
0-isolate everythin' properly
enjoy ;-)

• There's video problems with my Zen Vision:M already (M video cable related) Please help

Some background...
System:Windows XP with Service Pack 2.
Player: Brand new Creative Zen Vision: M with no firmware updates.
My Zen Vision:M has a problem (besides the scratch and fingerprint attracting top surface): It won't play videos on a TV screen when the M Video Cable (also from Creative) is linked to it anymore. It's only been a few hours...
I had the cable already, and got the player today. I let the player charge to /4th of a battery while I was setting up all the software. I ran the software programs just to take a peek, only changing the name of my player (to my name). I used Winamp 5.3 to put a music track on the player to test it. After that, I hooked it up to the VCR in my room through the white and yellow A/V plugs in front. It worked just fine. It to the tv a little large, but I was okay with it.
Later on today, the new AC charger I ordered came in the mail (Player came through UPS, charger through USPS). I looked at my old charger (Creative Zen Touch) and realized it would work with the plug-in part of the sync unit at the bottom. I tested it for a minute and it did. I still took it out and tried the new one. This is where, I think, something happened. I had to press the sides to get the thing in, and it was hard to come out. Everything still fit just right, and nothing seemed to be wrong. I used my old charger as I added more of my music library. Now it was on to videos. I had to convert the first two test vids (they were .wmv), but they played on my player fine. I put a bigger .wmv file onto the player to see if it had to convert it, and it did. It still played on the player. When I go to hook it to the TV with the A/V cord again, there was nothing but a black screen with the occasional diagonal scan line. The sound is still there.
Besides quirks with the navigational system, the player is still great for music and video. Still, I needed no video capability, and one of the things that made the ZVM a buy for me was watching my vids on the big screen. I'd return this for a second try, but I want to know if this is a recurring issue with you guys and if there's something I can do to fix it before a return. Did I mess with a setting? Should I get new firmware? Did I do wrong using my old charger? If any of you have an answer, or need more info on my situation, please let me know.
And BTW, does anyone know of some better software for organizing files on the ZVM? I used Winamp for my Zen Touch and the music on my ZVM, but videos are another ballpark. I can't transfer a video from one folder to another folder (assuming both folders are on the ZVM). Not to mention the music I transferred using Winamp isn't even showing up in Windows Media Player. I think I need a different program altogether.

I have got a new Creative Zen Vision W and getting the same problem....when i attach to the tv then i am able to hear the audio content and the video does not show. Are we missing something ? or is it a problem with the player. Also the software provided with the Zen converts small .vob files to .wmv when ever the size is large it gives an error 'conversion?unsucessful'.Any body facing similar problems please help.

• Video Playing problem (Zen Vision M 60

I just got my 60gb zen vision M for christmas and i started transfering files right away to test out its playback quality etc
When i get to video particularly my anime video it plays the first 5 or so seconds and then freezes... no sound and no video.
The video is a naruto video from dattebayo fansubs. I think it is divx encoded (will double check to make sure)
What should i do to solve this issue?
I have not tried any other video's as yet but will do so soon

**bleep** it looks like it's slight differences in the encoding of the files that determin whether or not they play
I used Bleach episode coded by Lunar and that worked fine.
If it is down to minor differences in encoding that's causing this problem, surely it should be fixed as soon as possible, because of the massi've amount of different ways of encoding the player isn't really fit for avi playback if it's this temperamental :/
*UPDATE*
I've looked at the bleach file that works and the Naruto file that doesn't work in GSPOT.
There are a few very minor differences that I don't really understand but the one that jumps out at me is the container:
The naruto files that don't work have the container 'Multipart OpenDML AVI, "rec list" style DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI (223 frames in first part, 639 frames follow)' and the bleach file that works is 'OpenDML (AVI v2.0) DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI'
I've bolded what I think the problem is, would those 223 frames (first part) be the 8/9 seconds before it freezes?
Could this be the problem?
*FURTHER UPDATE*
The naruto file that has the line 'First part 223' lasts 9 seconds whereas another file that has the line '(205 frames in first part, 32998 frames follow)' lasts 8.
I'm almost certain this is what the problem is.......any chance of a firmware fix for the avi playback not supporting multipart AVI files?

• Zen Vision M Video Out to TV problem (with proprietary cable!)

I am the original owner of a 60 GB Zen Vision M that works perfectly. I have purchased the proprietary A/V cable for the unit when I purchased it but never had occasion to use it. I now have a flat panel display on which I should like to display video files. The information screen says it has version .2.02 (I assume that?s firmware.)
Customer support for the product is no longer available. I have set the video out to ?auto NTSC? I have wonderful sound but nothing shows on the screen from the yellow RCA video plug that comes out of the same white cable from Creative. UI have connected it to several different sets, two of which are older tube sets. No luck.
Any help here?
Thanks.

Anyone tried holding down power and pressing the reset at the same time. Then after hit clean up from the recovery menu. I was told to do that but i havent tried test it out on tv output yet.
Warning: it clears all the settings in your zen player. (Custom eq, menus, all zen settings)
