Zen Xtra 2.10.03 firmware track li

I've heard that this upgrade limits you to 7000 tracks no matter how much free memory you have available. Is this true? I have a 60gb Xtra with nearly 3,000 tracks. Is there anyone out there who has this firmware version and much more than 7000 tracks?

I had up to 9,600 titles on my zen xtra 60GB before I upgraded to 2.0.03. Everything worked fine with the old firmware version. I used Redchair's Notmad Explorer too....
Then - 3 weeks ago - I UNFORTUNATELY upgraded to 2.0.03 and with this a chain of unsolvable problems went in...
It seems that there's a limit at about 9,00 titles even if there' free space of 3GB...if I want to load up more titles it could be done: beginning at a number of already 9,06 exixting tracks i loaded up the titles by with Creative MediaSource 5 ! sometimes up to 7 at a time but then it's necessary to restart MediaSource or in most cases the laptop!!! Because of an error message that there should be no free space any more. What a sh.tty crap!!! Can U imagine how long it takes for about 500 more tracks? And now after 2 weeks uploading day by day the player crashed down for a minute. Result: some hundred tracks got lost - somewhere between A - Z. And there was it again: the number of 9,06 tracks like before !!
I wanted to switch back to old firmware but it's not possible.
I spent hours of hours because the new firmware in combination with Mediasource 5 works slowly like a dying snail (on a new laptop!). So even if I would accept a track limit of 9,000 it would be no fun. The more because since installing MediaSource 5 the RedChair's Notmad Explorer doesn't work any more.
The only chance is a change to IPOD. already more than 60hours of trying are not worth that thing.

Help!?My Zen Xtra 40 GB freezed when I was deleting a track with the player and I have to unplug the power supply. Then this player stucks in startup screen which displays EAX afterwards. I tried to enter rescure mode followed the instruction, i.e., power off, hold play/pause, press reset with paper clip, but nothing happened. • Zen Xtra - Totally Dead After Firmware Upd

Following a failed attempt to upgrade the firmware on my Zen Xtra 60gb, I have now spent many happy hours this weekend reading about the problems we are all having with this issue.
What happened to me was that I tried to upgrade under Vista but ended up with only the recovery mode. I tried to recover the firmware using a clean XP build and Media Player 0. During this update all went well until the final reboot, where the machine stopped and the update crashed.
The machine has not booted since this.
I have no recovery mode, reset doesn't work (with or without the battery), the PC doesn't detect the Zen Xtra and if you try to charge it there is no 'charging' indicator.
    It is totally dead.
Has anyone recover their machine from this state?
I emailed the help desk who responded with -
"However, my sincere apologies as the warranty for your unit appears to
be over by now and there would not be any out of warranty
    repair/replacements available for your unit.
May I suggest that you purchase a new unit, instead of having your unit
replaced/repaired at a cost (if available), as this would be a more
    economical option"
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

and btw... is there coming a new firmware soon?

A new firmware was released recently.
EAX is dependent on what you chose. I've never used it on the players that had it.

  • Latest Zen Xtra Firmware Makes MP3s Without Full Tags Worthless

I recently loaded my Zen Xtra with the latest firmware and after two days of troubleshooting found that it now refuses to play MP3s with less than full tags using the "Play Any Track" mode which since I have over 000 songs is the only way to go... All my MP3s are tagged simply with Artist - Song and I never put any of the extra junk like Genre or Album names in. I had to add dummy info just to get the Xtra to recognize these MP3s... I'm using WMP since?the NOMAD Explorer no longer works.Message Edited by stevcoll on 2-2-200609:27 AM

You won't believe but I had the same problem just couple of days ago with the same player (but 40 gigs). I was confused just like you, so I tried to format the disk again (while connected to PC) and reloaded the OS. Then a message appeared like 'Now you can update your firmware' or something like that, so I ran the firmware from PC, and no message about a battery level appeared, and the firmware was updated correctly. Try it, and let me know if it's OK! Good luck!

  • Zen Xtra won't connect for Firmware Install. WMP Rolled back to v

My Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra would not load firmware from it's hard dri've. It only entered into a cycle of displaying the 'Creative' then 'EAX' screens. I Downloaded the latest version of firmware 'ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03' and installed it following the instructions on the Creative website.
The install started initially but then failed because either the software installing the firmware, or the zen xtra, locked up. I left it for nearly an hour and had no choice but to cancel and try again.
Since this time I have been unable to load any version of firmware to the zen xtra. The installer says that the zen is not connected even though it is. When I do connect it, the 'autoplay' dialog appear asking me what to do. So, the computer recognises the device as 'NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra' but the firmware installer will not recognise it at all.
I have carried out a 'Reload OS' in preparation for new firmware. I have also carried out a 'Format All' and 'Clean Up' from the Recovery Menu that the zen xtra is now stuck in. All appears to be fine with the Zen's hard dri've as, on completion of the format, the hard dri'ves shows 'Freespace 3833.7MB'.
I have looked on this discussion forum and FAQ and this appears to be a common problem but have found no solutions. I have tried uninstalling Windows Mediaplayer and rolled back to v0 and reinstalling drivers and MediaSource software but problem persists. Please help.

    OK. Sorted it! Try this!
    http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9829
Turns out you have to uninstall Windows Media Player Runtime v as well as WMP itself.
Also, if you have the problem with reduced HDD space because of installing PlayForSure firmware, you could install a bigger hard dri've. They are the generic 2.5 inch hard dri'ves fitted in Laptop Computers! My 40Gb Zex Xtra now has the 80Gb HDD I removed from my VAIO! And it was easier to do on the Zen than it was on the VAIO!

  • Nomad Zen Xtra - 60G - Major Issues

I bought the Zen Xtra for my husband for his b-day last April (2004). Over the summer the Zen Xtra worked well and transfer of 307 tracks of songs was successful. Then, in the fall we decided to try setting up playlists through the Creative MediaSource software. Since then we have had numerous problems with the machine. First of all, when trying to create a playlist, the Xtra froze. We've since gone through the motions of (a) upgrading all the software/firmware we could and (b) rebooted and done a disk cleanup.
Unfortunately this has NOT solved our problem. Yes - we are now able to use the Zen Xtra for listening to the tracks we already have on the machine, but everytime we connect it to the computer and try to either add new tracks, (We aren't even able to do an AudioSync! The error we get is :"Unable to read file. File may be in use, missing or corrupted". Of course this is not the case because we are able to listen to the song from the Zen Xtra.) listen to a track (through the xtra on the computer), (the error we get here is : "Unable to playback current track. The audo device may not be available or the file may be missing or corruped.") or try to create a playlist (The error here is: The operation failed. Ensure player is properly connected before trying again.")
In each of these cases, the Zen Xtra freezes up and we have to go through the whole process again just to get the stupid thing to play songs so we can listen to them. We are very disappointed that we are not able to use the Zen Xtra to its full capablities. What are we missing? How can we get it to work as it's is supposed to through the software on the computer?

Thanks Cat for the info. I've managed to get all my files from the Xtra over to my PC.
I am still experiencing the following by the Zen Xtra:
    A) if the machine is shut off for longer than a day, it takes from 25-30mins to turn on. It gets "stuck" at the EAX screen
    B) I am still unable to create a playlist on through the Media Centre. Everytime I try, it says that the Zen Xtra is not connected and then my Zen gets "stuck" forcing me to do a manual reboot of it.
I believe this to be a software problem, but that's not to say that I'm not totally disappointed that I'm unable to use my Zen to its full potential. (And manually rebooting and/or waiting for 25-30min to listen to my Zen isn't fun either.) Does this SOUND like a simple software issue or is it more? (Remember my warranty will run out soon)
If it IS a software issue is there any OTHER software out there that I would be able to use to appreciate my Zen to its fullest?
    Thanks again.J

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra stops working with XP following Windows Media Player 11 Beta Installat

Yesterday I was very pleased to find that my Creative Zen Xtra (model DAP-HD00) portable media player is a PlaysForSure capable device. Creative Labs, on November 9, 2005, released the Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware v2.0.03. I installed this firmware (I had to install the Creative ZenJukebox Driver v.30.03 first to get Windows to recognize the device). Once the firmware was upgraded, Windows began recognizing the Zen Xtra as a MTP device and life was good. I was able to synchronize it with both Napster To Go and Windows Media Player 0.
After this, I went ahead and installed Windows Media Player Beta, which I just downloaded yesterday as well.
From a functional standpoint, WMP seems to run just fine. However, when I connected the Creative Zen Xtra (with its PlaysForSure firmware), Windows redetected the hardware. It first showed "Creative Jukebox Zen Xtra" in the tooltip, followed by "MTP Device" in the new hardware tooltip. Finally, Windows announced that there was a problem installing my new hardware and that it may not work properly.
Sure enough, when I went into Device Manager, my Zen Xtra was showing as an MTP Device with an exclamation point on it. More specifically, it specified the status of, "This device cannot start (Code 0)."
Prior to the installation of Windows Media Player, the Creative Zen Xtra showed in device manager with the following characteristics under the heading "Windows Portable Devices":
Name: NOMAD Jukebox Zen XtraDriver Version: 5.2.0.0 dated 8/30/2004Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
    Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.3802.3802 built by dnsrv(bld4act)
Windows Media Player changed this to the following (the device now shows up under "Portable Devices"):
Name: MTP DeviceDriver Version: 5.2.5326.4762 dated 2/22/2006Digitally Signed by Microsoft Windows Component Publisher
    Driver File Details:C:\Windows\system32\wpdusb.sys - v5.2.5358.4827 (WMP_.060509-2009)C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\wudfrd.sys - v6.0.5348.0(winmain(wmbla).0604-339)
The file wudfrd.sys is NOT digitally signed in this case.
As of now, my Zen Xtra is completely unusable on this system, and I need to sync it with my laptop for the time being, which still has WMP 0 installed on it.
Is this a bug with WMP beta? Is it a problem with my firmware? Since this is PlaysForSure compliant firmware, and it worked flawlessly with Napster and WMP 0 (before the MTP driver was updated), it would seem to be a WMP beta issue. I'd like to hear more official confirmation on the subject, however.
Some general details about my system are:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2Verified GENUINE Microsoft operating system using Genuine Advantage ValidationIntel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2 GHz, Hyper-Threaded processor2.00 GB RAM
Windows Media Player Version: .0.5358.4827Napster Version: 3.6.0.7 (US)
Any recommendations? Fixes? Some have suggested rolling back the WMP installation, but I would like to consider this option only as an absolute last resort.
    Best regards,Matt

Ok, this worked out accidentally - but happily
I first installed the driver - not the media source - but the driver for the device.
After that the windows device manager yellow sign disappeared - apparently the device driver was registered by windows.
Then I Installed Mediasource 5 - the installation went thru fine.
Does anyone have any recommended updates to install, please also advise what benefits.
    Thanks.

PS. I plugged in more than computer and its the samething
I don't have a specific answer for you ... but a question instead: When you say you plugged it into more than computer, did you use the same USB cable each time? The reason I ask is because of what I experienced just the other day (that really confused me after I thought I had figured out some of this stuff).
I have been successfully plugging my Zen V Plus 2GB (like yours) into the USB port on the front of my PC (some people have to plug it into a back port) and it charges very well. But I wanted it to charge a bit faster, so I bought a Belkin charger from Wal-Mart (it comes with a charger for a wall outlet, a car charger, and a short USB cable that plugs into the back of either charger). Well, I left the Belkin USB cable in my car's glovebox so I could charge it in the car when I'm driving. And thinking that I could plug the same USB cable that I've been successfully using on my PC into the wall outlet charger, I discovered something baffling.
Belkin's chargers (car and home) only seem to work with the USB cable they supplied (don't know why they only supply one cable and two places to plug it, though). Not being an electrical engineer, I can only guess that not all USB cables are created equal. And perhaps this is part of the problem people like you are having getting their players to charge sufficiently to display the screen.
I hope that someone more qualified (that is, more knowledgeable) can shed some light on this subject. What combination of USB port and cable is required to work with Creative players? Are different cables wired differently (like some cat-5 or modem cables are "crossover" and some aren't)?

  • Zen Xtra won't turn

    Right.
I was upgrading to the new firmware released 2 days ago. I had my Zen Xtra plugged into my PC and into a wall socket to prevent a sudden battery loss. The status meter goes through its thing, installing the new firmware. It then says "restarting player" like it should.
And it never turned back on.
I left it there for about an hour before I tried to turn it back on manually. Then I tried disconnecting/reconnecting the power cable. Then the battery. The reset hole doesn't work, nor does turning it on while holding play. It just sits there as if there was no battery and power plugged into it.
I've already sent an email to customer service, but I bet this forum can be faster.
    Thanks in advance.

    Dear all,
I decided to upgrade my Creative Zen Xtra to the new firmware a few days ago... what a bad decision that was!
I did everything the instructions said, plugged the player in ran the software and all was good until the software froze and the player switched off. I left t for a while and then got worried. I tried to switch the player on and low and behold, it wouldn't!
I've tried the recovery mode (reset button with the play button held down) but nothing appears. No icon when the power cable is plugged in and no luck when tried with a full battery from a working player (my girlfriend has the same one).
Very frustrated by this, I decided to e-mail Creative and explain the situation. They sent an email back which was quite typical of a helpdesk, stating standard "have you tried this?" and "have you tried that?" type of questions. Obviously I tried these but since I had already tried a few methods of reviving the player I had little faith... and none of them worked.
Another email to Creative providing the information they asked for (serial number, date of purchase, responses when certain actions are taken). They emailed back informing me that my player is now out of warrenty - I have had it for year and 3 months. I've have included the latest email response below:

When I received this email I was intrigued to see the comment regarding "certain charges" and that no exact figure is provided. I have now emailed them saying that I would like the player fixed but I would also like to know the "certain charges" before I commit to anything! I'm finding it annoying that rather than the issue being pin pointed originally, I have now sent 3 emails and still no further to resolving the problem.
I personally am frustrated and disgusted that I am now left with a very expensi've paper weight due to a poor firmware release by Creative themselves which they now expect me to pay for because of their poor programming abilities. I have read other comments of people who have experienced the same situation and so I would like to make these large numbers known to Creative. If anyone has experienced this same problem please make the community aware by posting on this message. I would sincerely advise others not to upgrade until Creative have addressed this issue completely as I do not want others to have the experiences I am having now.
    Thank you for reading this,

  • Is there a way to format a Jukebox Zen Xtra from the device itself?

Forgot to subscribe to the post

It's been a while since I used my Xtra but I seem to recall there's an option to format the player from the rescue screen - hold down the play button and press the reset button in with a paperclip and you should see a screen with an option to completely format the player. I may be dreaming it, but it's worth a try!
That said, if you can find someone with a PC running Windows XP and Windows Media Player 10 (alternatively, install Windows XP in VirtualBox and upgrade to Windows Media Player 10) you can install the latest "PlaysForSure" Xtra firmware from the download page. Once installed this turns the Xtra into a standard MTP device, allowing you to use it on any machine that supports MTP without having to install any drivers (this includes Windows with Media Player 10 or later installed, so Vista and later are automatically supported). However, you can only install the firmware from a machine running Windows Media Player 10 - if you try with Windows Media Player 11 or later installed the firmware updater will fail to detect the player.
I updated my Zen Xtra to the PlaysForSure firmware when it was first released and never had any issues with my player after that, in XP, Vista or 7 (and it made life much easier as I no longer had to rely on Creative's drivers, which were a little problematic).

  • Safest way to update the Zen Xtra's firmwa

I am running a Creative NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra (earlier, non-PFS firmware) on an XP machine with Windows Media Player .
What is the safest way to update my player's firmware so that I can use PFS?

uynless you realy realy want the palys for sure firmware, or you need ti to work with vista you would be better off leaving it as it is.
if you must update the firmware do this:
back up everything on your player ( you should have a back up anyway ) going to the PFS 2.x.x firmware will completly wipe ( format) the hard disk.
go to control panel, then add/remove programmes, remove windows media player and windows media player runtime, it will 'rollback' to windows media player 0, re-boot your p.c.
check the add/remove porgammes again just to be sure that WMP and WMP runtime are not lurking..
Charge your Zen xtra, and leave it conected to the charger.
Download the firmware, and follow the on screen prompts, cross your fingers and hope for the best.
