Zen xtra 30gig, dead batte

i have only had my jukebox zen xtra (30 gig) mp3 player for about 5 months now, and all of a sudden its like my battery (3.6v lithium ion) is completed gone. i have tried resetting it numerous times & ways, and to no luck it seems my mp3 player never recognizes the battery is actually in the player itself. i can only power up the player when its connect to the ac power cord, i tried charging it for over 24 hours, nothing changed. i also tried the latest firmwire, and i get the error "please ensure that your batteries are inserted before you proceed. restart the program when you are ready". has anyone else had any similar problems & fixes with this type of situation? i just hate to think my answer is going to be to get an ipod. thanks for any help.

Have you tried a disk cleanup? To run a Disk Cleanup you need to access the Rescue Mode. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
Did you leave the player with a flat battery for several weeks or more? (Seems unlikely as the player is only 5 months old, but just to check)
You can try connecting the player to the mains adapter, then turn the wall switch on and off a few times to see if this "kick starts" the battery into life.
Failing this, are you under warranty?

• Zen Xtra - Totally Dead After Firmware Upd

Following a failed attempt to upgrade the firmware on my Zen Xtra 60gb, I have now spent many happy hours this weekend reading about the problems we are all having with this issue.
What happened to me was that I tried to upgrade under Vista but ended up with only the recovery mode. I tried to recover the firmware using a clean XP build and Media Player 0. During this update all went well until the final reboot, where the machine stopped and the update crashed.
The machine has not booted since this.
I have no recovery mode, reset doesn't work (with or without the battery), the PC doesn't detect the Zen Xtra and if you try to charge it there is no 'charging' indicator.
It is totally dead.
Has anyone recover their machine from this state?
I emailed the help desk who responded with -
"However, my sincere apologies as the warranty for your unit appears to
be over by now and there would not be any out of warranty
repair/replacements available for your unit.
May I suggest that you purchase a new unit, instead of having your unit
replaced/repaired at a cost (if available), as this would be a more
economical option"
Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

• No power after firmware upgrade on nomad jukebox zen xtra

I have the nomad jukebox zen xtra 30gig that froze up over a year ago after i tried to install the firmware upgrade. After the unsuccessful attempt, the mp3 player stopped working.... I mean no power at all. I've changed the battery and recharged the battery from an outside source...still no luck. I can't even try any of the suggestions anyone gives on this site because I have no power.Does anyone have this problem? More important, does anyone have this problem and know of a solution?I've already set my pc back to wmp 0, I have the firmware on the desktop waiting. Now all I need is some power on this unit so that i can try some of the suggestions that seems to be working for people. Thank you

I have the same problem too, but my unit is a?Creative Normad Junebox Zen Xtra 40GB. I was trying to find a solution to my problem when I read about your problem. I have pressed the reset button, on / off switch, removed the battery, reinstalled the battery, and nothing seems to work. I was hoping you?might get a solution to this problem, so that I might be able to fix my MP3 player. If I hear of a solution, I will let you know, thanks for sharing. Issue:? While updating the firmware to the Zen Xtra 40 GB, the unit powered down and?has never came on again. There seems to be no real reason why the unit should not power up. The battery and the AC adapter are working correctly. I am very disappointed in Creative...

• Zen Xtra - please help

I?have a Zen Xtra 30Gig and?I changed my hard disk, because it was broken. Then the zen Xtra wrote, that I have to update my firmware. So I tryed to update the firmware of my player (FW 2.0.03) and after two or three times rebooting the firmware update program stopped, but it didn't show anything, that the update was successfull finished. So I was waiting for 0 min. but nothing happend. After that, there where no firmware on the player and the computer (Win XP)?is detecting the player only in Device Manager but not in any programs like Media Player or Media Source?or in Firmware-update-program. I tryed everything, that is written in the "Playsforsure player connections part" - including USB registry entry, newest drivers and application, ... I tryed it on my second computer too. But it is the same, no program find the player!!Has anyone ideas to solve this problem? Please help me - thank you very much in advance!?

I'm having similar problems. I have upgraded my pc from windows 2000 to windows xp media center, and I tried to upgrade the firmware on my 30gb creative zen xtra. It hasn't worked and I'm now left with the player only entering rescue mode, as there is apparently no driver installed. I can't install the drivers because the computer cannot recognize it, presumably because it doesnt have any drivers. I can see the device in nomad explorer but it is only listed as having 20mb of space, with nothing on it. It also wont allow any files to be copied onto it, saying that the player cannot support that type of file. Maybe if there were drivers I could paste onto the device without having to install them it might work, but I dont know where i would find such files. Please help! if anyone knows anything i could try or has driver files i could drag and drop onto the player please send a link.

• Zen Xtra playback or

I recently downloaded and updated the firmware to my Zen Xtra 30gig to 2.0.03 and the driver to .30.03 and now my music only plays back in alphabetical order instead of track order. I don't get it.
Before I updated the player, my albums would play back in their correct track order and now they want to playback in alphabetical order and I can't seem to stop it. I know that the installation of the new firmware wiped the player clean and according to the details of the new firmware I can "Use the drag-and-drop method to transfer songs or files to your player through Windows Explorer" so that's what I did. I also sync'd music with Windows Media Player, double checked all my ID3 information and it all shows the songs listed correctly. When I play the music in WM 0, they play in the correct order and they used to under the old firmware. I contacted support but they were no help and I've searched the forums here and can't find a solution.
I really don't want to hear that because I updated the firmware NOW I have to use a certain software to copy music to the player. The firmware details also stated "Enjoy seamless support with any computer running Microsoft? Windows Media? Player 0 and Windows? XP - no drivers or software needed" so I will be greatly upset if I have to use something like MediaSource.
Thanks for any help!

I've tried it with and without the main charger. When i leave it on the rebuilding screen it will stay paused for about an hour and then a screen pops up saying Firmware Problem, and it just stays on that screen.

• My Zen Xtra 40GB mp3 player was dead with no reason

I bought this mp3 player(Zen Xtra 40GB?last year, it worked brilliant for 3 months, after that, I went back to my country for 3 months, when I came back in Oct, I could only switch it on, and after welcome screen, it pop up an reset back stage list for just half sec, then turn to welcome screen again... I took it inside my house(I was using it as my in-car media center) decide to check it out. after few days, it just went dead. no matter press any bottom, or even charging, there is no signs at all... is there any of you have the same problem before? is there any solutions that I could self-repair it's?I am afraid it has ran out its warranty. Are there any third party resellers that are able?to repair it's or it has to be return to Creative support/repairing depot?also how much is it'sgonna charge me for repairing by Creative??Please help me... I love this Creative mp3 player, don't want it just dead like this!!

I dont know maybe your hard dri've died, Try if its possible to update the firmware or reformating to see if it fixes. If anything call Creative if you really like your player you can buy another one or get it fized. Sorry sucks to lose a good MP3 player. I also heard that you should have your device on HOLD to prevent damage I really dont understand why but maybe it will halpe you in the future

• Dead drive in a Zen Xtra, need help w/ replacem

The dead dri've in my 40Gb Zen Xtra has been removed from the player and its been sitting in pieces for the past week or so. I would like to know what I would need to do to a replacement dri've (have a 40Gb notebook dri've ready to go) in order for the player to A. recognize it and B. be able to put songs on it. Do I have to format it in a certain way before hand or will the firmware update be able to do that? Help is much appreciated.
-Mobious-

I was having similar troubles trying to get a big Maxtor operational. I had to set a jumper on the back of the drive ... then was able to follow the advice given below. (Please see complete text of other item).
I've been successful using Maxtor 60GB IDE drives on Solaris 8 on Sparc by doing the following:
1. Boot the system off System Software 1 of 2 CD, and follow the instructions until you can open a command window.
2. Once in the command window you need to type "format". Choose the hard drive (disk), but then you need to create a new "type" that is compatible with the solaris driver software and uses most of the disk. For large IDE drives, the only thing that matters is the actual number of usable sectors (which are 512 bytes each). You can go to the Maxtor website to get the real number of sectors for your drive. Then you need to make up a set of cyl, head, sectors numbers to enter into the "type". The limits on the Solaris driver (found by hitting enter at the prompts) are: max Cyl: 32767, max heads: 64, max sectors: 256. These are different than the limits for Windows. ATA limits max heads to 16, so I use that to be safe. Therefore I choose to use 256 sectors, 16 heads, and then choose a number of cylinders that will yield a number equal or less than the total number of sectors allowed on the drive (ie: total sectors = cyl*heads*sectors). Then subtract 2 from the cylinders when entering the number of cyl at the prompt, as you'll need them for the following steps where it wants to reserve two cylinders. When you get to the name of the drive, I choose to type the name of the drive with an * appended to the end to signify a difference. Once done defining the "type", write the label.
3. Proceed with installation.
(Again, please see other item in forum (something about installing a bix maxtor).
You can email me at [email protected] if you want more specific advice.
Cheers, John

• Zen XTRA is completely dead after installing the latest firmware 2.10

Hello,?I have tried to install the latest firmware 2.0.03 to my Zen Xtra 60GB mp3 player. The installation process completed about 70%. As I understand, at that point the?new firmware was finally uploaded after a couple of player reboots. The?firmware installer was waiting with a message "Waiting for the player to reboot", and the player rebooted. But the firmware installer was waiting, and waiting... and after an hour I looked at the player and saw that it was not starting up at all. I removed the USB cable, stopped the firmware upgrade process and tried to reboot the player with reset; then I tried to access the recovery menu as described in the FAQ?- but no success. The player shows completely no response to any button presses, the LCD does not even flicker, the hard dri've does not power up - I don't hear it. Nothing happens, even if pressing the play/reset switch for fi've minutes. What's could be the matter? And more importantly, how can I get it working back again? I fear that the warranty has expired by now. Can anyone suggest what to do?I would be grateful for any ideas.

It is puzzling how some people including myself can upgrade thier firmware on thier devices and experience no problems at all during the procedure. Then theres others like yourself who would experience catastrophic events.
Since we all downloaded the firmware from the same place, and?alot of us didn't have any problems, it is?at least safe to say that there isn't anything?wrong?with the new firmware. Or else we'd all problems.
So for these devices that are failing, there must have been already a serious problem with them before the upgrade even started. The symptons just went unnoticed through every day normal use. And are only manifested through a reload/upgrade of firmware. Or something happened on the computer itself, during the transfer of data; auto file scanning virus protection comes to mind, or other programs or services running in the background that were taking up resources needed to make the upgrade go smoothly,?a USB cable with a short in it or a bad USB port. Who knows?!
If the player doesn't even start?up in?rescue mode then theres really nothing as a consumer you can do to fix it. You'd have to just see about getting it repaired, or replace it. I know yours is a 60GB, but?I gotta tell you the new 30GB Zen Vision M is a sweet deal!

• Zen XTRA dead or not? Zombie state or gone forev

I bought thru e*ay a fairly new Zen Xtra. The charger works, the battery is fine. But the turn-on switch produces no display at all. I hear nothing... I can't tell what's wrong, whether it's the hard dri've, the switch, or what...
Any ideas? And has anyone done the hdd switch and gotten this solved? My fear is that with no display, it may be something way more fundamental...

Doesn't sound good... try connecting the player to the mains adapter, then press the tiny reset switch on the side with a bent paper clip (don't use anything sharp).
Should have mentioned in my orig. post the obvious: I don't know if it's under warranty and I bought the Xtra "as-is."
If a reset with power connected does nothing, then what? Gi've it up for lost?

• Zen Xtra batt

I have had my Zen Xtra for about 0 months now. It was working fine just last night, but now today it doesn't even turn on. Is the battery dead because i always have it recharging? I don't know what to do, i don't want to lose all of my music.Message Edited by apexi303 on 0-3-2005 09:22 PM

Just to answer that specific question, it's not bad for the player and shouldn't cause any problem.

• Nomad Zen Xtra does not power

I have just recieved my Zen Xtra today. But when I power it on, per the manuals proper instruction, it does not power on. I have also tried to charge the battery with the mp3 player both on & off. When I had it on the "using AC outlet" icon would show. It does seem I need a new battery. But I fear something else, could the charging mechanism be dead? This player is a refurbished product by the way. It works on the AC outlet, I can transfer files to it, and I can successfully connect it to the USB port. the hard dri've sounds fine. It seems I need to buy a new battery right? Where else besides Creative.com can I buy one? Thanks.

First, read/try the advice here
Failing that, I would suggest buying a replacement battery. Check froogle.com (that link is set to the best deals) for a good price.

• Zen Xtra Battery Problem - won't recha

Although I'm pretty sure I need a new battery, and that I have myself to blame, I just wanted to see if there was anything else I could do before spending $50 to buy a new battery. I am unable to turn on my Zen Xtra, unless I have it plugged into the power adaptor. When it is plugged in, it turns on, but the battery charging indicator at the bottom left does not appear; instead, a symbol of a power cord shows up. I take this to mean that the battery is broken and is incapable of being recharged, probably a result of not using the player for about a month and having the battery completely uncharged during this time. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem, or do I just have to bite the bullet and buy a new battery?

I had the same problem. Bought the Zen to deploy to Afghanistan, came home and couldn't find the charger, so like a dummy I listened to it until it ran out. Then I found the charger and all I could see was the power cord symbol - not the charging lightning bolt. I left it plugged in all night and it still shut right off when I unplugged it. I tried unplugging it and replugging it to "jumpstart' the battery but no luck. I tried to update the firmware but it wouldn't let me - said I needed to have a battery in. So I went to Batteries Plus and got a Nuon replacement for $30, put it in and saw the same power cord symbol and same shut down after I unplugged it. That's when I found this forum and was getting ready to try the "reformat" method posted above. I figured why not try it with my original battery so I put that one back in while the machine was plugged in and voila, I got the charging symbol!
So I guess the Zen needed to "get back in the charging mode" with a 'not-completely-dead' battery for it to wake up its original battery. Now I am going to return my replacement battery.
I just checked it by unplugging it while it is charging and it holds a charge (it had one bar after 5 mins of charging).
By the way, you can get to the Recovery Menu by just holding play when you turn it on (no need to press the reset button).

• Zen xtra is detected, but doesnt appear in my computer!

Hi guys! I havent used my zen xtra in a while. I d/led and installed the latest drivers today, as I wanted to back up my music. I followed the instructions for installing the drivers, and everything went fine. I connected the device, and it said blah blah...new device detected, detected zen xtra etc....yor device is now ready to use...
fine....but it just doesnt appear as a mass storage device in my computer!! Neither is it detected by their creative media source.
The device appaers as a zen xtra in device manager, under usb devices, and says it is working fine!
I dont get it's!
....uninstalled, re-installed, removed from device manager, got all my latest updates etc...
The only thing of note is that the battery is totally dead, and im powering it off the mains. Havent installed the latest firmware, but that shouldnt matter, right?!
Any suggestions?
cheerz,

hey mate!
Thanx for that! It personally would make sense for me for creative to include that extra program within the drivers!! ... I just thought it was an optional extra!!
Having said that, Im still pretty sure that my zen used to appear in my computer!! As I used to be able to drag standard files into it!...maybe I need to d/l another program for that!!
Thax loads anywayz,
