Zen Xtra 40 GB Scroll Wheel Prob

Hi! My Zen Extra 40 GB, which my husband purchased on December 9, 2004 (warranty is almost up), has a problem with the scroll wheel. Sometimes it will pause the song that is playing when I try to select other music. Has anyone else had this problem, and does it warrant sending it to be serviced? I can't find the original receipt, but I did print out a copy of the transaction off of WalMart's website. If it's going to cost a fortune to fix, I guess I could li've with it. I just noticed this problem this morning, and it doesn't always pause the song, but I don't know if it could get worse over time. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I had this exact same problem with the scroll wheel recently. Luckily I have solved the problem thanks to users here and on Nomadness.net. In fact my only posts on this board are because of this annoyance.
I was also having the scroll wheel pausing tracks and playing tracks when it shouldn't have been doing that.
For me it came down to hardware. I actually got my Xtra aroudn the same time you did and only a few weeks ago did I finally fix it. It was going on for about 2 months, and it just got to the point where I didnt want to use the player because it became such a hassle.
What I did was go to Radio Shack and get a can of Switch Electronics Cleaner. It was like 0 bucks or so. I also got a pack of .4mm phillips head screwdrivers as I was going to open the unit and fix it that way but to my dismay and maybe for the better the screws wouldnt budge on the unit. I then took the little straw thing that can attach onto the end of the spray nozzle and sprayed a small amount (one split second spray) right onto the side of the unit by the scroll wheel. The cleaner is safe on the plastic. I then worked the scroll wheel back and forth so the stuff would get into it and lube it nicely.
I fired up my player and at first it still had the problem, but literally after about a minute the problem was gone. I use my player all the time and since doing this not once have I had the scroll wheel acting as the play/pause button. Its back to what it was like when I first bought it.

  • Nomad Jukebox 3 scroll wheel prob

The scroll wheel on my Jukebox is buggered up. I put some lubricant on it from the outside (did not try and pry the machine open) and that worked for a little while. Tried the same thing again - no luck. Any instructions and/or suggestions to remedy this?

I've owned 3 nomad jukebox 3s over the past 4 years and of those three, two of them have developed the problem of having an erratic scroll wheel. Today I used radio shack switch cleaner/lubricant and it cleared up the problem with out a trace of skipping up or down. I couldn't be happier.
I did however have to open up the jukebox. there are four screws under the rubber feet and one more screw between the two battery slots. the face comes off rather easely. the lube that i bought came with a straw atachment which i recomend for controling the placment of the fluid. I sprayed a very concervati've amound of lube into the small vally that surrounds the inside of the wheel. i would turn it about /3 of a full rotation and spray a little more and then repeat. Then I rapidly turned the scroll wheel over and over till till you couldn't see much of the lube in the vally. After putting the jukebox back together and booting it up the problem seems to be compleatly fixed! Thank god, it is my favorite MP3 player and is no longer available at anywhere brand new. I hope this little mini-faq helps anyone with this problem, Aaron.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra 40 GB USB prob

I've had my player since Christmas and until a couple of weeks ago it's worked fine. Now when I connect my player to my computer with the usb it says "Your USB has malfunctioned, replace it" so i did and it still didn't work than a couple of days ago it worked, i thought it would keep working. The next day it stopped working and said the same thing. How can I fix this problem, please somebody help me.

What I meant was, don't use a USB hub. Just plug the cable directly from the player into a free USB port on your PC.
You can also ask a friend if you can install the creative SW on his machine and try to see if the player is recognized and works. That at least will isolate the problem to the PC or to the player.
If the player works on your buddies PC, you should try to uninstall the SW and drivers and then reinstall. It is advisable to install the sw to a different directory than you used the first time (i.e. don't use the default directory).
If the player does not work on your buddies PC you should call creative's tech support.
    Good Luck!

  • Zen xtra- problems with the wh

I have a 40gb zen xtra. The wheel has always given me a bit of a problem but moreso recently. Often when I click it to select an artist (or anything, it happens randomly, but frequently) it doesnt perform that function but instead pauses the song thats currently playing. If I press it enough times, eventually it will work, sometimes it changes the song if i press it too many times. This has happened for a long time but now is happening more frequently.
Also, and this just started happening, never has before, when i try to scroll up or down by holding it, it will stop and I'll have to release it and push it back up or down in order to continue.
Anyone else have these problems and is there a solution?Message Edited by Wolfe on 02-07-200706:2 PM

  • Zen Xtra Scrolling prob

My 60G Zen Extra just started scrolling problems. Once it is turned on the second you touch the scroll bar it starts a fast scroll of the menu. Nothing else works. You cannot pause, shut the unit down or anything. The only way to stop it is to remove the battery. When you put the battery back in it does the same thing.
I have multiple batteries and it does it on all of them. It also does it when the charger is plugged in.
Does anyone have a fix for this?

ld be dirt under the scroll wheel button thing, i had a problem with my Zen xtra scroll button 'sticking' and i fixed it by completly stripping dowen my zen xtra, and cleaning the switch with some compressed air ( from an aerosol air duster can)

  • Scrolling problem Zen Xtra...is it magnetiz

I went on vacation last week and put my Zen Xtra in our little hotel safe (which turned out to be an electronic safe). Let me start by saying that it has worked great for the past 8 months since I got it. We went away for the afternoon, and when I came back my player turned on fine, but when I scrolled down on my black scroller, it scrolled continuously. And one week later it still does that. Has anyone had this problem? Do you think it's been "magnetized" by the electronic safe it was in? I had one in an electronic safe on a different trip -year previously and there wasn't any problem.
The thing is that all the buttons work fine...i can press "play" and it'll play the 40-song mix I had on there last, the "volume", "track", "back" and "power" buttons work fine, AND I can press the black scroller "in" without problem, it's just when I move the scroller down or up that it scrolls continuously and can only be stopped by either taking out the battery, or pressing-in the "reset" hole.
I decided to try and just erase the whole thing because I thought I might be able to solve it by re-installing the firmware, but when I open it in safety mode, I have to scroll down to "re-load" and as soon as I scroll down, it again scrolls continuously to a point where I can't do anything else.
If anyone has had this problem and fixed it, i'd love to hear about how. Or if anyone knows someplace I can go to get it fixed, i'd definitely do that. Help!

I'm thinking that it has nothing to do with putting it in the safe. I think it might just be a coincidence and it just happened to go bad just then. I'd be more concerned about magnets near a hard dri've. As those two things don't mix very well. I think you might be able to get it fixed through Creative, but you'll probably have to pay for it since it'll be out of warranty.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra connection prob

I already tried searcing the forums, And I didn't come across anything like this, And anything I came across that was similar I did as was suggested and it didn't help. anyways, onto the problem...:
I'm using Windows XP by the way.
I just got a new Zen Xtra a few days ago because I had to return my first one because the harddri've crashed, so I took this one home, loaded my music onto it and it was fine. Today I went to load more music onto it and my computer started lagging really badly, I use Realplayer to put my music onto the player and when I clicked into it, It would freeze as it was starting and I'd have to kill the program.
Then I tried going into My Computer to go into the Nomad explorer, Except my computer took about 5 minutes to find itself, And then it only found 'Desktop' and 'My Computer' which, 'My Computer' had nothing in it. So I went into desktop and that fixed the problem with the harddri'ves showing up, Except once I get into Nomad Explorer it says my player isn't connected.
I (physically) disconnected and reconnected my player while in Nomad Exploer but it's still a no-go.
I cleaned up the disk on my player and rebooted it, I used a different cable and tried all my USB ports. What do you suggest I do?
I really need some help and if it doesn't get fixed I'm not getting another replacement, I'll have to get a different brand.Message Edited by spring90 on 08-07-2006 04:43 PM

Ok... I think I figured it out. I finally got into the recovery mode. I let the battery sit out of the mp3 player for a while, hoping that there is a capacitor that would run out of power. I put the battery back in and got into recovery mode. I ran disk clean up. Nothing changed. I had the same problem I first started off with. So I took the battery out again for an hour. Came back, and got back into recovery mode. I reinstalled the OS. Everything seems to be working fine.
I hope that anyone having a similar problem with this mp3 player can keep this in the back of their mind if they cannot get into recovery mode due to a boot up and shut down problem.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gp prob

Well, to start off with, I loved my mp3 player. So far, I ran into problems that I could not fix. I downloaded all of the updates that were needed. My mp3 player, a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 60gb, suddenly would not work the same way. When the power adapter of battery are inserted, the player starts up. When they are pulled the player shuts down. One of the problems is when the player is on, it doesn't want to leave the main screen that says, "EAX". The hard dri've is not spinning, and no data is being accessed. I found on this website a page that tells users how to reset their mp3 player. For my mp3 player, it must be turned off for me to do a hard disk check, re-installation of operating system, or a format of the hard dri've...which is another problem, because I cannot turn it off. As I stated previously, the player is either on or off depending on if the battery is in or not. I am totally puzzeled. I cannot connect the player to the computer because of this problem. So either I have a new 60gb laptop hard dri've, or I figure out a way to get this to work. I haven't been able to find any threads like this or any users experiencing these problems.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Zen Xtra Prob

I'm having a problem with my 30GB Nomad Zen Xtra. When I start it up, it goes in to Rescue Mode v.3 - Boot v.2, HW v0.0.
I tried 'Clean Up' and nothing happened. I tried Reload OS and it says 'Harddisk Problem'. Is there any way to fix this problem without reformatting? I have stuff that I don't want to lose.

A slight rattle, and feeling something is loose, is normal with a hard disk.
You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net at your OWN RISK. If you don't want to try this or are under warranty then contact Creative Support.
If you aren't under warranty you can contact Creative Support to see if they will repair it. If you want to try repairing it yourself, taking the risk the hard disk is at fault, then you can follow Rudi Cheow's excellent guide. There's also a thread here at the Zen Nomadness.net forum on compatible dri'ves, and the last page of Rudi's guide also has information on this.

  • Major zen xtra prob

I just installed the newest firmware upgrade on my zen xtra and now every time it starts up, it statrts in rescue mode and i cant reload the os. I tried reflashing it with the firmware update again and all it says is "player not connected, please connect player." Even on the windows explorer, it shows up but it says i've only got 20MB of space on it even after i formatted it three times. I dont know what else to do, any help would be appreciated even it it means buying a new mp3 player which isnt really what i want to do. thanks.Message Edited by brammes on 05-29-2006 2:00 PM

Can you try entering Rescue Mode on the player? What happens when you try that?
If you can get in there, try the Reload OS option first, and then try loading the firmware again.

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra sound prob

Hi, I've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra for more than 2 years and have had little problems with it. However, now I cannot get any sound out of the left speaker of any type of speaker/earphones I plug into the audiojack. This is not a speaker/earphone problem, they work with any audio equipment. I can get sound out of both left and right speakers/phones if I plug the jack only 80% into the audiojack. But if I plug the jack all the way into the player, only the right speaker/phone works. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

I am experiencing the exact same problem - "Device not connected, even though I can see the device as a virtual dri've on my XP SP2 PC. I have contacted creative tech support and followed their instructions to the letter with no success.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra prob

Well, I just emailed support again but overlooked the (faster?) forums until now. Maybe someone can help me out... ------- EMAIL SENT -------- Hi, I emailed the customer support a while ago and got a generic reply as how to reset my mp3 player's OS. *This is not a software problem, it is a hardware problem... I want to send my Nomad Zen Xtra in to Creative to get it fixed and I will pay for the repairs.* Here is an original copy of the message: Hello, about a year ago I purchased my Creative Nomad Zen Xtra. Only a couple months into using it, I dropped the MP3 player on the headphone jack where my headphones were plugged in and the sound stopped working correctly. I think maybe that the soldering that is keeping the headphone jack on the circuit board is messed up or disconnected. Some sound does come out of one earphone when I wiggle the plug around a bit. How much do you think this would cost me? The player is no longer under its one year warranty, either. Thanks in advance. - Steve ----- Originally answered by Technical Support, Creative Labs Americas ----- Thanks, Steve-oMessage Edited by Jeremy-CL on 0-2-2005 0:08 AM

<EM>I?ve posted it before, but here we go again</EM>:
Two or three months after buying my 40GB zen xtra, the same thing happened to me. I deduced it was a battery problem and prepared myself to expand U$29 on a new one (I li've in Rio and it would be impossible for me to send it back for warranty). While I was looking for the new battery, I kept using it in my job and at home, with the power cord hooked up. I did it some times and one day, without any apearent reason, it started to charge the battery and ever since it never happened again. I friend of mine mentioned that these Li-Ion batteries can have this kind of problem. By that time, he suggested some charging manouveres to recover it but it was no needed. What I suggest you is to keep trying to charge it. You may be as lucky as me!

  • Zen Xtra Library Rebuild Prob

When ever my Zen Xtra is connected to a power source, regardless of whether or not I've turned it on, it goes into the Rebuilding Library screen. I've attempted to put the player into the Rescue mode and it doesn't do so, I hold down Reset and Play for quite some time and nothing happens except that the screen goes blank as soon as I hit Reset. This is greatly irritating. Also, it seems that whenever I upload a significant portion of music onto the player a day or two later it will have serious difficulty of some kind. If anyone has dealt with the same problem or has a solution please help.

You enter rescue mode by keeping play held down then pressing reset just once, continue to keep play held down. If it won't enter rescue mode then the player is faulty and you need to contact Creative Support, links for which are in the FAQ post.

  • Nomad Zen Xtra Connection prob

I recently upgraded from 2000 Pro to XP Pro and have struggled with connectivity since. I cannot view the Zen xtra as a hard disc in the 'my computer' function. It connects fine with Media Organizer, but I can't view it as an external dri've. This worked fine in 2000. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated.

I was unaware that the Zen Xtra could be viewed as a hard dri've on any OS. It certainly cannot be viewed that way on Windows XP.
